Sun and shadeThe sun is the centre of our solar system and the largest body in it. Our planet circles it and its orbit determines the passage of time on Earth, the days, the changes in season, the years, etc.

For humanity, the sun is the greatest source of energy and life. It contributes to the growth of living beings, as with the process of photosynthesis in the case of plants, and provides most people with vitality, energy and optimism. A clear example of this can be found in the prevalence of tourism in areas known for sunshine. But sometimes the sun can be overwhelming, and people need to be protected from it. The intense heat in the summer months, harmful ultra-violet radiation, the sometimes blinding glare … these are the things that have driven us to search for solutions to help remedy these negative aspects of the sun and sunlight. Living creatures protect themselves by finding, or even creating, places with shade. This need for shaded places that protect us from the sun and thus provide for our day-to-day well-being has led to the creation of a major sector of the economy specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of products that protect us from the sun.

Solar protection today: well-being and quality From the outset, the solar protection sector has played a key role in forging the way ahead. Today, the need for shaded places to protect ourselves is inherently linked to the quest for well-being and quality of life. This is why installing an awning not only responds to the need for protection, but is also a way of providing comfort and convenience and of creating new usable spaces outside the home.

The sun plays a key role in the process of photosynthesis used by plants. Thanks to sunlight, plants are able to convert substances drawn from the Earth into food.

Llaza France has 5.000m2 at it seat in Perpignan.

Basic function: providing shadeThe basic function of an awning is to provide shade and effective pro-tection from the sun. Comparative studies have shown that using an awning as a solar protection system:

• reduces the solar thermal energy and ra-diation that reach the interior of the home by up to 80%.• prevents excessive consumption by air con-ditioners, providing sig-nificant energy savings by streamlining efficien-cy – making the awning actually pay for itself. • promotes economy and contributes towards reducing environmental pollu-tion through reduced CO2 emissions.

Other value-added functions

Llaza systems are made in accordance with the highest quality standards: using high-quality components and ensuring quality in each phase of production. This is plainly visible in the result: solar protection products which, in addition to fulfilling their basic function, provide benefits which contribute towards our well-being.

3 What is an awning made of?

A LLAZA-SPLENBOX SYSTEM

The cassette awnings featuring the most advanced technology and design

The shapes in the Splenbox range are inspired by nature itself. Its design and technology offer the perfect balance between efficiency, strength, lightness and elegance. Its design in metal allows for a single-colour finish to give an impeccable

appearance of great aesthetic value and high quality. Its features and capacity allow for dimensions able to cover areas of up to 6 m in width x 4 m in projection with just one set of arms.

B LLAZA-MATIC SYSTEM

The aesthetic and technological solution for contemporary architecture

Contemporary architecture, with its sharp, straight shapes, poses a challenge when it comes to fitting features into the façade. The Matic range, designed with a view to the needs of professional prescribers, is the ideal solution to use on buildings of this kind. The cassettes in the Matic range are also a technological landmark as they feature a self-positioning system to set the slope during each operation, allowing the whole mechanism to be housed in a smaller space.

C LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM

Innovative awnings with spherical forms

This is the most innovative product range in the solar protection sector, one featuring ground-breaking, meticulously designed, cutting-edge systems

using the most advanced technology in order to obtain an awning with great functionality: better protection, durability, aesthetic qualities, etc.

The arms of the awnings in this range use the LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM, a tension transmission system that provides greater strength and durability to the arms and keeps the fabric taut, so the awning remains in impeccable condition for a long time.

D LLAZA-BOX SYSTEM

Self-protecting awnings

Self-protection is the trait that distinguishes the BOX range. These awnings stand out from the rest in that they provide excellent quality and increased durability because the cassette protects the fabric and the system when retracted.

Its elegant design features aerodynamic lines that conceal the mechanical mounting elements and help it to blend in with the most distinguished settings. The system can be mounted in different ways and comes in a wide variety of models.

The Storbox and Maxibox systems benefit from the strength and dura-bility of ART invisible arms and the in-ternal LLAZA-ART tensioning system.

G LLAZA-ELIT SYSTEM

Flat awnings for terraces and gardens

The LLAZA-ELIT system opens up a world of outdoor solar possibilities, making this the most effective way to create new spaces outside of the home. Thanks to its great versatility, it can be used to create flat awnings, square or rectangular gazebos and exotic oriental-style pagodas. All of the awnings in the ELIT range can be complemented with

Elit Vertical, which gives the system improved protection and privacy.

