Founded in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra, Mission San Buenaventura was named after Saint Bonaventure,

whose name, translated from Italian, means “good fortune.” The city of San Buenaventura, which surrounds the mission, had its moniker unofficially shortened to Ventura in 1891, and the county of Ventura began in 1873, when it separated from neighboring Santa Barbara County.

Despite the abbreviated name, residents of Ventura County still find themselves very fortunate to live in a portion of Southern California consisting of scenic vistas, temperate climates and year-round activities. From the mountains to the ocean, with a highway that was made famous in a 1972 song, Ventura County is the jewel of the Golden State.

With over 835,000 citizens living on more than 1,800 square miles, the cities in Ventura County each have their own distinct attributes, such as variations in topography, architectural styles, and much anticipated annual events. Incorporated cities include Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Ventura. Census-designated regions are listed as Bardsdale, Buckhorn, Casitas Springs, Dulah, Faria, Lo Conchita, Mussel Shoals, Newbury Park, Point Mugu, Sea Cliff, Somis and Upper Ojai, and unincorporated areas are Bell Canyon, Casa Conejo, Channel Islands Beach, El Rio, Lake Sherwood, Meiners Oaks, Mira Monte, Oak Park, Santa Rosa Valley, Santa Susana and Saticoy.

While countywide virtues come together at the exciting yearly Ventura County Fair, which began in 1875, every city has activities, flea markets, restaurants, shops, and landmarks that are sure to entice Ventura County residents and visitors. Just a few examples: The city of Ventura offers the thrill of adventure with helicopter rides and sailing charters; Camarillo is home to the Adolfo Camarillo Ranch House, and Camarillo Premium Outlets; Simi Valley has the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, and Strathearn Historical Park and Museum; Fillmore honors the railroad with its Fillmore & Western Railway; and Santa Paula is a bastion of culture with its Santa

Paula Art Museum, California Oil Museum, and The Aviation Museum of Santa Paula.

Even with modern amenities and conveniences such as automobile dealerships, hospitals, shopping centers, and fine dining all within driving, biking or walking distance, Ventura County’s heritage, rich in historical significance, is still celebrated.

The San Buenaventura Mission thrives long after its founding 231 years ago, and is carefully maintained, welcoming visitors every day, except major holidays.

Trains as a mode of transportation are a daily occurrence with the contemporary Metrolink line, but there was a time when the railroad was an innovation, allowing lumber to be brought in for the building of homes and stores, and produce to be shipped out. With the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1887, from Saugus to Santa Paula, the county began to flourish. The historian James Miller Guinn wrote in his 1902 book Historical and Biographical Record of Southern California: “In 1875 Santa Paula contained two hotels, two stores, two saloons, a postoffice (sic)

and a flouring mill half a mile above the business center. The discovery of petroleum that year in Santa Paula cañon (sic) greatly accelerated its growth. It experienced another boom in 1887 when the railroad was built through town.”

During the same era, Oxnard, named for Henry T. Oxnard, president of the American Beet Sugar Company, was on its way to becoming an agricultural mecca. Henry Oxnard likely wouldn’t have imagined that, more than a century later, in the 2012 Crop & Livestock report, the Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner would show a combined “crop grouping value” of $1,963,798,000 for fruits and nuts, vegetables, nursery stock, cut flowers, livestock and poultry, apiary products, sustainable agriculture, field crops and timber.

In 1932, the very eastern part of Ventura County, the Santa Susana Pass, was used during the road cycling event of the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. 52 years later, Lake Casitas, in Ventura County’s Los Padres National Forest, was the site of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics’ canoeing and rowing

competitions.

Ventura County has several lakes, creeks, and, of course, the Pacific Ocean, but it is also the home of the 83-mile long Santa Clara River, which is one of the only free-flowing river systems to remain unencumbered by concrete channels.

Many famous folks have lived in Ventura County, from the notorious: Elizabeth “Ma” Duncan, who, jealous of her daughter-in-law, had her killed and was convicted of the crime, then in 1962 became the last woman executed in the state of California; to the prolific: Erle Stanley Gardner, a lawyer and author best known for penning the Perry Mason series of mysteries. Industrialist and aviator Howard Hughes attended Thacher School in Ojai, film actor Kevin Costner went to Buena High School in Ventura, and Kaley Cuoco of television’s Big Bang Theory was born in Camarillo.

