E. L.-and J. G.MACYjfarmerand merchanic; P. O.Harveysburg. Oneamongthe
prominent and early pioneer families of Harveysburg, was the Macy family, and their
descendentsconstitute a large number of families in Harveysburg and vicinity at fhe
present time. They have a very completegenealogy of the familyfromits first location
in the United States published in book form, and irom it we find they have multiplied
and extended nntil they are found in twenty-twoStates ofthe Union, and in 1868 there
were then living 1,240 souls; deceasedsince their settling in the United States, 851 ;
unknown, 17 ; total, 2,108. The progenitor of this now so memorous family was
Thomas
Macy
born in Wiltshire Co., England; emigrated to Americaabout
163.5
and
becameone of the first settlers of Newbury, Mass.; residing there but a few years, he
removed
to Salisbury, Mass. and was one of the original settlers of that town. Mr.
Macy
was
a man ofsterling
character
j ossessed of
great
energy and determination of
will; he held many positions of honor and trust in this new settlement; wasa merchant,
planter, one of the selectmen of the town, a juryman, and withal a preacher ; he was
of the Bapiriol ; and would irequeuiiy on the Sabbath exhort the people. Mr.
Macy resided at Salisbury until 1659, when the
q}ersecution
of the Quakers, Baptists,
aod others became so intolerant tha t be would endure it no longer, and he, with nine
others, purchased the islandof Nantucket, and in September or October of above
yc.ar
he, with his
family
embarked in a small sail boat in Boston Bay, rounded Cape
Cod
and sailed directfor thelslaod. This Island was then inhabited by about 3,000 Indians.
There he, witha few
others
settled, bravingall danger to secure a free altar and a safe
home, aod thereby transmit to his descendents the seeds of true liberty and pure relig

As
time progressed
the
Lukens homestead underwent various
alterations and
modernizations.
The
original puncheon flooring was replaced by sawed floor joist
and
flooring
and
the exterior was covered
with board siding. In lateryears a stonewalled basement
was
added andat a laterdateyet a lean to
kitchen
was
added making
the
original kitchen
fireplace obsolete thus causing it to be
removed.
The
Victorian period
brought
additional
alterations to the
building with
the
enlargement
ofall the
original windows and
w
ith
the
installation
of a
Victorian mantle around
the
original heating fireplace.
The Twentieth century also brought its share of changes and additions.
At the
present time
all
modernization
and
additions
to the
building have
been
removed exposing
the
original structure.
This house exemplifies the typical logarchitecture inWarren county. This building being
above average
size is an excellent example of a prosperous business mans home.

When the
Village
association tookpossession of the
grounds
two
buildings
wereonthe site:the Lukens
house and the Lukens post and bream barn built on the site in about
1810.
Thebarn
had been
stripped of all itssiding
which
was intheprocess thatall the buildings inthe project
areawent through were either taken
down
forthe material in them moved to another location or
simply demolished A few were burned by vandals
The
weathered
barn
siding
a desirable
commodity
for decorative
purposes
had
been
taken
bya
local
builder
leaving only
the
frame and
the
roof. Although
it was
piled
full of
manure and debris
the frame
wasstill strong so it wasdecided to restore it as oneof the first Village projects
Through
several
years
the
Village
volunteers removed
siding
from other
condemned buildings
n the
project
area sawed itto
fit and
resided
the
building. A floor
was put
in
and
doors
and
windows added
and the big
barn
doors
were
built.
Stone
foundation
work
was done and
the
building became
a
valuable
item for both storage and operation
of
the Village
Overthe years it has
been
