The housebreaking and theft case against three accused, two males and a female, is finally in the Tshilwavhusiku Regional Court.

Tshifhiwa Tshiovhe (33), Mavis Ramapala (31) and Mpho Melton Madume (27) appeared in court last Thursday. The lawyer for one of the accused was not available in court and the case was eventually postponed to 25 July, when the trial will resume.

The three stand accused of breaking into a residential house and stealing furniture, utensils,

linen and other related items to the value of R50 000. Some of the stolen propertry was confiscated at Ha-Matidza in Nzhelele after the accused had allegedly arranged for transport to ferry the prop-erty to such connections.

Tshiovhe, who is also the complainant's neigh-bour, was the first suspect to be linked to the crime. The police report stated that Tshiovhe had since confessed to the police about the theft. Further investigations linked Madume and Ramapala to the case. Madume is from Nzhelele, while Ramapala lives in Tshikota.

On 20 August 2012, the complainant, Mrs Tovhowani Sadiki, returned from Gauteng to find her house empty at Ravele village in the Sinthu-mule area. Sadiki and the Tshilwavhusiku police followed footprints, which led them to Tshiovhe's homestead, where they allegedly found his wife watching TV programmes on Sadiki's TV set. She allegedly noticed some of her plates and table cloths on the table.

The case has since dragged on while the police were finalising investigations and the prosecution considering whether the case should be tried in the regional court.

Sadiki was present in the court last Thursday. “I travel from Gauteng to attend this case,” she said.

High taxi fee angers communities

Members of the community of Ndzingindzingi outside Giyani toyi-toyi over the increase in taxi fare.

The community of Ndzing-indzingi outside Giyani is up in arms over the increase in taxi fares by the Hlaniniki Mas-wanganyi Taxi Association.

Members of the community accuse them of increasing the fare every six months without consulting the community. Resi-dents of the villages of Maswan-ganyi, Bode and Ndzingindzingi marched along the streets last week and asked the residents to boycott taxis in the area. Accord-

ing to a community leader, Mr Kales Hlungwani, the commu-nity will use bakkies and buses until the taxi association agrees to reduce their fares.

Mr Edwin Chabalala also said the taxi association was undermining the community by increasing its fare without consulting the community.

He said they were going to consult with the police and De-partment of Roads and Transport to assist them when they took

other alternatives as transport.Mr Mbhazima Maluleke,

chairperson of the taxi associ-ation, said the association had decided to increase the fare because of the petrol hike.

“We are running our business at a loss because the fuel prize is increasing regularly.

We are still committed to sit down with the community to get a better solution regarding the tariff structure,” said Maluleke.

The so-called Aloe Park in the northern residential area of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) may soon be up for sale.

According to an alienation no-tice placed in a local newspaper of 14 June, the municipality in-tends to sell Erf 1640, and it lists the size as 800 square metres. This is the triangular public park falling between Louis Botha, Messina and Rivier Street, a popular resting area for visitors. It is populated by a variety of indigenous trees.

Being zoned as a public park, it may not currently be sold or used for any other purpose before a public process of park closure has taken place.

The actual size of the property is also 9 113 square metres and not 800 square metres as stated in the official notice.

In the same notice, the Makha-do municipality published its intention to alienate Erf 1217 in Tshikota Extension 1 Township, measuring 5,4115 ha.

The director of development

planning of the Makhado Mu-nicipality, Cllr M Sinthemule, confirmed upon enquiry that this Erf has been zoned for education-al purposes.

The residents of Tshikota have been craving a fully fledged secondary school for more than a decade.

Any person who wishes to object to the sale of the two erven must lodge an objection in writ-ing to the municipal manager at Private Bag X2596 or fax number 015 516 1194 before 4 July.

Mysterious fire destroys six shops

Bystanders watch as fire fighters battle the flames.

A mysterious fire gutted a shopping complex in Tho-hoyandou, causing millions of rand in damages.

The fire, which completely destroyed five shops and their contents in a complex next to the main road, is said to have started around 19:00 on Satur-day. The cause of the fire is still a mystery.

Billowing smoke and con-suming flames could be seen kilometres away from Thohoy-andou. News of the fire spread like the fire itself as those at the scene informed friends through the social networks.

Within a short time, the whole complex was swarming with onlookers, while the fire de-partment from the Vhembe District municipality battled to control the fire. At some of the shops they had to break down the doors as the owners were not present.

During the commotion, thugs who took advantage of the situ-ation had a field day, with some taking whatever they could lay

their hands on from the shops. It was only the arrival of the police that saved the day and stopped the looters, who were struggling to steal refrigerators, microwave ovens and other appliances from the scene.

Eyewitness David Mphephu, a security guard who works at the adjacent building, said he smelt something and saw thick smoke coming from a spares shop in the complex. "I was doing my regular rounds around the building where I work when I saw this black smoke coming out of the shop. From where I was, I could see that the shop was on fire, and I immediately raised the alarm and the police and the fire department arrived," he said.

Mphephu said he had seen fires in town before, but that was the worst ever. "I am still shocked that the building I saw intact when I reported for work is now gone," he added.

Mr Alex Nematode, the com-munity services manager of Vhembe District Municipality,

who helped in stopping the fire from spreading, said it was one of the worst fires they had ever extinguished. "We are still not certain of what could have caused the fire. The cause is still a mystery to us and subject of a police investigation. We are just happy that no loss of life has been reported," he said.

This is not the first devas-tating fire in Thohoyandou in recent years. In 2006, Shoprite suffered a severe blow when one of its branches in Thohoyandou was completely razed by a rag-ing fire, causing millions of rand in damage.

In 2008, another major fire completely gutted the Nan-do’s outlet in Thohoyandou. A wholesale and warehouse were also damaged extensively during a fire in town, where millions of rands in stock was lost a few years ago.

The spokesperson of the Tho-hoyandou police, Maj Mashudu Malelo, confirmed on Wednes-day morning that they are inves-tigating a case of arson.

Four years in jail for man who buys illegal rhino horn Despite his plea for correction-al supervision, Makhado (Louis Trichardt) resident Yahya Shoeb Jiwa was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment last Friday.

The 45-year-old Jiwa’s trial com-menced in the Louis Trichardt Re-gional Court last Thursday and took two days to finalise, when his advo-cate, Mr Marius Bouwer, called three more witnesses to testify in mitigation on his behalf.

Jiwa was arrested in February 2011, following a police trap that was set by the South African Na-tional Parks’ Environmental Crime Investigation Unit and the police’s special investigation unit, the Hawks. Jiwa subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges relating to the illegal purchasing and possession of rhino horns. During his case, more details surrounding his arrest were revealed.

According to Jiwa’s legal team, he approached a park ranger with the intention of buying two rhino horns from him.

It would later be revealed that the horns were valued at roughly R10 million. Unfortunately for Jiwa, the ranger immediately informed the police.

According to Bouwer, Jiwa had acted out of concern for his family. His seven-year-old son is suffering from a cerebral disease that has left him bed-ridden and dependent. Jiwa’s wife also needed eye surgery at the time of his arrest. Jiwa said he was planning to sell the rhino horns at a big profit to help pay for their medical expenses.

Before his arrest, said Bouwer,

Jiwa was a struggling businessman who had just sold his business in Tho-hoyandou and was selling cellphone accessories. Since his arrest, Bouwer added, Jiwa has been bankrupted and portrayed as a criminal in the media while continuing to be the only breadwinner for his family. Despite this, Bouwer argued, Jiwa continued to be a community builder. All this was presented as reasons why Jiwa should receive mercy from the court and not be sent to jail.

