PARISH NEWS From Our Pastor…

In the Gospel, Jesus is showing just how much we are to be committed to him: to love him more than our father, mother, son

or daughter. That’s a tall order. We can feel like it’s unattainable, so we just pass it off as a pious saying of Jesus. But what IS more important than a relationship with Jesus? Is it our family, career, possessions, our favorite sins? These won’t save our soul. Discipleship takes real work. Just as athletes deny themselves comforts as they energetically train, so we must do the same in our spiritual lives. Blessings!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Faith Like a Child If you Google Search recommendations on how to raise gener-ous children, almost every list of ideas begins with — or at least contains — the directive for adults to be good models of generosi-ty themselves. Our children learn from our actions much more than from our words. Of course, when I think back over the years while my children were growing up, I think I may have learned as much from them as they learned from me. There is a time be-tween early childhood and middle school where a child seems to be freer to give and share than at any other time in life. It is around the age of First Communion when the cries of “mine” turn to laughter and smiles, and the urge to be a part of something big-ger than oneself leads to sharing. Before you know it, the child hits the pre-teen years, and once again, he or she becomes the center of the universe. I believe that the previous paragraph is all true, however, the stages described seem to repeat themselves throughout adulthood. Don’t you agree? Sometimes we fall into seeing ourselves as the center of the universe, or we become consumed by our state in life or with what we have acquired. Also, we at times are gener-ous and loving people. It is sin that draws us back into ourselves and away from any meaningful life of stewardship and generosity. In order to be freed for love, we need role models to help us see what really matters. We need to reflect on the example of many of our brothers and sisters in Christ. And, yes, we need to look to children who may be at the point in their lives where sharing is fun, and love is something in abundance.

OSB, With Nouwen as our inspiration, we will explore to-gether the profound dynamics of our spiritual life as God’s be-loved---chosen and blessed before the foundation of the world while at the same present time representing a life that is broken and given as bread for others. Through a combination of guided teaching, personal reflection and communal interaction, we hope to imbibe in us what it truly means to be, to become, and to live our life as the Beloved amidst our increasingly challenging world. Please note: Wil Hernandez will direct this retreat on Zoom. He will not be here in person, You can attend this retreat at St. Ben-edict Center or from your own home. The Lord Took Me from Following the Flock: The Message of the Prophet Amos, August 1, one-day retreat at Saint Benedict Center, Schuyler, with Father Prior Joel Macul, OSB, S.T.L. The first of the written prophets, Amos was filled with an urgency to speak the unspeakable. We will take time to look at how he gives shape to the word of the Lord he says he must speak, at the words and images he draws upon to shake up Israel. This way the proph-et can lead us to look closely at our own world and find a voice to name where God wants his mercy to work justice. In that lies hope for the future, for the rebuilding of what has fallen down. Social distancing will be observed, please bring your mask. Lunch is available at the Center for $11.02 (includes tax). Regis-ter at www.StBenedictCenter.com or call (402) 352-8819.

I Don’t Remember, August 14 – 16, retreat at Saint Benedict Center, Schuyler, with Father Donald W. Shane. Jesus’ desire is that we let the Father’s profound personal love for us flow into our hearts. The presentations will highlight Jesus’ meetings with Mary Magdalene, Peter, Paul, Matthew, Dismas and others. We will reflect on the real meaning of the Sacraments of Reconcilia-tion and Anointing of the Sick with personal experiences. The theme, “I don’t remember” points to the total forgiveness the Fa-ther offers us through his Son. There is no better model of trust-ing in His love than that of our Blessed Mother. We will reflect on her life and ask her to guide us to open our hearts to receive His personal love. Come prepared to celebrate His personal love and forgiveness and to let go of unhealthy guilt forever. Social distancing will be observed, please bring your mask. Friday, 7:30 p.m. to Sunday after lunch. Register now at www.StBenedictCenter.com or call (402) 352-8819.
