President’s MessageMATTHEW M. PARKER, D.D.S.

President

Supporting the CDS... simpler than you might imagine

It’s October. The nights are cool and the days are less humid once again. High school, college, and pro football is everywhere. It’s a great time of year to live in Cincinnati.

It’s also the time that I take stock of the current year and begin setting goals for the next year. If you are anything like me time has a way of getting away from you if you don’t plan out your days, weeks, and months. Without thoughtful planning, family time gets compromised and time away from the practice seems to evaporate.

In that spirit of planning, I decided to look at what a small commitment of time by our members could accomplish. Sometimes I sense that members feel that volunteering will require a huge time commitment. So, I wanted to dispel that myth and show you how helpful you can be by donating 12 hours or less a YEAR. Think about it- that’s an hour a month to keep our local dental society thriving.

For that amount of time you could:

1) Take a new colleague out to lunch and promote organized dentistry (1 hour)

2) Participate in the Leave No Veteran Behind screening day (6 hours)

3) Join a CDS committee and attend all our meetings- most committees meet twice a year (6 hours)

4) Attend every scientific/membership event hosted by the CDS (8 hours)

5) Mentor a pre-dental or dental student by allowing them to shadow in your office (up to you)

6) Support the annual executive committee installation dinner in January (4 hours)

7) Tee it up with some buddies at the Oral Health Foundation golf outing (6 hours)

8) Treat three LNVB veterans in your offices (6 hours)

9) Attend two CDS sponsored continuing education seminars (12 hours)

10) Serve on the CDS council- council meets six times a year (12 hours)

And the list goes on and on. The point is that there are many opportunities to support the CDS that do not require a lot of your valuable time. Let’s make the investment together to keep our voice strong and our profession vital and independent. Thanks for your help!

The Cincinnati Dental Society June 13, 2016 Council Meeting Minutes

Secretary: Dr. Wayne R. Wauligman

Call to Order: The June Council Meeting was held Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Cincinnati Dental Society Executive Office. President, Dr. Matthew Parker, called the meeting to order at 6:38 pm. The CDS Mission and Antitrust Statements were presented to Council with the Order of Business. Roll Call: Members Present: Drs. Brandt, Chopra, Dorr, Glogowski, Hanlon, Heck, Kelley, Khetarpal, Murphy, Newby, Osterday, Parker, Perrino, Schaeffer, Wayne Wauligman and Whitney Wauligman. Members Absent: None. Guests: Dr. Andrew Harris. The minutes from the April 25, 2016 Council Meeting were moved and accepted to be approved. The motion passed unanimously. Dr. Parker proceeded to Drs. Heck and Kelley as they had to leave the meeting early. Treasurer’s Report:

Dr. Chris Heck reported the completion of the IRS forms 990 for 2015 and moved to approve them. Dr. Murphy seconded it and the motion carried unanimously. Dr. Heck continued and reported our reserves are solid. There is a good return on our investments without too much risk. Continuing education income is significantly down. It is not anticipated to make up the deficit in income by yearend. Discussion lead to…

Dr. Murphy, for the Program Committee, reported the New Dentist Study Club members were surveyed about seminar needs. They responded they need seminars on Saturday or Sundays as they have too much going on in their lives. A bi-monthly two hour seminar with good food and great venue was also mentioned as important. Dr. Parker explained the CDS can put together a great line-up that the individual specialist cannot provide. It is expensive to hire the talent we have listed, for example, Drs. Christensen and Svirsky next year.

Dr. Heck continued by saying we have good membership retention relative to the rest of the state although our membership number is trending slightly downward. Dr. Murphy suggested the forty year old group should be a target group.

ODA Membership: Dr. Dan Kelley reported for the Sub Council on New Dentists. They received a $2,000 ADA MPG grant for a “speed dating” style event that matches new dentists and dental students looking for employment with seasoned member dentists looking to hire or sell a practice. The Sub Council discussed hosting this event during lunch on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the ODA Annual Session. The event would be free to attend, but requires registration.

June 13, 2016 Council Meeting Minutes – Page 2 President’s Report:

Dr. Parker notified us that Dr. Michael Halasz has appointed Dr. Mark Bronson as his chair designate of the ODA Annual Session. It is a four year term. Dr. Mary Ellen Wynn was reappointed to the ODA Judicial Subcommittee.

