Scored for treble chromatic harmonica and piano, SOUND CHINA was commissioned by a

renowned German harmonica soloist, who made a special request for the new work to show

Chinese cultural aspects through a 3-movement suite with contrasting tempos. The composer

has selected the representative “Chinese Opera”, “Jasmine Tea” and “Bamboos” as the

imagery for musical inspiration of each movement. The melody, harmony and rhythms of this

original composition show a new style, particularly unusual for harmonica music, by mixing

the elements, structures and aesthetics of modern classical and traditional Chinese music. This

piece received its World Premiere in Germany in November 2012, with high acclaim from the

Western audience. It has not yet been performed in Hong Kong. The piece is having its

“Asian Premiere” here today at the 48th Speech Day of SGSS.

Overture to “Nabucco” composed by Giuseppe Verdi

Verdi wrote his third opera, Nabucco in 1842. The story takes places in ancient Babylon,

where King Nebuchadnezzar (or Nabucco in Italian) holds Hebrew slaves in bondage. The

overture presents several main melodies taken from the opera, among which the famous

hymn-like melody of the Chorus of Hebrew Slaves forms the middle section. The great

success of Nabucco proclaimed Verdi a new hero of Italian opera.

《羅漢戲獅》董榕森作曲

董榕森是著名國樂大師，出生於浙江紹興，後移居台灣，畢生致力推廣音樂教育，對國

樂的創作以及傳統音樂的傳承，貢獻良多。董榕森在 1971 年創立「台灣藝術專科學校

國樂科」，1986 年參與籌創「中國民族音樂資料館」，1993 年榮膺「20 世紀華人音樂經

典」獲獎作曲家。《羅漢戲獅》是一首典型的喜慶音樂，透過熱鬧滾滾的鑼鼓和吹打樂，

點綴佳節的歡欣，傳遞每年農曆春節，華人歡天喜地的節慶氣氛。

Miracles composed by Sally DeFord

Sally DeFord is a prolific American composer with works featured in church magazines. She

has received numerous music awards for her compositions and arrangements. Through her

well received songs, she aims to reach out to people’s hearts and bring them comfort, a

greater understanding, a warmer love for others, and a deeper testimony of Jesus Christ. In

Miracles, DeFord urges us to direct the charitable feelings within us, and to apply our

energies to serve people in need. Instead of wishing for a miracle to take away the many

misfortunes and sorrows in the world, we can change the world by learning to love and serve

those who come within our reach, for miracles begin that way.
