I couldn't believe it when Mrs Hamer told me that I had been chosen to represent Bishop Vaughan School and Wales at the Handover Ceremony of the Olympic Torch in Athens, and to be part of the party that would accompany the flame on the flight back to the United Kingdom. At first I wasn't allowed to tell anybody which was really difficult and I didn't really know what we were going to be doing in Greece. However as the time got nearer and we were sent a full itinerary I started to realise that I was about to experience the trip of a lifetime. On Tuesday 15

th May Mr Jones my PE teacher

travelled with me by train to London. We spent the first night in a hotel close to Heathrow Airport. It was really exciting when we met the other four young people who had been chosen to represent Northern Ireland, Scotland and England and the members of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).

On Wednesday morning the excitement really began. We realised that we were going to be flying on a special flight, BA 2012. The plane was called the 'firefly' because it had been specially painted in gold, yellow and white for the special journey to collect the Olympic Flame. On the plane we realised that we were going to be flying to Greece with Princess Anne, Sebastian Coe, Boris Johnson the Mayor of London, Hugh Robertson, the Minister for Sport along with other guests and lots of people from the media. When we arrived in Athens we attended a briefing at the British Council followed by our first rehearsal for the 'Handover Ceremony' which was to take place at the site of the first modern Olympics, the Panathenaic Stadium. On Thursday, 17 May we had the opportunity to visit two Greek schools. I really enjoyed this because it gave me the chance to meet pupils of my own age from schools in another country. Everywhere we went we were followed by the media. There were television and radio crews from different countries including people from the BBC and ITV. The first interviews were really nerve wracking but after a while we all got the hang of it and started to enjoy being interviewed by television and radio presenters from different countries. In the afternoon we received a telephone call telling us that a VIP had invited us to visit him at his hotel. You can imagine our excitement and amazement when we found out that it was David Beckham! He was really nice. He spoke to us at length, signed autographs and had his picture taken with each of us. He told us that he would be joining us at the Ceremony.

Bishop Vaughan at Historic Olympic Ceremony

What a day! I thought it couldn't get any better but there was still more to come. In the evening it was time for the actual Handover Ceremony itself. Although the weather wasn't good and there was heavy rain it turned out to be a very special occasion. I felt very proud to be part of the Ceremony where the Olympic Flame was being presented to Princess Anne. During the Ceremony we were presented with Olive Branches. This was a symbol of peace and friendship between people of different countries and represented the Olympic values. Following the Ceremony we marched from the stadium through the crowded streets. There were crowds cheering and shouting. Later in the evening we attended a function at the British Embassy. The next morning we visited another Greek School. I was really excited as I had been told that I was going to referee a football match and that David Beckham was going to be playing on one of the teams! Unfortunately it was raining and so we had to go into the school and take part in some activities in the classrooms. Again the Greek children made us feel very welcome and presented us with gifts. We then travelled to the airport with Sebastian Coe who invited us into the VIP lounge to wait for the plane. The flame was put into special miners lamps and was given pride of place in the first row of seats. When we arrived at RAF Culdrose in Cornwall we couldn't believe the size of the crowd that was waiting to welcome the flame to the UK. The five of us were the first to leave the plane followed by Princess Anne, Sebastian Coe, David Beckham and the other dignitaries. We were joined by Nick Clegg the Deputy Prime Minister. It was amazing to see the flame finally arriving in the United Kingdom and being lit ready for the start of the torch relay around the country which was due to begin the next day. Special security guards had to sleep with the flame in order to guard it over night. I felt very proud to have been chosen to be part of such a very special occasion. I am very grateful to Mr Jones my PE teacher at Bishop Vaughan School for accompanying me on the trip and to the LOCOG Officials who made us feel so welcome and gave us such a fantastic time and memories we will cherish forever.

Our book is finally complete! This is a collection of exciting and creative writing from the pupils of Bishop Vaughan. Well done to those who have contributed to our book this year. Also, a big thank you to Mr Thomas who created the image for our front cover. Please see Miss Neucker in Room 13 if you wish to purchase a copy.

