Quality Food and ServiceWritten by Jack W Kim / Photos submitted by Outback

Finding a restaurant that provides quality food and service at a reasonable cost is not as easy as one would think. Going out to eat western style foods in a foreign country can be more expensive than one first imagined. I’m here to tell you that there is a restau-rant where you can have “all of the above.” Outback Steakhouse is franchise restaurant in Korea and we all know that the quality of food and service differs from restaurant to restaurant. The Outback Steakhouse on road#77 is “all of the above.”

The menu price will never change no matter which Outback you decide to go to, but the quality of food and service will always be the difference. Right now, Outback is having an event called Outback Aussie Night that starts at 9PM. First, 15% discount on 15 menu items: salads, pastas, steaks and appetizer dishes. Second, 20% off on wine and beer sets. This is where you get wine/beer with an appetizer. Third, 1 hour and 40 minutes of all you can drink beer for only 6,500won (less than $6.00 per person). Yes, that is correct. All you pay is 6,500won for ALL YOU CAN DRINK beer for 1hr and 40min. Now that I told you about the deals going on at Outback right now, let me tell you about the quality of food & service of the Outback on road#77.

This particular Outback is successful because the owner is very passionate about his work. The owner is at the restaurant everyday making sure the kitchen is running smoothly and his staff are taking care of the customers. His attention to detail and high stan-dard of quality of food and service is what makes this Outback “all of the above.” You can see and feel the difference of the quality of food and service from the moment you step into the restaurant until the time

you step out. The wait staff are attentive to ensure the customers are cared for and every dish is cooked to perfection. The owner is always in the kitchen making sure that the preparation of the food meets his high standards of quality. On top of all of this, the owner is very friendly to the US Forces in Korea. If you are a US Service member and show your ID card you receive a 10% discount. What more can you ask for in a restaurant?

By bus :100-1, 402, 427, 814 and Suseong 1-1 Get off at 대구고용노동청(Daegu Regional Employment and Labor Office) and walk back about 50m, then there’ll be Hwangeum branch of Outback Steak House.

Directions

By Subway :Come out of Exit 2 of Beomeo Station on Line 2(green line) and walk 150m.There’s a bus stop and take 100-1, 814 and Suseong 1-1. For the rest part, please refer to above.Or you can take a cab. It would cost less than 3,000won. (Outback Hwanggeumjeom ga juseyo)”

Fine Dining Done Right

La Luce was first reviewed in the Daegu Compass about a year ago, when it was a newcomer to the Daegu restaurant game. As great as it was then, time has allowed this awesome restaurant to ma-ture like a fine, reasonably priced wine. Owner and chef Kim Sun Il has honed both his skills and his menu. All the things that made the place great to begin with are still very much in tact, but like any true professional, Mr. Kim was not content to rest on his laurels, and decided his business’ first birthday was as good a time as any to spice up his menu with some exciting new entries.

Contemporary European Cuisine

Page 11: June 2013 Daegu Compass

11

In case you missed the Compass’ first article about La Luce, here’s a quick recap on what to expect. The spacious dining area is wide open in the center, while the perimeter has a bunch of odd jutting angles which house tables of varying sizes, including a large banquette in the rear corner. It’s a perfect place for an intimate date, but it can easily seat large parties too. The décor is clean and sparse but doesn’t come across as too sterile. On the menu you’ll find a broad selection of “contemporary European cuisine”, including dishes with roots in Italy, Spain and Greece. Two of Chef Kim’s new selections worth checking out are the ridiculously tasty linguini with white truffle oil and crab, and the braised, yogurt marinated lamb shoulder which appar-ently took quite some time to perfect.

-continued on p12-

Mr. Kim learned to cook in Itaewon, one of, if not the most diverse areas in South Korea. Training there gave him a lot of valuable exposure to the foreign-er palette, and he learned not to fall into the trap-pings that plague European food in Korea, namely blandness and a lack of some of the most rudi-mentary concepts of how ingredients and textures are supposed to work. The dissatisfaction you’ve probably experienced time and again with “Italian” restaurants in Daegu after eating a swampy bowlful of spaghetti carbonara or choking down a soggy, overloaded pizza isn’t a symptom of homesickness or elitism; you’re right on. The problem stems from many chefs’ incorrect assumption that more is bet-ter; more cheese, more garlic, more heavy cream, more bacon. But, sometimes, more and more and more just adds up to a greasy nothing; each indi-vidual flavor cancelling out the next one out until all that’s left is the dregs that haven’t simmered away into the ether. This is definitely not the case at La Luce. Mr. Kim’s dishes boast the boldest flavors in town thanks to his high degree of skill when it comes to preparation and his demanding standards

when it comes to food quality. He imports innumer-able hard to find items and from all over the world at no added cost to the customer.

Eating Out _ Contemporary European Cuisine

Page 13: June 2013 Daegu Compass

13

Speaking of cost, La Luce’s prices are quite rea-sonable. The majority of entrees are under 20,000 Won. Salads which can accommodate two people cost between 10,000 and 17,000. Bottles from the impressive wine list range from as low as 15,000 to nearly 200,000. A constant rotation of thoughtfully chosen house reds and whites are available by the glass. If you’ve got a special occasion coming up,

look into reserving a party here. The staff can help you put together a custom prix fixe menu to fit any price range (this can be done on the phone, in En-glish).The easiest way to get to La Luce is by subway. Take the green line to the Kyungpook University Hospital stop (one stop from Banwoldang) then walk two blocks north. It is located on the second floor of the Bun Hong Bitseu Ro Building, directly across from the hospital. If you prefer to take a taxi, tell the driver “Kyungpook dae-hok byeoung-won.”If you thought you were doomed to a life without au-thentic European flavor in Daegu, Chef Kim is here to save the day you. Fine dining and casual prices await you at La Luce.

Five Foods for the Brave

Experience the Unexpected

What a pity it’d be, travelling so far just to eat hamburgers or hotdogs or the same boring food of home, only lower quality. I say leave the pizza and pasta for when in Rome. Here in Dae-gu, we are lucky to be surrounded by such amazing Korean cuisine: healthy sides, cheap drinks, fun and delicious table-BBQ. Unfortunately, some of us may still have a fear of the unknown. So let’s get to know some of Daegu’s most perilous platters with ‘Five Foods for the Brave,’ a countdown to conquering that fear and becoming a true traveler.

5) Pig Rectum - 막창 (mak chang)

막창 is the end of a pig’s digestive sys-tem. It’s also the beginning, if the nas-

ty thing eats its own poo. Regardless, 막창 would’ve made a higher spot on the list if it weren’t so common here. In fact, 막창 is Daegu’s claim to cu-linary fame. As a grilled dish it originated here, gave rise to hundreds of restaurants, and and won 2nd place for Daegu’s most famous foods in a Running Man challenge. Another reason it only made the bot-tom spot on ‘Foods for the Brave’ is because, in my opinion, it’s so damn delicious. Originally turned off by thoughts of chewy pig ass, it has since become my favorite meat. Just be sure to cut it thin, roast it crispy, and dip it in bean sauce.Recommended Locations: 반야월 막창 (Banyawol Makchang) is a notable restaurant chain, with one downtown around the corner from Samduk Fire Station. Also, 시지광장 (Siji Square) is an area well-known for quality 막창 restaurants.

