These IEP rail cars will be loaded onto new “K” Line vessels from the Port of Tokuyama-Kudamatsu, located near Hitachi’s Kasado plant, and will be discharged at the nearest port on the east coast of the UK to Newton

Aycliffe, where Hitachi is constructing the train plant for these rail cars.

A series of “K” Line’s new 7500-unit size RORO vessels are now under

construction in Japan. Some of

these vessels will be deployed into the Japan – Europe

trade, and will serve for this transportation project from July

onward for several years.

A total of 10 vessels of this series of 7500-unit size have been ordered with state-of-the-art design. The first vessel will be delivered in July 2015. These new vessels will give us an increased car-carrying

capacity of 20% as well as much more space for High & Heavy cargo, including Construction Machinery. With these newly-designed vessels, “K” Line will continue to proactively increase the handling of railway infrastructure as exports of these cargo from Japan are expected to increase from now on.

In addition, with these new state-of-the-art vessels, we will be better prepared to minimise the impact on Global Environment by accomplishing safe navigation.

KAWASAKI KISEN KAISHA, LTD. (“K” Line) is pleased to

announce that the “Millau Bridge”, the first of five 14,000 TEU vessels ordered in 2013, has been duly delivered to us today at Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Hiroshima Shipyard.

The vision puts forward plans so that we can realise a sustainable society, hand on this blue and beautiful ocean to the next generation, and at the same time contribute to society and the well-being and prosperous

lifestyle of people around the world.

In the future global environment, it is expected that the worldwide population will increase rapidly in emerging countries, and will lead to faster economic growth and greater demand for natural resources, foods, water and industrial products such as cars and home electric appliances. As a result, the environmental issues, such as resources depletion and global warming, will become more serious problems.

Shipping is essentially a very efficient and eco-friendly transportation mode that can

transport a large amount of goods at one time, therefore we have identified our course of action in order to reduce environmental impact to as close to zero as possible, and fulfill our responsibilities as a key industry operating to support people’s well-being and prosperous lifestyles.

We are taking our firm steps towards our “Goals of 2050” set out in our Environmental vision through a variety of initiatives related to environmental

Fiat Industrial first began operations as a global leader in the capital goods sector on 1 January 2011, following the merger of the activities of Iveco, CNH and FPT Industrial from Fiat S.p.A. CNH, a world leader in the agricultural and construction equipment businesses, was established on November 12, 1999, through the merger of New Holland N.V. and Case Corporation.

CNH Industrial’s brands bring forth a rich history that dates back more than 170 years. Today, the company’s expertise spans industries and continents, building upon a great tradition of historic achievements and significant contribution to the development of technological know-how in the industries in which it operates. CNH Industrial’s brands continue to build upon this base as they deliver their customers with

state-of-the-art technology as global leaders in their respective businesses.

In November 2012 CNH Industrial N.V. was incorporated and became operational in September 2013 as a result of the mergers of Fiat Industrial S.p.A. and CNH Global N.V.

Every square metre of deck space was used: exact planning of the stowage on deck guaranteed that SAL’s MV Svenja could load the eight tugs and later, the E-House, all in one voyage.

The basis for this extraordinary scope of work is the huge loading capacity

of the 183 type – the largest vessel type in the SAL fleet. Equipped with two cranes, which can each lift up to 1000 tons weight, these vessels come with a hold of 107 x 17 x 13.5m and an unobstructed deck space of 128.5 x 27.5m. These new generation heavy lift ships feature the most advanced

technology available, and hence meet up-to-date market requirements.

With this shipment it was necessary to develop an innovative lifting arrangement so as to be able to safely load and discharge the E-House amidst

the already loaded and lashed tugs.

Sven Weide-Weddig, Project Engineer of SAL Heavy Lift gives his impressions of this complex task.

“It was a great advantage that we were able to load all the tugs with a single hook – despite the weight of up to 500t. Hence we gained utmost flexibility during the rotation of loading and discharging. Of course the perfect cooperation between Damen and SAL created an excellent basis for planning this job.

Compared to the tugs the E-House was a completely unique and complex item, which we had to analyse very carefully.

The biggest challenge was the weight spreading of the E-House. It came with a weight of 1263t, but had only four legs with a diameter of 1.2m to distribute the load. In addition to that the

centre of gravity was very high, which resulted in very high reaction forces. SAL made a detailed FEM analysis to critically examine the load introduction into the main deck.

