    ABSTRACT

    Title : LEADERDSHIP AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN COMMUNITY

    DEVELOPMENT: A CASE OF MUNAG YALA

    Degree : Master of Arts (Administration and Development)

    Academic Year : 2014

    The purposes of the study 1) to study the leadership in the community which faced to the

    conflict situation and 2) to study the conflict management in developing community of the

    leaders. The study was qualitative research in Tambon Paron and Tambon Tasap, Muang Yala by

    gathering the information from the literature and in-depth interviews with the 18 key informants.

    The data were analyzed by using coupled logic context comparable concepts using the narrative

    writing.

    For community development in the Yala city, leaning process and public participation,

    promote and development basic economics to be strengthened and sustainable as well as the

    communitys resolve were focus. Therefore, the community leader who has to play the important

    role in driving community development to be smooth and advantaged to the citizens in the village

    especially the leader who was able to manage the conflict in the community as seen in the 2 areas

    in Munag Yala as Tambol Paron and Tambol Tasap where there had been the conflict situation

    and the community leaders were able to get rid of.

    Results of the study will lead to the guideline of how to manage the conflict in

    community development of the leaders in others communities.

    Leadership of the 2 community leaders in Tambol Paron and Tambon Tasap found the

    meaning of the leader in 7 perspectives in community as empowerment, best model,

    knowledgeable, sympathy, justice, public consciousness and bringing the community to the goal.

    For the perception of leadership found that good personality, be able to deal with the community

    problem, obtaining cooperation and incentives in community development were the important

    elements for leadership perception. The characteristics and behavior of the leader were vision of

    community development, to be respected from the people in the community, motivation approach

    to community development, intellectual stimulation people in the community and consideration

    for others. The role of the leader in community development was responsible for coordination,

    duties assigned fulfillment, instructing and helping people in the community.

    Results of the conflict study and conflict management guideline revealed Tambon Paron

    and Tambon Tasap acknowledged the different issues which caused the conflict in the community.

    As Tambol Paron, the conflict issues were vandalism, environment, drug, religious activities,

    Groups activities and budget learning of SAO. The conflict issues of Tambon Tasap were family,

    drug and criminal, waste management, distrust between Muslim and Buddhist and groups

    activities. As shown in the result, there were only 2 similar issues: drug and groups activities in

    the village. For the causes and types of conflict raised from interpersonal conflict which affected

    both people and organization, for example, drug, groups activities and waste management. The

    conflict management guideline showed the several approaches starting with conflict management

    by conflict parties as compromising, collaborating, and accommodating. As the role of a

    community leader found that the appropriated using of leadership and participation were mostly

    used for conflict management. Resolving by the third party was only used for the environment.

    The essential problem of conflict management was the lack of cooperation and refused

    the information and facts from conflict party. Suggestions of conflict management are the leaders

    should have public consciousness, fairness, and resolve the problems with doctrine. Also

    forwarded the problem which can cause the conflict to others as they could not manage by

    themselves as well. Eagerly to find out the cause when the conflict appeared. The community

    should have the center area to discuss and have the optimistic view to the conflict party.

    Leadership and conflict management in community development, the Government

    sectors and private sectors should have the role for empowering and strengthen the community

    leaders by constructing and developing knowledge in community development such as peace, the

    capital management with the principles of good governance, the role of a leader befitting to the

    ASEAN Community and etc. As well as the participatory action research based community

    conflict would provide the community leaders knowledge and essential community management

    skill in order to be a self-sustainable management community.