A selection of pupils from Years 7 – 10 took part in the ‘Young

Writers Express Yourself Through Poetry’ competition and were

delighted to have their poems published in a book. They were

able to let their imaginations run wild as they wrote about a

whole range of topics, experimented with language and enjoyed

the challenge of expressing themselves through poetry.

The Triathlon day held at Penlan Leisure Centre was run and organised by the 5 x 60 officers in conjunction with Triathlon Wales. It was a highly successful day with over 30 pupils from Bishop Vaughan taking part from years 7 and 8, which consisted of a swim, a cycle and a run. The whole day was organised very well and ran smoothly with all the pupils successfully completing the event and receiving a medal, swim hat, t-shirt and goodie bag at the end of the race. After participating in the Triathlon the pupils had the opportunity to be involved in some of the other activities which had been laid out for them. These consisted of an inflatable rugby challenge, a hockey challenge, a basketball challenge and also a football challenge. All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day.

BMC Youth Climbing Championship 2012BMC Youth Climbing Championship 2012BMC Youth Climbing Championship 2012BMC Youth Climbing Championship 2012 On Friday 22nd June I travelled to Edinburgh as part of the Welsh Climbing Team to take part in the finals of the BMC Youth Climbing Championship. The event was held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena which has the highest indoor wall in the UK. On Saturday morning I was very nervous and my hands were shaking but when we arrived at the centre I started to get excited about the competition. There were crowds of people there. The competition is split into different age groups so I had some time to wait before it was my turn. I came 9th out of 39 others in my age group and felt that I could have done better but there’s always next year and it’s still an achievement when I think that it’s 9th in Britain. The Welsh Team came 7th which is also something to be proud of. We had a great day and I had the opportunity to try out some of the other challenging climbing walls that they have at the Edinburgh Arena before we came home. Richard Marotta 10.7

The team we were up against, Fulham under 14’s, had won the Premier League Cup for their age group and were preparing to play in a tournament in Barcelona. We braced to play a very tough game but were optimistic about our great experience! The final score was 5 - 3 to Fulham, but it was a close game and at one point we were in the lead. I am grateful for my experience and I hope to look forward to another opportunity like this. James McCarthy 10.5

On 19th June I went on a retreat to Our Lady of Assumption Church in Briton Ferry.

We played many games. The first game we played was called clumps. We would

have to run clockwise around the room and when the teacher called out a number,

we would have to get into groups containing that number of people. The purpose of

this game was to see what it felt like to be left out.

Next, we played a game called over and under, helping us to improve our team work

skills. Our team won.

We had a 20 minute break, and at 12.40 we had lunch in McDonalds. Everyone

was sitting in the car park, the boys playing football and the girls gossiping.

We meditated in the church at the end of the day, and it was very relaxing. We

listened to music while Ms. Smith led us in a guided meditation. We met Jesus and

he was our best friend. I learnt we can find time to relax and ignore our

surroundings. The purpose of the day was to bond with our class, and get to know

ourselves and our class friends better.

My favourite part of the day was the affirmations when all of the class wrote

comments about us on sheets of paper and we did the same for them. We saw

what other people really thought about us and we were also given the opportunity to

write about other people.

Afterwards, we went on the bus which took us back to tutorial in school.

Olivia Collins 8.3

In the church hall we had to stand up and say our names and say something that

nearly no one knew about, about yourself. I said that I like to play netball and

hockey. I went with my class 8.3 and two people from 8.5. The purpose of the day

was to learn more about yourself and about others. We did meditation on the altar

in the church, the church was called Our Lady of Assumption. From the meditation I

learnt that Jesus loves me and he tries to show me in the flowers and trees and in

everything. I learned that he died for me because he loves me.

Chanelle Wainwright 8.3

We went to Briton Ferry to a church for a retreat day. We played a couple of games

about peer pressure and team building. We had conversations about things like

peer pressure and about gossip and the damage it causes. At the end we all went

into the church for a guided meditation with Mrs Perwick. All together is was a really

good day.

