In golf, we have seen a generation of female golfers, from Sorenstam to Ochoa, promoting and popularizing the sport with their success and victories on the course. In this issue, we talk to 3 avid female golfers, Suriyana Idenburg,

Linda Foo and Mariam Bte Jaafar, from Laguna about how they feel about the Club, the Sport, and everything under the sun, and what they feel the Club can do to promote female golf.

little background about our ladies of golfSuriyana Idenburg, beloved wife of Suntec Singapore’s Chief Operations Officer, has been coming to the Club since 2006. Calling Laguna her second home, she enjoys the wide range of facilities and services available at the Club, especially having a few games on the Master Course.

Linda Foo, Director of Fire Engineering Enterprises Pte Ltd, has been a happy Member of the Club since 2005, and chooses Laguna as her preferred place to spend time with her friends and family. Apart from golfing at Laguna, she likes to travel to different parts of the world as well to try out the different golf courses.

Mariam Bte Jaafar, a housewife, has been coming to the Club for 9 years now. She loves using the facilities at the Club, like the swimming pool and enjoys teeing off with her friends on a nice weekday afternoon. The one thing she loves most about the Club is the fact that she does not have to endure a long commute to get here, as she lives just a stone throw away!

How the fab three got togetherBack during the day, the Club use to organize Ladies’ Games on Wednesdays. It was in one of those games when the Laguna golf guides, noticing that both Suriyana and Marian had similar interests, introduced them to each other. Eventually they met Linda and two became three. In time, the three, together with a few more other like minded Ladies came together and formed the Ladies cohort of the Club.

When sharing about how they met, all three ladies exclaimed their wish that the Club would “BRING BACK THE WEDNESDAY LADIES GAME!”

We know you ladies travel frequently to other golf courses around the world, so besides laguna, which other golf clubs would you recommend to our readers. All ladies shared that Legends in Dubai and Nirwana in Bali are some of their favorite Clubs outside Singapore. Suriyana also stated that she was feels that a good golf club should be one that constantly improve itself, further adding that it was good that Laguna renovated the World Classic course, although all three felt that the World Classic could be too demanding.

Why is laguna their chosen one?According to the Ladies, nothing is more important in a Club than the service level of its staff. And the most prominent reason why these Ladies have stayed with the Club for these long is due to the very essence of the Club; Serve with Passion and Sincerity.

They specially commended the staff at the Customer Service counter and at the Women’s changing room for serving with excellence. Special mentions were also given to the staff at the Golf department, especially the golf guides and buggy maintenance personnel, and last but not least, the hardworking people who maintain the 2 golf courses, led by Laguna’s Bradley Leahey

Training & Development Is The Key To Any Success

The past five (5) months here at Laguna National Golf & Country Club has been an exciting chapter for the team of staff working at the golf course maintenance / T2 Department.

Training & development is the key to any successful company. In saying this, I would like to inform & update all of our Members here at Laguna National Golf & Country Club that we are striving to be the best in our golf course maintenance industry here in Singapore & also throughout S.E Asia.

To do this, we have implemented in-house weekly training seminars for our team supervisors & their assistant’s where

we conducted educational seminars together with hands on experience training modules.

We have also had a number of professor’s from chemical & fertilizer manufacturing companies such as Syngenta, Toro & Rainbird, together with turf machinery & irrigation companies, coming to our workshop where they have also provided educational talks / seminars.

In the past 2 months, we have also had a Member from the golfing department, Ms. Lynn Chia (Senior Golf Executive) attend the second group training course. This will assist Ms. Lynn to develop to the next level in her career to understand course maintenance.

Training is always ongoing & during the week of the Singapore Barclay’s Open, that was hosted at Sentosa Golf Club in November, 2011, I had taken 4 senior supervisors to assist with the tournament preparation & daily set up of this world class event. This was a very busy 7 days, that included golf course tournament maintenance work which was instructed

and governed via the European Tour together with another 30 international golf course superintendents throughout the world where they had also volunteered for this event.

