Celebrating 45 Years 2015

PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Exhibits to commemorate 1715 Fleet disaster

Library staff created a “Hallway of Exhibits” at the main library. As you walk into the entryways, it will be difficult to miss seeing the extraordinary display cases and historical panels regarding the history of the 1715 Fleet disaster. Below are a few examples of what you may learn. The Native American tribe called Ais helped Spanish survivors recover the chests of gold and silver. The Ais was the same tribe that 19 years earlier helped the shipwrecked crew of Jonathan Dickinson and his family. The third largest commodity on board the ships was not gold, silver or jewels. It was cochineal. Imagine seeing hundreds of bags of red bugs!! Numerous items were on the ships and going back to Spain including chocolate, indigo, Chinese porcelain and Brazilwood. Each of the coins from Mexico and South America had meaningful symbols. One panel explains and illustrates the coins. Have you ever seen a Spanish Galleon? On four of the

historical panels, review close-up details of the ships and crew. The Riomar Wreck is one of the largest ships of the 1715 fleet and it was built circa 1678 in England. See the oversize painting by James A. Flood of this ship inside the library. What did the survivors do after the hurricane was over? What did they eat? Where did they sleep? Who

were their enemies? Visit the salvager’s camp display. Go to the library’s website http://www.irclibrary.org/genealogy/1715.html for updates and changes. Don’t forget the “Great Treasure Hunt”! Prizes are: 1) 8 Reales (Spanish coins) from West Bay Trading Company; 2) Commemorative coins from the 1715 Fleet Society; and 3) $25 gift certificate from Captain Hiram’s restaurant. You must answer 20 questions and turn in no later than July 31.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the flurry of “Back to School” sales:

• Jeff Luther is calling it a law-enforcement career at the end of August. He has been affiliated with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office for 40 years, having served under five sheriffs. He started out as a dispatcher, then went to road patrol and then to operations. He’s now in administration. His title is major, and he serves as the chief of staff. In September, he’ll turn 60 – so he won’t be retiring from the work-a-day world. “I’ve got numerous irons in the fire,” he said. Among other things, he plans to devote more time to his business (firearms training) and sell real estate. Born and raised here, Luther is one of those guys who “knows everybody” in the county. He’s a third-generation resident – his grandfather owned the Luther Hotel on 14th

Avenue and his father worked in the citrus business. I’m glad I crossed paths with him during my early days at the Press Journal. He was the Public Information Officer then. He was easily accessible and always told it like it is. He said if he had to do it all over again, he’d go into law enforcement. “I love the community,” he said. But it’s a totally different environment today. Criminals are much more sophisticated. “Today’s law enforcement officers have to be ahead of the game,” he said. “It’s a more dangerous job than it used to be.” Oh, you probably haven’t seen the last of Luther in activities related to the Sheriff’s Office. He said he plans to help Sheriff Deryl Loar with his reelection campaign next year.• Raise your hand if you were surprised to hear of the

looming layoffs at Piper Aircraft. It just goes to show the fragility of the global economy.• Let’s nip the expansion of “Christmas in July” in the bud. Having Santa Claus at Sebastian’s Riverside Park last weekend was a bit much, don’t you think? “Christmas in July” would be OK if not for the steady expansion of what’s considered the Christmas season – which basically starts the day after Halloween. If July 15 becomes one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, here’s hoping we cease with the “Christmas” references. Let the day stand on its own. • The strangest scene this month? I was getting gas at the Cumberland Farms store at U.S. 1 and 45th Street at 8:40 a.m. last Friday, and every pump was being used. There are 16 pumps, making it one of the biggest gas stations in the county. It was a beehive of activity. I was having flashbacks to those long gas lines in the mid-1970s.• So I’m interviewing a 30-year-old for an upcoming

“Meet me at Table 51” feature, and Bruce Springsteen’s “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” is playing on the Bob Evans sound system. Out of curiosity, I asked if she recognized the song. She didn’t. That was one of the biggest “man, I’m getting old!” moments I’ve ever experienced.• OK, apparently the downtown post office in Vero Beach isn’t going to close in September, as a sign on door indicated. Not that anyone would blame the U.S. Postal Service for moving, as its rent is going from about $15,000 a year to more than $120,000. That’s a pretty high price tag to put on “tradition.” • Lois Cappelen, the friendly face behind the counter at C.J. Cannon’s, has a keen interest in what sank to the ocean floor in the 1715 Fleet disaster. (See Pam Cooper’s article on page 2.) “I’d like to suck out all that water and see what’s under there,” she said.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Weddings. Funerals. Mother’s Day. Valentine’s Day. Susan Ellis-Peters knows the expectations are high when people order flowers for those occasions. She has been a floral designer for more than 30 years at Flower World Florist. (The flower shop, located at 2308 7th Ave., was previously at the corner of Old Dixie Highway and 16th Street and known as Johnson’s Flower World.) “People are so different, and so the same,” she said. A wedding requires a lot of consulting in the months leading up to the big day. She works with the bride on the color scheme and the theme “without breaking the bank.” She has seen budgets from under $300 to $3,500. Regardless of the budget, the goal is the same.

“You want the day to be the most special day ever for the bride,” she said. I asked Susan about what she thought of the business motto of Cindy Carson, the owner of Dragonfly Designs. That is, “Never underestimate the power of a flower.” Susan nodded in agreement. She talked about how flowers are the essence of nature – they’re not edible. “Flowers are just there for beauty,” she said.

During the summer months, she spends most of her workday on business accounts. The businesses have flowers delivered to the office, delivered to clients to acknowledge birthdays and the like. In a few months, it’ll be the holiday season, which is always a busy time for florists. “It’s just a plethora of activity,” she said. So, what are Susan’s favorite flowers? She said the pincushion protea would be No. 1, followed by peonies and lilies.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

380. “Follow Me”(2001) Uncle KrackerMemory: Yes, even I was surprised an Uncle Kracker song made the countdown.

379. “Meet Me Half Way”(1987) Kenny LogginsMemory: A soothing ballad. He’s at his best singing “slow” songs. (I can’t stand “Footloose,” for example.)

378. “The Most Beautiful Girl”(1973) Charlie RichMemory: My hometown radio station played this song every morning for months on end. As you can see, it made a lasting impression!

What have been the longest incarcerations at the Indian River County Jail during the past 10 years?

Blake Seeley (grand theft auto, attempted murder, kidnapping): 1,881 days. Christopher Evers (first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse): 1,867 days.
