House of CultureFall 2013Tony PattersonBased on an initial analysis of Franz Kline’s “New York,” this project explores the theme of continuity from a hand-drawn translation of the work to a three-dimensional iter-ation which receives its form from the parti drawing. This form becomes inhabited by the program of Ann Arbor’s new “House of Culture,” consisting of a painting gallery, a theater space, and a sculpture garden.

Ski ResortWinter 2014Jono SturtTwo week project exploring the shifting of volumes to create surfaces and inhabitable spaces. Interior spaces are designed to provide participants and spectators with both a sense of compression and expansion as they navigate throughout the structure.

Urban Skate ParkWinter 2014Jono SturtTwo week project focused on the breaking of traditional floor plates into ones which each have a single program, and the connection of these spaces using handicap-accessible ramps.

Habitat HotelWinter 2014Jono SturtThis project is an attempt to distance the inhabitant from the loud and overwhelming presence of industry that we are accustomed to experiencing on a daily basis. It provides a new experi-ence of human proximity to non-human species with minimal invasion on their natural habitats and innate behaviors. It attempts to reflect the characteristics of these species architecturally in a way that would not only facilitate a one-night stay in a room easily accessible from an AMTRAK train station, but also one that would highlight the natural environment which the train zooms past and completely neglects multiple times a day.

The design of each of the rooms is based on the natural habitat of each of the native animals on their respective sites. The Turtle Habitat is located in calm and shallow water, with an area for wildlife to bask in the sun at water level. The Bird Habitat is positioned in an open field and pro-vides a panoramic bird’s eye view of the site. The Butterfly Habitat finds itself set into the ground in the mesic forest area of the site, providing shade and protection from wind.

Garden DuplexWinter 2014Lars JunghansThe goal of this project was to explore the possibilities of sustainable design materials and methods, both active and passive, and to calculate quantitative results (water and energy costs) from the design decisions made. Kitchen and bathroom design was also explored, taking into account the flow of clean water and waste water. Drawings were created in collaboration with Ashley Chang and Ashley Howard.

Newton LibraryWinter 2015Joel SchmidtThe Newton Library is located in Surrey, British Columbia, and was designed by Patkau Architects. Due to the abundance of rainfall in the area, the inverted roof was designed with spouts at either end and rock cisterns to help guide precipitation to the groundwater. This inverted roof allows for light to flood deep into the library, while its southern facade is angled to help mitigate the harsher southern sun. Tectonically, the structure is laminated timber that rests on a concrete base, and a series of concrete columns creates a strong linear central axis that runs through the structure. Model created using SketchUp in a collaborative effort with Landon Carpenter, Rachel Miu, and Omari Tabor.