This was great hands on experience for our team here at Laguna National Golf & Country Club offering support from setting up tee-box locations, preparations of greens for daily play together with preparing & raking bunkers to a professional tournament standard.

I was very pleased with our team’s performance & most of all the quality of work that they all had conducted during this busy week. We did hold the flag very high for Laguna National and a lot of comments were made from the other team members from the European Tour & also the Head of Agronomy from Sentosa Golf Club.

Also during the tournament week, the Sentosa Golf Club had rewarded the volunteers for their hard work & effort via inviting top world-class speakers to deliver educational seminars that ran during the 5 days of the tournament. It was a great opportunity to attend talks with such great speakers that do not come to Asia that often to conduct such seminars for the turf industry. These seminars points are approved & credited from the American Golf Course Superintendent Association (AGCSA) which is noticed world wide in our turf industry.

A special thank you to those who devoted the week to us and helped us provide the best possible tournament conditions. We had a great week with many players praising our golf course. We recognize that this was a team effort and was accomplished by all who contributed.”

In conclusion to this update, we will continue to strive to improve our golf course conditions on both of our beautiful golf courses here at Laguna National.

Many of us declare ourselves as social golfers. But deep down inside we want to improve our game and play solid rounds. We say our wagers with our golf buddies are really social and contribute to drinks after but we all hate to lose.

Golf is a unique sport in that even masters like Tiger Woods use coaches and undergo swing changes to improve their games. In addition we hear about how the likes of Vijay Singh is one of the most

hardworking touring pros who practices day in and day out. And this is on top of their hectic four day tournaments plus another day of pro-am virtually every week.

Yet why do so many of us not bother to practice on the driving range nor seek out a teaching pro to correct our swings and improve our games? And do that on a regular practice to avoid perpetuating our mistakes on the golf course?

Laguna National today has arguably the most number of teaching pros in a golf club. In addition to quantity we also have some of Singapore’s top golf teachers such as Chang Ren Kiat, Kevin Lee and Dino Kwek. A few months ago, we added Andrew Welsford to the list. Andrew is a pro to the pro and his charges includes Lam Chi Bing. Andrew has since also assumed the role of Head Professional to cover the leadership of the golf department.

Andrew is the process of redefining our golf academy at the driving range, as well as created new and more effective curriculum for our Youth Golf Programme. He will also be designing interesting programmes for us golfers to improve various aspects of our game and in particular areas which are needed for our two special golf courses.

A call out to all our members; if you or your children are not golfing yet, this is an excellent opportunity to get started. If you are a golfer and whether you are a inconsistent 24 Handicap Index player, a consistent 12 or a solid 7, look out for the opportunities to further your game.

Speaking of juniors, we want to first encourage parents to introduce the game to your children. We are also reenergizing our Club’s own junior programme to breed our own champions. With such teaching talents at our academy, 14 years of experience with handling about 300 students from our YGP and producing national players such as Johnson Poh and Kok Jo Ee and two fabulous championship courses, it is only natural for us to raise the standard of our golf.

Jeffry Ho from our Golf Committee heads up this junior golf initiative and has already started to form a network of promising junior golfers. Do track him down or Andrew Welsford or any his fellow teaching pros if you are interested.

It’s time to get serious. It is more fun to play well not to mention start collecting on the wagers!

Laguna is proud of their 2 Touring Golf Professionals who have secured their Asian Tour Card for the year 2012.

Scott Barr finished strong in the last quarter of the season - placing 26th in the Asian Tour Order of Merit with US$161,943.53

In 19 Asian Tour events for 2011, his best finished was at the UBS Hong Kong Open where he secured 17th place, his biggest pay check for the year, however was made in the Barclays Singapore Open where he finished tied for 23rd with a pay check of $ 57,900. Despite struggling in the first half of the year, Scott has regain his old form since becoming a father in the mid of the year. He had made 15 halfway cuts out of 19 events. This year was special for Scott as he is the first based foreign golfer living in Singapore to play in the US Open .His statistical records includes: ranked 5th in driving distance - 294 yards, ranked 9th in total birdies with 188 and 16th on fairway hits with a 66% driving accuracy.

