EAST LANSING — TheMSU Museum’s GreatLakes Folk Festival marksa milestone 10 years thissummer on Aug. 12-14 indowntown East Lansing.

Four new performershave been inked in, bring-ing blues, Hawaiian, polkaand reggae rhythms to thegrowing lineup.

Over the years, the festi-val has brought an eclecticand amazing array of musi-cal artists to the event —nearly 150 musicians andgroups, in fact — and thisyear’s event will be ahomecoming of “festivalfavorites” that reflect thebest of the best in music, dance, arts and culturefrom across America andaround the world.

The music and danceprogram featuresperformances ranging fromsacred steel to klezmer,Cajun to Celtic and morediverse cultural expres-sions and traditions.

Musical artists performtwo to four times through-out the weekend, so visi-tors have a chance to seethe bands they like and dis-cover new genres.

The award-winning folkfestival, produced by theMSU Museum’s MichiganTraditional Arts Program, follows a successful three-year run hosting the travel-ing National Folk Festival,1999-2001.

The MSU Museum beganproducing folk festival in2002 to continue the cel-ebration of culture, tradi-tion and community, andwas named the state’s toppublic humanities programby the Michigan Humani-ties Council.

A community sing andmusician jam were addedto the mix last year, with arousing response and plansto expand on them for2011.

“Festival-goers appreci-ate the rich and authenticexperience and often notehow the event promotes agreater understanding ofdiverse cultures, how itbrings people together, andhow it strengthens com-munity in the way theprograms resonate andendure,” observes MarshaMacDowell, founding direc-tor and MSU Museum cura-tor of folk arts.

Difficult choices“There have been so

many wonderful musiciansat this event, so choosingthis year’s slate was a tallorder indeed,” explainsMacDowell, also a profes-sor of art and art history atMSU.

The MSU Museumsought recommendationsfrom its advisory commit-tee and encouraged sugges-tions from the community.

At the same time, otherrealities entered the pic-ture: Conflicting touringschedules, some popularacts have dissolved and/orreformed in differentcombos, and the passing ofsome musicians.

The festival celebratesthe cultural traditions ofcommunities across Amer-

ica and the world. The MSUMuseum works year-roundto develop this festivalprogram that reflects theimmense variety and vital-ity of art, skill, knowledge, and wisdom of our culturalheritage for the public.

It offers a one-of-a-kindmix of music and dancestages, demonstrations oftraditional arts and sto-rytelling, authentic ethnicfood, an arts marketplace, craft artists, and many spe-cial activities for kids andtheir companions.

Beyond the music:Grassroots Green — tra-

Children’s activitiesinclude making crafts fromrecycled materials, plant-ing vegetables, creatinggarden ornaments, buildingforts, hang out laundry andcomposting with worms!

Smoke was billowing from thewindows of a burning houseearly May 26 when Lansing

police Officer Nate Osborn arrived.A family with two young boys —

ages 1 and 2 — weretrapped on the roof.

Firefighters wereon the way to the two-story house at 500 S.Pennsylvania Ave., butOsborn, an eight-yearveteran, decided not towait.

He climbed on afront porch railing and, surroundedby smoke, reached up to the roof, and the boys’ father handed themto Osborn. Three other officersassisted, he said in an interview.

By the time the children were offthe roof, firefighters had arrived andused a ladder to rescue the man andhis wife.

“It’s the job,” Osborn said. “It’swhat we’re paid to do. It’s what anyone of us would do in that situation.”

The father, a 29-year-old Lansingman, suffered severe, but not life-threatening, burns in the fire, whichwas reported at about 2:20 a.m. Hewas taken to Sparrow Hospital andlater airlifted to the burn unit at Uni-versity of Michigan Hospital, offi-cials said. The boys and the man’swife were not injured.

Officials have called the fire, which is believed to have begun inthe attached garage, suspicious, butgave no details. It remains underinvestigation. The house was built in1910, according to property records.

Some neighbors said they heardan explosion.

“I turned and looked and thesky lit up for a split second,” said40-year-old Robert Baughman, whoat the time was west of the house, onHickory Street.

A spokesman for ConsumersEnergy said gas crews were notcalled to the scene.

The fire filled the surroundingarea with thick, black smoke.

Bruce Lozell, 63, who lives afew houses away on Pennsylvania

Avenue, said his son ran toward thehome to see what was happening, butthe smoke overwhelmed him and “hecouldn’t breathe.”

Four Lansing fire engines and twoladder trucks responded to the blaze.A total of 22 firefighters went to thescene.

