(HOPE) presentan elprograma “Primero en mi familia: Pagando unaeducación universitaria” consiste de 40 seminariosen nueve estados (y Puerto Rico) incluyendo: Arizona,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia,Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, NewJersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon,Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Utah.
La gira se dedica a aumentar el número de loshispanos que asisten a la universidad a través de unapresentación que in forma la comunidad hispana queuna educación universitaria es valiosa, alcanzable ycomprable. Cada comunidad recibirá informaciónsobre la admisión y ayuda financiera universitaria enespañol.
Un estudiante en cada evento ganará una becade $500 hacia el costo de su educación universitaria.
Mientras que el 26 por ciento de la poblaciónamericana general se recibe de la universidad, soloel 12 por ciento de hispanos se reciben de launiversidad. Los estudios demuestran que muchospadres hispanos no tienen la información básica sobrela asistencia a la universidad, el proceso de admisióna la universidad, y la ayuda financiera disponible ensu propia lengua. “Primero en mi familia: pagandouna educación universitaria” es un puente deinformación proveyendo padres y estudiantes estainformación gratis en español.
“Primero en mi familia: Pagando una educaciónuniversitaria” es parte de la iniciativa Primero en mifamilia del Sallie Mae Fund que fue lanzada en octubredel 2001. Además de los seminarios, la iniciativaincluye un programa de becas que ofrece fondos a losestudiantes que son los primeros en su familia en ir ala universidad; el primer libro en español sobre cómopagar a la universidad, titulado “Ayuda financiera parasu educación superior: Aproveche todas las opcionesque estan a su alcance”, disponible gratuito para elpúblico en general llamando sin cobrar al número 866/858-7166; y una campaña en radio de servicio público.

los más escépticos pronosticaron que no duraríamucho. ¡No conocían la tenacidad de IsabelMeléndez, su fundadora y primera presidenta!
Con los años, el Festival creció. Se añadieronreinados, noches étnicas y se convirtió en unaverdadera semana de fiestas y actividades paratoda la familia.
25 años y 17 presidentes después, SemanaHispana no es perfecta, aún continúa recibiendocríticas de los más escépticos. Lo másimportante es que se ha mantenido, bajo ladirección de distintas directivas, trabajandosiempre con la idea de mantenernos unidos.
Semana Hispana es de todos. ¡Disfrutémosla!

When it began in 1978, the skeptics predictedthat it wouldn’t last. They obviously did notknow its founder and first president IsabelMeléndez’s tenacity!
Through the years, the Festival grew. Newpageants were added, the ethnic nights werecreated and it became a true week filled offestivities and activities for the whole family.
25 years and 17 presidents later, HispanicWeek is not perfect, it is still receiving criticismsfrom those skeptics. The most important thingis that it continues, under the direction ofdifferent boards, always working trying to keepus united.
Hispanic Week is for everybody. Let’s enjoyit!

La semana pasada publicamos unartículo titulado “Ideas para ahorrar dineroen el departamento escolar” por GeorgeBrown, el cual generó muchas llamadastelefónicas. Una llamada en particular, fuehecha desde las oficinas de Servicios deInspección del Ayuntamiento de Lawrence(794-5949), acusando a Rumbo de mentircon artículos como ese. De más está decirque la persona no se identificó dejandosimplemente un mensaje en el teléfono ynosotros normalmente no reconocemosllamadas o cartas anónimas.
Esta fue diferente porque no fuesolamente una diferencia de opinión; élestaba acusando a Rumbo de mentir.Estamos muy orgullosos de hacer nuestratarea, especialmente en un tópico como este.

