Eight months ago, a littlesoaking wet black puppycame crawling over to me

as I was putting quarters in a pooltable. How could I say no andshove him back out the door afterhe trustedme? He would havesurely been squashed on the roadby morning.

I gave up my game and wenthome with him, with intentions offinding his owners who were sure-ly missing him. What a cutie.

He rode in the front seat, not

panicking but scared. He then hadthe scary experience of meetingmy four brats, one at a time, whenwe got home. They all loved him, particularly my bouncy Wolfie, who welcomed a play partner.

After "Found" posters werehung, an ad placed in the paper, and a feature on this Pet Carepage, only one lady called abouthim. She was sure he was their's.He looked just like their puppywho "only ran off once in awhile."Evidently, he was let off his chain"every once in awhile" and who

could blame him for running?!She didn't show up to see him, andI was thankful for that. Eventhough five was a crowd, it wasmuch better than sending a sweetlittle puppy to live back on a chainfor the rest of his life.

It didn't take many walks downthe lane to realize Little Man was-n't a little black lab puppy.Springtime out in the countrymeans many rabbits. To Little

Man, that was heaven. The hunt-ing, the baying, the selective hear-ing started. I remember one daythe four dogs and I just sat downin the middle of the lane waitingfor the little brat to come back. Ona leash he went after that. No morerabbit hunting, no more worryingthe foster mommy.

Little Man was neutered andgot all his shots. He fell in lovewith my pack and they and I fellin love with him. After so manymonths, I began getting the ques-tion, "Aren't you too attached tohim to adopt him out?" Theanswer to that is bittersweet ... yes,I was very attached to him but hewasn't quite the perfect fit for ourfamily, and most importantly, when you let a foster go, you open

that spot back up for another

homeless pup. He was my firstfoster, and if I'd failed with himand kept him, I would have alwaysfelt I failed at my first "try."

I didn't fail. The story has thehappiest ending ever.

One of my good friends inNorth Carolina had courtesy post-ed Little Man on her rescue's Website just to get him out there wherethe world could see him. It just sohappened that a family in North

Carolina came across Little Man... it seemed like fate ... they calltheir little boy "Little Man" andthe name had caught their eye.

My friend went to visit thefamily's home and was veryimpressed with their intentions andcommitment. She assured me Iwould love them.

So on my birthday two week-ends ago, I made the long trip toNorth Carolina with Little Manright next to me. It was a hard trip, not because of the driving, butbecause I knew I wouldn't be com-ing back with him.

The next day, we arrived at thefamily's house, and I was com-pletely taken aback at how perfectthey were. Little Man already hada stocking hung with his name on

it and an ID tag for his collar.

Despite all his "beagle investigat-ing" he managed to give quick hel-los to his new furbrother Baileyand his new human brother Austin.By the time we left, after a familypicture was taken, Little Man wasin his new daddy's arms, so com-fortable that he looked like hewould nod off.

It was one of the hardest butone of the happiest moments I'veever had walking out that door.

Little Man was home.I encourage anyone who has an"open spot" to consider fostering ahomeless pet. You can give themthe security, the training, and thesocial skills that will help themfind a home just for them. Thereare adoption agencies close to youwho are in need of foster families. Please consider helping.
