Summer Sunday School...Why Go? Summer Sunday School at Prince of Peace has begun. All children, K3 - Grade 1, are invited to attend. As
discussed in the article below, it is important that we foster an interest in learning about God during these formative years. Please consider having your children join us...no registration required.
Why a Parish Early Childhood Program Is So Important
By Margaret DeMatteo (courtesy of Our Sunday Visitor)
Learning the Language of Faith
The rate of development in the first five years surpasses that of any phase of life; rapid expansion of vocabulary is just one
part. We can lay the most important of foundations, that of a loving and trusting relationship with God; the kind of foundation Jesus talks about in the Parable of Two Builders (Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49)
Expanding Horizons In addition to everything that is happening cognitively with the brain, the physical, social, and emotional skills of the
preschool-kindergarten age child are exploding. His/her interest and ability to sing, dance, and engage in pretend play and dramatizations are modes that lend themselves so naturally to faith learning.
Christ’s Call to Welcome and Love
At Baptism parents pledge to guide and form their children in the ‘practice of the faith.’ As parishes, we promise to support them in that undertaking. Providing a quality early childhood program is an extension of this. It also ties into our call to
hospitality as a Church. Margaret DeMatteo has a M.A. in Teaching. She has facilitated early childhood programs in various parishes and taught in Catholic schools across the country.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call Many years ago a parishioner, a former choir member, made an effort to become personally involved with the families of fellow choir members in order to get to know them better. She sent birthday and sympathy cards, cooked and delivered meals for those who were ill, baked goodies for Christmas and gave the children small gifts. There were times also when she was a prayer sponsor for First Communicants and a sponsor for Confirmation Candidates. Over time she felt like an extended family member to all. Now, many years later, she still keeps in touch and continues her many acts of hospitality, most recently by sending Mother’s Day cards and visiting the elderly.
Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.
On Sunday, June 8, a group from Prince of Peace will serve lunch to the needy at the
Church of the Reconciler. Volunteers are needed to provide food and desserts and help
serve the meal on that Sunday. If you would like to help with this ministry, please call
Cheryl Walker at 205.949.2907 or 205.540.7691.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24) Over the Line
Calls to “secure the border” are a nearly constant refrain in the immigrations debate in the United States. Less discussed, but more consequential for the roughly 11.7 million undocumented immigrants already living in this country, is how the disappearing border between immigration and law enforcement agencies has contributed to an unprecedented number of deportations (since 2008) - almost two million so far, about 1,000 per day. … Most disturbing is the way in which some of these deportations occur. Migrants are frequently separated from loved ones and dropped off in dangerous border towns at night, where, stranded without money, documents or personal belongings, they make easy prey for drug and human traffickers. Thomas H. Smolich, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of the United States, recently called on the administration “to immediately enact simple deportation safeguards to protect migrant lives.” We join that call. The protection of human dignity knows no borders. (America, Mar 31, 2014)
For more information on the Seamless Garment Ministry, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.
