Definite Articles
Describe a specific noun:• Voici le gâteau!• Here’s the cake!

Describe a noun in a general sense:• J’aime le gâteau!• (In general) I like cake!
You should use them after AIMER and PREFERER• Je préfère la viande• I prefer meat
• J’aime la pizza• I like pizza
Indefinite Articles
Describes one whole item• J’ai mangé un gâteau.• I ate a (whole) cake
UN UNEDES
Describes several whole items:• J’ai mangé des gâteaux.• I ate several (whole)
cakes
Partitive ArticlesDU
DE LADE L’
Describes some, a portion or a certain amount of something.• J’ai mangé du gâteau.• I ate (some) cake
Often left out in English, but these articles CANNOT be left out in French!!
Le contexte…
• Depending on the context, definite, indefinite articles or partitive articles may be used, for example:
– Je commande la glace. • I am ordering the ice cream (on the menu).
– Je commande une glace.• I am ordering an ice cream (= one serving).
– Je commande de la glace. • I am ordering (some) ice cream.

You cannot use a PARTITIVE article for a subject, you would usually use the DEFINITE article.Example:NO! Du lait et du jus sont dans le frigo. NO!YES! Le lait et le jus sont dans le frigo. YES!