En días pasados, Adam’s Café fue inaugurado como un lugar acogedor en elcentro de Lawrence donde no sólo venden su bebida favorita, sino un deliciosomenú en el almuerzo y apetitosos entremeses por las noches. Si el gobernador tiene éxito en supropuesta ley requiriendo que losempleados municipales paguen un 25% delas primas de su seguro, entonces cambiará.Como los sindicatos tienen un contratoverificando que ese es uno de los beneficiosque los empleados reciben, es dudoso quelas uniones cedan ante esto a menos que laley cambie.
El Consulado de México en Bostoninforma que el Buque Escuela de la MarinaMexicana “Huasteco” realizara una visita aBoston del 25 de 27 de junio.
El buque abrirá sus puertas al públicode las 10 AM a las 4 PM el 25 y el 26 dejunio y estará anclado en el “CharlestownNavy Yard” junto al USS Constitution.
El buque mide 77 metros de eslora y12.80 metros de manga. Fue construido en

El pasado domingo un grupo desimpatizantes del Partido Reformista SocialCristiano (PRSC), quienes en particularapoyan las aspiraciones de los candidatospor ese partido a la presidencia yvicepresidencia de Eduardo Estrella y JoséHazim Frappier, respectivamente, pasarona formar parte del Movimiento InstitucionalReformista, por los que fueron juramentadospor el secretario de dicho movimiento JoséA. Gerónimo, en un acto celebrado en elrestaurante Down East Fish and Chips deesta ciudad.
La actividad política partidista se iniciócon las palabras de apertura a cargo delasesor político de la organización, FrankVeloz, quien dijo que se había arribado alfinal de una intensa jornada, rica enconocimientos y vivificante en expresionesde alto contenido y vigor.
“Hoy nos atrevemos a decir y creo quees el sentir generalizado, que podemoscelebrar una fiesta de homenaje alcrecimiento de nuestro MovimientoInstitucional Reformista, y al triunfo denuestros candidatos Eduardo Estrella y JoséHazim en la pasada convención del PRSC”.
De otro lado, Veloz señaló que,“Estamos en el 2003, momento preciso paraactivar una luz al final del túnel; el próximoaño saldremos de los momentos de fangosy de incertidumbre que hoy vive el pueblodominicano.”
Luego Veloz dio paso a Juan Gerónimo,Secretario General de MIR, quien presentóa las personas que tomaron el juramentocomo nuevos integrantes del movimiento.
Asimismo, durante el acto de
juramentación fueron presentados MilagrosGuzmán, Actas y Correspondencias;Randolph Domínguez, Prensa yPropaganda; y José M. Felipe, Sub-secretario de Organización, nuevosmiembros de la directiva del MovimientoInstitucional Reformista, luego de unareestructuración de la directiva.
Luego de ser juramentado Domínguezseñaló que es tiempo de que, en la República
Dominicana haya cambiospositivos, tanto para losdominicanos que viven allácomo para los que residen enel extranjero. “Debemos trabajar por doscandidatos con la virtud yexperiencia de Estrella yHazim, para sacar haciaadelante a la RepúblicaDominicana”, dijoDomínguez. Los juramentados fueron:Rosa De León, DiómedesBetances, Marino Marte, JoséDomínguez, Betty Villa, AnaPérez, Cesarina Encarnación yCarmen Infante.
Habla José GerónimoUn año atrás quedó formalmente
constituido el Movimiento InstitucionalReformista (MIR), para ese entonces losmiembros del mismo aseguraron habernacido con la finalidad de apoyar la pre-candidatura de José Hazim Frappier, sinembargo el MIR ha seguido funcionando, ypara mucha gente es un funcionamientoindependiente del trabajo que realiza la filialdel Partido Reformista Social Cristiano enesta ciudad de Lawrence, lo que puede sercatalogado como una acción que divide alPRSC.
Sin embargo al cuestionar al secretariode la entidad, José Jerónimo, este negó queexista división entre los miembros del PRSCen esta ciudad.
“Debido a las circunstancias y el hechode que habían siete pre-candidatosnominados a la presidencia, nos vimosprecisados a seguir a un candidato.Escogimos a Hazim, ya que ha sido el únicodirigente y aspirante presidencial que en losúltimos 15 años ha visitado a los reformistasde esta área en menos de dos años”, apuntaGerónimo.