However, one doesn’t have to be in the limelight to enjoy the many attributes of Ventura County, because living here is its own reward.

Hit the linksVentura County is very golfer-friendly. There are

at least 19 greens in the county, from Simi Valley to Ventura. Golfers can play near the beach in Oxnard, or well inland in Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai or Moorpark. Some of our links are connected to hotels or country

clubs, others are independent. There’s something for every golfer here, and duffers come from all over the state and across the country to partake of their favorite sport in our fair county’s mild climate. Tee off in Ventura County, where scenic surroundings and perfect weather are par for the course. www.venturatoday.net/golfcourses.html

Hike the Hummingbird TrailHuge rock features, unusual caves and giant

boulders make up the topography of the 2.4 mile Hummingbird Trail near Simi Valley. Deemed a moderate hike by LocalHikes.com, it offers hikers views including wildlife, a variety of flowers and vistas

including those all the way to the ocean on clear days. Spring, winter and fall are the best seasons to take the roughly three-hour hike, especially after a rain, when it can be quite breathtaking with small waterfalls. Be sure to bring plenty of water and to dress in layers. The trailhead is adjacent to Highway 118, at the Kuehner Drive exit and 0.3 miles north to the sign on the right. (805) 581-3823

Lake CasitasLocated at the juncture of Casitas Pass Road

and Santa Ana Road near Ojai, Lake Casitas is the Ojai Valley’s center for family fun. Boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking and camping are among the activities offered. Coyote Point Disc Golf Course, a professionally

designed course, is the home of the Coyote Classic Disc Golf Tournament every fall. The Casitas Water Adventure water park, with its meandering Lazy River is open from February through mid-September every year. With more than 400 campsites to choose from, Lake Casitas is an ideal place for a weekend of friends and family fun. 11311 Santa Road, Ojai, 805-649-2233, 805-649-1122

Bowfishing at Lake CasitasBowfishing for carp at Lake Casitas serves a

dual purpose: One, it helps control the population of carp, a fish classified as invasive with few natural predators which can be a detriment to other fish. Two, it’s a unique sport which combines hunting

and fishing. Using bows outfitted with a reel and specially made arrows with fishing line attached, bow fisherman seek out carp in the quiet, shallow coves of the lake. Bowfishing for carp only (no other species) is allowed with a valid Fishing Permit from the Department of Fish and Game all year round at Lake Casitas. 11311 Santa Ana Road, Ventura, 805-649-2233, www.casitaswater.org

California State University, Channel Islands Rock Formations Hike

Offered through the Outdoor Adventures program at California State University, Channel Islands, the

Sycamore Canyon Day Hike is just one of the excursions available for students, faculty, staff and alumni of CSUCI. The 6-mile round trip hike starts at Yerba Buena Road off the Pacific Coast Highway and ends at Sandstone Peak – the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. The stunning views to be enjoyed include Echo Cliffs – a ravine with bold sandstone formations and sheer walls. This excursion promises some of the best rock climbing in the area as well as some of the most awe-inspiring views. 805-437-8902, [email protected]

Electric Boats in Ventura or Channel Islands harbors

For a day on the water without breaking the bank or losing your lunch, consider renting an electric boat to cruise around Ventura or Channel Islands Harbor.

With boats that can hold up to 12 passengers, mom, dad, kids and even grandma and grandpa can enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbor. Highlights on the cruise include seeing the waterfront houses, sailboats, fishing boats, wildlife and even the tall ship the Bill of Rights. Take the family and enjoy a unique view of the harbors. 1603 Anchors Way Drive, Ventura Harbor, www.venturaharbor.com, 3900 Pelican Way, Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, www.channelislandsharbor.org

FILLMOREFillmore calls itself “the last, best small town in Southern California.” This little town in the Heritage Valley has clung to its picturesque, turn-of-the-20th-century character, which accounts for why so many movies and TV shows are filmed here. Many utilize the tracks and trains of the Fillmore & Western Railway, which offers weekly excur-sions and seasonal rides. Fillmore retains a largely agricultural character and also is a hotspot for outdoor recreation; Lake Piru, located just outside the town, is one of Southern California’s most popular freshwater getaways.

