Unique lighting solutions are being used to light up more and more urban areas. An evening

stroll through the illuminated streets and avenues leaves no doubt that light alter ambience and

contribute to safe, thriving environments.

Over the years, Louis Poulsen has remained strongly committed to the development of fixtures

for outdoor illumination. A number of the fixtures that currently feature in our outdoor range

originally stem from project solutions. For example, 50 years ago we developed a fixture for Al-

bertslund – a suburb of Copenhagen – and this has gone on to become more famous and more

widely utilised than ever.

We are now introducing a new fixture for the same urban area – and other settings – designed

by Mads Odgaard, the man responsible for the successful Icon light. The MO500 fixture is a mod-

ern LED fixture which, with its discreet design and functionallity, will stimulate a sense of secu-

rity, comfort and ambience for citizens.

For Louis Poulsen, it was a delight to continue the working relationship with

Mads Odgaard. We previously developed the Icon fixture with this same de-

signer – a fixture that has become very popular on account of its innovative

and durable design.

Icon has been continuously updated to accommodate new light sources and

has become one of the most energy-efficient street lighting fixtures on the

market. At the same time, it has proved its extensive applicability – from

both architectural and functional perspectives – in all kinds of urban envi-

ronment. The experience we have systematically accumulated with the Icon

fixture has provided us with invaluable knowledge as a foundation for de-

veloping the MO500, with a focus on reducing maintenance and servicing to

an absolute minimum.

In its basic form, MO500 is a soft, harmonious cone. The lower section of the

fixture consists of an opal acrylic section, which glows gently with light from

the reflector.

The MO500 is a soft, harmonic truncated cone in shape. The lower part of the

fixture is an opal acrylic shade which is pleasantly and decoratively illuminated

with light from the reflector.

The fixture creates a visual light canopy above the street, forming a border be-

tween the illuminated road and the dark night sky.

The illuminated acrylic shade also serves as a glare-free visual guide, marking

out the street. The reduced glare has been achieved using an indirect light dis-

tribution technique that significantly reduces the passing-by glare effect.

With its discreetly unassuming design, the MO500 provides the basis for general lighting of roads

and streets.

The development of urban spaces is no longer tied up in traditions. More and more players are

drawing inspiration from the world around us, and we at Louis Poulsen have made a significant

contribution to new and alternative urban renewal through the performance and discreet design

of our fixtures. Street lighting is no longer exclusively functional; it also serves to generate a sense

of comfort and security.

Louis Poulsen lighting solutions are well known for their ability to adapt seamlessly to their sur-

roundings, both indoor and outdoor. The MO500 is no exception and is eminently suited to both

repetitive installations and stand-alone use.

The MO500 emits a light that creates space above the street because it does not truncate the street

profile along the horizontal plane. Instead, it disburses the light softly and gently across the street

façades and focuses it for intense illumination of the area. These are all aspects that show consid-

eration for both vulnerable road users and cars. Suspended from wires, the fixture creates a uni-

form rhythm in the street environment while simultaneously highlighting the layout of the road.

The backbone of a lighting plan

LED AsymmetricalThis version allows the light distribution to be adjusted, and hence opti-mised to suit the conditions. The light can be adjusted to emit differing de-grees of asymmetrical light. This version is particularly suitable for use on a general side-mounted street light on a pole.

LED Double-symmetrical distributionThis version is primarily used with wire suspen-sion over the roadway, where light has to be spread along the length of the roadway.

13

Many people view street lighting as an uninteresting necessity. Very often,

the choice of fixture is decided on the basis of dry figures and technological

considerations. However, at Louis Poulsen we believe that a rational choice

can easily be united with human, comfort-related aspects. This is one of the

reasons why our lighting solutions enjoy such long durability. From both aes-

thetic and functional perspectives.

The MO500 is a beautiful representative of our lighting philosophy. For exam-

ple, the light fixture is available with both LED double-symmetrical and ad-

justable asymmetrical light distribution. This makes it possible both to deal

with the technological challenges related to light distribution and to accom-

modate the desire for a visually uniform expression.

As night falls, the urban lighting takes over, outlining a secure environment

for activity in the streets. But why should it only be possible to experience

towns and cities in natural colours during the day? From the perspectives of

both safety and experiences, there is every reason to provide the architec-

ture and surroundings with naturalistic lighting during the hours of dark-

ness. Particularly in places where people spend time and pass through.

MO500 is one of the best solutions for creating harmonious concordance be-

tween day and night. For this reason, the MO500 is fitted with an LED light

source featuring a choice between two colour temperatures: 3000K and

4000K. At the same time, the Ra index is 80+, bringing the colour reproduc-

tion of the fixture up to match the requirements for indoor lighting.

A top-mounted version of the MO500 is available. This opens the door to a

host of creative options over and above standard versions. It is possible to

choose everything from conventional wire suspension to the most creative

mast solutions imaginable.

Alternative options were considered from the very start, to allow variation

of the overall impression so as to improve integration with the surroundings

even further.

The fixture’s discreet design is ideal for creating perceived diversity among

urban areas.

LED is categorised as a long-life light source. However, both service life and the light depend on a

wide range of factors:

the quality of the light source, thermal management and, in particular, the fixture itself, which is

crucial to the perception of the light.

In developing the MO500, we have strived to create the best possible thermal conditions for the LED

light source and driver. With its thoroughly detailed construction, the light makes the very most of

every LED light source and ensures the provision of good illumination throughout its long service life.

LED is only as good as the surroundings
