PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
Fig. 1 - Lubrication Chart 1. Boom Cylinder Pivot Pin 2. Boom Pivot Pin
3. Boom Cylinder Cross Head Pin
Theservice the machine will give is dependent on the maintenance the machine receives. Most Important is that the daily checks be carried out on both the tractor and backhoe.
Always lower the backhoe bucket to the ground for safety.
Complete cleanliness is necessary, when maintaining the hydraulics; any part reassembled in a dirty condition could result in serious problems.
Maintenance of the machine is separated into four items:
Daily Check Weekly Check Oil Filter Air Breather/Cleaner
DAILY CHECK
a. Check oil level in reservoir of loader frame by, first, cleaning dirt from around dipstick and breather before removing.
4. Crowd Cylinder Pivot Pin 5. Dipper·Stick Pivot Pin
6. Crowd Cylinder Cross Head Pin 7. Bucket Cyiinder Pivot Pin
b. Add oil, if necessary (to full mark), with type "AU automatic transmission oil.
NOTE: An alternate fluid may be used, if it is currently approved for general automotive use, according to the armour qualifications system, provided the armour qualifications num ber and date is certified and made record by the supplier. This includes type ''A" suffix '~II fluids. Do not use motor oil or detergent oil, as its use will seriously damage the hydraulic system.
c. Visual inspection of all hydraulic cylinders, control valves and hose connections for oil leaks.
d. Grease all points indicated in Fig. 1.
NOTE: Do not grease stabilizerslides, as this will tend to Pick up grit and cause extreme wear.

OBTAINING A STRAIGHT TRENCH
To obtain a straight trench, it is best to mark out a line of lime or chalk about one foot off center of trench, and, then, make a slight marking on the backhoe frame about one foot off center. The operator can maintain a straight line by keeping the mark on the backhoe directly over the lime marking on the ground.
Fig. 5 - Digging to Expose Pipe
DIGGING TO EXPOSE A LEAKY PIPE OR DRAIN
When carrying out this operation, always dig along the line of pipe, and never cross it. Excavate around the leak to give ample room for the repair to be made; note Fig. 5.
Fig. 6 - Grave Digging
GRAVE DIGGING
First, select the bucket for the width of the grave, preferably, a bell hole; this type bucket will enable you to dig a grave in one setting and square the front and back walls easily.
Position the backhoe in line with the grave, with the backhoe swing pivot approximately 48" from the nearest edge of the gra ve (Fig. 6). Locate the tractor so a trailer or small dump
Fig. 7 - Backhoe Positioning
truck can be set to dump the surplus soil into; see Fig. 7.
Cemeteries spend considerable money to keep the turf in good condition. It is important that it should not be damaged. Here are some useful rules.
When permitted to cut the turf, remove only enough to accommodate the stabilizers. Fit the spikes into the feet for rigidity; note Fig. 8.
If it is not permissible to cut the turf, then, use a 2" x 12" x 7' oak plank; drill holes to match the holes in the stabilizers. Set the stabilizers on the plank and drive steel stakes through the holes to hold the stabilizers and plank from moving (Fig. 9).

Fi g. 10 - Excavating on Slopes
Fig. n - Plumb Trenching
Cut and remove the turf for the outline of the grave; this will eliminate rugged edges, and keep the walls clean and straight.
Take shallow bites of dirt from the grave until you have reached a depth of approximately 18"; this will avoid damage to the surrounding turf. Thereafter, remove dirt by full buckets. Remember, grave digging is not high-speed work; this job must be done with great accuracy.
TRENCHING OR EXCAVATING ON SLOPES
When trenching on a slope, always start at the top and work downward. When working across a slope, make full use of the hydraulic stabilizers on the backhoe to level the machine. Always pile the dirt on the uphill side (Fig. 10).
To dig plumb trenches on slopes over a 10% slope, use the backhoe to cut out a small terrace, as in illustration Fig. No. 11, and pile the soil on the lower side to provide a firm support.
BOOM LOCK-OUT VALVE
The boom lock-out valve is located on the left side of the seat frame and is used to lock the boom in transport position. This valve is standard on all 220 Backhoes now in production.

When using the backhoe for digging, move the lock valve control handle in the forward position; see Fig. 12.
When not using the backhoe, move lock valve control handle to the rear position; see Fig. 13.
CROWD CIRCUIT LOCK-OUT VALVE
The crowd lock-out valve is available as an accessory under machine code (No. 274943)and this valve mounts on the right side of seat frame. When valve control lever is in the rearward position, the crowd circuit is locked out; see Fig. 14.
Move the valve control lever in the forward position when using backhoe; see Fig. 15.
NOTE: Be sure to lock out control valve levers when backhoe is not in

use, as this protects the hydraulic system.
ASSEMBLY
DETACHMENT AND ATTACHMENT
Before attempting to detach or attach the backhoe, it is important to ensure that:
a. The operator has been instructed in the use of the hydraulic controls by an authorized person.
b. The operator has read the instructions under "Maintenance", and carried out all checks that are indicated.
c. The operator has studied the ''Safety First" notes in this publication.
DEl ACHMENl PROCEDURE
1. Position the backhoe to form a triangle with the main frame in the following manner:
a. Extend stabilizers to ground level.
b. Lower bucket to ground about 7"'8 feet from main frame.
2. Remove linch pins and withdraw shoulder pins securing the attaching beams to the main frame.
3. Remove linch pins and withdraw shoulder pins securing the tie links to the main frame.
4. Retract stabilizers to lower the backhoe.
5. Correct vertical alignment of main frame by operating boom ram control lever.
6. Switch off engine and reiease pressure from the hydraulic system (except boom) by operating control levers.
7. Disconnect pressure hose at the quickcoupler. Disconnect return hose at the quickcoupler and attach pressure line from the valve to the reservoir.
8. Do not connect the pressure and return hose on the backhoe.
9. Drive tractor clear of backhoe.