Lansing fire Public InformationOfficer Steve Mazurek said the largeresponse was crucial to saving lives.

“The amount of manpower we hadon the scene,” he said, “enabled usto make some rescues in a situationthat potentially could have been verybad.”

On May 26, most of the home’swindows had been boarded up.

The entire garage entrance wascovered by a single, large board. Theblackened remains of the actual doorlay in some grass near the smalldriveway.

The American Red Cross Mid-Michigan chapter said the womanand two boys are staying with rela-tives.

Staff writer Alisha Greencontributed to this report.

Timely Tipsfor Hiring Remodelers

Red Flags For Identifying the Unprofessional Remodeler

Doesn’t have a license or insurance. All remodelers should be able to demonstrate evidence of both.

Doesn’t write contracts. Without a clear written plan, it’s difficult to know what work you are both agreeing to complete.Expectations should be agreed to in writing.

Requires payment in full prior to starting the job. It’s reasonable for your contractor to ask for payment up front topurchase materials for your job. Shady contractors demand full payment and may leave with the money.

Vastly underbids other contractors. If a bid is way lower than everyone else’s it may indicate inexperience or a methodof cutting costs that severely affects quality.

Cannot provide references. Professional remodelers will always be able to provide the names and phone numbers of pastcustomers.

How to Evaluate A Home Remodeler’s References

Before you sign a contract with a home remodeler, ask them to share with you the names and phone numbers of customers theyhave worked with in the past. Here are several questions to ask the previous customers:

15Wallacereview won’t include category for unsatisfactory

Superintendent T.C. Wallace Jr. willget his performance evaluation June27 — and there won’t be an “unsatis-factory” category on the form.

That’s the word fromthe Lansing School Dis-trict’s board personnelcommittee, which hasfinished a review of theevaluation process.

“We have decidednot to add a new cat-egory,” said CharlesFord, board vice presi-dent and leader of the board’s person-nel committee. “We’ve never had an‘unsatisfactory’ category on a super-intendent’s evaluation.”

Board member Myra Ford, also onthe personnel committee, said mostemployee groups in the district —with the exception of those in the

union representing principals — havean “unsatisfactory” category on theirevaluations.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to haveit on theirs and not have it on the super-intendent’s,” she said.

At a personnel committee meet-ing last month, Wallace had stronglyobjected to adding the “unsatisfac-tory” category.

The debate over the review is partof a long and difficult spring for theboard, which is faced with cutting upto $25 million for the 2011-12 budget.

Members have contentiouslydebated the details of Wallace’s con-tract, and disagree over whether heviolated board policy by signing con-tracts with the district’s top sevenadministrators instead of referringthem to the board for approval. InApril, the board distributed revisedcontracts to four of those administra-tors and laid off two. The seventh isretiring.

During at least two public meet-ings, board member Amy Hodgin hascalled for Wallace’s resignation.

Myra Ford is among the boardmembers who had wanted to evalu-ate Wallace’s performance in April. She said his contract calls for anevaluation date no later than June, but board policy stipulates that thereview should be conducted by Feb-ruary. Wallace’s review typically hasbeen in June.

The policy committee, which Fordleads, will review the policy soon, shesaid.

The students collected and sorted over 15,000 CapriSun and Kool-Aid Jammers drink pouches and morethan 7,000 Ziploc plastic bags from landfills this year, and sent them to TerraCycle, where the previously non-recyclable materials will be reused to make new greenproducts.

The funds, earned through a point system at Terra-Cycle, were then donated to environmental charitieson the school’s behalf. Charities included: the NatureConservancy, which protects habitats and helps withoil spill cleanup; The Arbor Day Foundation, to planttrees in American forests; and Heifer Internationa, toprovide a flock of 50 chickens to starving families.

Additionally, a year’s supply of clean water andfood, as well as school supplies, were given to those inneed.

Lansing’s existing med-ical marijuana operationscould be “grandfathered”into a citywide ordinanceunder a plan being dis-cussed in a City Councilcommittee.

What that will mean, ifproposed new zoning rulestake effect, has not yetbeen defined. But the coun-cil’s public safety commit-tee has talked about suchthings as exempting busi-nesses based on location, for a period of time or untilownership changes hands.

The idea differs fromearlier drafts of the ordi-nance, which would havefound all but five of the48 recognized businessesimmediately out of com-pliance when a council-

imposed moratorium onlicenses ends July 1.

And it appears toaddress the risks of notoffering leniency CityAttorney Brig Smith hasposed to committee mem-bers — among them, thepossibility an aggrievedclinic owner could sue thecity.