After having identified the main issues SAL designed and engineered a tailor-made grillage. The grillage distributed the load directly into the selected strong points of the deck, so no further weight spreading was necessary.

What is important to emphasise is that again this great job could only be done with the support of our competent and specialised crew on board, as well as the absolutely engaged engineering teams of Damen and SAL.”

Finally after the long voyage, the tugs and E-House were delivered to their destinations in Brazil, Lagos/Nigeria and Rotterdam/the Netherlands.

Da Nang. The tugs had a weight of up to 500t and measured up to 28.6 x 14.4 x 15.8m. Two of the tugs were loaded in the cargo hold, whereas the other six were positioned on deck, leaving some space for the E-House. The latter was the last to be loaded in Batam/Indonesia and the first to be discharged in Rio Grande/Brazil. The E-House measured 22 x 28 x 23m and weighed 1263t – it is destined for an FPSO Unit.

Having the same eight Safety Values across SAL Heavy Lift is a powerful way to ensure a consistent culture of compliance. The SAL Safety Values focus on activities with the greatest potential for death and injury to people, and therefore compliance is mandatory for everyone whilst onboard our vessels.

The efforts being put into the SAL Safety Values are being made because we do not want people to be harmed. These values are about having high standards and complying with them. By briefing everyone the aim is to ensure 100% compliance. As a reminder for everyone we produced a little booklet with these Values, so that everyone can refresh their knowledge at any time.

Our Safety Values will help us take the necessary steps towards zero tolerance of incidents and safety breaches. We do not accept death or serious injury as inevitable consequences of working in our industry. The Safety Values are not a magic solution for every fatality or serious injury. But we believe they will help make an enormous improvement for

everyone who works for us.George Geddes, Marine Manager

HSSE, SAL Heavy Lift

SAL Safety ValuesRecent developments in SAL

Heavy Lift included the launch of the new SAL Safety Values as part of its mission statement “Safety First”. SAL Heavy Lift is committed to the prevention of all incidents which could result in serious injury or even death. Therefore we have implemented these eight Safety Values across the fleet.

Management and Finance is taken care of from the headquarters of “K” Line (Scandinavia) Holding A/S in Copenhagen.

The country offers a fantastic natural wonderland with spectacular views of fjords, mountains, islands, the northern lights and midnight sun. The coastline is more than 20,000 kms long ending at the Russian border. Being located in a northern Scandinavian country with lots of snow and mountains, ski enthusiasts have a nice playground. Norwegians are famous for their interest in winter sports, their cabins in the mountains and walking and climbing in the mountains in the

summer.The office in Norway is

part of “K” Line (Scandinavia) Holding A/S, which has offices in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The company is a joint venture between KKK in Tokyo and Scan-Group in Copenhagen,

and was established in its present structure on January 1st, 2006. Thus we are eagerly

looking forward to the 10 year anniversary coming up on January 1st, 2016.

Before the joint venture was established the “K” Line Agency and representation in Scandinavia had been taken care of by Scan-Group since 1974.

With a major focus on customer service and efficiency, the office has been through

positive developments in the past two years, and is well equipped to face the challenges that our industry will meet in the future.

Shipping has long been a mainstay of Norway’s export sector, but much of Norway’s economic growth has been fueled by an abundance of natural resources, including petroleum exploration and production, hydroelectric power, and fisheries.

Agriculture and traditional heavy manufacturing have suffered a relative decline compared to the service and oil-related industries, and the public sector is amongst the largest in the world as a percentage of the overall gross domestic product.

The country has a very high standard of living compared with other European countries, and a strongly integrated welfare system. Norway’s modern manufacturing and welfare system rely on a financial reserve produced by the exploitation of natural resources, particularly North Sea oil.Ulrik Jespersen, Managing Director, “K” Line (Scandinavia) Holding A/S

We held one such drill on Wednesday 25th March. We strive to make these drills realistic, and seek to involve a ship – and occasionally vessel

staff on leave. On this occasion, due to the requirements of our fleet’s world-wide trade, no ship was available to participate – so we had to use the well-known

M/T EXAMPLE – 100,000 tonnes of oceanic splendour. Additionally, we had to accept that – with some staff travelling – only those in the office would respond, although senior staff were kept informed by phone.

On this occasion, the EXAMPLE suffered a potentially catastrophic leak of water into the Engine Room. The shore Emergency Response Team [ERT] assembled, and were instrumental in the ship being

able to make repairs on board that saved her from a watery grave, whilst simultaneously informing charterers, owners, and other interested bodies.