4) Chicken Feet - 닭발 (dalk bal)

닭발 is the lowliest body part of the lowliest animal on the menu. Try not to think of all the feces and dead comrades the feet stepped on while members of a living chicken. Just put on some plastic gloves, grab a leg, bite off a toe, suck off the skin and tendons and spit out the bones. After one or two, the ultra-spicy sauce may set your mouth ablaze. So take a break and order some 쿨피스, or yogurt juice, to douse the flames. I found myself numb to the pain after several rounds. If you can’t handle the boney melee, try 닭발 of the bite-sized variety. You can usually order them 무뼈 or 뼈없는 (boneless). Also, this smaller type is grilled rather than stewed, allowing you to counteract their toenail and car-tilage textures by cooking them extra crispy.

Recommended Locations (down-town): For the large, legged style, try 한신포차 next to Thursday Party 1. For the smaller, boneless style, visit 온달포차, the red-tented shack past Caliente.

3) Raw Cow Organs - 천엽 and 생간 (cheon yub and saeng gan)

Raw beef restaurants may offer you a new experience and a delicious plate of fresh meat. But the honor of the #3 ‘Foods for the Brave’ goes to a side-dish duo that’s served at such places. First is 천엽, meaning raw stomach, specifically the 3rd of a cow’s 4 stom-achs. It has the appearance of a grey

bath towel and the texture of an old rubber band. 천엽’s redeeming quali-ty is how it tastes: like nothing, or the 기름장 (sesame oil with salt) you dip it in. Second is 생간, meaning raw (“fresh”) liver. These blobs of blood dissolve in your mouth like moist tofu. But before you encounter these ‘Foods for the Brave’ you’ll need to order a main course. Raw beef restaurants usually offer two styles: 생고기, fresh meat slaughtered and served the same day; and 육회, meat frozen for a day, marinated, and served with an egg yolk and pear slices. Just be sure to visit a reputable restaurant that abides by Korea’s strict beef-control regula-tions and doesn’t serve deadly bac-teria. I’d also consider popping some anti-parasitic pills afterward.Recommended Locations: For down-town, try 덕일구이 off Cell Phone Street. To find one near you, Naver search (Daegu raw beef ‘good restaurant’) and expand the resulting map. Check if they post cre-

dentials on their wall and state the 소 들어오는 날 (beef delivery date).

2) Live Octopus -

“Live” is a loose term here considering it’s completely dismembered and its head discarded. However, octopi have complex nervous systems with arms programmed to act independently of the brain. That explains all the chaos

slithering around on your plate! Some pieces attempt to escape and reunite with the Mothership, others cling for what’s left of their dear life, suction-ing to the plate, your chopsticks, or the inside of your mouth. There have been cases of vengeful octopi choking consumers. Don’t let these intelligent creatures outsmart you, dip them in sesame oil to nullify their suction power. They may not offer much in terms of flavor, but if eaten soon after slaughter they allegedly provide health benefits. These include stamina for humans and resurrection for dying cattle, according to our chef. Further-more, I found the required chewing to be an effective jaw workout. Recommended Location: After dark, seafood tents line both sides of the main road along 칠성시장 (Chilseong Market).

1) Dog Meat - 개고기

Firstly, I must acknowledge that eating dog is controversial in South Korea. Seeing dogs as friends rather than food, younger generations tend to oppose this ancient tradition. I agree that it’s totally wrong to eat a dog, just like it was totally wrong to eat the four other animals killed in the making of this article. But my purpose here is to share information as it stands, not pro-mote it, but not deny it either. So relax, learn and please don’t go barking up the wrong tree.If you’ve ever ventured into the depths of Chilseong Market, you may have seen angry dog carcasses sprawled across tables. Here lies the source of the two main critiques: health risks to the consumer and inhumane treatment of the livestock. First, market dog meat may spoil after hours of unrefrig-erated, open-air exposure. Second, opponents warn of its dubious ori-gins, such as revenue-seeking animal shelters rather than farms, or it being slaughtered by hanging and beating rather than electric shock. So here’s a disclaimer for trying dog meat in such an uncertain and unregulated setting. To hopefully minimize these concerns, a large, fancy restaurant in Bukgu was the chosen destination of me and a friend (the only brave friend out of the half-dozen I invited). We ordered the 보신탕, or “body nourishing soup,” which allegedly balances the body’s Chi with its abundant nutrition. There seemed to be quite a bit of Chi-balanc-ing going on among the few elderly couples present, except for a fellow scarfing down skin slices and gnaw-ing on leg bones. I was nervous as the lady wheeled up our soups. At first glance, it appeared similar to 해장국 with its red broth and veggies. But the meat, from the dog’s legs according

I’ve heard dog meat smells awful, but all I could smell was the mound of chopped garlic, black pepper, and spicy oils. This made a distinct flavor difficult to identify. I eventually freaked myself out with thoughts of something evil concealed behind the overload of spices and wasn’t able to eat much. But it’s cer-tainly edible (my friend nearly finished his). Just like the other ‘Five Foods for the Brave,’ it must be an acquired taste. But unlike the others, I don’t plan on giving myself another chance to acquire it.

Browsing Seomun Market

Daegu’s Must See Attraction

Seomun Market is a must see attraction for Daegu visitors. Whether you want to shop, eat, or just take in the sights and sounds of a tra-

ditional Korean market, Seomun is sure to impress. Not to be confused with some manufactured tourist trap, Seomun Market has been a pillar of Daegu for more than 300 years and was a boon to its economy during the dramatic development which transformed this once small town into a major city. Today, natives and out-of-towners alike flock to the bustling “Dis-tricts” and alleys that run between them to find deals

on clothes, bedding, fabric, tableware, souvenirs, electronics, food and more.

To single out any one shop or vendor in the complex would be to miss out on the very essence of Seomun Market, where businesses are packed together like so many layers of dried seaweed, and the ensuing competition leads to quality control for the products, and big savings for the buyer. That being said, there are still certain places that a first time visitor ought to check out…

1.Dongsan Clothing Wholesale Market- Don’t be fooled by the name, calling this place a clothing store is like calling Costco a stationary shop. Take a stroll through the winding paths that comprise the four floors of this facility and you’ll find house-ware, luggage, arts and crafts, ceramics, etc. If--for whatever reason--you can only go to one place at Seomun Market, Dongsan will be able to fulfill most of your shopping needs. As if that weren’t convenient enough, it’s located right next to the main gate.

2.Dried fish- Believe it or not, there is an entire district dedicated to dried fish. Even if you aren’t interested in buy-ing any dehydrated anchovy, squid or stingray, you should walk through to at least ob-serve (and smell) these old-school purveyors. Stick to the road you enter the gate through and you’ll find this facility a few hundred meters down on your left.