The night of the prom was a massively anticipated event by both pupils and staff. The night went off without a hitch, being extremely enjoyable and was a fantastic opportunity to display the entire year group as one family. Many agreed that the food and entertainment were fantastic. The band “The Riff” played and was described as the perfect choice for the Year 11 Prom. I think we can all agree that the whole night was both amazing and extremely enjoyable for all those who went. The combination of a great choice of dresses and suits and a great atmosphere surrounding the whole event certainly made this a night to remember. Along with the fun games provided at each table, such as “Guess the Teacher” and “Guess the Lyrics”, we all definitely had a great time, even when sitting down and waiting for each course! The chocolate fountain was one of the highlights of the evening; Miss Wilshire kindly performed a safety check on the chocolate. Thanks Miss! The Year 11 Prom of 2012 will definitely go down in history as one of the greatest! Corey Edwards 11.5 I was very proud of all the 11’s at the Prom, they were all dressed to impress and behaved in the exemplary manor I have come to expect. It was an incredible culmination of their first five years at Bishop Vaughan. They have been a fantastic year group and I will miss being their Senior Tutor. of 7.5 worked very hard to plant 120 trees in 2 hours. Their attitude and behaviour was excellent, with several members of the public and the FoPL committee making very pleasing comments. The Eco group have continued to plant a further 40 trees on school grounds, including a Royal Oak from the Woodland Trust to mark the Diamond Jubilee. excellent opportunity to raise awareness across the school. Wales was the world’s first Fairtrade nation and our pupils should be proud of this. Tutorial competitions, a Fairtrade play and lots of information via tutorials and assemblies meant that awareness was raised and pupils had fun learning about the issues involved. To support the theme ‘Take a Step for Fair Trade’ approximately 900 pupils took part in a continual relay for 2 hours and signed a tutorial poster in support of Fair Trade.

Music Department

The Music Department continues to be diligent in raising standards of Learning & Teaching both within the classroom and through it’s ‘Enrichment Programme’ of extra-curricular activities and Music Workshops to ensure pupils gain a broad and balanced curriculum meeting their individual needs. These are some of our highlghts this term. The ‘Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’ choir at KS4 & 5 recorded the Ospreys Rugby Theme tune in March which gained outstanding praise from the ‘Ospreys Education Co-ordinator’ Mr Keith Collins. The recording was used with the newly acquired Apple iPad which gave a professional and dynamic musical feel. Pupils from Years 9 & 10 also accompanied the choir on Drum Kit (Tommy Evans – Yr 10), Acoustic Guitars (Jack Beynon & Connor Burns – Yr 10), Bass Guitar (Christian Betts – Yr 10) and Lead Electric Guitar (Nathan Corbett – Yr 9) The recording was so successful that ‘Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’ were invited to attend the Liberty Stadium for photographic opportunities and an interview. The Theme tune has since been played on many occasions both before and during the Rugby Matches. In recognition for their outstanding service ‘Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’ were asked to sing in the Stadium for a video call and also received free tickets for their venture. The Choir and Instrumentalists were accompanied by Mrs N Jackson and Ms Kirsty Smith on Friday 30th March. Sean White (Yr 13), Manager of the ‘Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’Only Lads Aloud’ was also responsible for organising extra rehearsals with the boys when staff were teaching. To Sean, we say thank you and he will now pass on his managerial role to another suitable candidate for next year.

The Department have seen an outstanding improvement in Composition Skills since the Governors and Mr. Blackburn kindly ratified the purchase of 8 Apple iMacs, 2 Mac Book Airs, 2 iPads and a Mac Book Pro. Levels of attainment in KS3 & 4 have risen dramatically and pupils will have the opportunity of having a Class Music Album on CD at the end of the Summer Term so that they are able to share their work with parents and keep copies of their Compositions. It has been decided that as these are Albums which will have approximately 10 tracks per CD/class that we will publish these Albums for the pupils under the name of ‘Bright Star ‘Bright Star ‘Bright Star ‘Bright Star Records@BVS’. The staff and pupils of Bishop Vaughan Music Department would like to give special thanks to Mr. Blackburn and the Governors for making these purchases as it has had a resounding effect on pupil motivation, standards of Learning and development of skills. On 21st June the Year 12 Geography class participated in a field trip to “Waterfall Country” in the Upper Vale of Neath. The students were awestruck by the landforms which included the spectacular Porth yr Ogof swallow hole and the numerous waterfalls such as Sgwd yr Eira, the Clungwyn Falls and the Fuller’s Falls. There was ample water in the rivers after such a wet month for collecting data on river velocity, discharge, channel cross-section and bedload.

