Friedrich der Große (1712–1786)
Frederick the Great (1712–1786)
seit 250 Jahren.
… when the king signed the purchase agreement. On 19 September 1763, his
passion for white gold turned Frederick II of Prussia into an entrepreneur
and marked the birth of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. Out of
love for the precious material, the king became his own manufactory’s best
customer. He ordered no less than 21 dinner services for the royal palaces
and cleverly used the highly coveted porcelain as a diplomatic gift. His ambi-
tious orders inspired the manufactory’s craftsmen to create works of unique
beauty and the utmost perfection. Uncompromising quality standards and
a passion for exquisite porcelain have remained. Both have been linking the
manufactory with its royal founder for 250 years.

21. Jahrhundert nicht ausschließen.
The vibrant city of Berlin has always been home to KPM. After more than a
century spent near Potsdamer Platz, the manufactory fi nally became acces-
sible by boat in 1871 after moving to its current location near the Tiergarten,
close to the River Spree. Today, the listed KPM QUARTIER is one of the
most signifi cant commercial buildings in the history of the city. It is a very
vivid memorial. All stages of royal porcelain production take place here –
from preparing the paste to painting the handmade pieces of porcelain. Seven
kings and emperors possessed the manufactory before it became a public en-
terprise. Owned by a Berlin banking family since 2006, the successful devel-
opment of KPM proves that preserving a cultural treasure and maintaining
a commercially viable approach thinking are not mutually exclusive in the
21st century.

herausfordern. Ein solches Objekt ist die PRINZESSINNENGRUPPE von
Johann Gottfried Schadow. Die 1795 aus Anlass einer königlichen Doppel-
hochzeit geschaffene Figurengruppe besteht – was keiner sieht – aus 88 Einzel-
Afi cionados appreciate the remarkable strength and bright whiteness of the
KPM porcelain. The arcanum – the secret formula for manufacturing perfect
porcelain – is passed from generation to generation. Manufactory creations
are made from an ever-growing collection of more than 150,000 moulds,
including numerous highly complex artist’s designs that constantly challenge
the skills of the craftsmen. One such creation is PRINCESSES TOGETHER
by Johann Gottfried Schadow. The 88 pieces, which make up the group of
fi gurines created in 1795 to mark a double royal wedding, are seamlessly
joined together whilst moist in just three days. Only master craftsmen can
create perfect masterpieces of lasting value.

In der Königlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin werden alle Dekore von Hand
gemalt.
All decorations in the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin are hand-painted.
This applies as much to the gold ornamention on the ANTIQUE SUGAR
BASKET as to the unique variety of motifs and graphic decorations. Based
on a design from 1810, the sugar basket will eventually be given a coloured
insert, whose background will also be applied by hand. The porcelain paint-
ers are able to freely interpret the motifs within the design specifi cations. This
artistic freedom is what makes each masterpiece so unique and explains why
the painters sign the porcelain they have decorated. Each painting thus be-
comes a unique work of art, whose authenticity is verifi ed by the orb-shaped
stamp.

JEDERZEIT STILBILDENDSTYLE THROUGH THE AGES
KPM thrives on the dynamism of Berlin. As part of the city’s cultural life, it
has created porcelain designs throughout the ages that have been far ahead of
their time. The balanced proportions of the Rococo-style services from the
early days continue to impress even today. Created around 1790, KURLAND
remains one of the manufactory’s most popular services, following the clear
lines of Classicism. Just like the SCHINKEL BASKET, for which around
3,000 precise cuts were made to create the fi ligree perforated rim. From 1930,
the spirit of Bauhaus permeated the manufactory, creating the perfect sym-
biosis between form and function in designs such as URBINO. New ground
is now being broken with the iF Design Award-winning BERLIN service by
Enzo Mari and collaborations with premium brands such as fashion house
Bottega Veneta and Bugatti Automobiles.

KPM has collaborated with major artists and designers throughout its his-
tory. Since the very beginning, its goal has been to incorporate new develop-
ments and trends into its range. By the same token, the fascinating material
of porcelain gives artists new avenues of expression for their ideas. Trude
Petri’s timelessly beautiful service URBINO and Marguerite Friedlaender’s
HALLE vase, which are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of
Modern Art, prove that design can be a work of art.

Berlin.
Anyone invited to a state banquet with the German Federal President will
notice that an eagle’s crest in gold adorns the edge of the plate. On turning
it over, the blue sceptre reveals its origin: KPM Berlin. In Schloss Bellevue,
ROCAILLE crowns the prestigious table. It was the same in the courtyard of
Frederick the Great, when the service created for Wrocław Palace was used
for royal soirées. The elegance of the design has not only stood the test of
time, but also the change in governance. 21st century decoration sees fl oral
compositions and blue mosaics being replaced by a 24-carat burnished gold
rim – and the Presidential Eagle.

Handwerkskunst „made in Germany“.
German embassies all over the world use the services of KPM for entertain-
ing guests. This white gold calling card represents both stylish tableware and
the fi nest German craftsmanship. Serving diplomacy, it follows a tradition
that dates back to the 18th century. Frederick the Great used his manufac-
tory’s porcelain, which was very much in demand throughout Europe, as
an effective means of diplomacy. For Catherine the Great, KPM created a
precious 120-piece dessert service with a magnifi cent centrepiece featuring
a porcelain fi gurine of the Russian Empress herself enthroned in the middle.
The gift was such a huge success that it strengthened long-term relations
between the two states.

For the yacht of an American businessman, an exclusive ARKADIA dinner
service was created with biscuit porcelain relief medallions featuring octopus
motifs. KPM collaborated with shipbuilders and interior designers to create
bespoke royal porcelain components and applications based on maritime
motifs. Their immaculate white surface adds a touch of sophistication to an
exclusive ambience. Bespoke designs to suit the individual needs of discern-

Sport „Wei Long“.
A dancing elephant sparked the collaboration between KPM and Bugatti. The famous art deco radiator mascot, designed by Rembrandt Bugatti, now sym-bolises the fastest porcelain in the world: royal porcelain applications and interior details characterised by their technical perfection and unmatched craftsmanship. Cobalt blue lines accentuate the pure, streamlined design of the 2011 Edition Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport “L’Or Blanc”, which led to a winning sequel in 2012 in the form of the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport “Wei Long”. In the Year of the Dragon – “long” in Chinese – the porcelain symbol of luck turns the automobile into an objet d’art.