Dr. Brandt will receive the ODA Marvin Fisk Humanitarian Award at the Callahan Memorial Award Ceremony on Friday night of the annual session. As our current other ODA award nominees were not selected, Dr. Parker recommends we consider nominating them again for 2017.

Drs. Brandt, Hanlon, Murphy and Osterday’s Council positions expire yearend. Anyone wishing to continue should notify Vicki as the Nominating Committee will be meeting on August 22nd.

Dr. Parker addressed the Dental Hygiene Therapist issue at UC Blue Ash and called upon Dr. Harris. He reported on the meeting that took place with their Hygiene Director and Dean regarding their support of dental hygiene therapist. CDS was represented by: Ms. Nixon and (Drs.) Crowley, Harris, Parker, and Schaeffer. Dr. Harris indicated that he received an email from the hygiene director thanking him for his support. However, they were going to seek support from other resources in the community. Vicki received the same email, therefore, CDS is no longer sitting on their Hygiene Advisory Board effective immediately.

Dr. Parker reported that Vermont just went to Dental Therapists by a six to five vote. If it passes in Ohio, two dental therapists must sit on the Ohio State Dental Board.

CDS Oral Health Foundation:

Dr. Ken Brandt gave an update on the Patty Walter Memorial Golf Classic to be held Monday, June 20 at the Four Bridges Country Club. One hundred one golfers have registered. Eddie Merlot’s gave a $25 gift card to each golfer that participates.

Executive Director’s Report:

Members said they appreciated the “Shredding Event” and that it was fun. It is a low cost event that has proven to be a good member benefit.

This year the radiography certificates will expire. November 18th is our last Radiography Update course that is needed in order to renew certificates.

Presented by Chris Moore with the ODA, the OSHA Course, “Infection Control and Regulatory Compliance” will be held Friday, November 4, 2016.

Sasha and Ms. Nixon will be in Columbus on July 19th for “Aptify” training. “Aptify” is the new database software for tripartite dentistry.

CDS Committee Updates:

Dr. Andrew Dorr presented the names of new members in the Society; (Drs.) Kelly Kirtland, John Unger, and Michael Motto. The New Member Event, held on May 19th, was very nice. We did not have as many new members attend, but everyone seemed to enjoy the presentations, food, and venue.

September 22nd will again be the “Get to Know the Cincinnati Dental Society” event at Jack Casino. Subjects include basic accounting principles for dentistry, HIPAA, employment law, and other practice management courses.

Our very own “Family Friendly Tailgating” event will be held at the Backstage Event Center on October 16, 2016. Pumpkin painting, corn hole tournament, lunch, Bengals game will be among some of the activities.

ODA Updates:

Dr. Veronica Glogowski will attend the Access to Dental Care meeting at the ODA office on July 8th. Dr. Ruchika Khetarpal reported as the ODA Membership representative. The Council is discussing

putting together an “Ohio Mission Trip” where volunteer dentists would go to underserved areas in Ohio and perform treatment at existing dental facilities similar to the Crest Smile Shoppe in Cincinnati. The ODA intends to send out information to dental faculty members to join the ODA. Half of faculty are not members. Dental schools should help promote supporting organized dentistry.

Dr. Ken Brandt, from the ODA Foundation, reported that in memory of this being the 150th year of existence of the ODA, members may donate $250 to the Foundation by adding it to their dues statement. Dr. Brandt reported the Foundation has become more precise in granting scholarships to dental students only. There will be a mid-year assessment and the student must be a member of the ASDA.

For the Ohio Dental Political Action Committee, ODPAC, Dr. Michael Schaeffer reported anyone interested in making contributions to contact him. He reported Dr. Joe Crowley is in a three way race for ADA President, which will be determined at the October meeting in Denver.

New Business:

Dr. Wauligman noted the recent passing of Dr. Fred Lee, a former CDS and ODA President, and a humorous and engaging emcee of long ago CDS and ODA events. He was 98 years old and still had a sharp intellect.