Awnings for outdoor enclosures

The Verastor-08 provides protection from the sun, insulation from the heat and authentic comfort.

H LLAZA-SCREEN SYSTEM

High-tech solar protection

These high-tech solar protection systems are right in step with the latest trends and can adapt aesthetically to any setting or style. They are an excellent decorative element and offer numerous advantages: privacy, control of views, energy savings, etc. In addition to providing an effective way of controlling the amount of sunlight entering the home, this range can be complimented with motorised or smart systems to make life that much easier.

E LLAZA-ART SYSTEM

Awnings with invisible arms

The ART range brings invis-ible arms to awnings, creat-ing a classic product that constantly reinvents itself. This range provides the ideal solution both from a technical and an aesthetic perspective. It also keeps the awning’s fabric from touching the elbow joints of the arms when the awning is opened or closed.

The awnings in this range have all the benefits of the LLAZA-ART system, an exclusive arm tensioning system which extends the useful life of the awning.

The invisible arm system is complemented by different types of brackets for improved application and adaptation to different settings, allowing for several different

mounting options.

In addition to its technical features, the invisible arm system continues to be a benchmark in design for its soft, rounded curves which conceal the assembly and mounting mechanisms while providing outstanding strength and exceptional beauty.

F LLAZA-BASIC SYSTEM

The most basic awnings

The BASIC range includes four awning systems: Stor, PR, PRT ART and E-1002. They are ideal for windows and small balconies.

When light hits a surface, whether glass or fabric, the irradiated energy has three effects. These three effects are:

REFLECTION Solar energy reflected towards the exterior by the fabric.ABSORPTION Solar energy absorbed by the fabric which is then irradiated as heat.TRANSMISSION Solar energy which passes through the fabric and is transmitted to the room.

The percentage of reflected light is lower with darker colours, but they ab-sorb more solar energy. Lighter colours reflect more of the sun’s radiation, while dark colours may increase ambient temperature in summer, since the radiation it absorbs is passed on to the room in the form of heat.

The fabric that provides shade

Another basic element of an awning is the fabric. The selection of a fabric should not be based solely on its colour and pattern. It is important to know how to choose the right fabric as its different qualities in terms of material, density and the technology used to manufacture it all affect the degree of solar protection that the fabric provides. When choosing a fabric please consider the following:• The conditions which the fabric will be subjected to; choosing the right fabric will help extend the lifespan of the awning.• Transmission of light. • The degree of solar radiation protection required.

Transmission of light The transmission of light with a solar protection system is primarily deter-mined by three factors: • The density of the material (fabric).• The thickness of the cloth.• The colour.

REFLECTION

ABSORPTION

TRANSMISSION

Solar radiation and its effectsToday, protection from solar radiation has become a necessary part of protecting our quality of life. Depending on the wavelength of the solar rays, we receive infrared rays, visible rays and ultraviolet rays, and each has its own characteristic effects. Fabrics can provide different degrees of protection according to their density, composition, colour … all of this determines the fabric’s effectiveness for different types of solar rays.

What material should the awning fabric be made of?

• ACRYLIC FABRIC

- Acrylic frabric is more effective and long-lasting.

- Mass pigmentation provides very solid colours that hold the original tone for a very long time.

- This material reduces the adherence of pollutants.

- It allows air to pass through, but not water (if atmospheric conditions are not extreme).

- It is non-toxic and non- polluting.

• PVC FABRIC

- The primary feature of PVC fabric is that it is completely waterproof, making it ideal for awn-ings exposed to wet con-ditions.

- It is very resistant to tearing and fraying.

- Some PVC fabrics can be treated for fire-resistance.

TYPES OF RAYS PROTECTION

Sensation of heat

Infrared rays(49% of solar energy)

• The fabrics that provide the best protection against heat are micro-aerated.

• Light colours provide better protection against infrared rays.

Temperature reduction of 20% to 50%

Glare

Visible rays(43% of solar energy)

• Fabric can reduce glare (although there is no way to provide total protection from this effect).

• Dark coloured fabrics provide better protection against glare.

Glare reduction

Cellular damage

Ultra-violet rays (UV)(7% of solar energy)

• The level of protection varies depending on the type of material and its density. Denser fabrics provide better protection from these rays.

• Dark materials provide better protection.