On Friday Bouwer brought an in-terlocking application, momentarily bringing all proceedings to a grinding halt. He requested that a part of the money that was seized by the police during Jiwa’s arrest be paid back. This was to enable Jiwa to pay his legal bills. During this application it came to light that the police had seized R88 000, which Jiwa had paid to their agent, and a further R80 000 was discovered in his vehicle. A part, R50 000 to be exact, of the R80 000 rightfully belonged to Jiwa’s wife, which he had borrowed from her shortly before he went to buy the rhino horns from the police agent. Part of the money she had inherited or received from her family. Magistrate Pat Cloete rejected the interlocking application.

When the State addressed the court, they asked for eight years’ imprison-ment because Jiwa’s activities were far worse than those of a poacher. “He created a market for rhino horns,” said the State. “He never showed any remorse or tried to help the police in telling them whom he intended to sell the horns to and only pleaded guilty

because he realised that the case against him was watertight.”

The State also argued that if the family was so desperately looking for money to cover medical expenses, they could have used their inheritance money instead of for illegal activities. “Today the State is the voice of the African child who has the right to see a rhino,” concluded the prosecutor.

After magistrate Cloete had fin-ished reading out the sentence, a half-stunned Jiwa had to be led to the prisoner holding cells of the magis-trate’s court. Magistrate Cloete said that supervision’s effectiveness was

almost non-existent in South Africa, due to a lack of proper management. In addition to the direct imprison-ment, the whole amount seized by the police during the arrest was forfeited and to be paid to the anti-poaching team of the KNP to aid in the war against rhino poaching.

Jiwa’s legal team did not appeal the magistrate’s verdict. Afterwards, Jiwa got agitated with his team when they tried to explain to him that it would be a fruitless effort to bring such an application. Jiwa’s wife and daughter supported him while he was being booked into prison.

Baloyi, followed by Mutuque, walks to the holding cells at the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court after they had pleaded guilty to charges related to rhino poaching.

Two rhino poachers who were arrested in the Kruger National Park (KNP) earlier this year pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.

Dumisani Baloyi (33) and Enok Mutuque (48) appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Friday, 21 June. The pair was arrested in the Pha-furi part of the KNP on 5 May, after they had tried to evade arrest by the police. During their arrest, police found an unlicensed .458 rifle, ammunition, two axes and two rhino horns in their possession. Not too far from where the men were arrested, the police had also discovered a rhino carcass with the horns removed.

Baloyi and Mutuque pleaded guilty on several charges, all related to the illegal hunting of a pro-tected species in the KNP.

Their case was postponed until July 25 for sentencing. Mutuque and Baloyi will remain in custody.

The Makhado SAPS welcomed Brig Alex Seopa into their corps as the new cluster commander.

Brig Seopa met with various media institutions in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) this Tuesday. During the meeting, he gave a slight glimpse of all his plans to curb crime in the cluster. Some of the stations that fall under the Makhado cluster include, among others, Waterval, Bandelierkop, Tshitale and Levubu.

Seopa joined the police force in 1979 and served at different stations as station or cluster commander. In 1991, he became the first black station commander of the Polokwane SAPS. He was also the station commander of Gilead, Motetema and Sekhukhune and the deputy area commissioner of the Capricorn district.

Seopa, who reported for duty a week ago, has already started strategizing. He also said that the Makhado police seemed to be working hard, but that there was room for improvement. “Lazy or corrupt policemen will be dealt with internally,” he said. Seopa further added that he had an open-door policy when it came to complaints, and through this he wanted to establish and maintain a lasting relationship with the community that he served. “By cleaning house, we will gain the community’s trust and so change the picture.”

“Crime cannot be dealt with in isolation” – is another motto of Seopa's. Some future plans include the incorporation of various community anti-crime forums, such as the pastors’ forum and the Soutpansberg Town Watch, as well as the es-tablishment of neighbourhood watch committees

and a “tekkie” squad.This, says Seopa, will go a long way in curbing

crimes such as housebreaking, domestic violence and drug-related crimes. Furthermore, Seopa acknowledged the alarming increase in other violent crimes such as rape in the area, and gave his assurance that these would be reduced. “We are constantly working on strategies to address the crimes in the area,” said Seopa.

New commander wants to clean house

Khosi Vho-Vusani Tshimbupfe laid to restThousands of mourners attended the funeral service of the late Khosi Vho-Vusani Tshimbu-pfe on Saturday.

Khosi Tshimbupfe died after a long illness and was laid to rest in a closed traditional ceremony last Friday night. The funeral was held at Tshimbupfe Thondoni. Among the mourners were former MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs Soviet Lekganyane, Vhav-enda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and ANC provincial task team (PTT) member Thembi Nwen-damutswu. Netshimbupfe died last Monday (17th)

at a private hospital in Gauteng.

National House of Traditional Leaders dep-uty chairperson Chief Sefogole Makgeru was one of the speakers during the funeral. He urged traditional leaders to uphold the legacy of Khosi-Netshimbupfe

and to deliver an incident-free initiation school season. He said Netshimbupfe worked tirelessly to ensure that initiation schools ran smoothly in the province.

ANC PTT member Ms Thembi Nwendamutswu said Netshimbupfe was a truthful leader who was able to utilise his legal and traditional skills in the ANC and within the traditional leadership circles.

King Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said that the deceased had been a soldier for the bigger part of his life and epitomised the best that came from the traditional leadership. “He was one of those men who fought for development in the prime of his life and excelled at everything he did. He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to the leadership,” he added.

“His death will undoubtedly leave a void too difficult to fill, not only in the family, but also in our community," he said. Ramabulana said that al-though the family, friends and community accepted what had happened, it would be difficult to forget that this death had robbed the community of an energetic leader who was full of zeal and courage.

Musina Municipality's Chief Financial Officer, Ms Vhutshilo Tshikundamalema, recently celebrated her 35th birthday. With her during the cutting of her birthday cake are some of her fellow staff members.

Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase addressed about 300 pupils from different schools in the Elim area during a 16 June event held at Muthuhadini Primary School at Mpheni. He told the leaders who were present, including Makhado Municipality´s mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, and local ward councillors to encourage the youth to study the “Freedom Charter” for them to understand better what it means to fight for one´s rights. The construction of the R1,2 million Thusong Service Centre in Musina Nancefield Extension 8 is complete and it will soon be in operation. This is a relief to the local people, who will soon be able to access municipal and government services on their doorstep.

There was jubilation last Saturday when several pupils of the Sendedza Primary School were given a pair of shoes and a uniform by the non-profit organisation "We Care" project from Tshavhalovhedzi. "We Care" is an organisation initiated by young people in the village to help alleviate poverty and help children reach their full potential. The chairperson of the project, Rendani Ramavu, said most working adults donated at least R50 a month to the organisation. The money is then used to help children in the area. Many people keep on com-plaining about poverty and the high rate of unemployment, but a 45-year-old resident of Siyandhani village decided to use her talent for beadwork to provide for her and her family.

Lidiwe Nkuna started with beadwork in Giyani seven years ago after knocking on many doors looking for a job without any luck. She grew up without any formal basic education. Through her hard work and dedication, she be-came the bead queen in Giyani and surrounding areas. Most of her work centres around tradi-tional Tsonga doilies, necklaces and tradition-al decorative garments, such as ximbelani and micheka.

According to her, she once sold tomatoes in the streets of Giyani, but after learning bead-work, her life changed for the better forever. “I can proudly say one

of my sons now is completing his studies this year at the Tsh-wane University of Technology, financed through my beadwork." She says her artistic talent has proven successful for the past seven years and she is no longer begging from anyone.