MIR que tomaron la decisión de continuarcon el movimiento luego de haber sidoelegido como candidato presidencial delPRSC a Eduardo Estrella quien junto aHazim comparte la boleta electoral delpartido rojo.
“Continuaremos trabajando ganemos ono, estamos abiertos a trabajar juntos,siempre y cuando nos apoyen. Si loscandidatos lo deciden nosotros seguiremosadelante”, concluyó.

Northern Essex Community Collegereveló recientemente un centro reciénrenovado y completamente provisto depersonal para la planificación y consejeríade carreras en Lawrence, gracias a unaconcesión federal de $2 millones que launiversidad recibió el verano pasado paradesarrollar y para ofrecer programas yservicios a los estudiantes hispanos. ElCentro de Planificación de Carreras yConsejería está situado en el edificio JohnR. Dimitry en el 45 de la Calle Franklin.
El financiamiento — $417,000 anualespor un total de cinco años - viene del U.S.Department of Education’s Title VImproving Institutions Grant, bajo elPrograma de Instituciones Sirviendo aHispanos.
Con la apertura de este centro, la ayudafinanciera, los servicios académicos,consejería, asesoramiento y otros serviciosestarán situados en un mismo lugar,haciendo más fácil que los estudiantestengan acceso a los servicios que estándisponibles. También habrá opcionesadicionales de ayuda disponibles para losestudiantes hispanos, tales como programasdiseñados para mejorar sus habilidadesbásicas y para identificar opciones decarreras. El centro seguirá a todos losestudiantes hispanos para asegurar que estánalcanzando el éxito académico.
Tres nuevos miembros biculturales seunen a Carlos Matos, director de laconcesión del Título V. Ellos son: LizbethOrtiz de Lawrence, oficial de ayudafinanciera; Xavier Pelaez de Byfield,consejero de desarrollo de carreras; y GiselaRamirez-Nash de North Andover, consejeracomunitaria, también han sido empleadoscon el financiamiento de la concesión.
Estos fondos de Título V estándiseñados para mejorar y para consolidarla capacidad de una institución de servir aestudiantes hispanos y a individuos de bajosingresos. Northern Essex CommunityCollege – el cual es 45% hispano – fueseñalada como una institución que sirvehispanos en febrero de 2001. Para serconsiderado, las universidades deben teneruna población estudiantil que sea por lomenos un 25 por ciento de hispanos.
Mary Ellen Ashley, quien bosquejó laconcesión y es el vice presidente de launiversidad para los servicios estudiantiles,dijo que el foco de esta concesión es el éxitodel estudiante. “Quisiéramos que másestudiantes latinos tengan éxito,” ella dijo.“Cuando un estudiante haga contacto connuestro centro, descubriremos cuáles sonsus necesidades, y no lo dejaremos ir hastaque se resuelven esas necesidades.”
Ashley está muy satisfecha con elnuevo espacio dedicado al centro y el calibrede los miembros del personal bilingüesrecientemente empleados. “Nuestros cuatromiembros bilingües del personal estánconectados con las necesidades de lacomunidad hispana. Estoy muy contenta alpensar en lo que podremos lograr juntos.”
Por los últimos dos años, Carlos Matosha sido encargado del proyecto “Third TierCities”, una sociedad con NortheasternUniversidad y la Cámara de Comercio deHolyoke, financiado por el Departamentode Trabajo de los Estados Unidos.
Matos tiene una licenciatura de SaintAnselm College y está terminando elmasters en la Universidad de Massachusetts.El fue profesor en el sistema escolar públicode Lawrence. Matos fue ayudantelegislativo del Representante Estatal JoséL. Santiago de Massachusetts y del ViceGobernador de Rhode Island CharlesFogarty.
En su posición actual, Matos se estáconcentrando en realzar los índices de lagraduación de estudiantes hispanos enNECC con la meta de aumentar su éxitoeducativo.
Northern Essex Community College abre su nuevo Centrode Planificación de Carreras y Consejería en Lawrence
Lizbeth Ortiz recibió a su asociado deNorthern Essex y recibirá su bachillerato deMerrimack College en diciembre. Ella hatrabajado en Northern Essex por tres años,como contadora y como ayudanteadministrativa en las oficinas de finanzasespecializada en el servicio del estudiante.Su papel en este equipo es aconsejar aestudiantes en opciones de ayudafinancieras.
Graduado de la Universidad deMiddlebury, Xavier Pelaez tiene un extensoconocimiento en ventas y entrenamientocorporativo. Por los últimos dos años, élha sido ejecutivo de Diversa TrainingPartners, una compañía de entrenamientobilingüe en Newburyport. Antes de eso, élfue encargado de entrenamiento de ArrowElectronics en North Reading.
Graduado de la Escuela de Oficiales enel Centro de Entrenamiento Naval enNewport, RI y el ex oficial de entrenamientoen la marina de Estados Unidos, Pelaez estádiseñando un programa académico y deconsejería para el campus de Lawrence y
es responsable de determinar lasnecesidades y las metas en estas áreas,coordinando internados y programas dementores, así como crear un sistema paradeterminar metas del estudiante y medir susresultados.
Gisela Ramirez-Nash sostiene unbachillerato de la universidad de PuertoRico y una maestría en AdministraciónPública de la Universidad Americana. Ellaha trabajado como trabajadora social enPuerto Rico, y recientemente como analistadel la fuerza aérea de Estados Unidos y elejército de Estados Unidos.
Bajo concesión del Título V, Ramirez-Nash está desarrollando un programa dementores de estudiantes, está adaptando ycreando componentes para servir lo mejorposible a la población latina en NorthernEssex.
Además de centralizar y de realzar losservicios para los estudiantes hispanos, ladádiva financiará el empleo de tres personasbilingües y biculturales que sirven de