Announcements:

The Subdistrict 9 First Meeting is Monday, July 25 at 6:30 pm. The next CDS Council Meeting in Monday, September 12th. The ODA Annual Session is September 15-18. The ADA Annual Session is in Denver from October 20-23.

The June 13, 2016 Cincinnati Dental Society Council meeting adjourned at 8:29 pm.

That’s my usual reply when someone informs me that a friend has unexpectedly died. Our mortality, as we age, becomes more difficult to ignore and it is a subject that is commonly suppressed in the deepest recesses of our consciousness. That’s how we cope and how we survive ... while pushing on to the next sunrise.

Just writing about the subject is an action rooted and filled with denial.

My Christian friends always reassure me that death is a celebration, but frankly, I’m currently not in the partying mood. In fact, as I statistically move closer and closer to judgement day, each friend that has passed away and contributed something I have cherished during my existence, produces more than just a brief moment of angst and melancholy.

And does it really matter how a friend died. After all, none of us has the power to reverse what happened that caused their demise.

This past year many Ohio dentists as well as common folks were rocked by the sudden passage of some significant “contributors” to our profession.

Please don’t misunderstand me. Every practicing dentist in Ohio, past and current, has or is making a contribution to society and the profession. The individuals I want to pay tribute to, and not all of them are dentists ... I’m going to refer to as “Dentistry’s Angels.”

In no defining order they include Darryl Dever, Dr. Dick McFarland, Dr. Jim Snelson, Dr. Patty Walter and Dr. Fred Lee.

The memories and opinions I’m sharing are mine, and hopefully I’ll stimulate a few of your own if you knew these “Angels.” I know each of them would humbly proclaim if they could ...”Geez Bob ... don’t write about me ... there are so many others that are deserving!”

To which I say “Baloney”...

Three of my tributes are for Cincy folks.

Dr. Fred Lee, all 98 years of him, was the CDS’s version of George Burns-sans the cigar! Past president dinners won’t be the same without his wit and wisdom. He was a past president of the ODA and the Cincinnati Dental Society. I never told him I had a personal nickname for him. I called him the

“Ambassador.” Back when dental society meetings were regularly attended by most members, if a new member showed up for dinner, Fred more likely than not would have the “rookie” on some CDS committee by evening’s end. That’s how much he loved the profession and respected those that became involved in it. I’m a betting man and I’ll take even odds that Fred is currently trying to convince Jesus to be a dentist when he comes back for his final visit.

Dr. Dick McFarland was also a past president of the ODA and Cincinnati Dental Society. He was a gentle giant ... all 6’4” or more of him! I never observed Dick have a mean word for or with anyone. During dental business meetings, he would observe debates about the profession’s vexing issues and would, magically it seemed, craft a solution(s) to the problem and nobody would object. He was a genuine peacemaker.

Dr. Patty Walter was never without a smile. During her time going through the chairs of the CDS and finally when she was president, she along with Dr. Ken Brandt, Linda Smith Krill and CDS past president Tom Scheer initiated a program to provide free dentistry for southwestern Ohio veterans. There wasn’t a more noble program begun by any dental society, to my knowledge, anywhere in this country.

Somewhere on some horse trail in this country there’s an empty saddle right now. “Happy trails to you, Patty.”

And Dr. “Jim” Snelson ... well I don’t think there’s any entity that he was involved in where he didn’t end up being president. Luckily the ODA and Corydon Palmer Dental Society were interests of his. I doubt there was any dental committee at the local, state or national level that didn’t benefit from his input.

But years after his ODA presidency in 1993, there wasn’t a year that passed by that I didn’t hear at the ODA Annual convention ...”Hey Jim - Forward Ever, Backward Never.” Whether he did or didn’t coin the phrase matters not. Someone would yell the phrase and Jim would raise his fist in the air in happy recognition ... and with a sly twinkle in his eyes!

Darryl Dever wasn’t a doctor!

I’m damn glad he wasn’t.

“Seriously ... c’mon ... no way! What happened?”

Daryl never met anyone he couldn’t convince that a cow pie was a really “HUGE” (Trump would have loved Darryl) chocolate chip cookie – and that it tasted great and was nutritious. If that’s not the defining trait of a lobbyist then email me your definition.

