Dear Friends in Christ,

As you gathered around the Thanksgiving table this past week, I hope that your family took a moment to reflect upon what you are especially grateful for in your lives. As your Pastor, I am thankful for your commitment to discipleship which includes your presence, prayers and support of our Annunciation Catholic Church parish family.

On November 27th, we will begin a new liturgical year with the celebration of the First Sunday of Advent. I pray that the spiritual aid, Sacred Reading, that was mailed out to all registered parishioners, will assist you and your loved ones this Advent. Each day, a brief reflection is provided which you may wish to ponder individually, with your family or with friends. I suggest that you place this spiritual aid in a convenient place in your home (perhaps the kitchen table?) so that you are inspired to grow in faith during these days of preparation for the feast of Christmas.

I am especially excited this year about our Advent Outreach. We are partnering with local schools and Cross Catholic Outreach to deliver a Christmas gift to children, both locally and internationally, that otherwise might not receive one. Each of the gifts, called a Box of Joy, will contain basic items for hygiene and health, a t-shirt, and a toy or game. Since we have 3818 registered families in our parish we will be assembling 3818 Boxes of Joy… one from each of our parish families. I hope that you will participate by taking a Wish Slip after Mass and purchasing the necessary items, making a financial donation to the project, and/or attending our Starry Night celebration on December 14th when we will be assembling the boxes for shipping. For more information on how you can participate, please visit annunciationorlando.org. Thank you for your prayers for the children who will receive a Box of Joy in honor of all of our parish families!

Each week, I stand before you and ask for prayers for myself as well as the Priests and Religious Sisters who serve our parish. Your prayers provide encouragement and strength for us and also bind us together as a family of faith. Know that we are praying for you, your loved ones and your intentions. May you find great joy in giving thanks to God for the blessings in your life! In Joyful Hope,

Very Rev. Stephen D. Parkes, V.F. Pastor

Excer t from the Gos el

MT 24:37-42

Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.

Stewardship Reflections on the Readin s Most of us are quite familiar with Jesus’ comments about faith, hope, and love. As we enter the Advent season, it is a time for us to emphasize all three, but today’s readings in particular speak of hope.

Isn’t that what Advent is all about?

Many people in our world, perhaps even here in our parish and community, seem to have a feeling of hopelessness. We should not be among them; worldly thinking produces hopelessness, but our hope is found in Jesus Christ Who has redeemed us and paid for all our sins on the Cross.

In the First Reading the prophet Isaiah foresees a time of peace, a time when all literally “walk in the light of the Lord.” Two phrases commonly quoted are included in this reading: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” This peaceful world is exactly what we prepare for during this Advent time. Think of how often we hear the word “Peace” used at this time of year. Think of how many Christmas cards bear that word alone.

Peace produces hope and hope produces peace. That is the feeling we are seeking at this time, as we prepare to declare “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” The eminent French author Alexandre Dumas (who wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo among others) once wrote, “All human wisdom is summed up in two words: wait and hope.” Is that not what we do during Advent? thecatholicsteward.com

The Breaking of the Oplatek One of the most beautiful and most revered Polish customs is the breaking of the oplatek. The use of the Christmas wafer (oplatek) is not only by native Poles in

Poland but also by people of Polish ancestry all over the world. The oplatek is a thin wafer made of flour and water. For table use, it is white. In Poland, colored wafers are used to make Christmas tree decorations. In the past, the wafers were baked by organists or by religious and were distributed from house to house in the parish during Advent. Oplatek wavers are available in

the Book Store.