3.Food- The food available at Seomun Market is rea-son enough to visit. You can’t take more than a few steps without encountering some delicious, authentic dishes. However, the alleys between Districts 1 & 4, and along the north side of Dongsan Market boast the most mouth-watering Korean staples including, but not exclusive to: •Kalguksu- The 1&4 alley is packed with stations serving up this incredible noodle dish. Grab the first seat you can find. Your bowl is guaranteed to be fresh as small batches of noodles are constantly being made from scratch and served up the moment they’re ready.

•Odeng (fish cake) and Mandu (dumpling)- If you’re in the mood for something spicy, drop by one of these stations. You’ll know them by the vats bubbling with bright red sauce and the skillets constantly frying up flat, leaf-like dumplings.•Hoddeok- When doughnut meets pancake, you get one of these sweet disks. Follow the smell of cinna-mon to any one of these vendors sprinkled among both food alleys. Again, the best way to experience Seomun Market is to simply wander through it. Ducking in and out of the multiple entrances to each district and ambling down the alleys is half the fun, and you’re bound to find

Happy Time Go FastInterview and Book Excerpt

1. Tell us why this book is different from other books about teaching in Korea?

Happy Time Go Fast illustrates the ESL experience from in-side the classroom. The book relays my experience as a first-time teacher through a series of stories and anecdotes. Today, books about teaching in Korea are predominantly in-formational, dealing with the job search, contracts, salary, and a little bit about Korean culture. I wanted readers to understand the experience, and although everyone’s expe-rience is different, I think most novice teachers could relate to these stories.

Happy Time Go Fast’s author Wes Weston sits down with the Compass and gives us a peek into his first book. Stay tuned for next issue, Mr. Weston will also

talk about how to self-publish your own novels. Search Amazon.com: Happy Time Go Fast to get your electronic copy today!

-continued on p24-

2. What inspired you to write this book?

Over the years, I’ve taught in several dif-ferent countries in numerous teaching capacities. Like many people abroad, I’ve documented my experiences through a collection of journals and blogs. After living and working in a few different coun-tries, I felt like I had some stories to tell. Thus, Happy Time Go Fast is the first of several books capturing my teaching mis-adventures abroad.

Page 24: June 2013 Daegu Compass

24 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.com

3. How hard was it to get it published? Can you share the process with us in a nutshell?

Getting published was both easy and difficult. It was easy because I decided to self-publish, which anyone can do. Nowadays, the walls of traditional publishing are coming down. If you have a story to tell, then you can turn it into a book. The difficult part is that you have to complete, or at least take part in, just about every aspect of the self-publishing pro-cess. Between writing, editing, formatting, and cover design, from start to finish this was a long project. But I learned a great deal, so hopefully this next time around it’ll be little easier.

4. What was the best thing about writing this book?

Even though I already had lot in writing, I didn’t get serious about putting this book together until last year. By then it had been a few years since I left South Korea, so writing this book brought back a lot of great memories. And since this was my first time teaching, it made me realize how much I’ve changed over the years as an ESL instructor. These days, I’m a much better teacher than the guy in the book.

5. What do you hope people get out of reading this book?

Primarily, I hope to reach people who are considering making a jump into the ESL profession. I think most of us share the same concerns, worries, and appre-hensions before stepping foot into the classroom. I tried to be candid about my experience, and I made some really stupid mistakes. If anything, my stories may give potential teachers an idea of what NOT to do.

6. What does the future hold for you? Do you plan on writing more novels about your time in Asia or following a different path?

Right now, I’m finishing up the next book which is about my teaching experience in rural Namib-ia. It’s called Watermelon is Life, and should be out sometime this summer. After that, I plan to publish another book about living and teach-ing at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Presently, I’m back in the U.S. teaching adults at a language institute while pursuing a Master’s in TESOL.

Chapter 3: Gawi – Bawi – Bo

In late November, just two months after I arrived, a little boy named Dragon told me, “Teacha, she steal pencil.” “No! Lie!” The girl, named Flower, eloquently articulated. There was only one way to solve this. “Rock-Pa-per-Scissors,” I suggested. I utilized the game at every opportunity as a way of settling dis-agreements. It couldn’t have been more perfect. There was little time wasted since it didn’t take long to play, the kids were more than willing to enter into this arrangement, and the results were conclusive. Best of all, I wasn’t directly involved in the final decision-making process. The game allowed the kids to solve the issue themselves. There’d be no formal investigation as to the pencil’s legitimate owner. All proprietary rights were forfeited in order for these kids to prove their worth at Rock-Paper-Scissors. The kids immediately engaged in battle. “Ga-wi-bawi-bo!”“English!” I told them.

“Okay, Teacha! Scissor-Rock-Paper! Scis-sor-Rock-Paper!” Flower threw up her arms in victory as Dragon let out a sigh of defeat and bit-terly stared at his hands like they had let him down. Flower had won the pencil and Dragon begrudgingly accepted the outcome. That was the end of it. We started the lesson which on that day was Story Presentation. This consisted of a short story with key vocabulary that the students had to read and then present. Together, we read the story and after-wards, I wrote it on the board. Then I underlined the key vocabulary, and we pronounced these words individually. After, the kids would memorize the sto-ry and repeat it using one set of vocabulary words. Then they’d say the story again using another set. Koreans are fanatics when it comes to memorizing, and it was amazing what the kids could recite af-ter looking at something for a matter of minutes. I wasn’t going to make them say the story six times using all the vocabulary words since there wasn’t enough time. Normally, I’d want them to choose

maybe three or four. This is where Rock-Pa-per-Scissors would come into play, and we’d enter into negotiations. And when negotiating, it’s always best to overstate your position.“Okay, I will give you five minutes to memorize the story,” I told the class. “I want you to, hmm…choose six!” As I wrote the number six on the board, the kids united in protest.“No! One!” they shouted. “Teacha one!” I knew this was just the initial offer and, after sizing them up, I erased the six and wrote five.

Page 26: June 2013 Daegu Compass

26 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.com

“One! Teacha, one!” they insisted. I’m not sure if they knew how negotiations worked. This is when they were supposed to up their offer. Or perhaps they did know and were just better at negotiating than I was. I erased the five and put a four.“Okay...two! Two! We two!” Now we were getting some-where. “No…you four,” I replied. One thing I occasionally strug-gled with in class was preventing my own speech from reverting to the kids’ erroneous form of English. “You four!” I repeated.

The kids shook their heads. We were at a stalemate, which meant there was only one thing to do. “Okay, we’ll play,” I paused for a moment of suspense. “Rock-Paper-Scissors!” I shouted and they all clapped their hands. “It will be me…versus you.” I spoke slowly and deliberately – another characteristic I was picking up – so that the kids could understand. “I will play…each student…one time…to de-cide…how many times…you will say…the Story Presentation.” A few of the kids straight-ened up in their desks. Others nodded to their friends to let each other know, “IT’S ON!” Of all the things to announce, Rock-Paper-Scissors is what made the kids become more serious in class.