She also exhibits her work during official events such as

parties and other government activities around Giyani, and people are showing big support to her work. Tourists visiting the Kruger National Park are also keen to buy her work. “I would like also to advise young people who are not currently working to try to use the talents that God has given them,” she adds.

Bead work changes life of rural woman

The Tshivhase royal family, which has been rocked by divisions, has once again shown that the war between the two factions in the family is far from over.

For some time now, there have been accusations and counter-accusations from the factions in the family. This week, a group purporting to be the Tshivhase royal family dropped a bombshell by denouncing the leadership of Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase and also relieving him of his royal duties.

As if that was not enough, the group also shocked the nation when they alleged that Thovhele Ken-nedy Tshivhase is not the rightful royal heir as he was already born when his mother was married into the Tshivhase family.

In a letter in Limpopo Mirror's possession, the group, led by Lesley Tshivhase, who is the "Tshivhase Royal Family" spokesperson, indi-viduals purporting to be the inner circle of the Tshivhase royal family, including the khadzi, headmen and khotsimunenes, have signed a letter relieving Kennedy Tshivhase of his royal duties with immediate effect.

The Tshivhase royal family is the custodian of the Tshivhase traditional leadership, a body with powers to determine who becomes a chief and other royal matters. The termination implies that Kennedy's mother also ceases to act as deputy se-nior traditional leader of the Tshivhase community.

The Tshivhase royal family has also simulta-neously requested the Limpopo government to withdraw its recognition of Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase as senior traditional leader of the Tshivhase community with immediate effect and also to cut the remuneration attached to the position

Among the reasons cited in the letter is the “disgraceful conduct” by Kennedy, which is said to have brought the Tshivhase royal family and traditional leadership as a whole into disrepute.

The letter states that Kennedy has undermined the royal family by taking unilateral decisions like announcing that he has dissolved the royal council. He is also alleged to have appointed his mother as deputy senior traditional leader without consulting the royal family.

It also cites his refusal to listen to good advice from family and the government, more especially on issues of installations of traditional leaders and his appointment as senior traditional leader, which is said not to be in accordance with custom and tradition.

According to the letter, Thovhele Kenne-dy Tshivhase was born in 1962, when Prince Tshivhase was not yet married to his mother.

Lesley said that according to Venda custom, Kennedy's mother could not bear an heir, as she already had a child when she got married to Prince Tshivhase. He said the family did not welcome her

to the Tshivhase family and that was the reason lobola was not paid for her while Prince was still alive.

“She got married under mysterious circum-stances after Prince's death and the installation of Kennedy did not get the blessings of Makhadzi Vho Londolani as it was not according to custom,” said Lesley. He said Kennedy was well aware that he did not belong to the Tshivhase family and it was not surprising that he was destabilising the royal family and causing division among traditional leaders by installing others in places where chiefs were already in place.

Lesley accuses Kennedy of moving the seat of the Tshivhase royalty to Khubvi. "He has also moved from the royal palace and deserted his own people at Mukumbani; he is now residing at Sibasa with a concubine and is now a subject of the Mphaphuli. This is very embarrassing to us as a family," said Lesley.

Insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity confirm that all is not well in the royal family, with the family being torn apart daily.

Asked for comment, Tshivhase royal spokes-person Chief Avhatakali Tshivhase said the family had no further comment. "We are still upholding the view that Tshivhase family matters should not be discussed in newspapers. We have a way of dealing with challenges and we will be meeting on 29 June. We have extended invitations to all concerned and Lesley is also welcome to attend,” said Avhatakali Tshivhase.

Funds available for small entrepreneursSmall-business entrepreneurs and young people in Limpopo will no longer have to suffer if they want to start small busi-nesses, thanks to the Small En-terprise Finance Agency (Sefa).

“We want small-business en-trepreneurs and young people to know that funding is available for small businesses who want to start up, expand or grow. We be-lieve that small businesses are the drivers of job creation and if we fund them, they could also create jobs in other poor communities,” said the chief executive offi cer of Sefa, Mr Thakhani Makhuvha.

Makhuvha was speaking during a road show in Thohoy-andou last Thursday, presenting information about funding for small businesses.

More than 300 small-business representatives attended the event. He added that eligible South African citizens with valid identity documents could apply for assistance.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe district, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, welcomed the initiative and said the majority of the people in Vhembe, especially young people, were without

jobs. “Vhembe is a rural district and the prospect of entering into activities within the formal economy is very limited. We understand that the development of small and medium enterprises is the only route to take, if we are serious about creating jobs in our communities,” said Matibe.

One of the small-business entrepreneurs who attended the road show, Mr Brian Sivhugwana (22) of Mukonise Cooperative, based in Khalavha village outside Thohoyandou, said the informa-tion was an eye opener for him and others.

“Islandman” fends for himself relentlesslyRelentlessly he fends for him-self, with only a wheelchair, his blanket and a will to live.

Readers alerted the Limpopo Mirror to the plight of a man literally living on the narrow island between the two lanes of Hospital Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Mr Relent Ndlovu, around 40 years of age, does not have the use of his legs. They have been burnt at “dustbins”, which seems to indicate the dumping site outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Relent has strong arms and he propels his wheel-chair up the hill to his “home” of the past two to three months, almost in front of the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

With pat ience, the So-tho-speaking Relent politely answers the barrage of ques-tions, as much as his Afrikaans and English allow him. On his lap is his bundle of wood, his warmth for the evenings. From his answers a probable picture of his life slowly emerges.

In the morning when the sun awakens him, Relent gets onto his wheelchair and takes on the “far” road to the dumping site, in search of food. He is also seen at the taxi ranks. Only when it’s dark does he return from his “day’s work” and wraps himself in his blanket. Later, he is seen sleeping on top of his worn-out blanket with the South African flag on it, covered by a new blue blanket. A grey blanket is pitched on a tree branch and blue slippers lie on the ground, possibly donated by a kind Samaritan.

He could be around 40 years of age, though he no longer has an ID document, which he sup-poses could be with his long-lost relatives in Pietermaritzburg ... Relent indicates that he was born in Mudimeli in Nzhelele. There were times that he lived in the hospital, perhaps coinciding with the time he burnt his legs. Last year, his hands needed treatment and he was admitted. Subsequent to a confl ict situa-

tion he was, however, asked to leave the hospital premises. He apparently also stayed opposite Safari Motors in the new ex-tension, but due to the danger of crime there he chose a more “secure” spot. He washes in puddles of water near Bridge Auto, although that seems to happen more when the weather is warm. He uses the bush when he needs a toilet.

Relent realizes that he cannot inhabit his “secure” spot forever and is willing to go if he can fi nd a place of shelter. The challenge in town is that, although atten-tion is being given in Tshikota to a shelter for people under 18, there is no shelter for disabled or even for able-bodied homeless adults.

“In my opinion it is very shameful. When it is raining, it is too cold. His relatives are not near,” said Mr Ruben Masindi, a nearby security guard. “I hope his relatives hear of this article and maybe come to fetch him,” said another guard.

“I would be hor-rifi ed if I drove past one morning, only to fi nd a body frozen to death. It is not right that someone should live on an island in the street,” said Ms Pat Menne, who uses the road frequently.

Ms Diane Ban-natyne, who often does charity work through different or-ganisations, referred to another homeless wheelchair owner who is known for “reck-less” driving. “Relent should not be con-fused with him. There is defi nitely more than one in town. It breaks my heart that there is no shelter for these people,” Bannatyne said.

Teachers of the Masedi Combined School celebrated Youth Day last Tuesday by wearing school uniforms to school.

