    Considering the site or

    constructed model at two

    scales (1:1 and 1:20), cre-

    ate a compositional sculp-

    ture. With knowledge of

    proportion, dimmension and

    physicality, use sets of ele-

    ments to design a pattern

The room is a private retreat for an individual. A roois simple enough to pursue a single architectural ide

yet it is complex enough to address most architectur

issues. The Room is, in a way, a primitive hut of archite

ture, a kind of zero point in design from which everythin

can be addressed and everything can be anticipate

    In this week long outdoor

    workshop, groups of stu-

    dents constructed and

    tested various structural

    prototypes. In tensegrity

structures, compression mem-bers act independantly from

    each other. The structure is

    self supporting and does not

    require external forces such

    as gravity. This 1:20 tensegri-

    ty structure uses the ground

as a tension member to sup-

    port three individual modules.

This two week group project examined ideas of

site, views and pathways. After various mater-

ial studies, models, full scale mock ups and

computer modeling, the project wasinstalledin modules on a popular pedestrian pathway on

Halifaxs lively spring garden road. The proj-

ect gathered public attention and encouraged

(ventilation, acoustic concerns, user groups, equipm

COMPLEX SURFACES: UNFOLDEDINTO A CONTIGUOUS PATTERN

    4502: REPRESENTATION

    MARCH, 2009

    S. PARCELL

    After studying textile patterns (combining

objects and images into contiguous two-dimensi-

onal patterns), and origami, I completed a meas-

ured drawing of the student lounge. By unfol-

ding the various ceiling plans and elevations off

of the central floor plan, I combined the plan

and elevation information into unfolded eleva-

tions that would later be used in a template. It

was quite unnatural to combine this informationand the exercise often proved puzzling and diff-

    icult.

ecology, economy and infrastructure of urban and rural co-

astal settlements. Various humanities and technogloy proje-

cts were completed in studio before beginning field work.

Commencing on protected salt marshes in Nova Scotias Bay

of Fundy, we examined the confliction of static architecture in

dynamic landscapes. A tour of the coastal United States pre-

sented the students with research labs, lectures, studio work,

and collaboration with other architecture schools.