There were nine students in the class, so all I had to do was beat five of them. I started with Frog who was sitting to my left. After doing some quick hand calisthenics, he was ready. We counted, and on three, released. My rock crushed his scissors. I moved on down the line to Tom. One, two, three – my paper covered his rock. Then came Violet, whose paper was viciously cut by my scissors. I really don’t believe there’s a skill to Rock-Paper-Scissors, but I must confess that sometimes you get going and then suddenly…you’re in The Zone. I easily defeated Flower and Sophia, which made me the clear, best of nine, winner. However, I didn’t stop there. I carried on, and at this point the kids just wanted someone to break my winning streak. But I couldn’t be beat. It’s like I was inside their little heads. I beat Shark. I beat Tony. I beat Dragon. Finally, it came down to me and the class’ last hope – Rambo. Suddenly, General Troutman’s words started pouring out of me. “This mission is over, Rambo. Do you understand me? This mission is over!” The

little boy hardly understood English, let alone this ref-erence to First Blood. Rambo glared at me defiantly. He took a deep breath and raised his fist. His paper never stood a chance. After mopping the floor with them, I pumped my fists in the air and did a celebratory dance. The most ridic-ulous part of this spectacle was that I was genuinely excited. The kids were shocked by the devastating loss, yet amused by my flamboyant celebration.

Special Reports _ SPOTLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Photos by Fergus Scott

SPOTLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

How did you get started in photography?

I got started in photography when I came to Korea in December 2010. I never had an interest in photog-raphy before Korea but when I got here I wanted to document my stay as much as possible. I joined a photo club in my workplace and this really got me started. The people involved were really friendly and taught me so much about getting started in photog-raphy. I only had a small point and shoot camera back then but with my first paycheck I bought a used DLSR in Yongsan electronics market and ha-ven’t looked back since. I started a photo a week project this year which can be found at project168.tumblr.com.

How important is equipment for taking a good photo?

I think for certain photos the right type of equipment is essential. For any long exposure a good tripod and remote are needed, for event photography in a night-club then an external flash is needed. Although when starting out I think only the basics are needed. Work with what you have and upgrade over time.

What rules do you follow when taking photos, if any?

I don’t really follow any rules when taking photos. The main rule I try to concentrate on is the rule of thirds. This involves breaking the photo down into thirds and placing the subject in the centre. It is a good way to frame a photo and makes the compo-sition more balanced.

The Compass comes across many photographers of all levels. Some just starting out, some who have dedicated years to the craft, but all the photographers’ photos have one thing in common, their own beau-tiful story. In this issue, we interviewed Fergus Scott, a novice photographer with professional, quality photographs. We hope you enjoy the photos and tips he shares with us.

The essential element of a silhouette photo is strong light. Silhouettes are best taken at sunrise or sunset when the light is at its strongest. The subject should be placed behind the light source. The exposure on the camera should be set for the strongest light source and therefore the subject will appear under exposed. The silhouette below was taken at sunset last July. This silhouette had a moving person in it so to produce a sharp image I used a fast shutter speed. The sun was very strong which gave me a lot of light so I was able to take the photo at ISO 100. A low ISO prevents noise in the photo.

Shutter Speed: 1/4000 Aperture: F/1.8

ISO:100 Focal Length: 50mm

Page 29: June 2013 Daegu Compass

29

-continued on p30-

This next silhouette was also taken at sunset last July but there was less light this time. I used the same technique basing the exposure on the bright sky and therefore underexposing everything else. The difference in light from the last photo meant that I had to increase the ISO. I shot at ISO 1600 which adds a bit of noise to the photo. I used a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/800 of a second. I used a wide angle lens for this shot and used the lowest aperture available at F4.

Long ExposuresLong exposure photography involves taking a photo with a long shutter speed. It can give show the movement of objects or it can be used at night to get a photo in low light conditions. The shutter is open for a long time so it captures ev-erything such as light trails from moving cars. A tripod is essential for a long exposure photo as the any camera shake will show up in the photo. Using the self timer on the camera or a remote is also essential as even releasing the shutter will give a bit of camera shake. This long exposure was taken at Yongsan.

Shutter Speed: 1/800 Aperture: F/4 ISO:1600 Focal Length: 10mm

Page 30: June 2013 Daegu Compass

30 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.com

Panning

Panning is the technique of capturing a photo of something moving. The key to panning is to move your camera along with the subject you want to pho-tograph. The best subjects seem to be cyclists or

motor cyclists. The technique I use is to set the cam-era to continuous shooting mode. This will allow you to take photos in very quick succession. The shutter speed should be set to below 1/60 second. When the subject passes by take a succession of photos while moving the camera with the subject. The slow

This next long exposure was from Heyri Art Village. This was taken at night so to get the most light out of the photo while maintaining a low ISO a long exposure was necessary.

Climbing the Impossible

Conquering JanhukotWritten and photographed by Bryan Hylenski

In June of 2001, I was sitting next to my father, in the home that he, my uncle and grandfather had built together many years before. My father could barely speak, due to the infection invading his throat. He had recently lost his battle with cancer and was now just suffering from the damage of chemotherapy, hoping to enjoy his last few days with his family and friends. We stayed up late into the evenings chatting via small notes, whenever he was awake and alert.

He inquired about my recent obsession with climb-ing and my future plans. I told him about my hope to attempt Denali (Mt. McKinley), as my first big mountaineering trip. I told him of my training, skills I needed to learn, my passion for being outdoors and of course my dream to challenge myself, this time against the “coldest mountain” on earth. He laughed and of course wrote only a few words “Sounds like an expensive dream?”

Page 33: June 2013 Daegu Compass

-continued on p34-

As a “know it all” 25yr old, I told him of my plans to save money, work extra hours, etc., but that no matter what I was going to do this. He grinned and asked for his wallet. He took out a single dollar bill and handed it to me then wrote “I’m your first sponsor; don’t say I never gave you anything!” We both laughed and moved on to other subjects before he fell asleep.

Later that evening, my father passed. I took half of that dollar bill and placed it in his casket, the other half still resides today, taped inside my helmet. A year later, I sat atop the summit of Denali (at -53 degrees F) warmed by the thought of that grin my dad would flash me when he was pulling my leg! Those feelings, those overwhelm-ing feelings are why I climb.

This summer, I and 4 foreign climbers living here in South Korea will attempt another dream. A climb that that no other person in the world has been able to ac-complish. A climb, that many have attempted, but all have failed. Since the 1950s and 60s, teams of climb-ers from India, New Zealand, Australia, Korea, Canada, America and many others, have traveled to this remote

region of the world in an attempt to reach the sum-mit of this unclimbed giant…“Janhukot,” only to be sent home defeated.

In an era of commercialized mountaineering where many famed” big” mountains (Everest, Kilimanja-ro, McKinley, etc.) receive hundreds, if not thou-sands of ascents each year, the tantalizing peak of Janhukot stands apart. Nestled in the far reaches of the Indian Garhwal Himalaya, up past the sacred fountain spring of the mighty Ganges River, it beck-ons. Janhukot, [pronounced Jan-oo-cot] is one of the last great mountains, in this region, where no person has stood on its peak.

In 2010, our team of two came within 300 meters of this coveted summit. Reaching a high point, no other had seen before. A view, others had yet to achieve. Yet, despite being so close, we were turned back as well, due to poor snow and danger-ous ice conditions near the summit.