Rincon Point for surfersRincon Point, located north of Ventura at the

surfed at Rincon at some point or another. There is plentiful free parking, but not a lot of space for large groups or strolls down a sandy beach. The surf here is great and there are lots of chances to watch other surfers show off their skills. From Highway 101, exit at Bates Road

Pratt TrailLocal bicycling enthusiasts rave about The Pratt

Trail in Ojai. Begin at the trailhead area located off of Signal Street and head north of downtown Ojai. Citrus and avocado groves give way to beautiful mountain scenery as you bike this 4.4 mile trail. Climbing from

the north edge of Ojai to Nordhoff Peak, you can get great views of the Ojai Valley, and on a clear day, a peek at the Channel Islands. Keep in mind that Pratt Trail is narrow, quite steep and somewhat technical. At the lower area, you can hook up with other trails. This area is also a favorite for geocaching activities. www.venturacountytrails.org/TrailMaps/OjaiGridley/AreaTrails.htm

Mount PinosAt 8,831 feet above sea level, the summit of Mount

Pinos is the highest point in Ventura County. Mt. Pinos was once the home of the California condor. Captive breeding programs have reintroduced this fabulous bird back to its native territory. Mt. Pinos is ideal for hiking

as well as a winter snow play area. Cross country ski trails start at the 8,300-foot parking area. This area also is very popular with star gazers, with a walk-in campsite at this level. Mt. Pinos is accessed via Interstate 5 from either Los Angeles or Bakersfield. Take the Frazier Park/Mount Pinos exit. Mt. Pinos Ranger District 661-245-3731

Mugu RockLocated on Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) just

a few miles south of Naval Base Ventura County, Pt. Mugu and six miles north of the Ventura/L.A. County line, Mugu Rock is a local landmark easily recognizable by any who have traveled Highway 1 from Pt. Mugu

to Malibu. Perched on the Pacific Coast, Mugu Rock is a favorite “photo op” for tourists and locals alike, with beautiful sunsets over the ocean providing a dramatic backdrop. The Rock also is a popular spot for area climbers to learn and practice basic climbing technique. On just about any weekend, one can catch a glimpse of a daring climber or two dotting the face of the rock.

Staircase Beach / County Line Beach

At the very northern tip of Leo Carillo State Beach, right off scenic Pacific Coast Highway and a scant .5 miles into Ventura County, Staircase Beach is

named for the steepness of its accessibility. Once you maneuver down to the beach itself, you’ll admire the seclusion and the view. Conversely, County Line Beach is more populated due to its favored status among surfers, sunbathers and swimmers. Still, County Line rates just as high as Staircase among beachgoers who enjoy variety in their coastal day trips. Staircase Beach, parking on 4000 Pacific Coast Highway; County Line Beach, Pacific Coast Highway and Yerba Buena Road

Standup paddleboardingParticipants of this fast-growing sport can be

spotted all along the coasts of Ventura County, standing up on long, sturdy paddleboards and using a paddle to push themselves on the surface of the ocean. Paddleboarding offers a great, full-body

workout while enjoying amazing views of ocean life and the shoreline. Rental shops in Oxnard, Ventura and Malibu can provide visitors with all the gear they need, and lessons are offered for those who just want to give it a try. Some may prefer the calm waters of the Channel Islands and Ventura harbors, while others travel out past the breaking waves along the coast.

Bicyclists and hikers have made Sycamore Canyon Trail a favorite, with varying degrees of challenges. Located in Point Mugu State Park, there are two trailheads with free parking, and either a short hike for the novice, or longer, steeper and more difficult

trails for the more experienced hiker. Make sure to check maps prior to making a trip as some routes are closed to bicyclists. Point Mugu State Park, 9000 West Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, www.venturacountytrails.org/TrailMaps/Sycamore/AreaTrails.htm

Ventura Beach Bike TrailEvery biker from the spandex-wearing speed biker

to the cutest princess on a pink bike with tassels and training wheels can enjoy the Ventura Beach Bike Trail. The easy, beach bike starts at the free, public parking lot at Main Street and Highway 33. From there you

head south towards the coast on the five-mile loop. The trail takes riders past the fairgrounds, Surfers’ Point, the C Street promenade, the pier and San Buenaventura State Beach. At the park, take the loop and head back to finish up a nice afternoon ride by the beach.