Zaw Moe on the other hand has showed his old form in the middle of the year that made him a household name in the Japan Tour in the 90’s.

He placed 40th in the Asian Tour Order of Merit with US$ 93,008. His best finish this year were back to back top 10 finishes in the Macau Open where he finished Tied 4th and Yeangder Tournament Players in Taiwan were he finished 8th. Zaw completed 16 events and made 10 half way cuts. Zaw Moe also played in the Asian Development Tour this year and ranked 22nd in the order of merit.

Zaw Moe won The SPGA Presidents Cup via play-off at the Warren Golf Club on 20 - 22 September.

Both Zaw Moe and Scott Barr finished tied 2nd in the SPGA Testimonial Golf Tournament held atWarren Golf Club on 21 - 23 November.

Zaw Moe won the SPGA Hiro Food Classics on 14th to 16 March and Scott Barr finished 1 strokebehind as R-up.

As the Director of Agronomy, it is my responsibility to provide the Members with smooth, true-free putting surfaces on both of our courses.

With this and in order to do this professionally, I really do require the support of the Member’s and their guest’s.

Only if everyone would repair their own ball mark plus one other correctly, ball marks would be a thing of the past. Could you imagine putting on a ball mark-free green? Wouldn’t that be nice!

The average number of rounds of golf on a typical golf course in our area can exceed 40,000 rounds. This equates to a potential of 40,000 ball marks on any given green during the course of a golfing season. Then multiply that by 18 x greens and you have the potential for 720,000 ball marks.

Most of which are completely avoidable if they are repaired properly and straight away.

Please kindly assist to do your part and use the information provided below to help our club provide an enjoyable round of golf for other member’s & their guest’s.

PraCtiCE - BY KEvin lEE / tEaCHing golF professionalWhat I really mean is effective practice. If you practice the wrong way, you are just perfecting your bad habits. quality practice is focused and goal orientated.

Listed below are some pointers to help you during practice.

Hitting balls is exercise, playing to a target is practice. Make sure you practice to a target. Aim is crucial in getting results, so focus your attention on a small target as possible.

sloppy practice produces sloppy play on the course. Practice with the same intent and concentration you would have during play.

Spend some time during practice preparing for each shot as you would on the course.

Develop and practice a pre-shot routine that you would use before every shot on the course.

Create realistic situations during practice.Around the greens, don’t always place the balls in perfect lies. Instead, throw the balls and practice as it lies. Simulate as many situations as possible (ie over a bunker, downhill, from the rough etc.)

Set goals and make it competitive (eg. six out of ten 50m pitch shots to within 12ft or six out of ten drives between two posts. have a competition with friends to nearest the hole or least strokes up and down etc.)

Remember, banging hundreds of golf balls is a good workout. Effective practice transfers what you have practiced into success on the golf course!

The Chinese Lunar New Year is the grandest festival for all Chinese around the world. The Chinese New Year or “Nian” has many myths and lengends tied to it, but one of the most interesting one would be

the origination of the term “Nian”.

THE LEGEND OF “NIAN”

Legend has it that in ancient China, there lived, Nian, a ferocious and ugly beast, which look like a cross between a dragon and unicorn, terrorizing the Chinese on the first and 15th day

of every lunar month. People were terrified of this mystical creature and would locked their doors early before sunset on the days of its attack.

In one of the villages Nian attacks, there lived an old wise sage. He thought it was the fear in people that made the monster so bold and furious. Thus the old man rallied the villagers against the monster in one occasion, bringing with them beating drums and gongs, burning sticks and fire crackers , with the aim of scaring the beast away.

