New Apartments Spark ControversyWill Broadway Slowly morph?

Mixed feelings strike residents of Capitol Hill, as Broadway undergoes

construction to build new apartments for Foreign Exchange students. Broadways

residents express mixed feelings as their neighborhood undergoes a major construction

project to allocate more housing for SCCCs Foreign Exchange students.

Seattle Central Community College is in the process of building an apartment

complex to house Foreign Exchange Students from other countries who want to further

their education in the United States. (These dorms/apartments are)This addition to the

Broadway area is expected to be finished in 2010 and will house to home approximately

70 International students. Mixed views of the projects outcome swarm from Seattle

Centrals students. While some Seattle Central students are excited at the prospects of a

community college with a dormitory, while others fear for a total transformation of the

    Broadway area.

Everyday, 21-year-old Bora Kim, an exchange student from South Korea, has to

wakes up over an hour early so that she can catchtwo buses and get to her classes on

time to get to school. Bora describes her daily trek and how it consumes more than an

hour of her day each direction, consuming over an hour of her day to get to her class at

Seattle Central on time. I like Central and the area where it is located, but the commute?

Not so much. When asked for her opinions on the new housing complex for

international students she responds, I like the idea of having apartments right across the

street for exchange students, it could save a lot of time and effort.

Seattle Central has approximately ten thousand students and out of those ten

thousand, there are one thousand Foreign Exchange students. Of the approximate ten

thousand students Seattle Central enrolls, about one thousand of them are international

students. This These new housing units will provide international students with the

comfort luxury of having a safe place to stay and the luxury of a hassle-free commute.

without the hassle of commuting to and from Seattle Central.

Twenty four24-year-old Michelle Swanson who has lived on Capitol Hill forthe

majority of her life andlooks at the housing project positively, stating how shebelieves

that Having these apartments built will probably help make business owners make more

money. she said Michelle continues with enthusiasm, Its cool that people from other

countries want to come to Seattle to learn.

However, not everyone feels as optimistically towards the idea of a new

apartment complex. Not everyone is as enthusiastic towards the idea of the Apartment

complex. Some people, such as Akina Hansen, student of Seattle Central a Seattle Central

student and a long time resident of West Seattle, disagree on opposes the housing project.

It is unfair to all the other students who arent International Students. She argues says.

They should at least be available to everyone who can afford them. I know that

sometimes international students have to commute from far away, but so do I. Peeved

with the situation, Akina continues, The school is already crowded as it is. Every time I

try to use a public student facility, like the library, computer lab, or even [if I just want to

sit] in the Atrium, I cant because there are so many international students hogging the

space. Dont you think having apartments built across the street will definitely increase

that? (hahaha did she really say that?)

Akina isnt the only one who feels it is unfair that only international students can

live in the apartments. Jeff Riser, too, admits I like the fact that Seattle Central is putting

money into building housing for students, but its pretty fucked up that rooms are only

available to International students. Jeff concludes with uncertainty towards the new

housing, I feel it is a possibility that having these apartments built will change the scene

    of Broadway.

It seems that equality of treatment isnt the only issue that is surrounding this

project, Jeff Riser, a student of Seattle Central and long time resident of the Capitol Hill

area feels somewhat iffy about this whole situation.

I feel it is a possibility that having these apartments built will change the scene

    of Broadway. He says.

I like the fact that Seattle Central is putting money into building housing for students,

but its pretty fucked up that rooms are only available to International students.

While the building of these new living facilities has aroused much controversy

over equality and fear for the potential change, no one can be sure the effects of the

buildings until their completion. In the mean time, all we can do is wait and see.

Although there is a lot of controversy that has to do with these new apartments,

Seattle Central will be one of the lucky few community colleges to have dorms. Nobody

can know for a fact, how having international students directly across the street will

transform Broadway. All we can do is wait for the completion of the project and see.
