There’s something special about ahometown physician; someone

“I wanted to come back home,” Mooresaid. “I saw a need for a podiatrist in myhome area and I am glad to be here.”

She said her patients benefit from heroffice’s central location and convenientappointments.

“I really enjoy seeing patients,” sheadded. “I like that we can get them inquickly and I love meeting and talking topeople from around southern Illinois andbeing able to help them.”

The Center is a full-service podiatristpractice, treating everything fromingrown and infected toenails, bunionsand heal pain to more complex issuesincluding diabetic foot care and ankleproblems. Always, Dr. Moore’s firstconcern is with the patients’ wants andneeds.

“I’m not one to talk patients into things they don’t want to do,” she

explained. “I try to get them the care they need and get them back up and

Plaza Tire Service, Inc.was founded early in 1963by Mr. Vernon “Pee Wee”Rhodes. It was originallyknown as Plaza Car Wash.,at that time doingbusiness strictly as anautomatic car washservice. The business didwell except on rainy days.In order to shore up thecompany’s financial base, the business expandedinto an auto clean-up anddetailing service for localautomobile dealerships.Along with servicing thesevehicles, the companystarted selling tires to the

dealers as they wereneeded.

The operation required aseven day work week, using Sundays to purchaseretreads to be sold to thedealers. After a while aretreader rented part ofthe car wash building, thussharing the rent and givingthe company a convenientsource for tires. One yearlater the retreader metwith financial disaster andPlaza Car Wash, Inc.purchased his operationfrom the bank. A 1964 oneton Chevrolet truck wasincluded as part of the

purchase.This truck was the

beginning of the tirewholesale route business, for which retreads weredistributed outside thelocal area. In 1967 thebusiness startedpurchasing and sellingnew tires. The first brandssold were Gates Rubberand B F Goodrich. Thefirst Dayton Tires werepurchased in 1967 with anopening credit line to thecompany of $10,000.00with a personal guarantee. At that time this amountcould almost buy a trailer-

load of tires.The business continued

to grow and soon thecompany had three routetrucks on the road, a carwash operation in fullswing and the retreadingshop working at night. Itbecame necessary topurchase a tire changer todo local business and itwas mounted on thesidewalk outside of the carwash. All tire changingjobs were done on thestreet using a jack. Due tolocal regulations thesystem for tire changingjobs on the street had to be

halted. At this time achoice had to be madewhether to remain in thecar wash business or to gostrictly with the tires.

On Labor Day 1968, allthe car wash equipmentwas removed from thebuilding and the first PlazaTire Service Center wasopened. A HunterAlignment Machine wasadded but most of thebusiness was tire sales. In1972, a wholesale/retaillocation was started onSouth Kingshighway in St.Louis.

Operations, mainly

wholesale, were opened atColumbia, Mo.,Springfield, Ill. andSpringfield, Mo., in theearly to mid 70’s. Whenfuel prices escalated in1980, the companyrealized the need for retailservice centers. Since thattime, Plaza Tire Service,Inc. has expanded with anaggressive pace to fortyfull service locations thatoperate in 4 states as wellas maintaining a verysuccessful wholesaleoperation. The Companyremains family owned andoperated.

Dr. Christopher Hughes in not youraverage dentist. His concern is not justabout how his patients teeth work, butalso about how they look. It’s a conceptaround which he’s built his entire Herrinpractice around. Even the name HughesDental Arts Centre reflects it.

“I think the name emphasizes theartistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughessaid. “As much as dentistry requiresmedical science and training, it alsorequires skills in artistry and aesthetics.”

That means that patients not only turnto Dr. Hughes and his staff for routinedental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also forimproving their smiles.

“We do cosmetic dentistry. We call itsmile makeovers,” he said.

Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks orother damaged areas of teeth.

Hughes grew up in Herrin and is agraduate of the SIU School of DentalMedicine in Alton. He also has completedadvanced training in aesthetic andreconstructive dentistry and implantdentistry.

“We’re the only office in southernIllinois that does complete implant care,”he said. “We do the implant surgery aswell as make the crown or denture thatfits the implant(s). That makes usunique. In most other settings, you go toone dentist for the surgery and thenanother for the restoration. We do theentire procedure here without an outsidereferral.”

For those patients who are a bitnervous about their trip to the dentist,Hughes also offers intravenous sedation.