90% de la reducción de lasemisiones de mercurio deplantas poderosas es necesariapara proteger las personas y lafauna y la flora enMassachusetts.
La coalición da a conocer unreporte adelantado de lasnuevas reglas estatales quepodrán limitar la polución delmercurio.
La National Wildlife Federation ymiembros de los grupos de New EnglandZero Mercury Campaign revelaron unnuevo reporte confirmando el peligro porla contaminación del mercurio para laspersonas y la flora y la fauna a través deltodo el estado de Massachusetts. Los gruposhacen un llamado al Departamento de
Protección Ambiental de Massachusetts(DEP) para insistir en una reducción del90% mientras que el DEP se prepara enredactar reglas que permitan controlar lasemisiones de mercurio aerotransportadas decuatro plantas poderosas en el estado. Losgrupos hacen un llamado que garantice elque cada una de las plantas poderosas estérequerida a reducir emisiones para protegerlas comunidades cercanas.
“Nosotros estimamos que 118,000mujeres en edad de procrear enMassachusetts están anualmente expuestasa los niveles de mercurio lo que puede dañarsus niños no nacidos,” dijo Eric Palola,Director de National Wildlife Federation dela oficina de la región nordeste. “Elmercurio es una persistente yparticularmente desagradable neurotoxina,y es por esto que las reducciones profundasson necesarias ahora.”
“De acuerdo a un reciente reporte deMA DEP, es factible para reducir las
emisiones del mercurio de las plantaspoderosas de combustión del carbón de un85 a un 95%,” dijo Cindy LuppiOrganizadora de Clean Water Action. “Nohay excusa para fallar en requerir profundasreducciones en la emisión de esas plantasde carbón, nosotros esperamos el redactarreglas que resulten en que este nivelmejore.”
El reporte señala que de los 67contaminantes emitidos de las plantaspoderosas de carbón, la agencia de EstadosUnidos de Protección Ambiental haidentificado al mercurio como el másproblemático. En adición, el reporteencontró que los niveles del mercurio en lafuente de agua potable de Boston, laReserva de Quabbin, son cinco veces tanaltos como los estándares del nivel de saludEPA que fue desarrollado por la región delos Grandes Lagos.
Las advertencias al consumo delpescado a nivel estatal están en efecto a
través de Massachusetts y la industria delas especies de la fauna y la flora tales comonutria de ríos, visón, y aves de orilla se lesha encontrado niveles elevados de nivelesde mercurio en su sangre y en los tejidos.El reporte además refleja el incremento delriesgo para las personas y las comunidadesque viven cerca de plantas de alto poder. ElUS EPA encontró que el 74% de exposiciónde las personas al mercurio dentro de unespacio de 1.5 millas de un tamaño mediode una planta de 375-megavatios viene deuna planta ponderosa.
Un Plan de Acción de Mercurio de1998 firmado por los gobernadores deNueva Inglaterra y los primer ministros delEste de Canadá demandó el 50% dereducción de fuentes de emisiones demercurio en la región hasta el 2003, seguidapor una “virtual eliminación” a largo plazo.Debido a la persistencia de los vientos enlas plantas de carbón en la zona del mediooeste, la mitad del mercurioaerotransportado se estima que estáoriginado en la parte fuera del estado. Sinembargo, los grupos afirman que es por elalto tóxico del mercurio, que el DEP tomarátodos los pasos para limitar los impactos delas fuentes de mercurio aerotransportado,especialmente para las personas que vivenen la cercanía de esas plantas, y están enalto de riesgo de polución local.
En su reporte los grupos han enfocado4 directrices que las nuevas reglas a lasplantas de alto poder necesitan reunir:1. Cada una de las cuatro plantas decarbón de Massachusetts necesitan reuniruna especifica reducción en su tarifa.2. Una meta a nivel estatal de no menosque un 90% es necesaria y lograda.3. Coordinación con otra reducción en lareducción tecnológicas de la polución (talescomo dióxido de sulfuro u óxido denitrógeno) es deseable y puede sereconómicamente más eficiente.4. El concepto de emisionescomercializadas las cuales han sidopermitidas por otros contaminantes menostóxicos (tales como SO2 y NOx) en el nivelfederal no se podrá permitir sustanciastóxicas como el mercurio.

