DESCRIPTION
1. Contexte et justification
Situé géographiquement dans le territoire appelé Asie des Moussons, le Cambodge s’étend de part et d’autre du cours inférieur du Mékong. Les plaines forment l’essentiel du paysage, interrompues çà et là par des collines ; celles-ci sont formées de grès clairs, qui sont des restes de l’ancienne couverture jurassique et crétacée, et de roches calcaires, granitiques ou volcaniques, appartenant au socle préjurassique.
À l’Ouest, le Cambodge est dominée par l’imposant massif des Cardamomes, qui a conservé dans l’ensemble sa forêt primitive. La forêt claire à Dipterocarpaceae domine sur les sols à affleurements rocheux ou latéritiques. Là où affleure la roche, on trouve également des formations semi-denses (Lythraceae, Fabaceae, Meliaceae, …). Les sols argilo-sableux portent de belles forêts denses. Les formations de Conifères (Pinus merkusii Jungh. & de Vriese) sont submontagnardes. Le point culminant du Mont des Cardamomes à Thmar Baing est de 1200 m.
2. Objectifs
Le Massif des Cardamomes est couvert d’une forêt dense encore non étudiée. Mais d’après les quelques études floristiques de cette région, il apparaît que ce massif est très riche en espèces endémiques, spécialement parmi les herbacées (Zingiberaceae par exemple). Quant aux plantes médicinales, la cueillette traditionnelle joue un rôle prépondérant dans ce massif, où l’on trouve de nombreuses espèces de cardamomes parmi lesquelles l’Amomum kravanh Pierre ex Gagnep., et un ligneux réputé pour ses huiles essentielles, l’Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte, utilisées en médecine traditionnelle asiatique contre le paludisme et le choléra. Ces deux exemples sont presque les seuls à avoir été étudiés, alors que subsiste une très grande quantité d’espèces endémiques et médicinales mal connues et non encore répertoriées floristiquement.
Il est fondamental de pouvoir récolter ces espèces végétales en vue de leur détermination précise afin de bien connaître le patrimoine végétal que le Cambodge a à gérer durablement, et plus particulièrement dans ces Montagnes qui seront appelées à s’ouvrir au tourisme. L’approche écologique de ce travail selon un gradient altitudinal (amplitude de 2200m au niveau de la mer), et en fonction de la diversité de substrats rencontrés. Ce travail fait aussi partie intégrale du projet d’enrichissement de l’Herbier de RUPP, de la constitution de la Checkliste de la Flore du Cambodge, ainsi que de la formation des techniciens et des étudiants dans le cadre du Master en Biologie végétale (formation par la recherche grâce aux séjours sur le terrain).

- Phytotaxonomie tropicale, notamment en rapport avec la Flore du Cambodge, du Laos et du Viêtnam et les autres Flores : recherches taxonomiques.

- Ethnobotanique du Cambodge : considérations générales, aperçu de la pensée botanique du cambodgien.
- Missions de terrain pour les techniciens et étudiants, encadrés par le Curator et les spécialistes étrangers (2 fois 2 semaines par an – janvier/février et novembre/décembre – pendant 3 ans : déplacement et frais sur place). Les spécialistes étrangers grouperont leur activité de formation avec le travail sur le terrain. Estimation du nombre d’espèces du Secteur est d’environ 300 espèces.
- Évaluation de l’aspect médicinal des plantes en rapport des notes recueillies auprès des tradipraticiens des régions prospectées.
- Notion de plantes endémiques.
- Identification et détermination des spécimens récoltés au laboratoire. Enrichissement des récoltes de l’Herbier RUPP.
- Inventaire floristique, avec indication des espèces endémiques et/ou médicinales.

6. Résultats attendus
- Connaissance de la Systématique des plantes tropicales, notamment de la Flore du Cambodge.
- Inventaire floristique de la flore de la région prospectée (Mont des Cardamomes, Thmar Baing, Province de Koh Kong), avec indication des espèces endémiques et/ou médicinales de cette région.
- Publication de cet inventaire floristique.
7. Indicateurs mesurables de succès du projet
Le succès du projet pourrait intéresser les différentes Flores du Secteur Asie du Sud-Est : Flore du Cambodge, du Laos et du Viêtnam, Flora of Thailand, Flora Malesiana, Flora of China; et d’autres Ouvrages & Monographies : Cambodia Medicinal Plants, Cardamom Mountains – Biodiversity Survey 2000, Medicinal Plants of Cambodia – Ministère de la Santé, Monography of Threatened species, IUCN ‘Red List’, …
Nombre de spécimens récoltés : env. 900/1000 spécimens prévus, entreposés à RUPP, dont les duplicata seront envoyés à P & E.

1. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESEARCH FOCUS
Job title: Tropical Systematic Botanist
I started this post in January 2001. I continue to be Head of the Zingiberaceae Research Group of the RBGE. My role is to focus the Group's studies by discussing hypotheses and guiding students through the complex literature.
2. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
a) CURATION
I am curator of the herbarium and living collections of two plant families, the Zingiberaceae and the Dipterocarpaceae, which are particularly diverse in Asia and of all the families worldwide in the order Urticales.
Between 1993 and 1997 I put all herbarium sheets of Dipterocarpaceae held at E plus c. 1200 each from K and L, and all type specimens from the herbaria of The Netherlands onto a PANDORA database. Following release onto the internet in 1998 (www.rbge.org.uk/data/diptero) updates have been issued, the most recent in October 1999.
All sheets and spirit collections of Zingiberaceae at E are being recorded in a database which is part of the Zingiberales Resource Centre on the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh web site (http://www.rbge.org.uk/data/ZRC/home.html).

Dr. Achariya Rangsiruji (Thailand) graduated with a Ph.D. of the University of Edinburgh in July 1999. Her thesis was accepted with minor corrections only. She was supervised by Dr. Quentin Cronk and myself .
Mr. Chatchai Ngamriabsakul (Thailand) graduated with a Ph.D. of the University of Edinburgh in July 2001. His thesis was accepted with minor corrections only. He was supervised by Dr. Quentin Cronk and myself.
Mrs. Marlina Ardiyani (Indonesia) completed her M.Sc. in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants at the University of Edinburgh in 1997. In October 1997 she began her Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh under the supervision of Dr. Quentin Cronk and myself. Marlina’s thesis was examined and accepted in May 2002.
Mr. Vichith Lamxay (Lao PDR) is registered with Uppsala University and started his studies in 2006. My role as a co-supervisor is to help him revise the genus Amomum for the Flore du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam.

3. EMPLOYMENT RECORD
2001 Two months at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris as Maître de Conférences Invité in order to carry out research into Globba (Zingiberaceae) of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
1998-2000 Full time, 100% funded by a grant from the Bioinformatics Initiative, a fund of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) of the UK government. The research was part of a project to develop a novel database system for cataloguing biodiversity, called Prometheus. My part of this was to carry out a revision of Globba (Zingiberaceae) for the Flora of Thailand and to help the computer programmers at Napier University to model taxonomic procedures.
1993-1998 Employed by ABW Associates Ltd., Cambridge on Oxford University's Research Officer scale and based at RBGE. As Tropical Forest Botanist, I was the principal member of a team of three people writing a series called Manuals of Dipterocarps for Foresters. The majority of the text in the Manuals and the on-line identificatIon systems included on floppy disks with each book were based on computerised descriptions of the species and subspecies, allowing non-specialists to identify trees using any character on their specimen and scoring the characters in any order.
Ten manuals were written, in English and Indonesian, covering all the commercial timber-producing Dipterocarpaceae of Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo, the remainder of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. A CD-ROM edition was also published.