As predicted, Nian appeared on a cold freezing night, and attacked the village. However, unlike previous attacks, the villagers, under the wisdom of the old sage, were prepared for the monster’s attack. Upon seeing the beast, the villagers light up their torches, fire crackers and

hit their drums and gongs, pushing the monster back with their bright light and loud noise. When the monster tried to escape to a different area, the villagers would follow. Eventually, the monster was exhausted from all the running and fell to the ground with exhaustion. Having subdued the legendary beast, the villagers were overjoyed and made even louder noise, only this time, in celebration.

News of the victory spread across China and since then, people have kept the tradition by beating drums and gongs, and lighting fireworks at the 1st and 15th day of the lunar month to drive the imagined monsters and bad luck away and to celebrate the victory over it. Today, Nian refers to the New Year’s day or the Spring Festival. People often say Guo Nian, which means ‘live the festival.’ Furthermore, Nian also means the year. For an example, the Chinese often greet each other by saying Xin Nian Hao, which means Happy New Year! Xin means new and Hao means good.

Ernie Els, an old friend of the Club’s Chairman and our Managing Director, Patrick Bowers dropped by for an impromptu visit, toured the World Classic and had dinner at Enmaru Izakaya recently. Ernie really wanted to see the World Classic, as he had heard a great deal about it and is spending a lot of time in the region promoting his critically acclaimed golf course design business. They also spent some time touring the Masters Course, one of Ernie’s old favourites in Singapore. Laguna Members and their family gathered on 26 November 2011 a for the annual Christmas Tree Light

Up. This fun filled event was filled with magic shows, puppets, cookies, and a special visit from a man full of jolly.

It was truly a happy day for the Members and their families, especially for all the little children, who enjoyed all the fringe activities like making your own Christmas Trees, and the free flow of cookies and other holiday treats. The magic puppet shows brought even more fun and laughter to the event.

Everything went crazier when the Members got a special visit from the most important man in Christmas, Santa Claus himself, accompanied by one of his lovely Santarina. Riding in true blue Laguna style, the Father of Christmas came in a Golf Buggy and brought with him presents for all the boys and girls who have been nice. After a long photo taking session with Santa, everyone was treated to a lovely choir performance, serenading all with classic Christmas Carols like Silent Night.

The moment everyone have been waiting for finally arrive when Members and staff gathered around the big Christmas tree for its light up, and in a blink of an eye, every little trinkets and ornaments light up the Club, leaving everyone in anticipation of the coming festival.

MIZUNO - LAGUNA JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP 2011The Mizuno, Laguna Junior Golf Championship

2011, the first junior event sponsored by Mizuno in collaboration with Laguna National Golf & Country Club, was held on 12 and 13 of December 2011,

at the Masters Course. It was a huge field comprising of 105 juniors between the age of 12 to 18 years old.

Thomas Tan emerged victorious with a flawless 2 day round total of 142 (72,70) -2 under to win the Overall Boys Best Gross. Melvin Chew took the honors for the best Gross for the A Division with a 2 day total of 146 (75,71) + 2 over, while Yash Majmudar won the best Gross for B Division with a 2 day total of 148 (74,74) + 4 over.

As for the Girl’s Division Rachel Lim fought back strong on the 2nd day to improve her 2 day round total of 156 (81,75) + 12 over to claim Overall Best Gross for the Girls Division, Elizabeth Ang secured the Best Gross A division with a 2 day total of 158 (78,80) + 14 over, while Chloe Wong won the Best Gross B Division with a 2 day total of 158 (80,78) +14 over.

The event concluded with a lunch & prize presentation at the Eagle Ballroom. Prizes were given away by Mizuno Golf Corporation’s Chief of Staff, Golf Business Section, Ms. Emi Shinohara and Laguna National’s Head of Golf Professional, Mr. Andrew Welsford.

A gala event in Laguna’s golf calendar, the President’s Cup is one event where the sole purpose of it is to thank

the Members for their year’s support. No expense was spared in this year’s tournament, from the logistic set up to the evening dinner, as under the vision of Mr Peter Kwee, the Club set off to raise the bar for this year’s year end extravaganza.