Page 34: June 2013 Daegu Compass

34 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.com

Turned back, but not defeated. In June, 2013 we will return to Janhukot, to finish the job. Our Team, The Dedicated Everyman (dedicatedev-eryman.com) is comprised of myself (Daegu), Jake Preston (Seoul), Dan Kopperud (Daejeon), Gabe Thomas (Seoul), and Jonn Jeanneret (Seoul, currently Okinawa).

Jonn, the final member of this team, will be joining us as both a climber, photographer and documentary filmmaker. Providing supporters of this team the ability to relive the adventure, as well as experience the passion and pain that is a first ascent! So, folks like my father, who never got to see me climb, can have a small glimpse into the world we care so deeply about.

To reach the toe of Janhukot demands over 60 tortuous kilometers of strenuous hiking from the nearest settlement. Guarded by two ancient glaciers, labyrinthine moraines and perilous Hi-malayan weather fronts, few humans have ever made it this far….and this is just the toe! From here begins the real climbing, which has proven even more formidable. Rock fall, avalanches, vertiginous walls of snow and ice... It is little wonder Janhukot’s summit has eluded numer-ous previous attempts. Though it can feel like purgatory, those adventurous enough to accept the challenge are rewarded with breath-taking views, precious isolation and the chance of a life-time to do something new, something bold and something worthy.

With a close knit group of experienced climbers and a grueling crucible of dedicated training, something exciting, something promising is in

DISCIPLINEForming Good Healthy Habits

Written and photographed by Stephen Elliott

Believe it or not, the awkward looking fel-low on your left, and the awkward look-ing fellow in your right are the same per-

son, with about 7 years and 70 pounds(*kg) difference. In fact, that’s me. One day I got sick of my weight interfering with my health and social life, and I did something about it.

Want to know my secret? There is a secret, and most of the weight loss infomercials and advertisements you see won’t tell you this, but it’s something you simply can’t lose weight and get in shape without it. Are you ready?

Discipline.

Disappointed? Unfortunately, the real solutions to life’s problems usually aren’t all that flashy. In fact, most solutions can be boiled down to good old fashioned discipline and hard work. But how should we build the discipline to ac-complish our goals, you ask? Take a few tips from me, and start your journey to a healthier, more disciplined, and happier you today!

1.Set some goalsYou need to know what you want, and a solid plan can keep you on track to accomplish your specific goals. Find a quiet place, and an hour or two to think really hard what you would like to accom-plish. You should have some long term (I want to run a marathon, I want 12% body fat) goals and some short term (I want to lose 5 pounds, I want to give up lattes) goals. The short term goals are the battles, and the long term goals are the war. You should keep the long term goals in mind, but focus on the short term. As you accomplish your short term goals, the long term goals will become easier to attain.

2.Make sacrifices.Nothing comes from nothing. The fact is, if you want to get your-self in shape, you’re going to have to give something up. Time for some hard truths: if your life style was conducive to good health, you would be healthy already. This will require sacrifices of your time, money, and the little indulgences you “can’t live without.” I’ve got news for you: yes, you can. A healthy body feels better than anything could possibly taste. Trust me. Everyone is different. Find out what you need to sacrifice, and dive in. As soon as you see results, giving up the next thing will be much easier.

Page 37: June 2013 Daegu Compass

37

3.Get advice. You probably know a few people that are as healthy as you want to be. Don’t be jealous. Ask them what they do! You might find an exercise program or diet plan that you really like! Your friends totally want to help you. Just ask! You can also ask your community to help you with your new lifestyle. You could join a sports league, and start getting regular ex-ercise. You could find a gym buddy or a jogging partner. Try anything that makes it easier to stay motivat-ed. Make sure you use your college educated common sense here. Trust the friend that recommends a bal-anced, low calorie diet from various sources (carbs, fats, proteins) over the one that tells you to eat cheese-burgers all day but without the bread (bread is far too delicious to be your enemy. Everything in moderation)

4.Take it one day at a time.

I’m pretty proud of the fact that I can do 75 push-ups in a row. Maybe someday, I will be able to do 100, but when I first started, that number was about 12. Actually, it was more like 11 ½ and then I fell flat on my fat, fat face. That’s okay. I chose to be proud of 11 ½. The next day, I tried for 20, and I think I got about 15. I was proud of that too. You’re not doing your body any good by trying to do everything at once, con-suming under 1500 calories a day, and doing exercises made for Olym-pic athletes when you’re just starting up. You’ll just burn out and quit after a week. Take it one day at a time, and stop to admire your progress often. Discouragement comes from com-paring yourself to others. Try instead to compare your present self to the you that you used to be. You’ll get there. The permanent changes are the ones that you implement slowly.

Above all, you’ve got to learn how to see your health goals as a way of loving yourself. Healthy eating and exercise are all about doing the best you can with what you’ve got, and what you’ve got isn’t bad at all. Ladies, your sexiness is more than your S-line, and gentlemen, your masculinity is more than your mus-cles. Learn to appreciate and respect your body, and a healthy lifestyle will naturally follow. You should step into the mirror every morning, look at your reflection and say to yourself “Dear me, who is that sexy, sexy beast in front of me?”

That’s what I do, anyway.

Breaking the CycleDealing with Chronic Back Pain

Written and photographed by Aesook Shin

A sneeze, parachuting out of airplanes or just getting up from a stationary position. Most people will experience back pain from one of

these factors in their lives. The good news? Hoo Clin-ic and acupuncture can help you get better in a week and almost always within six weeks.

In the meantime, the pain can be debilitating numbing and many other unpleasant sounding/feeling words, so that you feel as if you’ll never be able to sleep, sit down or enjoy family time again. A study done by the University of Maryland showed that back pain suffer-ers no longer need to suffer in vain. “For people with chronic low back pain, this analysis shows that acu-puncture is clearly effective in providing considerable pain relief,” says Eric Manheimer, study author and director of database and evaluation for the Universi-ty of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine. “The research also showed that acupuncture provided true pain relief. The benefit was not just due to the placebo effect.”

Traditional Western prescriptions for back pain such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or opiates – the painkillers du jour for back pain – have risks. They increase the risk of stomach ulcers, which can cause internal bleeding and some also raise the risk of heart disease. The higher class painkillers run the risk of pill addiction with over usage.

Contrary to Western prescription drugs, there are po-tential bio-mechanisms that explain how acupuncture might work to relieve pain. There are several theories about these bio-mechanisms. One theory, for exam-ple, is acupuncture activating opioid systems in the brain that respond to pain. That’s why we feel good and relaxed after every acupuncture session. It’s like taking opiates but without the messy side-effects.

In Korean medicine, we believe there are special pathways that are chosen for needle insertion called “meridians.” These meridians relate to what the tra-ditional Korean medical doctors felt were true “organ systems” and guide the placement of the acupunc-ture needles for healing ability. However, these “or-gan systems” are not necessarily the same kind of systems that are defined as traditional organ systems by modern science.

At Hoo clinic, we use acupuncture in conjunction with numerous other modern healing treatments including physiotherapeutic machines and high frequency massages. For the more open-minded souls among us, try detox moxibustion and blood letting suction cupping. They have thousands of years of history which take us back into time and let our natural in-nate healing power help ourselves to recover from a sore back.