Dreadful discovery shocks communityCommunity members from Ha-Tshikhudo in Tshilata at Nzhelele were reeling from shock after the body of a 32-year-old man, Fhumulani Godfrey Mukwevho, was dis-covered hanging from a tree in the nearby bushes.

The body of the man was spotted by a resident who was fetching logs in the bushes last Thursday.

home the previous afternoon and never returned. His devas-tated 83-year-old grandmother, who was staying with him, was shocked when she found out it was his body that had been found in the bush.

She said that she heard people talking about a person who had committed suicide in the bushes. She went to investigate, but did not for one moment think that it may be her grandson. “He was a person who often slept away from home. We thought he would come back as usual, but to our surprise we found him there,” she added, referring to the bushes.

The deceased’s younger broth-er, Gudani Mukwevho, said he spoke to him the previous night and he told him that life was hard and no one would know what he was going through. “He told me to take all his belongings and that Thabelo (a girl) would come and cook for the family,” he said.

The village’s civic member, Mr Masuthulela Phalanndwa, said the deceased was a person loved by almost everyone in the village. He used to help during funerals at the village. “His death shocked everyone in the com-munity. He was always happy,” he said.

Some members of the com-munity blamed the police for arriving late at the scene and accused them of rather attending minor cases such as when people are playing cards in the streets. Siloam police station spokes-person, W/O Edward Tharaga, reacted to this criticism and said communities should know that police vehicles are often attend-ing to different matters and may not arrive at a scene immediately. “By the time we heard about the incident, all vans were attending to other matters. We had to cancel other trips to get a vehicle there in time,” he said.

The struggle for league points will continue among the teams that are playing under the banner of the Limpopo Sasol Women’s League tomorrow (Saturday).

Sisters Ladies FC will have the mammoth task to stop Ma-In-dies at the Nwamitwa grounds. Ma-Indies are hot contenders

for the league title, while Sisters have been battling lately to win a match.

Tshandama Young Stars will have a date with Bakone at the Tshandama grounds. The match between Queens and Re Tla Dira will be played at the Nirvana grounds. Development will en-tertain Chippas at Mokgopong.

Kanatla Ladies will be the host side in their fixture against Mah-welereng, while the Modimole Ladies will travel to the Univer-sity of Limpopo’s fields for their match against the local team.

A match that is expected to attract a lot of spectators will be between Mphanama Ladies and Botlokwa Ladies at Mphanama.

A mother of two from a poor family of seven says she is over-joyed after receiving a house.

Adelaide Ngobeni (30) of Bungeni lost her parents five years ago and had to endure abject poverty with her children and four siblings. Their fortunes changed for the better when Limpopo MEC for Public Works Thabitha Mohlalathey handed them a new four-room house. The handing-over ceremony coincid-ed with Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale’s visit to Bungeni.

Adelaide said the newly com-pleted house meant a lot to the family. “We lived under bad

conditions when we had to share a room with my elderly brothers,” said Ngobeni.The family has a two-room house, but it was dam-aged by the heavy rains last year and they had to share a thatched rondavel.

The ward councillor, Grace Ndhovela, said the local com-munity structures made presen-tations to the provincial gov-ernment through the Makhado municipality last year, asking for assistance. Adelaide was a cleaner at a local school, but had to suffer like many people when the Limpopo Department of Education said it did not have

money and retrenched cleaners and security guards who volun-teered and were paid stipends. “This house was built for you and you do not owe anybody a cent,” she said. Cllr Ndhovela praised the construction company from Polokwane, Tazet, that built the house for the family.

Makhado municipality’s may-or, David Mutavhatsindi, said it was customary for the govern-ment to present something tp the community when it visited an area and Ngobeni’s house would be a reminder of the fact that the Limpopo government visited the area to listen to the people.

Local campion of the disabled buriedDespite her permanent disability, Lufuno Ma-sevhe (38) was described by mourners as one of the champions of disabled people, whose con-tributions towards community development will never be forgotten.

Masevhe’s moving funeral was held at her home village of Haluvhimbi, outside Thohoyan-dou, at the weekend. She died last week after a short illness.

Friends, relatives and community members braved the extremely cold weather last Saturday and descended on the mountainous village to bid their final farewell to Lufuno, who during her lifetime alternated between her roles as an emerging entrepreneur and a fighter for the rights of disabled people.

Cllr Rapson Rambuwani, who is responsible for special programmes in Vhembe District Municipality, said Lu-funo had left a void that would be difficult to fill. He said she had fought for the rights of the disabled in all the local municipali-ties within Vhembe. “Most of the buildings have been upgraded to accommodate dis-abled people because of her voice. Other disabled people have wheelchairs and work-ing equipment because

Lufuno stood up and spoke without fear. She showed that disabled people are only affected physically, but they are mentally effective be-cause of the business activities she undertook. We will always remember the good work she did for our communities.”

Lufuno was born in 1974 at Tshivhilwi-Tshilon-we. She attended Tshilidzini Special School and Helen Franz School in Bochum, where she completed her Grade 12. She also obtained a qualification in computer science.

During her lifetime, she involved herself in businesses like catering, construction and car washes.

She was buried in the Haluvhimbi graveyard, after a sermon by Pastor Avhasei Ramalida of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Film maker Isaac Mamushiana, or Vhakoma, was in shock after a cloner/stalker posted a message announcing the death of former president Nelson Mandela. With him is fellow actor Madovhi, who stars in most of his movies.

Reputable local movie king and master come-dian Isaac Mamushaina this week came out breathing fire, accusing a cloner/stalker who is using the social network Facebook to tarnish his good name by posting derogatory, insulting and disrespectful remarks.

Mamushiana (33), better known as Vhakoma

in movie circles, who rose to prominence through the release of thrilling movies such as Muloi Ha Neti, Garden Boy and Situation (Nyimelo), said he was alerted to the remarks by his brother, who reprimanded him and enquired “whether something is not going well in my head”.

The well-known comedian, who has unearthed many talented actors in Limpopo, is not new to being stalked. In 2007, he received death threats from people who accused him of impersonating the late comedian Vho Maswigiri. He says, however, the latest incident is making his life a nightmare. “I was pressurised into social networking by my thousands of fans who wanted to communicate with me, and I thought it was the right thing to do. I did not know that it would have negative repercussions and that someone would stoop so low as to use my name to insult people,” he said.

He is called True Vhakoma on Facebook. Ac-cording to him, a “faceless stalker”, called Vhako-ma and Vho Piet, is posting photographs of people in compromising situations, some naked, having sex or indulging in other unbecoming behaviour. The “stalker has gotten out of hand and is now in-sulting people,” he said. The last straw came when the scoundrel posted the announcement of the death of former president Nelson Mandela.

“This has compromised my career as an actor as my fans now do not take me seriously. I have lost a lot of respect, with many people writing and commenting about my reasoning. How can this guy stoop so low and use my name to announce the death of our father Mandela while he is still alive?” he added.

“What I want is for people who have the exper-tise to trace him, so we can speak face to face. This is a total abuse of these useful networks,” he said.

Reggie Nengovhela, one of Vhakoma’s ardent fans, said he used to follow Vhakoma all along, but of late he decided to block him as a friend. “It is so shocking. I have seen things and comments that do not depict the Vhakoma I know. I have lost all the respect I had for him and his company,” said Nengovhela.

An early-morning struggle be-tween an alleged housebreaker and a policeman in Fondwe in Nzhelele left the suspect dead and the policeman injured.

In the early hours of Saturday morning 1 June, community members of Fondwe woke up in the darkness to witness the end result of a battle between the policeman and the housebreaking suspect.