NECC’s College forKids has some Openings

Northern Essex Community Collegerecently unveiled a newly renovated andfully staffed one-stop center for careerplanning and advising in Lawrence, thanksto a $2 million federal grant which thecollege received last summer to develop andimplement programs and services forHispanic students. The Career Planningand Advising Center (CPAC) is located inthe college’s John R. Dimitry Building at45 Franklin Street.
The funding—$417,000 a year for fiveyears-comes from the U.S. Department ofEducation’s Title V Improving InstitutionsGrant, under the Hispanic ServingInstitution Program.
With the opening of CPAC, financialaid, academic advising, counseling andother services will be located in one place,making it easier for students to access thevast array of services that are available.There also will be additional support optionsavailable to Hispanic students, such asprograms designed to sharpen basic skillsand identify career options. The one-stopcenter will track all Hispanic students toinsure that they are achieving academicsuccess.
Four new bicultural staff members-Carlos Matos of Lawrence, director of theTitle V grant; Lizbeth Ortiz of Lawrence,financial aid officer; Xavier Pelaez ofByfield, career development counselor; andGisela Ramirez-Nash of North Andover,community outreach counselor- have alsobeen hired with funding from the grant.
These Title V funds are designed toimprove and strengthen an institution’scapacity to serve Hispanic students and low-income individuals. Northern EssexCommunity College’s Lawrence Campus-which is 45% Hispanic—was designated asa Hispanic Serving Institution in February of2001. In order to be considered, colleges anduniversities must have a student populationthat is at least 25 percent Hispanic.
Mary Ellen Ashley, who drafted thegrant and is the college’s senior vicepresident for enrollment management andstudent services, said the focus of this grantis student success. “We want more Latinostudents to be successful,” she said. “When
a student makes contact with our one-stopcenter, we’ll find out what their needs are,and we won’t let go of them until those needsare met.”
Ashley is very pleased with the newspace and the caliber of the recently hiredbilingual staff members. “Our four newbilingual staff members are smart andconnected with the needs of the Hispaniccommunity. I’m very excited about whatwe will be able to accomplish together.”

