Lavender

A Piano Fantasy

Bradley Vorjohan

Page 2: Lavender (Full Score)

“Lavender” is an attempt to express the multifaceted modern experience of being in love; it not only does it emulate infatuation, but it parodies itself, expressing an acute self-consciousness of its feelings. The piece is built off of two main themes, one in F-sharp and the other in D, each of which is treated very differently throughout the piece. The first theme both introduces and closes the piece, and shows up a few times in the middle; this theme is always expressed in its original key, and undergoes more and more dramatic and powerful changes each time is expressed. The other theme is expressed more frequently and undergoes more changes; over time, it becomes more broken and weaker, and even gets expressed in F sharp major in its final incarnation. Among these themes are a few unrelated sections that attempt to raise the romanticism and melodrama of the piece, but more modern jazz and quartal chords pepper the piece. The piece ends with an overtly awkward, over-romanticized, and corny finale.

Bradley Vorjohan is a student in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, with a minor in music. He has been self-taught in piano since age 7, also dabbling in cello, ocarina, acoustic and electric guitar, and drums. For six years, he contributed to NinSheetMusic, a website that publishes a continuously growing collection of piano arrangements of video game music. His experience there as both an arranger and editor has inspired his compositional efforts. His prior works have pulled from his closest musical experiences, largely being solo piano works with heavy influences of video game music. Recently, he has been expanding his compositional variety, experimenting with writing for a wider palate of instruments and ensembles. His overarching goal in composition is to find a happy medium between the asymmetrical avant-garde style of modern music and the well-worn aesthetic of the common practice.