Page 39: June 2013 Daegu Compass

39

Taken all together, acupuncture and traditional Korean medicine are both ancient and time-test-ed forms of therapy that seem to have excep-tionally few side effects and are safe for pain management. In my experience, many of my Hoo patients have found relief from pain through acupuncture.

Even with the machines at my clinic and my clin-ical expertise, it’s important to remember that back pain is a symptom, not a disease. Usually no cause is found for it. For example, you can feel pain in your back from things going wrong in almost any organ in your body. In traditional Korean medicine, back pain can also arise from the non-free flow of qi and/or blood. When the qi and blood doesn’t flow freely, there is pain. Therefore, it is essential to keep our qi and blood full and moving freely for optimal health and well-being and especially for being pain free.

Other things that help with chronic back conditions in everyday life are core exercises and Pilates. To that effect, one personal philosophy for my own back woes is from the National Academy of Sports Medicine in the US: build the base of the pyramid first, then build the top. Strong cores and backs ev-erybody!

Government appreciated Hyosung Hospital

Hyosung Hospital was designated as an obstetrics and gynecology hospital by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2011. It has also been named an

‘Accredited Organization’, a medical institution offering safe and quality medical service, being one of the first in Daegu and Gyeongbuk.

‘Accredited Organizations’ are regulated by the Korean Institute for Healthcare Accreditation and accredited by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Such organizations have to offer quality medical service and secure patients with a high-degree of specialties.

The Korean government demands that we do our job best. We received our ISQua (International Society for Quality Healthcare) certificate after passing a series of strict and high-standard inquiries from three sections.

We dedicate the results to the support and trust from our customers, and as an accredited organization, we promise to provide our best medical service in general practice as well as obstetrics and gynecology.

Sterility, do you still think it’s a woman’s problem?

Hyosung Hospital opened Sterility Research Center for infertile couples last March. It has a professional and well-organized system ranging from test to treatment. They invited a specialist from a university hospital, and offer systemic and cooperative treatment with research-ers having a wide range of clinical experiences. There are also nurses who attended professional education about sterility and thirteen sterility specialists. Moreover, they share the value of birth and life and heal the sorrow of patients. As the first non-university hospital in Daegu, the hospital runs a total sterility clinic taking care from pregnancy to postnatal care. Research Center of Hyosung Hospital, talked about sterility treatment.

◆ Both men and women have a role in infertility In 1978, pregnancy and delivery through a IVF(in vitro fertilization) succeeded for the first time in the world, and since then, medical advances including assisted reproductive technology gives hope to infertile cou-ples.Im said, “Sterility is the condition that you can not conceive, however, it’s just difficult to have a baby for most of patients who visit our clinic.” Then what are some of the causes of it? “In spite of having a normal sex life, the test is required in these cases: a wife not able to have a baby after a year of trying, a woman over 35 years old, or one having a medical history with pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, ova-ry surgery, habitual abortion, or menstrual irregularity. Also, there’s the matter of a husband having a problem with sperm.” she said. In the past, people thought that a woman is blamed for sterility but actually, it’s now known that men and women alike each hold about

a 40% ratio to the cause. On this account, her opin-ion is that they both need to try to overcome it. She said, “For women, most cases are ovulatory disorder such as menstrual irregularity and oligomenorrhea, and functional disorder like tubal blockage. For men, they are varicocele and have spermiduct blockage or a problem with sperm ”

◆ 70~80% of cases cured Usually 20~30% of infertile couples who get treatment still cannot get pregnant, which means the rest of the couples do. Sterility is not an incurable disease so it’s possible to overcome. Before getting infertility treatment, you have to get tests and know your condition in detail. Ultrasound is a basic test for women. And they will get hormone examination, hysterosalpingogram, and an endometrial biopsy to evaluate ovarian functions. Then the next step is getting treatment and procedure along with their next menstural cycle. It could take more than one or two months to finish all kinds of tests because they’re not done at once but proceeded along with one’s menstural cycle. Men will have a semen

Page 42: June 2013 Daegu Compass

42 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.com

check after 2 or 3-days of abstinence. Then do all infer-tile couples need to get treatment of artificial fertilization or in-vitro fertilization? She answered: “Depending on each cause, treatment could work then they can try spontaneous pregnancy.“

◆ Articifial fertilization and test-tube babies Artificial fertilization and in-vitro fertilization are positive ways to have a baby for infertile couples. Many are interest-ed in the treatments and visit a clinic, however, some get bewildered since the procedures are different from what they know about. She explained that “artificial fertilization is available when the fallopian tube is not blocked.” She also said they “find out the exact ovula-tion timing with ultrasound or checking hormone levels in urine, then improve the husband’s sperm fertility and inject his sperm into womb.” Tube culture, then, is done in the following cases: when the fallopian tube is blocked but also when artificial fertilization failed 3~4 times with no cause; getting pregnant is not available because of endometriosis; male infertility (when the number, mobility and shape of sperm are poor); and having anti-sperm antibodies present. The process of IVF is ‘controlled ovarian hyperstimulation→collection of eggs and sperm→external fertilization and explan-tation(3~5 days)→fertilized egg trans-plantation into a womb→pregnancy test’. She added that “It shows different success rates of IVF but it’s usually 30~40%.”

◆ Incorrect rumors about sterility She also mentioned that some people avoid sterility treatment because they believe incorrect rumors about it. “The rumor says that ovulation inducing agents or hormone shots stimulates ovary or makes super-ovulation, and it’ll cause meno-pause earlier or raises the cancer incidence rate. How-

ever, that is not true.”, she said firmly. Naturally, only one dominant follicle among many others is chosen and it prepares ovulation. The others will obsolesce. Controlled ovarian hyper-stimulation raises all follicles that started to grow before a dominant one is chosen, until ovulation period. So it doesn’t make the ovary lose its function or menopause come earlier. She emphasized that “previous research couldn’t find out that using medicine for sterility increases cancer incidence rate. Sterility examination history, type of sterility, using ovulation-inducing drugs and number of treatments are not relevant as well, so sterility med-icine is safe.”

44 DAEGU COMPASS 2013.JUNE http://daegucompass.comDaegu Centric _ THIS WILL DESTROY YOU 5 CITIES TOUR

This Will Destroy You, often abbreviated to TWDY, is an American post-rock band

from San Marcos, Texas. In many ways, the initial sound of the band was the logical destination point for four friends (Christopher Royal King, Jeremy Galindo, Raymond Brown, and Andrew Miller) that had been playing in a variety of bands together throughout their teens. In 2005, the group began writing and recording a 6-song demo, which was imme-diately picked up by Magic Bullet Records. Within weeks, the demo became “Young Mountain,” THIS WILL DESTROY YOU’s first retail full length.

From that moment on, the trajectory of THIS WILL DESTROY YOU was meteoric. Critical acclaim came pouring in overnight (Rock Sound

Magazine bestowed “Album of the Year 2006” honors on “Young Moun-tain”), the songs quickly found mar-riage to various licensing projects across film, television, web, and video projects the world over, and the album quickly shot up both indie re-tail and Apple iTunes charts. To fully illustrate the fever pitch of the mo-ment, even the Pentagon was caught up in the hysteria, using two songs in a disaster preparedness presentation held before the nation’s top military brass in the wake of New Orleans’ catastrophic Hurricane Katrina. Sud-denly, the choice between band and “real life” became not so clear for all involved.

