FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 1, 2015

Blessing of ThroatsFeast of St. Blaise

Tuesday, February 3Throats will be blessed at the 8:30 a.m. Mass (Daily Chapel)

and at the 2:00 p.m. Prayer Service The annual blessing of throats is a traditional sign of the struggle against illness in the life of the Christian. It is part of the plan of God’s providence that we should fight strenuously against all sickness and carefully seek the blessings of good health, so that we may fulfill our role in human society and in the Church. Throats will be blessed during the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the daily chapel and during the Prayer Service at 2:00 p.m. in the church.

Saint Blaise was bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, Saint Blaise has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. We pray in a special way on his feast day for protection from afflictions of the throat and from other illnesses. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick.

We pray in a special way on his feast day for protection from afflictions of the throat and from other ill-nesses. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick.

High School Ministry Some of our high school youth continue to participate in the West Side High School Volleyball League. They play on Sunday evenings and enjoy volleyball with other parishes and the also have the opportunity for a youth ministry session before/after each game. We are always open to having more teens play, so if you know anyone interested please contact Rod Dunlap at [email protected] or 614-1789.

Young Adult Ministry Our young adults continue to meet every Tuesday night at 7pm in the Youth Ministry room. As

we enter into this new year, the group continues to do a weekly Gospel reflection, have great discussion, and also enjoy fellowship with one another. Coming up here in the next month, the group will look at attend a Young Adult Service Fair in February, which will generate ideas for future community outreach. Also in March, some of our young adults will be attending a day-long young adult retreat at the Holy Spirit Center. If you are in your 20’s/30’s and wish to join us please contact Rod Dunlap at [email protected] or 614-1789.

Junior High Ministry Our 8th graders have began their Confirmation preparation so please keep them in your prayers throughout their journey! Also, many of them will begin taking a Theology of the Body class starting in February, which is a great opportunity for them to learn more about themselves and how God is calling them in their lives.

T he word ambry is derived from the Latin armarium (cupboard or chest) and signifies the place where the vessels of oil used in

celebrating sacraments are kept. These oils are blessed by the bishop at the Mass of Chrism celebrated during Holy Week and are brought to each parish church for the various rites of anointing. The three oils signify the universal charisms of the church for initiating (oil of catechumens), healing (oil of the sick) and consecrating (chrism). As early as the sixth century, ambries were used to hold consecrated communion bread as well as the oils, and were often located in the base of the altar. By the thirteenth century, separate locked ambries were used for the eucharist only. This was an accepted practice by the sixteenth century, when this separate container was called a tabernacle. In the meantime, smaller amounts of the oils

were stored in the sacristy, or in a simple wall niche or recessed cupboard known as an ambry. As with all other vessels used in the liturgy today, the vessels for the oils should be of a quality and design that speak of the importance of the ritual actions. The vessels should hold an ample supply of the oils, thus symbolizing the generosity of God’s gift. The gestures of anointing can then be performed with similar generosity of touch. The display of beautiful vessels reminds the community of the reverence it gives to its members as they are welcomed in baptism, confirmed in the spirit and anointed in their illness. To be anointed is to participate in an ancient biblical and ecclesial rite of blessing, and to enter into the mission of Jesus Christ, the anointed one of God.