The policeman, the owner of the house, was awakened by nois-es and when he investigated he allegedly saw the suspect trying to steal his plasma television. Ac-cording to a police spokesperson, the house owner noticed that the

suspect had a dangerous object which he had used to gain access to the house. He allegedly used this to threaten the policeman. The policeman then took out his gun and defended himself.

According to the provincial spokesperson, Brigadier Hang-wani Mulaudzi, whilst the police-man was trying to defend himself the suspect attacked him and a shot was fired. “The policeman, who was not on duty at the time, shot himself in the hand whilst he was fighting with the suspect,” he said.

During the scuffle, more shots were fired and the suspect was shot in the thigh. “The suspect

died on his way to hospital and a policeman was admitted to the provincial hospital in Polok-wane,” said Mulaudzi.

He said that cases of attempted robbery and murder were being investigated by the independent police investigative directorate (IPID).

The dead man is alleged to have been involved in numer-ous cases of housebreaking, rhino poaching and robberies at businesses. Siloam police have confirmed that the suspect was sought for questioning about 51 other crimes committed in the country and nine cases relating to robberies.

Renowned academic and the vice-chancellor of the University of Venda, Prof Peter Mbati, was honoured by the Black Management Forum (BMF) last Friday.

A dinner in his honour was held at the Khoroni Hotel.

The event was attended by, among others, South African Football Association boss Mr Kirsten Nematandani, academics, the BMF president, Mr Sam Maloka, and other guests.

In bestowing the honour on Mbati, Maloka said his organisation took the decision to honour Mbati for his managing and leading the University of Venda. “Among others, Prof Mbati managed the

university well and made it stable with a clear focus and commitment to the core business of teaching, learning, and research and community engage-ment. He ensured that the university developed an institutional culture and ethos that catapulted it to be a quality-driven, financially sustainable, comprehensive university,” he added.

Being honoured this way, Mbati is now in the running for the national awards in October 2013.

Mbati said it was humbling to have been hon-oured in that fashion. “There are many people out there in the background who worked hard for this honour. I am just here representing them from staff, council, students and the management

of the university. The achievements were a result of team work and not individual effort,” he said.

In congratulating Mbati, the chairperson of the Univen Council, Ms Shirley Mabusela, said the honour could not have gone to a more deserving person than Mbati. “This is a fit-ting honour. Looking at Mbati’s efficiency, how he does his work and the way he collaborates with others, makes him the right person for such an honour,” she said.

Dangers of forest fires in the spotlightIn a move to create forest fire awareness among the youth in the Vhembe district, the Komatiland Forests invited schools to enter a competition in different categories such as drama, poetry, visual art and creative writing under the theme “Veld and Forest Fires”.

A large number of schools entered and the Ko-matiland Forests and other corporate growers also visited all these schools prior to the competition event, which was held at Entabeni Plantation a fortnight ago.

“The knowledge that our pupils got during the competition will help them understand the danger of veld and forest fires.”

During the event, the Makhado Fire Protection Association awarded 14 community members certificates for combating fires at Entabeni Plan-tation, Thathe Vondo, during 2012 fire season. At least nine people came from the Tshitangani village and five were from Murangoni village.

Refurbishment for local school with leaking roof

Coal of Africa unveils Makhado feasibility study

Primary school pupils forced to use the bushes

“The newspapers had to publicise our outcry about a leaking roof, before the department would lis-ten to our cries and pleas for the refurbishment of the school,” said a teacher at Jaji Secondary School in Madobi village near Giyani.

Limpopo Mirror recently visited the school to do a follow-up on an article we carried on 25 January about the school’s roof, which had been leaking for 17 years.

Workers were doing the final touches on an entirely new roof. Some were busy putting up the ceiling in all eight classrooms, while others were fi tting pipes to walls for electric wiring. Two boreholes were drilled but, unfortunately, no water was found. Standard toilet blocks were also constructed.

“This is a true change!” a teacher exclaimed. “But we are marking the pupils’ exam papers inside the small food storeroom, where all of us are crammed together with food. They should have provided the school with mobile classrooms for tempo-rary relief while workers continue to fi x the roof and paint the walls.”

exams in two unfi nished classrooms. Then, pupils had to use umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain, which literally poured down from the leaking roof.

They also took turns to mop the water when the dam became too large in the classroom. At the time, pupils had become skeptical that the school’s roof would ever be fixed, with one pupil asking: “Do you think that your coming here and snapping our pictures will change the situation for the better? I doubt it.”

Now, change is taking place and the school governing body is relieved and hopeful that the refur-bishment will create an environment which is suitable for learning. “Even though the contractors or depart-ment is not communicating anything to us, we are happy and know that our children will now have good place for classrooms,” said SGB chairperson Samuel Mathonsi.

Mathonsi told Limpopo Mirror that the water experts were inspect-ing the place to see if they could try to drill a third borehole to try and fi nd water.

Australian mining company Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) has indicated that there is money to be made with reference to their Makhado project.

CoAL published the results of Makha-do’s feasibility study last Wednesday (19th). According to the company, the mine will yield “robust economic re-turns” and, in turn, provide a platform to turn CoAL into a global coking and thermal-coal producer.

But could it be a case of CoAL’s count-ing their chickens before they’ve hatched?

In the very same report, the mining company admits that they are still wait-ing for their mining right and water-use

licence from the Department of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs respectively.

If CoAL had their way, the planned open-cast Makhado mine would produce 2.3 million metric tonnes of coking coal per year and 3.2 million tonnes of thermal coa, from the end of 2016. The possibility exists that the mine could later be expand-ed into an underground mine. CoAL has already started to look for the R4 billion that they will need to build Makhado, which is expected to have a 16-year life span. In anticipation of their mining op-erations, CoAL has also already designed a processing plant to handle all the coal that will be mined.

CoAL chairman David Brown ex-pressed his delight with the outcome of the study. “This high-quality hard coking coal project will not only deliver robust eco-nomic returns but also contribute mean-ingfully to the economic development of the Limpopo Province in South Africa,” said Brown, adding that the “Makhado project represents the future of the compa-ny and is the fi rst step in the development of a major 8 billion-tonne resource across our Soutpansberg coal fi eld”.

“These cracked walls can fall over at any time. Using these toilets is danger-

ous,” one of the children said. A parent, Ms Portia Ramala, said that the children were lucky in that it was not raining. During the rain season, the toilets are fl ooded, forcing the children to relieve themselves in the bush. Heavy rains during January caused extensive damage to the

CoAL had already, in December of last year, signed an agree-ment with a collection of farmers to buy the excess of their water-use rights that they have from the Nzhelele Dam.

The principal of Mukhudwana Primary, Ms Bernard Matumba, refused to com-ment. The spokesperson for the Depart-ment of Education, Mr Pat Kgomo, said that there was a backlog in the department. He said that many schools around the province were running short of classes and toilets. He said that Mukhudwana Primary was on the list of schools waiting for renovation work.

Victim empowerment projects to meet

Freddy Rikhotso in court for murder

All victim empowerment projects operating in Vhembe are invited to attend an important meeting of the VEP sector of the Vhembe Civil Society Network early next month.

The 40-year-old Freddy Rikhotso made his second appearance in the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 June, in connection with the death of his wife at Mahonisi near Elim, on 5 April.

The case against Rikhotso was eventually postponed to 25 July for his docket to be made available in court.

Rikhotso stands accused of killing Ms Lizzy Hlunwane (40) of Mahonisi. The stark naked, lifeless body of Ms Hlungwane was discovered lying on the gravel at the back of the house in her neighbour’s yard on Good Friday this year. The police’s investigations led to the arrest of the deceased’s spouse, Rikhotso.

