Evaluation summary reports: positive examples

The proposal extents from physical climate change to impacts to macroeconomic implementation of damages and costs on economic sectors or individual corporations (establishing an interdisciplinary character to the proposal).

The approach is interdisciplinary since the description suggests explicit cooperation among economists, climate scientists and social scientists and integration of behavioral economics with macro level modeling and analysis.

In this respect the project’s concept to provide a comprehensive economic assessment that incorporates issues such as mitigation and adaptation; welfare, risk and equity; growth; side effects; and the design of policy instruments is novel and innovative with a clear interdisciplinary nature.

The combination of new model parts is interdisciplinary and involves natural scientists and researchers in the socio economic field.

Evaluation summary reports: negative examples

The contribution of the social sciences is relatively weak in the proposal.

Both natural sciences and social sciences are well represented in the project. However, the evaluators were not fully convinced that the proposed integrativeactivities are strong enough to tie those two components together.

The conception of socioeconomic/governance processes were unconvincing. Specifically, a focus on social psychology – attitudes, norms and values – and economic rationality – preferences of actors updated on the basis of informationflows -, and lack of attention to systemic, structural, historically embedded drivers ofsocioecological degradation (…) was found to be a particular weakness.

The proposal did not present a convincing case for strong scientific and social impact. To ensure impact, a greater focus on identifying relevant stakeholders and managers as well as their specific management and policy needs is necessary.