“I’ve been fairly clearthat if an aggressiveapproach is taken thatthe city may well be sub-ject to challenge,” Smithsaid. “This isn’t a groupof unmotivated plaintiffswithout means.”

The policy, for now, would allow cultivation anddistribution of marijuanaonly in light and heavyindustrial districts, notalong commercial stripssuch as Michigan Avenue, where many are now

located. Businesses maynot be able to grow anddispense marijuana in thesame place, nor would useof the drug be permittedon site. They also wouldhave to operate specifieddistances from schools, churches and other child-centered locations.

Violators would beguilty of a criminal misde-meanor.

The policy has not yetcome before the council.Sticking points — suchas whether to allow mari-juana in commercial zonesand permit growing anddistributing it in one place— need to be resolved, committee member andcouncil President A’LynneRobinson said.

Michigan voters in 2008approved a law that mademarijuana legal for med-

Lindsay [email protected]

City refines its medical marijuana ordinanceNew zoning rules would go before council ical purposes. Its use

remains banned under fed-eral law.

The statute has beencriticized for its ambiguity, leaving regulationdecisions to local munici-palities.

The city enacted a mor-atorium in late 2010. Nolicenses are allowed to begranted until it ends.

This ordinance wouldn’taffect home-based grow-ers, who already are cov-ered by a separate citypolicy that, in essence,is “hands off, don’t tell,”Smith said.

Lansing Mayor VirgBernero has advocated theinclusion of commercialzoning and for a yearlong

grace period so businessowners have time to applyfor licenses and move.

Forgoing that mayrequire Smith to argue incourt clinics had no legalright to operate beforean ordinance was adopted.Whether that succeeds, hesaid, would depend on thepresiding judge and indi-vidual circumstances.

Isolating marijuanaactivity in industrial zones“in essence walls off a cer-tain section of the city,”Bernero said. “It’s a dan-gerous approach. I think itis stigmatizing when this issomething that the publicvoted for.”

Not all caregivers aresold on the plan.

Benjamin Bashore ownsA+ Medical Marijuana Ser-vices on Lansing’s northside, which might have tomove under new zoning.

That would mean break-ing existing leases andsigning new ones, he said, while patients still rely onthem for the drug.

Bashore understandsthe need for regulationsand is willing to paylicense fees. But he thinkscity leaders go too farwhen they dictate wherehe can operate.

“I see no reason for any-body to move,” he said.“We’re looking for a safetransfer. That’s what ourpatients want. That’s whatwe want to provide.”

The International Vintage Guitar CollectorsAssociation will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots this weekasking people to bring in any and all guitars. Thosethat do bring in their guitars will be able to speakwith collectors one on one and have their itemslooked at by a specialist. With the help of theseIVGCA members, offers will be made to those thathave vintage and modern guitars. Those madebefore 1970 are most valuable. All guitars willbe examined and purchased including vintageguitars, acoustic guitars, banjos, any and all othertypes of musical instruments. Those that decide tosell their items will be paid on the spot.

If you are like a lot of people, you might have anold Vintage Guitar lying around. If you have everwondered what it’s worth, now might be yourchance to find out and even sell it, if you choose.Vintage guitars could be worth a lot accordingto the International Vintage Guitar CollectorsAssociation also known as IVGCA. Collectors willpay a fortune for Vintage Guitars, Banjos, AcousticGuitars and even Drum Sets for their collections. If they are rare enough, one could be worth over$100,000 according to David Mcintosh, VintageGuitar Collector and IVGCA member. One 1960Gibson Les Paul went for $100,000 to a collectorin July of 2007. While that is an extreme example, many rare and valuable guitars are stashed awayin attics, closets, basements, or in a garage aroundthe country. The IVGCA and its collectors haveorganized a traveling event in search of all types ofVintage Guitars and Instruments. “Even commonguitars can be worth a significant amount due tohigh collector demands,” says Mcintosh. Thesecollectors are seeking the rarest guitars includingMartin, Gibson, Gretsch and Rickenbacker. Theseguitars always bring big premiums according tothe IVGCA.

While the IVGCA’s specialty is guitars, they arealso examining other instruments, including drumsets, banjos, flutes, clarinets, etc. The IVGCA says,“You never really know what you have until youritem is evaluated by a specialist.” Whatever kindof instrument you may have, bring it in to ourspecialist. Think about it. You could walk away$100,000 richer!”

So, whether you have one instrument youthink might be valuable or a large collection yourecently inherited, you can talk to these collectorsfor free. If you’re lucky, youmay have a rarity worththousands. Either way, there is nothing to lose andit sounds like fun.
