Regardless of your age or physical health, it is impor-

tant to designate someone you trust to manage your property and assets on your behalf in the event you become incapacitated. Signing a Durable Power of At-torney does not mean you are signing your rights away. You are still able to act on your own behalf provided you are capable of doing so. The document simply makes it possible for an authorized individual to handle fi nancial aff airs for you if you need assistance. It is important to keep in mind that ap-pointing someone as your legal agent under a Durable Power of Attorney is a very serious matter since it gives the agent the ability to sign your name and access your fi nances. Most people choose a responsible and trust-worthy relative to act as the agent, such as a

spouse, sibling, parent or child. Th is person does not need to be a fi nancial professional, but should understand that he or she is legally obligated to act as a fi duciary and in your best interests. If you become incapacitated and do not have a Durable Power of Attorney, the man-agement of your property and assets may need to be deter-mined by a court-appointed conservator. Not only can go-ing to court be very expensive, but it can also cause delays in the management of your

property. Obtaining a Durable Power of Attorney is relatively inexpensive and is easy to change later, if necessary. Since emergencies can happen at any time without warning, it is always best to be prepared. If the unexpected happens, you may fi nd that a Durable Power of Attorney is one of the most important documents you have ever signed.

STAY FIT, STAY SHARP

Readers of this column hardly need to be re-

minded that remaining phys-ically active helps maintain body weight at desirable levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and combat

the effects of arthritis, among other things. Among the most notable “other things” that exercise promotes is mental tness. All it takes is a daily, brisk, 30-minute walk to stave off cognitive decline. Of course, there are more than 30 minutes in a day, during which we can remain somewhat active to further protect the brain. In fact, the more an older person simply remains on his or her feet, the greater the bene t for the mind. Active seniors have the power to remain mentally sharp by getting physically t. At NOTRE DAME LONG TERM CARE CENTER, we realize the impor-tance of exercise for seniors. We offer a wide range of activity options that help our seniors achieve and maintain their “person-al best”. To learn more about our program, contact us today at (508) 852-3011. We will arrange an initial meeting, answer your questions, and provide you with a tour of our unique senior community at 559 Plan-tation Street. We’re here for you!

P.S. Bear in mind that physical exercise not only pumps blood through the heart, but it also nourishes the brain via im-proved circulation.