On the 27th and the 29th June 48 students took part in an investigation of the changing characteristics of the River Ilston (Gower) between it’s source on Fairwood Common and its mouth at Three Cliff’s Bay.

We were very fortunate with the weather and managed to avoid getting drenched by downpours, if not by slipping into the river!

Everest On 24th March fourteen students from Bishop Vaughan Sixth Form departed Swansea on their way to Everest Base Camp. All students had been training and fundraising over the past year in preparation for the expedition. The group arrived safely in Kathmandu international airport and were in good spirits, however the difference in this third world city compared to back home did come as a culture shock to many of the group. We unfortunately only had one night in Kathmandu before departing for the Khumbu valley and the start of the fourteen day trek. The flights to Lukla (the main airport in the Khumbu) did prove to be a problem, but after an anxious start the whole group finally arrived at our first lodge. The next few days trekking provided spectacular views, great comradeship and plenty of laughs, with a certain few BVS students regularly getting nominated for the Nepal numpty t-shirt. People had good and bad days but due to the team spirit of the group everybody got through them. After twelve days of trekking the group reached their destination, Everest base camp. Not every member of the group made it due to illness, but each individual can be proud of their achievements and efforts on the trip. After twelve days of trekking upwards, it was now time for the three day trip back to the start line. This time enabled people to really take in the sights and begin to appreciate what they had just accomplished. After coming back from the mountains everyone had the chance to relax and experience the sights and smells of Kathmandu, with Durbar Square and the Monkey Temple being the highlights of the city tour. The group also revisited Balmindir Orphanage which has become a regular part of past expeditions. The group between them raised over £8000 and took over a 100kg of clothes for the children. The money goes towards buying every child in all the organisations orphanages a school uniform, bag, shoes, stationery and books. Without these they would not be able to go to school. There was also a football match between ex orphans and the group, despite a valiant effort we unfortunately lost 2-1, however they did have two Nepal internationals playing so we could hold our heads high. The trip was a huge success, and pupils from BVS will surely have memories and experiences that will last a lifetime and hopefully encourage them to do something similar in the future. A big thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who donated clothes and money for the orphanage it makes a huge difference. ‘’The trip was brilliant. It may

have taken a lot of effort and was

very demanding, but it was well

worth it. The views were

spectacular and the people were

lovely, seeing the orphans and

the poor living conditions made

me appreciate what I have. Not

many people can say they’ve

walked up Everest, but I’m proud

to say I have.’’

Could both parents and pupils be aware that the children

should carry their bus pass with them at all times. Pupils could be asked at any time whilst travelling on a school bus, to produce their bus pass as evidence that they are allocated a seat. If pupils have misplaced their bus pass please contact the school office who will organise a replacement. Also pupils are not allowed to travel on any other bus other than the one that is printed on their bus pass. On several occasions lately pupils have tried to travel on different buses, e.g. to go over to a friend’s place after school. This is not allowed and the drivers have the right to refuse entry to pupils who are not allocated to their bus. It is parents’ responsibility to collect their children and take them to alternative venues after school.

Parking Outside Bishop Vaughan

A letter has been received from the School Community Police Officer asking us to pass on the concerns of local residents in relation to parking and vehicles causing obstructions outside the school from 3 o’clock every afternoon. Police Officers will be patrolling regularly outside the school to take positive action regarding any vehicles which are parked in contravention of road traffic legislation.

Mobile Telephones If pupils have mobile phones they should note that they are notnotnotnot to be switched on or in use inside the school. This includes the buildings, playground and playing field areas, before, during and after the school day. Mobile phones are to be kept out of sight, either on the person or in the school bag. The school can take no responsibility for any loss or theft of mobile phones. Parents and guardians are asked notnotnotnot to contact their children by phone or text during the school day. If an emergency message needs to be conveyed the school office will take the call and pass the message on. Similarly if a pupil needs to make an emergency call home he or she just needs to approach the office. Failure to comply with these rules will result in the phone being confiscated and kept in the school office for collection by a responsible adult.