Darryl sat down with me quite a few years ago, at my insistence, and explained why the world needs lobbyists. At some period in our country’s history, politicians stopped having duels and killing each other. Instead, they stopped talking to each other when they disagreed about something. Perhaps the duels stopped because of lobbyists. You see, for quite some time American politicians REALLY haven’t liked or respected individuals not affiliated with their respective political party. It’s the “Darryl Devers” of the world who sit down with each adversary and present the necessary information so that the politicos don’t make horrible decisions. Darryl would take the party affiliations out of the equation. I can imagine Darryl saying “Does the public really benefit from this piece of legislation, and if so is there some common ground we can reach that limits the damage to those individuals, groups, associations etc. who’s ox is about to be gored.”

The “ODA Today” has for years devoted a column concerning state and national legislation that affects each of you and your practices. What wasn’t visible was Darryl’s behind-the-scenes give and take that usually resulted in favorable legislation for our profession. Who do you think has been working the restaurants, bars and back rooms of the Statehouse for the past several years helping stem the midlevel practitioner legislation from gaining momentum?

Somewhere it’s 5:00 according to Jimmy Buffet, and Darryl and the Lord are kicking back and knocking one down right now ... I’ll bet.

If there’s someone you know that you think is one of Dentistry’s “Angels,” every once in a while take a moment to say thank you while they’re still on the right side of the grass. Otherwise you’ll end up like me ... saying, “What – you’re not serious ... when did it happen?”

American Dental Association Releases CDT 2017: Dental Procedure Codes

CHICAGO, Aug. 30, 2016 — The American Dental Association (ADA) today released CDT 2017: Dental Procedure Codes, the definitive manual of codes for documentation and reimbursement. This latest edition of CDT is designed to streamline coding and help maximize reimbursement by third-party payers.

CDT 2017: Dental Procedure Codes features 11 new codes, five revised codes and one deleted code. The manual builds on previous code sets with codes that fill documentation gaps, making it easier to code quickly and accurately. More detailed options for documentation also provide better protection from legal liability, as well as fewer rejected insurance claims. The Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature in CDT 2017 is the only HIPAA-recognized code set for dentistry.

Also available from the ADA is the CDT 2017 Companion: Help Guide for the Dental Team, designed to train dental staff to code more accurately and efficiently. The completely revamped Companion is now organized by coding category, each chapter written by dental industry leaders. The book includes more than 50 new and updated coding scenarios and answers more than 100 common coding questions.

The CDT Code Check App for iOS and Android allows dental professionals to access CDT codes in the palm of their hand. An e-book and several product bundles complete the CDT 2017 offerings.

The availability of these tools allows time for staff training before the codes go into effect on Jan. 1, 2017. CDT 2017 products can be preordered at adacatalog.org or by calling the ADA Member Service Center at 1-800-947-4746.

I have had a unique experience this summer and wanted to share it with you.

Several weeks ago a man came into our office. Long story short, he was scouting locations for the movie about John Gotti currently being filmed in Cincinnati. They were looking for a dental office that looked like it might be in Queens, NY, in the 1980’s. After several visits by up to 15 people associated with the film, our office was selected. As near as I can tell from information on the internet (according to John Gotti Jr.), the story goes something like this:

On a so-called ‘dental furlough,’ Gotti says his father was escorted by armed guards from Green Haven correctional facility to a Manhattan dental office.

Chris Thielen, DDS… ‘My father would go up to the dentist’s office, open his mouth, and then go out the back of the building where one of the fellows would drive him away,’ Gotti writes. The guards, paid off with hundreds of dollars, would wait patiently as Gotti went home, changed out of his prison jumpsuit and spent quality time with Gotti Jr. and the rest of the family.

‘When it was time to return to the prison, my father’s man would drive him back to the dentist’s building, and he would emerge from the front entrance back into the custody of the marshals,’.

And so, on Tuesday, Aug. 9, our office was closed for the afternoon and 40 - 50 people set up in our parking lot and in the office to shoot Gotti (John Travolta) entering and leaving the dentist’s office. It truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Of course, we won’t know until the movie debuts what, if any, footage is actually used. A few photos are below.