After some domestic touring sur-rounding “Young Mountain,” the band paired with John Congleton to record “S/T,” 2008’s follow-up full-

length. As day after week after month after year piled up on the road, the rigors and alternate reality of touring life began to set in and take toll. It was amidst this darkened age of despair and equilibratory destruction that the band began to create an entirely new strain upon the trademark sounds that de-fined “Young Mountain” and “S/T.” “Tunnel Blanket” is the third proper full length from THIS WILL DESTROY YOU. While previous albums managed to strike a universal chord of human hope and near-optimism toward the future, “Tunnel Blanket” is the darker and more intricate sides of human emotion, grief, and tragedy. And at the end, it’s just as cathartic, instinctively primal, and wholly rewarding.

This Will Destroy You (TWDY)는 2005년 산마르코스, 텍사스에서 결성된 포스트락 밴드다.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 2000년대 중반에 산마르코스, 텍사스에서 결성됐다.

그때로 부터 THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 상승 궤도로 접어 들었다.

하지만 THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 여기서 무너지지 않고, “Young Moun-tain”과 “S/T”를 정의한 트레이드마크 사운드를 버리고 전혀 새로운 성격의 앨범을 냈다. “Tunnel Blanket”은 THIS WILL DE-STROY YOU의 세번째 정규 앨범이다.

2011년 포스트 록의 모범답안 MOGWAI의 첫 내한공연을 성공적으로 이뤄낸 SUPER COLOR SUPER가, 국내 수 많은 포스트록 팬들이 기다려 온 또 하나의 밴드, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU 의 첫 내한공연을 기획한다.

Helping Man’s Best FriendWritten and photographed by Emma Thompson

Although it is a principle of mine to love every poor mutt at the Korean Animal Protection So-ciety shelter, I find that the amount of affection

I am willing to express differs from dog to dog. Billy the Shih Tzu, for instance, is one of the grossest little dogs I’ve ever seen. His eyes, becoming blind, are clouded over; his teeth, not in the best of shape, ir-regularly frame his stinky little tongue; his home-cut hair is filthy and ragged; and most recently his fur has been patchy due to a fungus called malassezia. I am ashamed to admit that on more than one occasion I have foregone showing Billy physical affection, opting instead to assure him of my devotion verbally from a few feet away. It was recently my task to transport, with the help of

other stalwart volunteers, Billy the Shih Tzu and his compatriots Nellie and Happy (both are also kind of gross) to the vet. The skin issue was definitely worry-ing. The three we took to the vet, as well as two oth-ers at the shelter, all seemed to have the same issue and we wanted to keep it from spreading. Our trip to the vet had two marvellous outcomes. First, the vet assured us that the skin condition could be easily treated with oral medication. It will take some time, and may cost a few hundred thousand won to treat all the dogs, but it will be straightforward and most certainly successful, if we can procure the funds. Secondly, and more importantly, I had an epiphany with Billy. HE’S NOT THAT GROSS. Look-ing into his bizarre little face, I suddenly felt like I could

Page 47: June 2013 Daegu Compass

47

handle it. The absolute sweetness of this dog over-came me and I ventured to give him a little scratch behind the ears. He loved it. Someday, I hope, Billy will be adopted. All it will take is a few weeks of care and I’m sure he’ll be a cute little thing, not very gross at all. Until that time, however, volunteers at KAPS can help Billy and his cohorts be much less gross, even now. It was due to the gener-ous donations of volunteers that we were able to take them to the vet, and buy them some medicine. We’ll still need help, though, to continue to buy medicine until the treatment is completed. And of course, even once we rid the shelter of malassezia, there are always other jobs to do, and medicine to buy, and dogs to walk and wash and love. There are lots of ways to be involved with KAPS this summer. Some fun events are coming up! We hope to raise more money for Billy et al with a Bake Sale hosted by Buy the Book’s Farmer’s Market on May 26th. This will be a great way to help out the dogs while being covered with powdered sugar rather than dog hair. We’d be very grateful to anyone who wants to bring us a tray or two of your favourite cookies, brownies, bars or cupcakes. We also need volunteers to help us with an upcoming move. It has unfortunately become necessary to close

the KAPS shelter in Boeun. We will need vehicles and large animal crates to move more than 50 dogs from this shelter to a sister shelter on the East Coast, and to our main shelter in Daegu. This will be a major chore, but with a little organization, a lot of driving, and a lot of man power, it should be a satisfying adventure to move these dogs to their new homes. We would be grateful to anyone who can possibly pledge the use of their vehicles or crates in June. You can also bring brownies and cupcakes, but they aren’t quite as nec-essary for this event.

As always, we will also host dog walk events through-out the summer. Please come and meet Billy, and the others. If I looked that nasty I’d be in a rotten mood, but these little troopers are as sweet and friendly as can be. The love dogs are capable of is really astound-ing, and can soften the hardest of hearts, and the most rigid standards of hygiene. KAPS provides equally astounding amounts of anti-bacterial soap, so please don’t hesitate to come say hi, and give a scratch to a grateful mutt. You can find out more or contact us at http://ko-reananimals.net/ and https://www.facebook.com/KAPSAnimals.

Love in ActionSubmitted by Alex A-che / Photos by Lynn Tan

Helping others 1,000won at a Time

Love in ActionThe Love in Action ministry of Dongshin English ser-vice began in the fall of 2012. Just a few months old, it has taken on various projects to help others in need and promote awareness and compassion. Love in Ac-tion started with a few bake sales to raise funds for Kampong Cham Children’s Home in Cambodia. Over the last few months, they have raised about $1,000. It has since grown to include projects here in Korea.

Sex TraffickingThe biggest undertaking has been to tackle the issue of sex trafficking in Korea. With the help of the Daegu Women’s Rights Center, the group has learned about the issue on a local level , not only nationwide but spe-cifically to the city of Daegu; what steps are being taken to help the victims and what laws have been created to protect them. Still in its developmental stage, Love in Action has been working on a sex trafficking aware-ness presentation, in both English and Korean that can be presented to university students in the near future.

HaerimwonThe second biggest project has been their work with Haerimwon (대구혜림원), a center in Daegu for sin-gle pregnant women. A lot of these women lack family support. The center provides counseling and resources for them including a living space at the center for those

who have no home to go to, and will inevitably make the choice of keeping the child or giving it up for adop-tion. Love in Action has two main focuses. The first is to volunteer their time teaching the women English. Currently, there are five teachers volunteering their time at the center. The second focus is to hold fun events for the women, one day a month. Whether it’s a board game day, a glamour photo shoot or making crafts, it has always been a day to look forward to for both the volunteers and the women. Women’s Hope Center in PohangThe next big project is the Women’s Hope Center in Po-hang. Love in Action felt it would be good to support a local organization with fundraising efforts. Min Hwang, who started Women’s Hope Center, visited Dongshin English service in January to talk about the work of WHC. Love in Action felt it would be a worthy cause to support.”