During his arrest, Rikhotso had allegedly con-fessed to killing Hlunwane in her house a day before the gruesome discovery. His blood-soaked clothes were confiscated by the police for evi-dence. The deceased was allegedly killed inside her house and was then moved to the neighbour’s yard. Her clothes were found covered in blood in the grass where the accused had allegedly hidden them initially.

The family of the accused and the deceased’s family were present at the court.

The compassion of a teacher at Dzindi Primary School brought joy to some of the poor pupils of the school. Ms Caroline Liphapha recently recruited sponsors in Thohoyandou to help the poor pupils. Thomas Chauke to perform in Europe A South African music legend, who has been thrilling crowds in South Africa for more than three decades, will soon per-form in Europe.

Thomas Chauke (61), also known as Xinyori, is expected to perform during different events in France during Sep-tember.

During the recent 19th South African Music Awards event, Chauke received a lifetime achievement award.

Two years ago, he also received an hon-orary doctorate in Af-rican languages for the role he played in the development of the Xit-songa language through music.

His latest album went double platinum in two days. “I was totally stunned when I was in-vited to perform outside South Africa”, he said.

His manager, Phazamisa Matho-si, confi rmed the performances and added that there will also concerts in Britain and several

European countries. “It will depend on availability, because we also want to sell our brand abroad,” said Mathosi.

Communities from the six villages in the Davhana area are up in arms against what they term corrupt and dictatorial rule by the local Davha-na traditional council.

Last Wednesday, villagers arrived at the traditional offices to present grievances to the local traditional leader, Chief David Davhana and his council. Mr Veli Mtileni, one of the community leaders in the area, said the community was fed up with the way things were being run in the vil-lages. He said the council which was running the villages was unconstitu-tional. According to him, the council must consist of 60% members from the traditional leadership, and 40% should be elected from the commu-nity. He said that many undemocratic tendencies had developed in the com-munity, which he said were causing division and delaying development.

"We are shocked by developments at Balanganani village, where a new traditional leader has been installed without the knowledge of the people. There are two structures in the same village. This is very detrimental to development and unity in the village.

One section supports the one ruler and others support the new ruler. This should stop for the sake of progress in our community."

Mtlileni said the latest point of contention was when 32 people who are to work in one of the local forestry projects were employed without fol-lowing the correct procedures. "We have a standing order here that when there are jobs, the different villages choose their own people.

We were shocked to learn that those employed for the project were hand-picked by members of the council without involving the community,” he added.

Thovhele Davhana David Davhana said they have representatives from all the villages who are part of every decision taken by the council. "I know nothing about what they are talking about. In this community we have a way of resolving challenges if there are any and we want to see things going according to procedure. Every-thing is done in a respectful way from bottom to the top. Those with issues is a small group who are leading the village astray," he said.

Revamped Palm Motors ready to serve the public

Palm Motors Filling Station, situated on the corner of Krogh and Malherbe Street, officially reopened its doors on Wednesday (26th June) after they had halted operations on 5 March for the purpose of revamping the business's premises.

The filling station now boasts five pumps and 25 user-friendly nozzles. This only means that more clients can be

served with speedy efficiency. A café, a bottle store and an ATM are also part of their service.

Mr Nardus Barnard, owner and manager at Palm Motors, says that the revamping of the filling station was inevitable after they had started doing business in 1995. He explained that many services in terms of fuel provision had changed over the years and that the number of cars had

grown prodigiously since more and more people have become car owners.

“The upshot of this is that they all need to refuel and make use of our other efficient services, and that's the reason we decided to upgrade our premises,” said Barnard.

“The Delo oil range and the Havoline oil range are the best in their class,” Bar-nard said.

“I am inviting all motorists and drivers to come and have a look."

Rendani Maliaga, a petrol attendant, said that the upgrading of the filling station could not have come at a better time. To her, the filling station environment is one that teaches her the ability to communicate with hundreds of people each day. “Work-ing here feels good to me and, on behalf of the workers, I thank my employers for providing us with work,” she said

There are at least 10 attendants and four cashiers at the moment and Barnard says that the filling station would like to employ more staff in the near future. “This will be part of our ploughing back into the community,” Barnard said.

Barnard wished to extend his gratitude to all clients for their patience and co-op-eration during the revamping of Palm Mo-tors, particularly the Kutama-Sinthumule Taxi Association.

Leopards want to recruit new players

Although the activities for the new soccer season are expected to start in two months’ time, it is already business as usual in the camp of Black Leopards. The team resumed with its normal training sessions on Tuesday, after a recess of a month.

According to the club’s mar-keting manager, Mr Tshifhi-wa Thidiela, their reason for commencing with their normal training sessions two months before the activities of the new season start, is that they wanted the team’s new head coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, to get enough time to prepare the team for the season ahead. Thidiela said that they did not want to be caught

off guard when the new season started. “We do not want to stay in the National First Division for more than one season, before returning to the Absa Premiership Division,” said Thidiela. Lidoda Duvha were relegated to the National First Division at the end of the previous season, after fi nishing their league programme at the bottom of the log. As part of their preparations for the com-ing season, Black Leopards will conduct trials for new players at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Sta-dium in Polokwane this weekend.

Thidiela revealed that they were forced to conduct the trials in order to recruit a reasonable number of players below the age of 23. In terms of the rules and

regulations for the league, all National First Division teams are required to fi eld a minimum of fi ve U/23 players every game.

“These rules do not apply to the Absa Premiership teams and as such we are forced to go all out, searching for the U/23 play-ers,” said Thidiela.

Thidiela further revealed tat they will reduce the number of the players who are above the age of 23 in order to accommo-date the new recruits. He added that they still had more than 30 players, despite the fact that they released three, Rodney Ra-magalela, Tiyani Mabunda and Raymond Monama, to Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago.

Benny’s Care Academy was crowned as the champion of Vhembe during the final of the U/19 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, which was played at Makwarela FNB stadium last Friday. They beat George Ntodeni High 5-0.

On 6 July, Benny’s Care will meet the winners from the other four districts in the provincial fi nal, which will take place at the Giyani Stadium. The winner will later meet the other provincial champions. The Sanlam Kay

Motsepe Schools Cup is an ini-tiative co-funded by Sanlam, the Ubuntu-Botho Community De-velopment Trust and the Motsepe Family Foundation. It is open to all high schools in South Africa.

The national winner will walk away with R1,1 million, and R700 000, R500 000 and R400 000 for the second-, third- and fourth-placed schools re-spectively. Each provincial win-ner will receive an additional R100 000.The coach of Benny’s Care, Mr Justice Matloga, says

the competition is about pride and honour. “This is the fourth consecutive year that we have made it to the national fi nals. It is a statistic we are proud of and we want to keep the tradition going. We want to be the fi rst team in Limpopo to win the tournament,” he said. According to him, his players are very happy about making it to the provincials.

“I hope that they will eventu-ally get good results. The boys are doing their best and we have a good understanding.”

Money for teamsThe teams affiliated to the Safa Vhembe Re-gional Association received their league prizes during a ceremony at Thohoyandou on Sat-urday, 15 June. During the event, 144 teams received their prizes.

Joe’s Express received the largest cheque and took home R20 000 and a floating trophy. United Artists, who finished in the second spot, received R15 000. Mukula Young Santos took home R13 000 while the fourth prize of R11 000 was present-ed to Western Stars.

Teams which finished in the fifth to the ninth position in the promotional playoff round-robin matches, Maweja Takers, Muziafera Blue Eagles, Matsakali Sky Rangers, Tshibvumo Young Stars and Seven United Brothers, were each given R9 000.

