During your 1,100 km railway trip, you will be pleased to see the islands in the calm Seto Inland Sea, and the rough seascape of the Pacific Ocean. The railway connects the seaside area with mountain villages, allowing you to commune with nature and the simple lifestyle of Shikoku. Visiting famous historic spots in the prefectural capitals, such as Tokushima, Takamatsu, Matsuyama, and Kochi, and enjoying the city life of the locals is also appealing!

2 3

Page 3: JR Shikoku- All Shikoku Rail Pass

Ehime Prefecture which fronts both the Seto Inland Sea and Uwa Sea has a mild climate and visitors are warmly received by the local with their generous “omotenashi” (hospitality) spirit. Together with Dogo Onsen, Japan’s oldest hot springs, there are many hot springs. Mount Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan, and nostalgic old streets are only some of the highlights in Ehime.

Among the three bridges that connect the main island and Shikoku, Seto-Ohashi Bridge to Kagawa Prefecture is the first-built bridge and is considered as the gateway to Shi-koku. It is the world’s longest two-tiered bridge. From the train windows, views of the Seto Inland Sea can be fully en-joyed. Famous local food Sanuki udon noodles and many art-related events are popular these days.

People of Kochi are noted to be friendly and broad-minded, and the landscape and seascape of the Pacific Ocean are very dynamic and appealing. Yosakoi Festival, which is held every summer, definitely represents the nature of Kochi people. Also, Kochi is known as the “kingdom of comics” for producing many popular manga artists. Manga-related museums are also popu-lar tourist spots.

Awaodori dance festival is one of the most famous Japanese festivals, and it is held every summer. In Awaodori-related museum, tourists are able to en-joy the dance performances all year round, and tourists can also experience this unique dance for themselves. Renowned, mostly-unexplored regions of the Iya Valley and the Naruto Whirlpools are mys-terious sites for tourists.

Sunport Takamatsu

On Ogi Island and Megi Island of the Seto Inland Sea, grand nature, old villages and modern art form a harmony.

For over 20 years, Naoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea has endeavored to harmonize beautiful nature and modern art. Based on this challenge as a core, Setouchi Triennale (con-temporary art festival) is held once every three years, and a large number of tourists come to visit from all over Japan as well as from abroad. After enjoying the art pieces on the is-land, it is also recommended to visit Ehime, where many historic sites remain.

Matsuyama Castle

http://www.matsuyamajo.jp/

Matsuyama Castle was built by Yoshiaki Kato, who was re-nowned for his expertise in constructing castles. The current castle tower was reconstructed in 1854, and is the last com-plete castle built during the Edo period (1603-1867) among all presently existing 12 castle towers in Japan. With 21 build-ings that are designated National Important Cultural Proper-ties, gates, turrets, and fan-shaped stonewall, the castle and grounds will amply reward a visit.

The tour plan of visiting the south part of Shikoku via Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, allows you to enjoy both historic sites and nature. Buildings and streets that were built in the late 19th century will make you feel as if you have slipped back in time to “the good old days.” It is also recommended to go to Kochi Prefecture by the railway that runs along the Shimanto River, which has been called “the last clear stream in Japan.” While heading for Kochi, stop by at the museum displaying pop-culture figures.

Going up the stream of the Yoshino River from Tokushima City, you’ll find streets and dwell-ings that were constructed more than 100 years ago. As you head upstream, you will step into the natural masterpiece of Oboke and Koboke valleys. Going down the river by boat or joining in a rafting tour will allow you to appreciate the gorgeous landscape. In the se-cluded region of the Iya Valley, an old, private home-style hotel, established by Alex Kerr, can be found. It is also a good idea to leave for Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, from here, and stroll through the “town of literature.”

In the area from Kochi City to Muroto, there are a number of landmarks, such as a recre-ation of Monet’s beloved garden in Giverny, and Muroto Geopark, which is designated as a global geopark by the Global Geoparks Network. Why not continue on into Tokushima and enjoy temple touring? Shikoku Henro (pilgrimage) is a religious journey to 88 sacred tem-ples related to Kobo Daishi, a highly revered figure of Japanese Buddhism. The pilgrimage is now becoming popular with foreigners, too. Experience the feeling of pilgrimage by visit-ing some of the temples in Tokushima and Kagawa.