“We administer a sedative through anIV,” he explained. “It is ideal for patientsthat want to get dental care done but arefearful. It makes them feel sleepy, relaxedand less anxious.”

Regardless if the care is a routineexamination and cleaning or moreadvanced services, the staff of HughesDental Arts Centre focus on helpingpeople look and feel their best.

“We want people to feel good abouttheir smiles, because that impacts howthey feel about themselves and ultimatelyhas an influence on their lifestyle andtheir confidence.”

PRICELESSOur Price Is Less When Celia Robertson started

House 2 Home Realty three years ago, shenever dreamed the agency would be sosuccessful as quickly as it has been.

Turns out, many home buyer andsellers are looking for a break from highcommissions. In fact, House 2 HomeRealty has saved both sellers and buyersmore than $325,000 in just a few shortmonths.

“When I began my career in real estateat another agency, it didn’t take me longto figure out that I needed to offer clientsother options, especially when it came tocommissions,” Robertson says. “I amwilling to take a cut on the listing side ofthe transaction, which allows the seller tocome down on their asking price. In turn, that makes their home much moremarketable, especially in a verycompetitive market.”

Her realization has worked both for herown agency as well as dozens of satisfiedcustomers.

Headquartered in Energy, House 2Home works with a team of agents, allwith the same approach as Robertson.

Sellers only pay a one-time listing feeand have all of the advantages of sellingtheir own home, yet receive all of thesame benefits as if they were workingwith a commission-based agent. The netresult could be a savings of thousands ofdollars.

Plus, House 2 Home makes sure listingreceive exposure through traditionalmeans such as advertising and homeguides and inclusion on the MultipleListings Service database as well as alisting on the siforsalebyowner.comwebsite. Together, House 2 Home makesit possible for future home buyers andbuyer’s agents to find your listing anddeal with you directly, like in a for sale byowner scenario, except you receiveexpert guidance and advice from theprofessionals at House 2 Home Realty.

It makes for happy buyers and sellerswho save on commissions, and startedwith Robertson’s insight.

“I’m am in this to help people and I willbend over backwards to do it,” she says.“That’s just how I am.”

bar serving food from Southern Illinois ina Southern Illinois atmosphere.

Frank Hiller, Sr., founder and owner ofthe restaurant, said when he opened therestaurant in 1982 there weren’t anyrestaurants in the area that were reallySouthern Illinois themed. Otherrestaurants were similar, but he felt theywere more northern in the way theylooked and the way the food was cooked.

“We choose ‘Flyway’ because of

the waterfowl that come through here, sothat’s how we came up with the name,”he said.

Mississippi Flyway’s menu consists ofsandwiches, steak, fish, pizza andbarbecue, as well as breakfast served onweekend mornings. In addition to dining, customers can catch their favorite sportsteam on one of five televisions or relaxwith friends in the attached game andbilliards area. For some, total health might mean anabsence of illness, but for theprofessionals at Total HealthChiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic inHerrin, the phrase means much more.

When Dr. Kelly Chullen-Hoppers andher staff work to bring “total health” topatients and clients, it means allowingthose individuals to live the life theydesire.

“We really try to look at the patient as awhole to achieve both our medical goalsand to allow them to achieve what theywant to do,” Dr. Chullen-Hoppers said.“Whether it’s wanting to be able to playwith the grandchildren or just being ableto walk around the mall. When they saythey want to achieve something, that’sabsolutely what we try to help them do.”

With that philosophy, the staff at TotalHealth Chiropractic and Acupuncturetakes a “big picture” approach toproviding care through a variety oftreatment strategies and techniques.

“What makes us unique is ourapproach with lots of different options,”

she said. “It’s not cookie-cuttertreatment. We work with the patient tofind the best option in each case.”

Services include chiropracticadjustments and manipulation, therapeutic exercise, massage therapyand acupuncture, a treatment option notoften found in chiropractic offices.

“Acupuncture might be a goodapproach for pain management, althoughit can be used for hundreds ofconditions,” Chullen-Hoppers explained.

She added that while people oftenrelated chiropractic care to conditions ofthe back and spine, treatments are notlimited to that area. Patients come to theclinic for treatments for neck pain, problems with hips, knees, legs or evenwrists.

Treatments also include education anddiscussions of natural solutions tocommon health problems, all of whichcan lead to an improved quality of life, improving the way patients feel andgiving Dr. Chullen-Hoppers a sense ofsatisfaction.