The day kickstarted with a golf tournament in the afternoon. Though the weather was wet, no amount of rain could dampen the spirit of the Members

on the World Classic, knowing that awesome hole-in-one prizes were at stake. Many Members hid out at the Halfway House during the downpour, only to be greeted and surprised with free snacks and beverages from the Club.

After the golf game, everyone was treated to a night of good food, good programmes and all in all a delightful time as they enjoyed a hearty spread in the buffet dinner, and a dynamic Latin dance performance. The highlight of the night was indisputably the Grand Lucky Draw. With complimentary 1 year

subscription up for grabs, the club knew they could not just award the prize out conventionally. Awe and exclamation filled the ballroom when the Club announced that the way to determine the winners of the top 2 prizes was through a putting contest. 5 Members took the challenge on the Vineyard putting area and in the dust settled; Mr Matthew Sturgess and Mr Chong Sek Sin emerged as victors, winning a Tiger Woods autographed golf flag and the grand prize of a complimentary of 1 year subscription respectively.

Laguna Gave Back in the Presidents Cup 2011On 17 December 2011, Laguna National Golf and Country Club’s Chairman and Owner, Mr Peter Kwee, hosted the President’s Cup 2011. The prestigious club-organized golf event saw 80 plus Members took to the World Classic on a wet Saturday, with Hole-in-one prizes like Business Class air tickets and luxurious automobile. The day did not just ended with the game, as Members were treated to a sumptuous dinner buffet spread in the evening. The day was capped with a fantastic lucky draw, where Members stood a chance to win the grand prize of a complimentary 1 year subscription.

3! 2! 1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Members and Club band together to usher in the New Year on 31 December 2011 in a night of Glitz and Glamour. Everyone dressed up to the nines, with their wine glass in hand toasting to a great year of success at the Laguna’s year end soiree.

It was truly a glamorous night as Members and loved ones came together to sent off the last day of the year. The event kickstarted with a dinner buffet spread worthy of the night’s glamorous theme, with fresh seafood, Shepherd’s

pie, and a constant flow of champagne and fine wine.

Members were also treated to a lineup of classy performances with veteran crooner Robert Fernandez serenading the guests with hits from Frank Sinatra and a special showcase from the late King of Pop, “Michael Jackson”.

Amidst the fine dining and spectacular entertainment, there was also the fantastic lucky draw with prizes like fancy dining vouchers, a romantic get-a-way, free golf flights and the grand prize of a complimentary 1 year subscription up for grabs. And all these were not even the highlights of the night.

The celebrations reach a high when we laid the dance floor and Members and even a few friendly staff of Laguna, boogied their way to a groovy 2012!

The Durian Lovers of Laguna National Golf and Country Club had their dreams fulfilled on 3 December 2011, with Durian Fiesta. Held at the

beautiful Vineyard Terrace, 60 over Members gathered under a warm starry night to enjoy the “King of Kings” among all fruits, Mountain Cat King Durians.

The night’s highlight was of course durians, but not just any durians. Keeping in line with Laguna’s culture of providing only the best for the Members, the Club brought in arguably the highest class of Mountain Cat Kings Durians, in harvest for only 2 weeks in a year.

Complimenting the tasty fruit was a lineup of “mouth-watering’ events. From the Durian Eating Contest, which saw young ones proving their matte; achieving a winning record of 5 durians in 1 minute, to Guess the Durian’s Weight; where Members get to test just how well they know their durian, Members and even the staff had a heaty and hearty time.

Besides durians, the Club also catered mangosteens and coconut juice, for the rare few who are not fans of the “King”. Having these other fruits were handy as seen by Laguna’s Head Professional, Andrew Welsford, who despite his fear of the rich durian taste, tried it anyway.

Overall, the night was a fiesta, leaving many Members looking forward to the next encounter with the “King”.