Volunteer trail maintenanceSpending a day or more as a volunteer with the

Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency’s Volunteer Trail Work Program is fun and rewarding. If you enjoy hiking, biking or horseback riding in the mountains and canyons of the Conejo Valley, it is these volunteers

who maintain the safe and clean trails. Volunteers participate in an annual trail work day to repair damage from erosion and slides and to keep them from becoming overgrown. There also are several smaller, special trail days held throughout the year as needed.

Main Street and ends at Bryant Street in Ojai. Running parallel to Highway 33, this trail winds its way through Foster Park, Casitas Springs and past Oak View, ending in downtown Ojai. For trail warriors, the many mountain bike trails include Sulphur Mountain Road, Gridley Trail, or for an easier trail ride, Shelf Road in Ojai. www.venturacountytrails.org/TrailMaps

other fireworks that do not shoot into the air can be bought and discharged in the city where visitors are invited to spend the day. Although the fireworks are the main attraction, the city also hosts a car show and chili cookoff. The Fillmore and Western Railway continues its weekend train rides and also has a special Firecracker Train ride at dusk, arriving back in town just in time to see the city’s lavish display. Fourth of July in Fillmore is a great experience for anyone who longs to see the holiday’s “bombs bursting in air’ celebration of days of old. However, just remember, the fireworks you buy in Fillmore — stays and are discharged in Fillmore.

Santa statue off Highway 101Drivers headed up Highway 101 may notice a

strange sight while passing by in Oxnard — a 22-foot-tall Santa Claus stands alongside the road, smiling at commuters year round. Oxnard resident Mike Barber saved Santa from a landfill in 2003 when he wore out

his welcome decades after his installation off Highway 101 near Carpinteria. Barber found a home for Santa on land owned by a small water company he runs. He launched a toy drive for local schoolchildren and employs Santa as a mascot for a charitable half-marathon called Santa to the Sea. Santa is joined by two toy soldiers and a snowman, and Barber constructed a reindeer out of donated rebar and steel this year. Highway 101, just south of Rice Avenue interchange, Oxnard

Silver Strand BeachSilver Strand Beach is a well known favorite of

local surfers and beachgoers. The one mile long sandy beach is great for a stroll or as a quick escape to the coast on a hot day. The beach is relatively isolated and not too crowded, with access only via Victoria Road.

There are two small free parking lots and limited restroom facilities. Enjoy the excellent swimming and waves, but keep in mind that the coastline is a sandy bottom beach break, and there are sometimes rip tides and an undertow. This beach is known for its beautiful island view sunsets, great surf and local surfing crowd. It may be the end of the line, but locals think it’s fine. End of Victoria Avenue, Oxnard

The Waypoint CaféThey say one way to determine if a restaurant is

good is to see if the parking lot is full of cars. At the Waypoint Café, not only is the parking lot full of cars, but just outside the patio, many diners have parked their planes on the tarmac. Hailed as a local secret, the

Waypoint Café offers a unique dining experience. Taking in a lunch on the patio may mean taking a break in the conversation to watch a helicopter take off or a plane taxi by. Mount McCoy crossLocated on the western end of Simi Valley, Mount

McCoy is a familiar sight — a 1,325 foot peak topped with a white cross. From the top of this mountain, magnificent views of Simi Valley, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Channel Islands, Wood

Ranch and Old Boney Mountain can be enjoyed. The tradition of this cross is said to date back some 200 years. The first cross was erected in the 19th century and has been replaced several times in the ensuing years, most recently in 1941 when the Simi Valley/Moorpark Lions Club erected the 12-foot high concrete cross that still stands. With the aid of the Rancho Simi Trail Blazers, the cross and mountaintop on which it stands are accessible by a well-constructed new foot path. ONE OF A KINDBottle Village

From 1956 to 1981, Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey transformed her rural one-third-acre lot in Simi Valley into a whimsical wonderland fashioned from bottles and other found items gleaned in her regular excursions to the dump. Piece by piece, Grandma