Once the ship was safely on passage again, the ERT stood down, and held a review or ‘wash-up session’. This was done to identify any lessons that could be learnt. On this occasion some nine items were discussed and recorded – and will be monitored and reviewed!

Abby Marshall, Purchasing Officer,

“K” Line LNG Shipping (UK) Ltd.

“K” Line LNG Emergency Table Top DrillAs part of our commitment to

safety, including Emergency Preparedness, KLNG hold periodic drills. As well as contact drills, when out-of-office communications are tested; unannounced fire drills – checking office evacuation procedures run smoothly; and Emergency set-up drills; we have drills that simulate a shipboard emergency.

As you would imagine this was quite a complex task given the scope and diversity of each locations responsibility. Our initial authorisation was valid for three years, and in August 2014 we received the inevitable letter from UK customs arranging a reauthorisation audit. Much had changed during the previous three and a half years,

not least “K” Line London moving to their new offices in 200 Aldersgate which necessitated a complete review of the security procedures in place. As with our initial application, the customs officer in charge of our reauthorisation was very supportive, and helped guide us through the process. Finally on 4th March 2015, after much work, and two full day audits at the Ipswich office (the main site for our customs activities) we received confirmation of our reassessment of authorisation taking us through to November 2017. Thanks to all involved in both London and Ipswich offices.

Nick Cadge, “K” Line (Europe) Ltd., Ipswich

“K” Line Europe’s AEOF accreditation re-confirmed“K” Line (Europe) Ltd. originally obtained

AEOF (AEO Full) accreditation back in January 2011 covering both the London and Ipswich offices.

why was thE status of aEo INtroduCEd?

The introduction of AEO status is the EC’s response to the need to secure international supply chains and the introduction of Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) in the USA and the development of the Safe framework of standards in the World Customs Organisation (WCO).

The aim is to provide business with an internationally recognised quality mark which will indicate that their role in the international supply chain is secure and their customs controls and procedures are efficient and compliant. An operator with AEO security and safety status implies that apart from being reliable in the traditional financial and customs terms, they are also compliant in respect of security and safety standards and can therefore be considered as a ‘secure’ trader and thus a reliable trading partner.

Prior to that Colin worked in port agencies in London and Southampton as well as working for Bacardi, Martini. Colin entertained us with his memorable stories from “back in the day”. During his working career the

containership business evolved from general cargo ships with a few containers on deck to the ultra large containerships of today, all of which and more Colin took in his stride. Many of his “K” Line colleagues will have pleasant memories of working with Colin over the past few years, and we wish him a very happy commute-free retirement, watching the cruise ships sail by in his home town of Southampton.

Captain Ueyama returns to Japan

During the years he was here in London in the Car Carrier department, he contributed hugely and helped to bring the Transatlantic trades into a more profitable position.

His crowning achievement was probably winning the ‘nearest the pin’ trophy in the “K” Line Golf day last year. As is customary, a tankard was presented to him to commemorate his time in the UK. Thank you Kim-san for your hard work and friendship whilst in London and we wish you the very best for your future in Tokyo.

As you may know, the Car Carrier department in London moved to Hamburg at the end of January 2015 where Kim-san spent the last 2 months of his European stay. hErE arE a fEw words from thE hamBurg offICE:

On behalf of “K” Line Deutschland I would like to express our special thanks to Kim-san for his hard work, dedication, and goodwill despite being here for just 2 months. Kim-san dedicated himself to the education of the young staff here, and borderless works! I believe that he enjoyed curry wurst (sausage) at his favourite bar in front of the station, “Empire of Doner”. John Kitchener/Goro Kitamura-san

Kemball in 1973 all the tractor units were delivered painted in what he affectionately called Coca Cola red with the James Kemball lettering in contrasting white. This livery soon became James Kemballs’ distinctive trademark within the Felixstowe haulage community. Charles is seen (right) taking delivery of two Mercedes tractor units in 1991.

The end of an era for James Kemball

In 2004 the business was acquired by “K” Line Holding (Europe) Limited and we continued to take delivery of trucks in this colour until 2008 when the cost of painting them became prohibitive and all the tractor units delivered since then have been plain white with the now familiar red James Kemball sign writing. The transformation was completed in April this year when the last of the Coca Cola red vehicles,

pictured left, were driven out of the depot for the last time and replaced by ten white Renault T460.26 tractor units pictured below.
