Since the industrial revolution, engineers have been designingand specifying fasteners and othermechanical parts to assemble andmaintain the equipment used inthe production of their products.

The first use of adhesives, on

the other hand, dates back to B.C., and most advances inadhesive technology have taken place within the past years.

The dictionary defines anadhesive as “a substancecapable of holdingmaterials together bysurface attachment.” Thisis a simple definition formaterials that are usedto replace traditionalmethods of fastening and joining products together, such as rivets, screws,

staples, lock washersand more. As a global leader in the adhesive industry andoriginators of “liquid-locking” technology, Henkel’s Loctite® brand adhesive continues to revolutionize the industry with morethan an innovative line of adhesives. Most recently, Henkel waslisted among the world’s most innovative companies in ,according to Forbes magazine. Henkel offers a total solutionto today’s manufacturing and maintenance challenges.

Henkel Corporation’s familiarLoctite® brand representsthe most complete line ofhigh performance adhesives, sealants, and dispensing/curingsystems available anywhere

from a single supplier. Usedto hold complex machinestogether, Loctite® Products areused to build everything fromautomobiles to dishwashers to tractors, and to the trucks thatdeliver them. Loctite® Products make these machines and innerassemblies less expensive, more reliable and longer lasting.

    OVERALL BENEFITS OF ADHESIVES:

      • Join dissimilar substrates, e.g. plastics,metals, etc.

      • Distribute stresses evenly

      • Fill large gaps

      • Seal, bond, and protect parts

      • Improve cosmetic appearance  • Easily automate manufacturing processes

      • Promote a competitive advantage

      • Improve reliability, quality

      • Reduce overall production costs

Now that you understand the benefits thatLoctite® Products offer, it’s time to help youchoose a viable alternative to mechanicalfastening and joining methods. Introducing...The Adhesive Sourcebook .

This comprehensive guide is designedto simplify the adhesive selection process. Each application area is formatted to provide useful decisiontrees, properties charts, and related dispensing equipmentto provide you with a total solution for evaluation.

    Bonding

    Bonding

    WHY BOND ASSEMBLIES?

The use of adhesives can provide a great alternative to many of theindustry failures we see today. For successful bonding, knowledgeof adhesive methodology is essential. The most frequent causes foradhesive failure do not involve adhesive strength. Rather, they areattributed to inadequate preparation of the substrates and improperadhesive selection. The most important factor in proper adhesive

selection is assessing the environment the adhesive must withstand.Once the environmental factors have been recognized, adhesiveselection becomes more easily defined because other factors – suchas joint design, substrates, load and stress cycles – can oftenbe varied or altered with minor design changes.

    BONDING

Adhesive bonding is a process in which two similar ordissimilar materials are united permanently. Adhesives build“bridges” between the surfaces of substrates to be joined.

ADVANTAGES OF ADHESIVE BONDING COMPAREDTO CONVENTIONAL JOINING METHODS:

      • More uniform stress distribution over the entire bond

face: This has a very positive effect on the static anddynamic strength achieved. Where welding and rivetingresult in localized stress peaks, adhesive bonding achievesuniform distribution and absorption of stress loads.

      • No change in surface and texture of the joinedmaterials: Welding temperatures may change thetexture and, therefore, the mechanical properties ofmaterials. In addition, welding, riveting and boltingall affect the visual appearance of the parts.

      • Weight saving: Adhesives are particular ly popularfor light-weight constructions, where thin-walledparts (wall thickness < 0.5 mm) must be joined.

      • Sealed joints: Adhesives also act as sealants, preventing

loss of pressure or liquids, blocking the penetration ofcondensation water and protecting against corrosion.

      • Joins dissimilar materials and reduces the risk of corrosion:The adhesive forms an insulating film to prevent contactcorrosion when different types of metals are joined. It also acts as electrical and thermal insulator.

Light curing adhesives must beexposed to light of the properwavelength and intensity to cure. The UV and visible light wavelengthsused to cure adhesives comprisesa small portion of the completeelectromagnetic spectrum shown. For the most effective cure, thespectral output of the light sourceused must match the adhesivepattern of light absorption.