Gisela Ramirez-Nash holds abachelor’s from the University of PuertoRico and a Master’s in PublicAdministration from The AmericanUniversity. She has worked as a socialworker in Puerto Rico, and, most recently,as a management analyst for the UnitedStates Air Force and the United States Army.
Under the Title V grant, Ramirez-Nashis developing a Student Mentor Program,adapting and creating components to bestserve the Latino population at NorthernEssex.
In addition to centralizing andenhancing services for Hispanic students,the grant will fund the hiring of threebilingual, bicultural faculty role models whowill inspire and guide students in theiracademic experiences and career choices.Working in partnership with experiencedNorthern Essex faculty members, thesethree new faculty will first design and thenimplement supplemental instructionalmaterial to assist student progress in math,science, and reading and writing English.The academic component of the grant willget started this summer.

For the past two years, Carlos Matoshas been project manager for NorthernEssex Community College’s “Third TierCities” Project, a partnership withNortheastern University and the HolyokeChamber of Commerce, funded by the U.S.Department of Labor.
Matos holds a bachelor’s degree fromSaint Anselm College and is completinggraduate coursework at the University ofMassachusetts. A former teacher in theLawrence Public School System. Matoswas a legislative assistant to bothMassachusetts State Representative JoseSantiago and Rhode Island LieutenantGovernor Charles Fogarty.
In his current position, Matos isconcentrating on enhancing the graduationrates of Hispanic students at Northern Essexwith the goal of increasing their educationalsuccess.
Newport, RI and former training officer inthe United States Navy, Pelaez is designingan academic/career advising program for thecollege’s Lawrence Campus and isresponsible for assessing student needs andgoals in these areas, coordinatinginternships and mentoring programs, andcreating a system for assessing student goalsand measuring outcomes.

Last year the fire boys and girls weregiven a budget of $6,334,195. If everybodyremembers when the poop hit the fan andthe cutbacks came, the fire department’sbudget was reduced to $6,135,350, a lossof $198,445. This, of course, was unveiledat a council meeting, sans chief fire in thepants, surrounded with much dissension.The hack echelon of the police department,in other words, the chosen hacks, camedressed in their new police uniforms, a fewin their ski après togs, side arms in placeand shiny, to bolster up the queens decree.It was sparkling display of abuse of powerfoisted by one town department, upon theother.
This fiscal year looks like Chief Firein the Pants has requested $5,948,271.Queenie knowing it is an election year isgoing to give the fire boys and girls$6,604,620, a whopping increase of$756,349, above and beyond Fire in thePants’ request.
Now I want to remind you of a littlesaying that perhaps has slipped your minds.Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twiceshame on me!

On Saturday, June 14, 2003, our veryown queen shar had a picnic. I wonder ifLeeAnn was grilling. Mikey donned incoonskin cap lurking around killing…killing the English language, that is. Thispicnic was held in Greycourt Park.Greycourt Park has become a bone ofcontention as of late due to its lack of accessto the public.
Well, it appears if you were wondering,this park is apparently a private park for oldshar’s campaign functions. Not only did shemonopolize the park, she ringed theclubhouse… err… I mean gatehouse withPollard for Mayor signs.
Further, when the people entered thetown hall parking lot for access to thepollard park, the picnickers were given abumper sticker… Pollard for Mayor. Hersignature green with the children picturedon the little family silhouette. Accordingto the Massachusetts Board of Ethics, thisprivate little party, using public resourcesis illegal, which would mean that all theproceeds received to further the queen’sreign of terror are ill gotten gains. In otherwords, illegal contributions.
I know, I know, since when does thequeen back down when she breaks the law?She owns the law in Methuen. I wonder ifthe acting badly police chief, his trustydawwg, and the rest of the pups were astridetheir trusty hogs, handling crowd control.You know how rowdy those huffers can gettrying to get closest to the queen to kiss herahhh… ring, ring that is! It’s down rightdog eats dog! Most of them depend on thequeen for their very existence.
The fundraiser was billed at the top ofthe ticket as “Flag Day”, in the body of theticket it was described as “Mayor SharonPollard’s Family Picnic”. Bumper stickers,stickers, kiddy grab bags with bubbles hadstickers on it, balloons, all emblazoned withSharon Pollard for Mayor. Admission, $12for adults, $5 for children.
I did not see this little shindigadvertised in any of the papers. I did nothear it being promoted on WCCM Radio1490 AM, Ronnie Ford’s Hot Line Show. Ihave to assume the guest list was limited toold shar and her extended family orcontributors. Her private money list.

