He studied in New York City with Giacomo Ginsberg (name changed later to Giacomo Bourg) and subsequently with Louis Simions (?) and made his debut in Monza (Italy) in 1910 as Rigoletto. He appears to subsequently having sung in Torino, 1911, although there is some confusion here. A result of a recital in Boston upon his return (likely in 1910 but possibly 1911) was his being engaged by the Boston Opera for the 1911 season and being sent by a wealthy patroness to Paris for preliminary studies with André Caplet, the noted composer and a conductor with the Boston Opera. Olshansky appeared in Boston in about a dozen roles for two seasons (these including the Jailer in Tosca, Yakuside in Madama Butterfly and Valentin in Faust) and performed in a similar capacity with the Montreal Opera around the same time. After that experience, he seems to have left opera in favor of the recital stage and was heard in New York as a concert singer on a fairly regular basis, mainly at Aeolian and Town Halls. He also appeared successfully in various concert venues throughout the country. The last traced such program was at Town Hall, March 25, 1932. A Musical America reviewer reported, “Much of Mr. Olshansky’s singing was of decided beauty, especially in the medium register, and a cleverly- managed falsetto.” Olshansky’s death from pneumonia occurred just as he was to embark on a concert tour of Florida. He left both parents (who resided in NYC), his wife and a son. 1366. 10” Blk. Victor 69342. THE DEMON: Romance (Rubinstein) / KOLODNIKI [THE PRISONERS] (Tolstoi-Bleichmann). DMITRI ONOFREI [t]. Rumania, 1897-Country Meadows, PA, 1991. After serving as an infantry officer in WW I, Onofrei studied voice in Italy and made his debut in Malta, 1921. He was next heard in Italy and then the United States, making his debut here in 1923 with touring San Carlo Opera Company as Rodolfo in La Boheme. He remained with the San Carlo Company for 17 years, often sharing the stage with his wife, Bianca Saroya, the company’s leading dramatic soprano. During that period he also appeared with the Chicago and Cincinnati Operas, and one performance at the Metropolitan in 1937 as Wagner’s Lohengrin. At the conclusion of their stage careers, the Onofreis taught voice in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco, and in the 1950s headed the opera department at the Cincinnati Conservatory.

Earlier he had been a member of Melba’s Farewell to Australia touring company. Those interested in seeing and hearing Mr. O’Shea at work will find him on a Pathé video on YouTube made in 1936.

ELIZABETH PARKINA [s]. Kansas City, MO, 1882-Colorado Springs, CO, 1922. Parkina studied in Paris with Mathilde Marchesi on the advice of Nellie Melba, who heard her in 1896. Her debut was in 1902 at the Paris Opéra Comique as Lakmé. It was as Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme with Melba and Caruso that Parkina made her Covent Garden debut. She toured Australia in 1905 with great success. Sometime in the 1907-08 period she appears to have abandoned her career as a result of ill health. She resided in Europe until the beginning of the World War in 1914, returning then to Kansas City. Her death, a result of pulmonary tuberculosis, occurred in 1922 at a sana-torium in Colorado near the home of a brother. Her few, very attractive and rare London G&Ts are keenly sought by collectors.

LUIGI PASINATI [t]. 1890 - ? . A pupil of Antonio Cotogni, Pasinati likely made his debut in around 1915. He appeared in New Zealand in 1924 with the Musgrove Celebrity Vaudeville Stars, credited as being a “Famous Tenor” and sharing the stage with Danny D’Alma “and his wonderful dogs” and, as well, May and Keith in “vivacious varieties”. The next year he is more appropriately billed at the Philadelphia Academy of Music as Don José in a “revised adaptation” of Carmen (i.e. highlights without chorus) with Geraldine Farrar, Emma Noé and Joseph Royer conducted by Carlo Peroni. In 1926 he was back in Italy, where he appeared at the Teatro di Torino in a concert conducted by Vittorio Gui. The disc below appears to be his only recording.

DAVID POLERI [t]. Philadelphia, 1921-Hawaii, 1967. A student of Alberto Sciaretti, Poleri made his debut in Chicago, 1949, with the San Carlo Opera as Gounod’s Faust and 1951 with the NYC Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata. In 1954 he created the leading tenor role of Michele in Menotti’s The Saint of Bleeker Street in New York (in English) and the following year at La Scala (in Italian) and, in addition, appeared at Glyndbourne, Edinburgh, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and various other operatic festival sites. He evidently had quite a temper, as in singing in Carmen with Gloria Lane at the Chicago Lyric Opera, when he “stalked off the stage in the final act, snarling “Finish it yourself!” to the conductor (with whom he was said to have had a tiff). Miss Lane there-upon sang her part with the offstage cover singing Mr. Poleri’s from the wings. She ended up, instead of being murdered by Don Jose, by committing suicide, stabbing herself with her thumb as there was no knife handy. Mr. Poleri and his wife met their demise while sightseeing in Hawaii in a helicopter which crashed into a volcano.