The vision of WHC arose from a specific, actual cir-cumstance a young university student faced during an unplanned pregnancy. This young student, “Soomi”, came to the attention of a chaplain’s wife. Soomi was pregnant, unwed, suicidal, and saving funds for an il-legal abortion. Though pressured by her own family to have an abortion, Soomi faithfully and courageously chose to love and mother her child. Women’s Hope

Center, a Christian-based center, became a registered NPO in Korea on January 26, 2012. It was a miracle since many told Lynn Eggert, one of the founders, it would be very difficult to be approved since she was foreigner. WHC became the first foreigner-founded NPO registered via the Gyeonbguk province.

So far, Love in Action has raised 620,000 won for the center. The funds Love in Action will raise from the flea market/bake sale will help the center in a variety of ways. Donations will be used to pay rent for the Pohang WHC headquarters plus utilities, brochures and educa-tional pamphlets for the women, pregnancy tests and ultrasounds (though the Korean government provides money for prenatal appointments if a woman contin-ues in her pregnancy, the first ultrasound appointment to confirm pregnancy is not provided for so WHC pays for a client’s first appointment. All of WHC’s Board members and Officers, including Min Hwang, one of the founders and current Chairman and Executive Di-rector, are volunteers; but recently they have hired one manager for the Pohang CPC and one manager for the Seoul Help Desk. They have just started construction on the first home for women that need shelter.

Flea Market and Bake Sale Fundraiser! So on June 1st, join Love in Action for their ‘Flea Mar-ket and Bake Sale Fundraiser!’ at the YMCA and help raise money for the Women’s Hope Center in Pohang. It will be an outdoors flea market, if weather permits, with music, a caricature artist and a bake sale so there’s something for everyone. If you have clothing or items that you no longer use, please consider donating them for the flea market. They should be clean and in a good condition. You can drop them off at the YMCA on the 29th, 30th and 31st of May!

HUNT FOR FREEDOM

Daegu Centric _ HUNT FOR FREEDOM

Dynamic Daegu Task Force Scavenger Hunt

Well, it’s almost summer and you know what that means: it’s time to start filling your weekends with awesome plans and fun! Interested in doing that AND supporting a very worthy local cause in the process? We’ve got just the suggestion.

Last fall, the Dynamic Daegu Task force organized a highly successful charity scavenger hunt that took place all around downtown and this summer we’re at it again! The 2nd Annual ‘Hunt for Freedom’ is set for this July 6th and promises to be just as much fun (because MORE fun would just be crazy) as the last. Great prizes, great people, and most importantly, a great cause to support!

But, before we talk about the scavenger hunt, we’d like to let you know a little bit more about us. The Dynamic Daegu Task Force is a local charity group affiliated with Love146, an international organization aimed at abol-ishing child sex-slavery and human trafficking. We are a group of ten teachers here in Daegu who meet twice a month to read articles, watch videos and discuss the

issues surrounding modern day slavery. Our mission is to raise awareness around these issues, for our-selves and others, and work as agents of change in the global fight against child sex-slavery. Additionally, as a task force, we have pledged to raise $1,000 USD for the organization at large in order to help fight the cruel fate many children face. With your support we hope to meet, if not exceed, our goal.

Starting June 15th, teams (of 3-4 people) can register for the ‘Second Annual Hunt for Freedom’ by emailing [email protected] with your team name and list of team members. The registration fee is 10,000 won per person, and details on how to submit payment will be sent once we receive confirmation of your registration.

As for the event itself, things will begin and end at everyone’s favourite ex-pat haunt, Traveler’s Bar and Grill. Prior to the Scavenger Hunt, at 1:30pm, we will be hosting a brief presentation about Love146 for any-one interested in learning more. Following that, teams

Sloth Love DrunkWaygoonies Bring Big Laughs to Daegu

A group of expat comedian friends, who call them-selves the Waygoonies, are doing a three-day comedy tour (appropriately named “Sloth Love Drunk”) around Korea. They’ll be heading south to Daegu to perform at Sugar Joe’s on Saturday, June 15th. The show starts at 9:30p.m…and it’s FREE! The first show of the tour will be Friday, June 14th in Suwon at The Big Chill. They will be ending the tour in Seoul on Sunday, June 16th performing in Haebangchon(HBC) at The Orange Tree. Each show will consist of six comedians (and six very different comedic personalities) on stage. The per-formers in Daegu are Dan Wiberg, Wassim, Wilfred Lee, George White, Jonathan Burrello, and Andrew Newman. All six guys have their own unique flavor

when it comes to comedy. In George White’s case, it’s chocolate (because he’s half black…and his last name’s White. You can’t make this stuff up!!). All six have never been to Daegu, so they are looking forward to a new Korean city (and all brand new tall grey apart-ments to look at!). The Daegu show is at Sugar Joe’s. They understand this place is normally a venue for live music, so they’re hoping they don’t show up to a room full of people who were expecting something completely different (which has happened before…awkwaaaard). The show is free (they’re making sure to say that a lot). They only ask that you laugh…but only if you sincerely think it’s something funny they said. If it’s not funny or maybe

you really just don’t like the person on stage, feel free to sit, stare, and judge - judge with your eyes (the deepest, darkest parts of your eyes where the hate hides). If you’re interested in history, these friends all first met and performed together at an open mic in Bundang. Due to long commutes to Seoul to perform at open mics, Dan Wiberg decided to start a monthly comedy open mic in his own area (COMB: Comedy Open Mic Bundang) in Bundang, Gyeonggi-do. COMB brought out some people who always considered doing stand-up comedy but never gave it a chance. Also, comedians from Seoul and the surrounding areas came out to perform. From there, friendships were made, sojus were drank, and the rest is Waygoonies history.

As for the actual jokes and material, you’ll have your obvious Korean jokes and teaching stories but be pre-pared for anything. If you are easily offended, a few of the comics might not be for you. BUT, if you are a fan of comedy, you’ll be sure to enjoy the (FREE) show. Free. Not even 1+1. It’s like 0+6 if that makes sense. Bring your point cards. And your chingus.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow.

An easy step-by-step guide on how to get food delivered right to your door. Mastering food delivery by phone in Korea is not difficult. Think of all those dozens of restaurants that are just a stone's throw from your apartment. Get past the nervousness of ordering once or twice and you will see an entirely new world of dining possibilities open up before you.

Suseong-guGanga - http://www.ganga.co.krA cuisine worthy of Shiva. This upscale Indian restaurant has great curries. There naan is quite exquisite as well. You can even order samosas! Indo Bang Rangi - 3F RestaurantSanjay welcomes you! Renovated and redesigned last year, this Indian restaurant is famous for it’s curries. The chef is from India and speaks English very well. Plus, he’s super friendly and will answer all your existential Indian food questions. The restaurant is located on the 3rd floor right across from Kyungdae Buk Moon (north gate). Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions.

Maya - 2F RestaurantA wood-fired tandoor oven seeps into your senses as you enter the door to this fantastic Indian/Nepali restaurant. Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display. A cozy interior with exotic tapestries of the far east adorning the walls. Reasonable prices and great Thali sets round out this establishment. Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions.
