London Thames port , navigable river . River had a major influence in the development of the city. The city was founded on the north bank , and until the eighteenth century there was only one bridge, London Bridge , which helped the city to develop very north of the river. Thames plain was fertile ground for expansion of the city , the few hills ( ex . Parliament Hill , Primrose Hill ) were not significant obstacles .After the fall of the Roman Empire, Londinium was abandoned; west of it appeared in the seventh century Saxon settlement Lundenwic name, place where today is Aldwych. At the beginning of the tenth century the old Roman city was reoccupied. Westminster was originally a separate city, but eventually London and Westminster were integrated and developed together, becoming the largest city of England and the twelfth century and the capital of the kingdom.Between centuries XVI and XX century, London flourished, the capital of the British Empire. Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of the city. Reconstruction lasted over 10 years and was led by Sir Christopher Wren, who, on that occasion, has designed and built many of London's iconic buildings today, as it would be for example Cathedral St. Paul. The city's growth has accelerated in the eighteenth century, so that the Incept 1800s London was the largest city in the world.

BIG BEN Big Ben is the nickname of the great bell of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London North ,. This name used for either the bell and clock tower and even the clock .Big Ben is the largest bell and clock with four faces , and third tallest clock tower in the world. The clock was put into operation on the day of May 31, 1859 .The nearest metro station is Westminster on lines Circle, District and Jubilee .

At Westminster has built a clock tower in 1288. The current tower was erected as part of Charles Barry project to build a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire on the night of October 16, 1834.The new Parliament was built in Gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin to design clock tower, tower resembling other towers designed by Pugin, including one from Scarisbrick Hall. Project Clock Tower was last conducted by Pugin before going mad and dying, himself writing at the time when Barry came to him to take the drawings: "I have never worked so much in my life [that] for Mr. . Barry for tomorrow give all drawings to complete its clock tower and beautiful. "The tower is 96.3 m high. The first 61 m from the base are made of brick wrapped in colored Anston limestone sand. The remainder of the tower is made of iron. The tower has its basis on a concrete slab 15 square meters and a thickness of 3 m, located at a depth of 4 m below ground. The four clock faces are at a height of 55 m. The internal volume of the tower is 4,650 m.

Although it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the world, inside the tower is not open to foreign visitors, only UK citizens can arrange visits (many days in advance) through their Member of Parliament. The tower has no elevator, so visitors have to climb all 334 steps to the top.Because of the change of soil from construction (primarily by the construction of the Jubilee subway), the tower is slightly tilted to the northwest, with about 220 millimeters on the clock.