You know, boys and girls of the firedepartment, when you go into the votingbooth, no one knows whom you vote for.The next time old shar grabs your hand,peers into your eyes gives you a hug andkiss, who’s fooling who?
I shall be watching with great interest,counting fools, if you have learned anythingin the last three and a half years. Are youtired of being ridden hard and put down wet?
Now for the taketh away part;remember, I missed my calling as afortuneteller. The budget will be whippedthrough by the knickknacks on the 24th ofJune. Then after the election, if the queengets to plank her butt down on the thronefor the last time, a lame duck mind you,when it comes time to set the tax rate, shewill taketh away a great majority of that$756,349 windfall. I wouldn’t be surprisedif not all and more. It will be up to the fireboys and girls if they should then don thedunce cap!
Methuenites. One thing you can do forstarters is to call the Massachusetts StateBoard of Ethics. I’ll be frank, don’t expectmuch, but to register a complaint and doremind those state employees, that perhapsthe Board’s sole existence is to advise thesesmarmy politicos, however, we are the onesthat pay their salaries. If when a very largeindiscretion like this illegal fundraiser, usingpublic property and public resources is notdealt with swiftly and judiciously by thesepublic employees, then why does theMassachusetts State Board of Ethics exist?
I see two fair and equitable solutions.(Gosh, you’d think I was wearing the pinthe mayor and her hacks are currentlysporting; it says, “Part of the Solution”.)The first solution is for Sharon M.oneyPollard to give back every cent gleaned fromthis illegal fundraiser. Pay for the rental ofthe gatehouse, pay for the police, and paythe DPW to clean up the trash that was strewover a section of Greycourt Park, Sundayafternoon. Second, make the park availableto each and every other candidate, alongwith the gatehouse, the police and the DPW.
That still leaves me wondering aboutthe printing of the tickets, their distribution,and a mailing if one indeed was done, to aspecial family of old shar’s staunchestcampaign supporter, you know, the ones thatare getting something in return, somethingmost don’t deserve. I wonder if that big
contributor Billy DiPardo wasthere. Never mind, I shouldn’twonder!

Shihan Larry F. Giordano, ChiefInstructor of the Giordano Family MethuenKarate Association had his studentsparticipate in an annual rite of spring, beachtraining, where Hampton Beach become thedojo for a day.
Students arrived at the Methuen dojoto catch a bus to Hampton Beach. Uponarrival several students, led by SempaiJarrod Brown, greeted the bus.
As its custom in the dojo, the students
bowed in the traditional Seizan position tobegin the morning of training. This wasfollowed by spirited basics, which includedkicks and punches as well as push-ups. Abrisk run followed and all the students thenparticipated in relay races.
The annual wrestling matches followedwhere Sempai Steve Dwinels showed hisspirit as he sumo wrestled the Black Beltsthat were available.

The bowing ceremony, happy High-Fives and pictures ended the training sessionby the edge of the chilly Atlantic water.

