Change is norm. Bangkok is transforming. The adaptation of the city in confronting socioeconomic and environmental challenges is inevitable. Massive reinvestments in infrastructure are opportunities for landscape architects to redefine design framework and degree of intervention in offering essential urban services from water resources, waste cycling, energy generation, food cultivation, and mass mobility. On the upper Gulf of Thailand, six provinces of Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR) including Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pthum Thani, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Prakan cover 7,650 square kilometers of the Chao Phraya Estuary. After the founding in 1783, the city was transformed over 200 years by socioeconomics and consumerist influences, which contributed to rapid urbaniza-tion and infrastructure development. In early period, the construction of extensive waterworks was influenced by global demands of agricultural products. Massive irrigation projects were to supply suffi-cient water and control excessive rainfall. After the collapse of the world market for agricultural product between 1980 and 1986, the monetary and trade reforms engaged foreign investment and export manufacturing. Since then, Thai’s economics had fully shifted toward industrialization, which contributed to the construction of land-based infrastructure. In a present day, increasing population and urban-ization contributes to 8,700 ton of solid waste and 2.4 million m³ of wastewater daily. Transportation system accommodates over 6.7 million vehicles a day. Energy network serves electric consumption of 29,200 GWh yearly. Annually, Bangkok releases 42.65 million ton of Carbon Dioxide, while the absorbent capacity of green space is merely 100,000 ton (0.2%). Bangkok is operated by complex network of infrastructure and biophysical landscape in facilitating socioeconomic and ecological transactions. They function synergistically to produce and distribute a continuous flow of essential goods and services. Examining in historical and geographical time scales, these infrastructures are fragile and ephemeral. Confronting environmental shifts, maintenance is required, and the relationship between infra-structures and changing ecosystems must be reemphasized and recalibrated. In adapting to climate change, Sintunawa states that “the implementation of early adaptation strategies with regard to Bang-kok’s infrastructure would ultimately decrease the risk of asset damage and the risk of failure that would represent an economic and social cost to the city in the future” (67). If landscape architecture is to concern itself with the ecological crisis, what do landscape architects offer?

Even where soil and groundwater at a brownfield site are not contaminat-ed, deteriorating buildings and surface

debris on these sites may still pose health and safety risks, and have a negative impact on property values and on a neighbourhood’s image.
