Ourhistory

pening a window on Florence, the

Othought immediately goes to its

art and glorious past and, as if by

magic, a long list of famous characters

appears, Michelangelo, Giotto, Cellini,

Brunelleschi, and so on; however Leonardo,

taught us that Florence is not only a city of art

but also of creativity and talent that

contributed to progress and science and

therefore is recognised all over the world.

Antonio Meucci who invented the telephone whose first idea dates back to 1849 and its patent to 1871.

Eugenio Barsanti, born in Pietrasanta but moved to Florence where, after his studies he became physics professor at the University of Florence and invented the combustion engine. The prototype was built in 1854 at the Officine Benini.

Guglielmo Righini Director of the Observatory of Arcetri, where, around the second half of the 1950s, under his direction the first radio telescope to listen to the sound of sunspots ex-plosions, was built.

Nello Carrara, born in Florence in 1900, studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, and graduated in phys-ics. One of his best friends was Enrico Fermi.

In 1936, he met the Engineer Tiberio and started with him the studies on a strange instrument called “localiser”, that later became famous as radar.

At that time he was teaching at the Naval Academy. Then war started, and apart from being a great tragedy for many people, it evidenced the perspicacity of the English people who developed the idea of the “localiser”, which revealed to be an extremely useful instrument to localise the ene-mies.

This is how the radarwas invented.

This is where ourstory begins.

After the war Nello Carrara, together with Lorenzo

Fernandes, started to transform the SMA, a small company

located on the Lungarni of Florence and that produced

shadow-free operating lamps and infrared detectors, in a

reality where electronics was more and more replacing the

other activities.

The first experiences were carried out with very little

money, the remnants of war of the ARAR vehicle parks, and

lots of creativity.

The first Italian radar was realised, it was 1953...

company.

The ARAR vehicle parks were located all over the

national territory and represented the “driving

force” for the reconstruction of the transport ser-

vices in Italy where, in the post war period there

were very few motor vehicles, at least until the na-

tional companies started operating again.

fter a few years, thanks to his

Aentrepreneurial talent, typical of

peop le f rom Vene to , Remo

Pasquali, left SMA and started his own

activity as external collaborator.

The “Officine Pasquali” company was

founded in 1958 in a garage, and the only

workers at the beginning were Remo Pasquali

and a trainee.

ver the years the company has

Ogrown engaging in various

sectors, mainly the defence one

and the civil one oriented towards space and

radio astronomy products.

For the defence sector, Pasquali Microwave

Systems, supplies devices for the radar

systems developed by the most important

Italian and multinational companies in

different continents of the world.

A constant growth due to the close collabora-

tion in the relation with the clients.

For this reason, Pasquali Microwave Systems

is more and more involved in new high

technology challenges.

asquali Microwave Systems is also

Pinvolved in the realisation of compo-

nents and assemblies, even of its own

production, destined to the industry of the

sector that produces medical apparatuses,

refrigerating systems, and in the development

of new telecommunication technologies.

10

In the last years, Pasquali Microwaves

Systems has been engaged in the space

sector, specifically in the realisation of

radiofrequency components to be used at

cryogenic temperatures up to 4K.

part from the supplies in Italy, other

Aimportant orders have been

obtained for ESA (European Space

Agency) and the NASA JPLs (Jet Propulsion

Laboratories).

About twenty years ago, Pasquali Microwave

Systems founded and purchased respectively

“Galvanica Pasquali” and RTW “Ride the

Wave”, which takes care of EM design and RF

testing.

The close collaboration of these three compa-

nies allows obtaining important results

through the design, construction, and devel-

opment of radiofrequency components and

assemblies.