At the last budget hearing (that was nottelevised), seems like Mikey Condon, whoran for office on the premise that he was forALL of Methuen, got lost. He never madeit to the meeting. I realize that theSweetheart Inn is a trek to town hall, butafter all they just put the second coat of hottop on West Street for a smoother ride.
At the budget hearing on June 10, 2003,Mikey graced the dais. The problem wasthat he failed to bring along with him, hiscopy of the budget report. Perhaps he hadmemorized it.
At first, when it was brought to myattention, I stared to see if he was asleep.He has been known to nod off when he wasvice chairman. Then all of a sudden hestirred, just in time to yell out MOTION TOADJOURN.
For those of my loyal readers who forone moment thought that Mikey representedall the people of Methuen, perhaps this willconvince you that his only interest is self,and his only job is to advance the agenda ofthe queen. No questions asked. One has towonder if he even open the envelope thatbudget came in. NAWWWWW! It wasgreat for starting that fire for Leeann to grillthem after Mikey killed them! Life in thewoods looks like it agrees with him.

Petition for the Purpose of AmendingChapter 201 of the Acts and Resolves of1945. I’ll cut to the chase. Chapter 201provides for a permanent intermittent policeforce for the Town of Methuen. Since 1945there have been 12 intermittent police, nowin the year of the acting badly police chiefwith his trusty dawwg by his side and theever-present pesky pups, we now need andadditional 12 intermittent police officers.An intermittent police position is a lifetimeappointment. Last week we published the article“Money Saving Tips for SchoolDepartment” by George Brown, whichgenerated many telephone calls. One call,particularly, was from the InspectionalServices Department at Lawrence City Hall(794-5949), accusing Rumbo of telling lieswith articles such as this one. Needless tosay that the caller failed to identify himselfsimple leaving a message on the telephoneand we normally do not acknowledgeanonymous calls or letters.
This one was different because it wasnot just a difference of opinion; he wasaccusing Rumbo of lying. We prideourselves of doing our homework,especially on a topic like that one.
The City of Lawrence is trying to hidethe fact that for the many years all health
insurance for “individual” plan was free.They paid only for the family plan.
We have in our possession the City ofLawrence Health Insurance Rates for 2001,2002 and the one effective in July 1, 2003.Since 2001, employees pay 10% of thepremiums while the city picks up the tabfor 90% of the cost. Perhaps thatclarification should have appeared in theoriginal article because 10% is a ridiculousfigure for the city.
If the governor succeeds in hisproposed law requiring 25% premiumpayment by employees in Massachusetts,then it will change. Since the unions have acontract stating that as one of theemployment benefits their employees are toreceive, is very doubtful that the unions willgive in unless the law changes.
Health insurance benefits forcity employees in Lawrence
The Massachusetts FirefightingAcademy provides effective training to fireservice personnel of the cities, towns andfire districts of the Commonwealth andappropriate public and private sectororganizations. The MFA conducts tuitionfree training programs for all ranks ofMassachusetts firefighters from entry levelto chief officers. All volunteer, call, and full-time firefighters are welcome to attend thesetraining programs which are conducted onweekdays, at night and on weekends, at theFirefighting Academy headquarters in Stowand at municipal and county training sitesthroughout the Commonwealth.
The Massachusetts FirefightingAcademy was first established in 1971 onthe grounds of the former Cushing Hospitalin Framingham. Soon after that beginning,training was shifted to the site of a formerCivilian Conservation Corps Camp in Stow.Fire training continued on that site, usingexisting buildings, until an arson firedestroyed the main building in 1982.
The $11 million, state-of-the-art facilitythere today began to emerge from the ashesin September 1987. The administration and
classroom building was completed in 1989.The fire training yard was completed in1991 and the flammable gas training yardwas completed in 1992.
Today, a full-time staff of 15 and a part-time staff of approximately 300 provideeffective training to the firefighters of thecities, towns and fire districts of theCommonwealth. Students study in modernclassrooms and are trained in realistic fireground situations. Quality training programsserving more than 12,000 firefighters of allranks are delivered each year at both theStow campus and other locations throughoutthe state.