Prisbrey constructed an assemblage of shrines, wishing wells and mosaic walkways, using discarded bottles, doll heads and car parts, all arranged in imaginative designs. Sadly, the 1994 Northridge earthquake caused considerable damage to it. Today, Preserve Bottle Village, a nonprofit organization, works to restore this privately owned historic property. Tours of Bottle Village are by appointment only. 4595 Cochran St., Simi Valley, 805-584-3432, www.bottlevillage.com, Like it on Facebook at facebook.com/Bottle Village in Simi Valley

Four Seasons HotelImagine yourself wrapped in a plush towel,

breathing in eucalyptus-scented steam. Or having a massage. Or perhaps soaking in a whirlpool. How about lounging poolside in your own cabana? All of this and more can come true at the Four Seasons

Hotel in Westlake Village. You can unwind after a tough week, treat yourself after a day of shopping or spend some quality time relaxing with your significant other or a group of friends. After your spa treatments, why not take a yoga or healthy-cooking class, or even try some hypnotherapy? The spa at the Four Seasons was voted one of the best in America by Conde-Nast Traveler. 2 Dole Drive, Westlake Village, 805-575-3000, www.fourseasons.com/westlakevillage

Fourth of July Pushem Pullem parade

The world is run by adults, but once a year in Downtown Ventura, kids get to be front and center. Ventura’s Fourth of July parade is what’s known as a

pushem pullem: kids ride in wagons, strollers or other conveyances and mom and dad push or pull. It’s a simple concept that harks back to a simpler time, and it’s an annual Ventura favorite. After the parade, which starts at Cemetery Park and works its way downhill, there’s a Fourth of July festival on Main Street, featuring arts and crafts, local vendors, music and food. Main St., Ventura, www.cityofventura.net/streetfairs

Gardens of the WorldGardens of the World is a cultural landmark that

has themed gardens, including Japanese, French, English, Mission and Bandstand, an authentic recreation of an American bandstand. Choose from a docent-guided tour or a self-guided one. Gardens

of the World also hosts special events such as art exhibits and bonsai demonstrations and free concerts during the summer. 2001 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks, 805-557-1135, www.gardensoftheworld.info

Visit some place hauntedThere are several places to find paranormal activity.

For a good haunting, visit the Olivas Adobe in Ventura and watch out for the Lady in Black. Also in Ventura, the city hall building has had many reported sightings of ghosts. Maybe the most famous is Ma Duncan, who

was tried and convicted of murdering her daughter-in-law there when the building was a courthouse in 1958. She and other spirits have been seen wandering the halls. In Ojai, the Nordhoff cemetery and creek road are said to be haunted. The Charman is said to visit creek road at night.

La Jenelle: Shipwreck-Turned-PierIn 1970, just off the coast of Port Hueneme, La

Jenelle — a once-proud, luxury ocean liner — crashed on the shore after being washed from a nearby port during a storm. The broken and abandoned 467-foot liner became quite the attraction for beachgoers

and surfers, and still attracts attention to this day, though now it now has been repurposed and filled in with rocks and sand. The transformation began in 1972 when Ventura County officials purchased the wreckage and used it as the foundation for what is now a pier located at the south end of Silver Strand Beach. Somis Nut HouseBeing a family-owned and operated business for

more than 50 years, the Somis Nut House is a one-stop shop for nuts, candies, dried fruit, and much more. Though its exterior may not seem like much, once inside, visitors find many a nutty good treasure. The

owners tend to keep things a bit more old-fashioned, occasionally dealing with an online order here and there, when it comes to dealing with customers and running the business it’s good old customer service. If you ever find yourself driving along Los Angeles Avenue, hungry and looking for a snack, head on down to the Somis Nut House. Buy/pick your own strawberriesOne of the best things about living in Ventura

county is its No. 1 crop strawberries. In fact, the Oxnard Plain is the second highest strawberry producing area in the state. When in season from March to July strawberries are the forefront of any number of

roadside stands and markets. Farms throughout the county also offer visitors the experience to pick their own strawberries. Young and old enjoy the thrill of finding the red juicy fruit among the rows of plants and get a better appreciation of those who pick them for a living.