The prize-giving ceremony was done in con-junction with the official launching of the new sponsorship for the league. The league will be known as the MMK Funeral Soccer League in future, following a decision by the management of the company to sponsor the league. During the ceremony, the general manager of the company, Mr Thomas Ramuhuyu, handed over a cheque to the value of R300 000 to the president of the association, Mr George Kubayi.

Ramuhunyu indicated that their decision to spon-sor the league was reached after they realized that most of the people which they were burying were youths. “As a responsible company, we felt that we could not just stand aside and look on; instead, we should find a way to develop the youth,” he said.

During the ceremony, the acting chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League, Mr Cam-bridge Mokonyane, stated that before any compa-ny decided to sponsor any association, they first looked at the leadership of that particular associa-tion. He praised the Safa Vhembe Regional League for the excellent management of their finances.

The executive mayor of Vhembe District, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, revealed that his municipality will continue to sponsor the association by way of staging the annual Vhembe Mayoral Tournament. Last year’s tournament was sponsored to the tune of R550 000.

Exactly one year ago, my life changed for the worse, but after the recent PPC Kreme-tart Cycling Tour, it is finaly making sense why some things happen they way they do.

Sometimes, when you lose something, you get something in its place, and that is why I just do not have the words to describe my thanks to our Heavenly Fa-ther and his creations, and that is you. All the people who are in my life.

It is not humanly possible to successfully pull off such a huge event as the PPC Kremetart Cycling Tour, but thanks to the diligent prayers, help and support of the whole Louis Trichardt community, another successful

PPC KRemetart has come to pass. Nowhere in the world is there such a community that is willing to help each other out, without even asking.

The dosens of helpers, my three bosses, even the people whom I have never met, those who were working non-stop for weeks, taking calls, helping with admin, those standing in the sun, taking care of the cyclists, even the public that supported our food stalls and races, thank you so much.

It will really take me a full year to remember each and ev-ery contributor, and then there are those people who helped out whom I didn’t even know about.

Academy to host holiday cricket clinic

The Louis Trichardt Cricket Academy will be hosting a cricket clinic from 2 until 5 July at the cricket fields in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Each day, the clinic will start at 11:00 and end at 15.00, with

the cost being R600 per child and R500 per child for siblings.

The clinic entails 16 hours of cricket coaching, one-on-one attention, batting, bowling and fielding drills, video analyses, live net sessions, pitch practice

and lunch and cool drinks.Please note that only 15 chil-

The SAB League provincial play-offs will be staged at the Jane Furse Stadium in Sekhukhune this weekend.

Teams from the five districts will fight for the two Safa second-division places. The top two teams at the end of the play-offs will be promoted to the second division.

Vhembe District will be represented by Joe’s Ex-press. The teams from the other districts are: Win-ners Park (Mopani), Masokolara FC (Sekhukhune) and Molemole Academy (Capricorn). Waterberg District was still to confirm their overall winner at the time of going to the press.

Each team will play four matches in a round-rob-in format over two days. When asked about their level of readiness for the playoffs, the spokesperson for Joe’s Express, Mr Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, said they were ready for whatever heat they might come across in the play-off. He revealed that they had played a number of friendly matches over the past three weeks as part of their preparations for the two-day event.

Ramphabana further said that all his players were razor sharp. He cited a number of players, including Thembisani Nevhulamba, Dakalo Ratshitanga and the team’s captain, Lenock Mabila, on whom they will pin their hopes during the playoffs.

Vhembe was represented by Tshifhire Northern Brothers during last year’s event, but they failed to

make the grade, despite the fact they were playing in front of their home crowd.

While some village boys and men spend their time at initiation schools this holiday, some have found solace in Musangwe (traditional boxing) tournaments which take place at Ma-konde sports field. This is the sport that has a large following in local circles, “because it separates men from boys”.

The sports field resembled a picnic of fun lovers as men from the local villages battled to find out who the true champion is. The game’s fans travel from as far as Tshivhilwi, Haluvhimbi, Tshaulu and Hamakuya to spend the whole day cheering for the fighters.

says his aim is to keep people off the streets, especially the youth, during the school holiday. He says the game keeps them busy and they end up not thinking about taking part in any criminal activities. “Since we started last week, we had huge turnouts, which show that people are really interested in this sport. This is part of our culture and as Africans, we will continue to pride our-selves on our heritage.”

Ramarada says the main challenge is to get sponsors who will give incentives to fighters. “We are trying our best to engage businesspeople to sponsor us, so that we can reward those who are doing well. We have not received anything so far,

but we call upon those who are willing to as-sist us to do so because what we are doing is part of community de-velopment. Because this sport is played according to specific rules, it enforces disci-pline and fighters learn to respect one another at all times. This is the skill that they can also use in the outside world to relate well with other communi-ty members.” One of the brave fighters is Mvelelo Munyai (18) of Tshivhilwi village, who impresses every-one with his fighting ski l ls . Nicknamed Toyota, Munyai com-mands a large follow-ing whenever he enters the ring. He managed to defeat four oppo-nents in one day and no one wanted to fight him for the remainder of the day.He refutes claims that he uses Thari (muti) and Tshiswiswi (invisibility to the op-ponents). “Those are lies. My only weapon for a good performance is training. I train so hard to make sure that my body remains in shape and this makes me very powerful.”

Kindhearted woman donates shoes to the needyShe was born and grew up in the village and she is well aware of the hardships faced by the community, which is composed mostly of unemployed people.

Ms Takalani Net-shituni of Thohoyandou, who now works as an emergency official, felt she could do something to change the situation faced by disadvantaged pupils who have to brave the winter chill barefoot. Out of her own pocket, she bought 31 pairs of shoes and do-nated them to children at two of the schools she attended. She donated 10 pairs to Ligege Sec-ondary School as well as 21 pairs of shoes and 24 pairs of socks to Ratshiedana Primary School. The shoes were handed over during and event at the school a fortnight ago.

The shoes brought much joy to the pupils, some of whom have never owned shoes. "I was born here and also attended school here. I am familiar with the situation around here. During our time, many of my fellow pupils came to school barefoot. As we were determined to succeed in life, we did not take it as a stumbling block to our goals and indeed we did succeed,” she added. "I felt very touched to see poor kids having to attend classes barefoot and told myself that now that I had the means, I should change their situation around.”

Netshituni. "Poverty is rife in this area as many parents are not working. We are very happy to have a person like Netshituni

who did not forget her roots and came back to make a difference to her brothers and sisters,” she said.

Werda Toyota in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has been named the Toyota Environmental Dealer of the Year.

This award was made to Werda Toyota over a fortnight ago for the 2012 financial year. Werda Toyota received the award after a survey was conducted of all the other dealerships in South Africa.

The award, among others, determines which dealer goes the extra mile in their environmental performances and their actual environmental practices. Something that made them stand out, said Werda service manager Mr Charl Venter, was their various recycling projects.

W e r d a T o y o t a , though not many are aware of it, is setting the trend when it comes to environmental prac-tices. Not only is their service centre immac-ulately clean, they are also very conscious of the environmental legacy that they leave behind. For example, Werda Toyota uses a pollution-control prod-uct called Super Zorb in all the different facets of their service centre. This product is used to

absorb all the harmful products, like oil spills, so that these can be drained later on and sent off to be recycled at the refinery.

Werda Toyota also recycles all their service parts, such as oil and air filters. Metal and paper parts are separated and recycled accordingly. The money that they earn from this recycling is donated to local schools.