Up to 90% reduction in UV rays

• TECHNICAL FABRICS

- These are special fabrics created using cutting-edge technology and made of membranous structures which offer multiple advantages.

- These fabrics can be made of polyester and PVC or fibreglass and PVC. - They are very flexible and long-lasting. - They provide excellent thermal insulation, which helps to save energy. - They reduce the level of heat in a room due to their capacity for transpiration,

which lets air pass through.- They provide visual comfort, protecting your eyes from glare while allowing you

to see through them, which helps to prevent the feeling of being closed in. - They come in a wide range of colours which let different amounts of sunlight

through. - There are different fire-resistant treatments available.- The texture of the fabric makes them easy to clean.

• CUSTOMISING

- In addition to the large selection available, awning fabrics can also be customised.

The operation system for opening and closing the awning

The third element of an awning is its operation system. An awning can be operated manually with a hand crank or a motorised or automated system can be installed. Motorised systems provide more precise operation and help to make the most of the awning. We are continuously developing new and stronger awnings with systems that guarantee increased durability and which are able to cover larger areas.

Our motorised awning option has become the system which we recommend most highly because of its functionality, convenience and safety. So, the operation system can be:

Manual• Traditional, with a hand crank and gearbox.• With a spring-driven gearbox and hand crank: the compensating spring mechanism makes it considerably easier to extend and retract the awning.

Motorised

• Standard motors: A traditional motorised system with an inverter. The motor is activated with a button and a cable must be installed between the button and the motor.• Remote control: These motors have built-in radio receivers. This means that no cables need to be installed because the awning is operated using a remote control.

AutomatedAdding a smart system to an awning guarantees durability and increased comfort. A wind, rain and sunlight sensor controls the opening and closing of the awning automatically when it is needed, without the need for supervision. • When the sun is shining: when the intensity of sunlight is above or below a

What is an awning made of?

3

programmed value, the sensor detects this and opens or closes the awning as needed.• When it rains: the automatic system detects precipitation and opens or closes the awning.• When it is windy: if the wind causes the awning to oscillate or move in ways that are potentially harmful, the wind sensor detects this and closes the awning to protect it.

A DESIGNING THE COMPONENTS

The starting point for an awning is the design of the components: the system and its accessories, the fabric and automation.

Research and development and the use of cutting-edge equipment in specialised companies enable us to constantly improve our portfolio of innovative solar protection products, both in terms of aesthetics and technology.

The requirements of the market and the latest architectural trends determine the design of the components that are later used to assemble the awning.

B MANUFACTURING THE PIECES

After the components have been designed and approved, they are manufactured and subjected to exhaustive quality controls: ISO 9001, TÜV, EAA and QUALICOAT.

C PREPARING AND ASSEMBLING A CUSTOM-MADE AWNING

We custom prepare the components and put the awning together according to the awning model and the type and colour of fabric selected. Finally, we install the operating mechanism and prepare the preassembled awning for shipment to its new home.

D INSTALLING THE AWNING

Installation companies position the awnings on buildings, affix them, regulate their angle of inclination, program the motor and automated systems, etc.

THE AWNINGD

The creation of an awning involves four different phases:

How is an awning made?4

E WARNINGS AND MAINTENANCE

The primary purpose of an awning is to provide protection from sunlight and create new spaces. This is why if the system is not automated the awning should be retracted in the event of inclement weather – rain, snow, wind, etc.

You should always check that there is nothing which might interfere with the opening and closing of the awning. Never force the awning. It is advisable to periodically check the condition of the awning with the services of an awning installation company.

Cleaning the awning:

The awning should be vacuumed regularly in order to prevent the build-up of dust. If it needs to be cleaned more thoroughly, use a wet cloth and a small amount of soap (do not use abrasive or chemical products). Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure that you will be able to enjoy your awning for as long as possible.

55

THE WIDTH is the total width of the awning, parallel to the wall from one end to the other.

What is the right width? When determining the width of the awning, we recommend that you do not make it too narrow, as this will render it ineffective in protecting people and the inside of your home from sunlight.

THE PROJECTION is the extension of the awning when it is fully open.

Shaded area: the surface area covered by the awning when it is fully open.

Llaza awning systems can cover up to 60 m2 at once and without obstacles.