The outer part of air filters is also do-nated to a community group who turns them into pot plant holders and sells them for an extra income. The dealership has also recently expanded and is now also

a 2S Hino dealer. Together with three other Toyota dealerships in South Africa, they formed part of a pilot study of Hino SA to ensure Hino services and parts are available.

In June, Werda Hino received the award for being the best overall dealer in the pilot phase of the project.

“Thank you to all our employees for their dedication, hard work and effort. Without them, we would not have received these high honours,” said owner Mr Eddie Schlesinger. Venter also had a special word of thanks for his team’s dedication.

Twenty teams in Rospa Winter games

The quarterfinal matches of the Boy Nemakonde KO Competi-tion were played at the Tshifudi Stadium over the past weekend. Eight teams from Tshaulu and the surrounding villages took part in the competition.

All the teams are affiliated to Stream A of the Thulamela Local Football Association Su-per League. The results of the matches are: Munangwe United Brothers 3, Tshaulu Sports Acad-emy 1; Begwa United 4, Lukalo Hotspurs 2; Duvhuledza Flamin-

go 3, Tshaulu Ghetto Boys 5 and Tshaulu Powerline 6, Dimani Young Masters 1.

Both the semifinal matches final will be staged at the same venue tomorrow (Saturday). Tshaulu Powerlines will meet Tshaulu Ghetto Boys at 08:30. Munangwe United Brothers and Begwa United Brothers will test each other’s strength soon afterwards. The winners in the two matches will meet in the final, which is scheduled to start at 14:30.

The champions of the compe-tition will become R3 000 richer and will also receive a floating trophy, soccer kit and five soccer balls. The runners-up will receive a soccer kit and five soccer balls. The remaining teams will receive consolation prizes of three soccer balls each. The man of the match and top goal scorer of the tourna-ment will each receive a sporting shopping voucher of R600.

A local businessman, Mr Boy Nemakonde, is the sponsor of the competition.

The opening matches of the Rospa Winter Challenge were played at the Vuwani Mandani grounds over the past weekend. The other matches were played during the week, while the final will be staged at the same venue tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

vhungwa Young Fighters, Way-eni Sea Robbers, Madombidzha Arsenal, Mdabula Blue Bulls, Tshakhuma RO United (defend-ing champions), Mahematshena Flying Birds, Gwamasenga Unit-ed Brothers, Sundani City Rovers and the hosts, Rospa United.

The top goal scorer, player of the tournament and the best goalkeeper will also receive trophies. The final is scheduled to start at 15:00.


Home Defenders surprise log leaders

Gogobole Home Defend-ers received maximum points when they beat the log leaders in the Limpopo Dairy League, Ravele Highlanders, 1-0 at Gogobole on Saturday.

Thabelo Tharini, De-fenders' tall striker, was un-lucky to see his shot going a little wide after receiving a beautiful pass from Brigh-ton Phuravhathu in the 17th minute. The Ravele lads came close to scoring when Raymond Thenga forced his way through and released a volley. Keeper Tshimomo Mbambu of Defenders stretched to the limit to palm the ball away.

The home side effected the first change to their original team by introduc-ing Fhatuwani Matshusa for Tshilidzi Mphidi. Matshusa formed a deadly combina-tion with Mulalo Lethole and Piet Ramabulana at the forefront.

Thabo Mudau caught the Highlanders keeper, Hum-bulani Makhado, off guard when he tried his luck from the 35m area. Makhado misjudged the flight of the ball and it landed in the back of the net in the 65th minute. Shortly thereafter, a defender of the Gogobole team, Calvin Ramusheu, was red-carded for kicking an opponent.

Maebane Aces United gave Bucs a day to remember, when they crushed them 6-1 in their Limpopo Dairy League match at the Maebane grounds on Sunday.

Aces started with a bang, scoring two goals within the first 20 minutes. Ado Ramaremela received a pass from Velaphi Mphaphuli and passed the ball to Lebogang Nndwamato, whose ground cutter hit the goal post and crossed the goal line in the fifth minute. Khangwelo Ram-abulana was on target again six

minutes later. Lutendo Ligidima dished a beautiful pass to Khan-gwelo Ramabulana, who gave the ball the final touch.

Mashudu Mbau of Bucs was reprimanded with a card for protesting against the referee’s decision.

The centre half for Aces, Ra-munna Makhokha, went into the referee’s book for obstruction three minutes into the last half.

Dominic Mafuleni scored the only goal for his team when he finished off a square ball from Lutendo Mabasa. Aces went

further ahead when Masala Ra-mashia unleashed a powerful volley after a scramble in the box in the 58th minute.

Norman Shilowa complete his brace in the 70th minute. Mashu-du Nkomo capitalised on the Bucs' clearing error and caught their keeper, Mulalo Maphaha, off guard. Erlyn Nndwambi was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot, but Dominic Mafuleni's kick went wide. The last goal of the day was scored by Tshilidzi Ramabulana.

R10 000 fi ne for Maungani Mighty MastersOne of the affi liates of the Safa Vhembe Regional Soccer League, Maungani Mighty Masters, will not easily forget the day on which they caused the aban-donment of their SAB League match against Tshifulanani Crystal Palace at the Tshifulanani Stadium two months ago.

Mighty Masters were summoned to appear before the league’s disciplinary committee last Saturday to answer seri-ous questions regarding the incident. The team pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing the abandonment of the game, but was found guilty by the committee. Masters were ordered to pay a fi ne of

R10 000 within 30 days. They also for-feited the points of the match to Crystal Palace.

Mukula Young Santos appeared be-fore the same committee last Tuesday to answer to a charge of assaulting a league offi cial. The incident relating to the case took place at the Makwarela Stadium on 9 June, shortly after the end of the game between Joe’s Express and Maweja Takers FC. The committee heard that an offi cial of the league, Mr Mulalo Mafenya, was on his way to his car after the game when he was approached by a huge crowd of the fans of Mukula Young Santos.

The crowd wanted to know from

Mafenya how the result of the match be-tween Joe’s Express and Maweja Takers would affect their standing on the log. Express beat Takers 6-2 and Mafenya told them that the result meant that Joe’s Express were on top of the play-off log, by virtue of a better goal difference.

The committee further heard that one of the fans hit Mr Mafenya with his fi sts. Mafenya reported the matter to the police after receiving treatment at the Tshilidzini Hospital. Santos were found guilty and were ordered to pay a fi ne of R5 000, half of which was suspended for a period of 12 months. The amount of R2 500 is payable within 30 days.

Rospa United on topRospa United booked a place in the next stage of the Rospa Winter Challenge by beating Sundani City Rovers 2-0 in their opening match at the Vuwani Mandani grounds on Sunday.

As if they were campaigning in the same division, City Rovers managed to match their elder brothers pound for pound in all departments. The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, fl ashed the fi rst yellow card in the 14th minute. Azwi Mulaudzi of City Rovers tack-led Oscar Silima from behind and that was reason enough for the referee to reprimand him with a yellow.

No goals were scored in the fi rst half. Things turned against City Rov-ers after United introduced three new faces early in the second half. United

replaced Justice Mabunda, Bongani Mthombeni and Adolph Nkhumane with Mmbengeni Mahosi, Marks Munyai and Ndumeliso Mabulele respectively.

City Rovers committed suicide by abandoning their original playing pattern and started to set offside traps. It worked against them as they conceded the fi rst goal a few moments later. Pfunzo Dzuguda beat the offside trap and scored easily.

City Rovers responded by introduc-ing Ntingeni Mudau and Vuledzani Mashadzha for Zwivhuya Ndwammbi and Awelani Ngwana in the 76th minute. That was not good enough to stop Rospa, who scored the second via Marks Munyai six minutes before the fi nal whistle.