When you are choosing a specific awning model the most important factor to consider is functionality, and how the system can be adapted to the requirements of its location and users. First of all it is important to know that the lifespan of an awning is determined by the durability of its components and this in turn depends on their quality. A high-quality system will have a lifespan of about 20 years, and the fabric will last for about 10 years. It is a good idea to take advantage of the characteristics that high-quality products offer. Only these products can guarantee adequate resis-tance to the forces of nature that they will be subject to throughout the year (i.e. humidity, corrosion, solar radiation, etc.).

WEIGHT is important in selecting an awning. You should choose a model with a weight that will not exceed the load-bearing capacity of the wall on which it is to be installed.

DIMENSIONS it is important to choose an awning system with the correct dimensions so that it can be as effective as possible.

B SELF-PROTECTION

Llaza’s high-end awnings employ a self-protection system which protects the fabric and the system itself from the elements, foul weather and pollution when the awning is retracted.

1- Galaxia Weather Covers

The Galaxia weather cover is an accessory for the entire ART product range which protects the awning fabric when it is retracted. The weather cover profiles act as a roof for the awning.

2- The Texpro-System (partial cassette)

The Texpro-System protects the awning fabric completely.

3- Cassette system (BOX range awnings)

Our cassette system provides total protection for the awning, protecting both the fabric and the awning mechanism.

Location is a key factor in selecting the range and model of your awning. Our wide variety of systems means that we offer the perfect awning for every location. There are several factors to bear in mind when selecting the most effective awning to meet your specific needs.

ORIENTATION OF THE SUN Yo should consider that the angle of sunlight entering your home will change depending on the orientation of the sun and the time of day. Having your awning at just the right angle or selecting an awning with an adjustable skirt will help you achieve adequate protection.

MOUNTINGThe mounting of the awning is determined by where you would like to install it, the type of wall, accessibility to the area, etc. There are two – sometimes three – types of mounting: face, ceiling and between walls.

MECHANICAL or CHEMICAL MOUNTING Depending on the characteristics of the location in which you want to put your awning, an installation company can determine what type of mounting will be most effective: mechanical or chemical.

• Mechanical mounting: This is the traditional mounting method that uses bolts to anchor the system to the wall in conjunction with other standard struc-tural elements used for this system.

• Chemical mounting: This type of mounting is ideal for mounting awnings, pergolas, aluminium enclosures, etc. both on solid walls as well as on walls which have cavities (hollow bricks, cement blocks, perforated bricks, thermo-clay, etc.). This type of attachment is done with resins which provide very secure anchoring.

ACCESSIBILITYIt is important to consider whether the installer will be able to access the place where you want to install your awning. It should be free of obstacles.

TYPE OF STRUCTURE OR BRACKETBrackets or structural supports are part of the awning system and are generally part of the system to attach it to the wall.

Each product range has its own support system:

• Brackets for invisible arms (WIN range) • Brackets for invisible arms (ART range)• Brackets for cassettes (BOX range)• Universal brackets, for PR, PRT, ART and Stor awnings (BASIC range) • Brackets for flat awnings (ELIT range)• Brackets for screens (SCREEN range)

D THE TENSION TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

The tension transmission system is found in the arms of the awning. Llaza has designed and patented the most advanced models on the market today: the LLAZA-ART SYSTEM and LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM.

LLAZA-SPLENDOR SYSTEMFor awnings in the SPLENBOX and MATIC ranges

The arms in the Splendor range are designed to ensure that the fabric is kept properly taut at all times, thanks to the self-adapting transmission system. The operation of the joints is precise and efficient, as they have a duplex ball bearing system which is unique on the market. The concealment of all the transmission components in the joint, its metal design and the slimness of the profiles give the Splendor arm range a smart, compact, exclusive look.

LLAZA-ART SYSTEMFor awnings in the ART and BOX ranges

LLAZA-ART SYSTEM arms provide optimal internal transmission of tension. This is done with a flat, flexible belt which makes the awning stronger, more resistant, more durable and more aesthetically pleasing than traditional transmission systems.

The pieces of the arms are assembled before they are sent off to be lacquered in order to protect the joints and to make them more pleasing to the eye. The shape of the arms and their configuration when mounted helps to keep the fabric from rubbing on the elbow joints when the awning is opened or closed.

The use of belt keeps the lacquer on the arms from being rubbed off as commonly happens with cable and chain systems.

LLAZA-WIN SYSTEMFor WIN range awnings

LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM arms are a leap forward in technology. This is apparent in the advanced double-tensioning system, in which the arms maintain constant tension in order to keep the fabric taut at all times, even at intermediate positions between full extension and retraction.

LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM technology provides the system with:

• Greater durability and resistance.

• An optimum distribution of force. With LLAZA-WIN arms the front profile is the same width as the rear profile which means the awning can be extended further.

• Integration of the elbow joint with the other elements of the tension transmission system. This gives the system a cleaner look and a more compact design.

• A refined design, thanks to the rounded shapes of all the pieces of the arm assembly and the lacquering of these after they are assembled.

LLAZA-ART SYSTEM and LLAZA-WIN SYSTEM have been designed, manufactured and patented by LLAZA, SA.

E INTEGRATION IN THE ARCHITECTURAL SETTING

When choosing an awning, purely aesthetic qualities are also decisive. Llaza’s wide range of awning systems means that you’re sure to find an option that suits your location to perfection.

How to choose an awning

5

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF THE HOME Since the awning is going to be part of your home, you should pick a model that fits its style. The operation system and fabric should be in harmony with the architectural style of the façade on which you want to install the awning.

EXTERIOR CARPENTRY Our extensive variety of lacquers will be invaluable when matching the awning to exterior carpentry. In addition to the many different materials and colours available for your fabric, the structural elements can be white, black, burgundy, green, ivory, bronze, aluminium, etc.

SPECIAL FINISHES These are special lacquers that are designed to match your awning to different materials: wood, marble, etc. They will help to completely integrate the awning with its setting.

CROSSED ARMS KIT The same width with much more projection

Description The ART Crossed Arms Kit was designed to complement systems which have limited projections due to width restrictions caused by the space available where the awning is installed. Using a piece which lowers the position of one of the arms by 8 cm, the arms can cross underneath and the awning can be extended farther.

Finishes • Lacquer in accordance with QUALICOAT standards

• Stainless steel screws and bolts

Minimum width with Crossed Arms Kit

Projection 2 arms

The maximum angle of inclination of the arms in the ART Crossed Arms Kit is 45º, any angle exceeding this will cause the arms to hit one another where they intersect. The ART Crossed Arms Kit is always mounted on the left bracket.

The design of the kit is in keeping with the style concepts of the ART RANGE and it enjoys all the benefits of ART System technology.

Technical solar protectionScreen range

Effective light management

What does effective solar protection offer?

- Controls and filters light coming from outside

- Saves energy by reducing the interior temperature, making more efficient use of heating and

air-conditioning systems

- Protects privacy from the exterior: see without being seen

- Opens interior spaces visually to the exterior

- Provides visual comfort

- Controls glare on computer and other types of screens

- Prevents sharp differences and contrasts of light

- Protects property and people from UV rays

- Creates more comfortable and productive settings

- Helps to provide a higher quality of life

- Fits in with the décor of the setting

How are decoration and functionality combined?

Shades have always been an important decorative element. Over time, their use has become

more and more associated with solar protection.

Open spaces, glass surfaces and minimalist decorations require elements which can be

integrated with the environment and provide added value to the project.

The technology used in the

manufacture of new high-tech

fabrics cases made of advanced

materials like polyester, resins,

PVC or fibreglass makes it

easy to provide a setting with

the benefits of solar filtering

while positively contributing

to its décor. What’s more, in

some cases the fabrics can

be treated with fire-retardant

substances to bring them

into compliance with even the

strictest safety standards.

How much light is enough?

A desirable light level in any space

should be between 500 and 1.800 lux*.

Fluctuations in exterior sunlight on a

sunny day can reach levels of 100,000

lux. Without any type of protection, only

glass, the light intensity in the interior of

a room oscillates between 10,000 and

30,000 lux.

This situation can make people feel

uncomfortable in different ways: it can

cause a harsh glare, damage eyesight and

cause the sensation of excessive heat.

It can also damage furniture, causing

colours to fade, and let harmful UV

radiation directly into the room.

*lux: unit of measurement for luminosity or light level. Equivalent to one lumen/m2

Managing interior temperature

The light that enters a space has three effects: reflection, absorption and

transmission. Reflection is the amount of light that is bounced back towards the

exterior, absorption is solar energy taken in by the fabric and irradiated as heat, and

transmission is the energy that passes into the interior of the room in the form of

light. By using high-tech fabrics – depending on their colour and composition – you can

effectively regulate the amount of light and heat that is transmitted.

- Reflection

- Transmission