His European debut was with the Dresden Royal Opera in 1899 and he remained on the roster through 1912. During this period he also made guest appearances at Covent Garden, Bayreuth and the Metropolitan Opera. After leaving Dresden he returned to the U.S. and occasionally appeared in concerts and taught.

LÉON RECHTLEBEN [b]. Warsaw, 1879-New York City, 1942. A leading baritone with the Warsaw Opera circa 1915-1923, Rechtleben also appeared in Italy and Germany and had studied with Edouard de Reszke. He came to the U.S. through an invitation by impresario Sol Hurok to appear with the German Opera Company in 1923. This didn’t work out, interestingly, as it was traditional at the time for Wotan (the role for which he had been requested) to wear an eye patch over his left eye. Rechtleben had a damaged right eye and couldn’t have seen with patch over that eye, so he was replaced by Hermann Weil. He did subsequently sing with the San Carlo Opera, the Hippodrome, and various other smaller U.S. companies and in concerts (including Aeolian Hall). He made only this one record. Included with the record is a four-page sketch on his life and career provided for me about twenty-five years ago in letter form by his niece, Ellen Lebow.

GIUSEPPE RESCHIGLIAN [t]. Padova, 1895-Amsterdam, 1949. The younger brother of baritone Vincenzo Reschiglian (Met Opera, 1909-1929), Giuseppe made his operatic debut in 1895. He performed an assortment of leading lyric tenor roles (in operas such as Elisir d’amore, La Traviata, Don Pasquale and La Sonnambula) in a number of Italian theaters. In 1916 he began a lengthy association with an Italian opera company in Amsterdam, in 1918 appearing there under Willem Mengelberg in the Verdi Requiem. In the U.S. he toured with the San Carlo Opera Company in the 1920s and then with the Philadelphia Opera Company. In 1938, he returned to the Netherlands where he remained as a singer and teacher until his death. His recordings seem to be limited to the item below and one acoustic record for Fonotipia from Mascagni’s Lodoletta.

VLADIMIR RESNIKOFF [b]. Russia, 1890-New York City, 1920. At the age of three, Resnikoff’s optic nerves were frozen as a result of trying to lower a fever with ice and and he was thereafter blind. His family emigrated to New Haven, CT, and Vladimir was enrolled in a school for the blind in New York City. There he studied the piano and singing. Caruso heard him and said his voice was “a miracle” and predicted for him a wonderful future. He subsequently studied with Francis Rogers and coached with Bruno Huhn. He developed a repertoire of folksongs of his native Russia in addition to some standard repertoire in several languages and gave a celebrated concert at New York’s Aeolian Hall in 1917, appearing thereafter at various venues. Comments in the press referred, in addition to his remarkable voice, to his “magnetic personality”, unique interpretive skill and his handsome appearance. He made only one record, one side recorded in 1917 (with piano) and the other (unaccompanied) in January, 1920, about two weeks prior his final performance: a recital at the Manhattan Opera House. A few days later he contracted pneumonia and died at the age of 30.

BASIL RUYSDAEL [bs]. Jersey City, NJ, 1871-Hollywood, CA, 1960. The son of Prof. Charles F. Millspaugh of the University of Chicago, he took Ruysdael as a stage name (one wonders why this particular choice) upon beginning his singing career and in 1915 changed it to that legally. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910 and remained there through 1918, where he sang 36 roles, including the King in Aida, Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Lindorf in The Tales of Hoffmann and varied group of other roles, mostly small and in German. He left for Germany after World War One and had success there, including some more substantial parts than he was assigned in New York. It was there that he made his only recordings as a singer. After returning to the U.S. in the later 1920s, his career followed a different path and he became a radio announcer and a film character actor, his first appearance on screen having been in the Marx Brothers The Coconuts (1929). His film and announcing work continued through the 1950s, his numerous films including, among others, Come to the Stable (1949) and Blackboard Jungle (1955). He also appeared in a number of TV programs emanating from Hollywood.

ALFREDO SALMAGGI [t]. Felice, Italy, 1886-Brooklyn, 1974. After mandolin and voice studies in Italy, Salmaggi emigrated to the U.S. and managed to secure work as an assistant conductor with the Boston Opera in 1909. Facts about his early years vary. One clipping gives his birth place as l’Aquila in 1886 or 1887 and that he was a pupil of Mascagni and Antonio Cotogni. Much of his activity seems to have been teaching singing and performing in the New York area until he began producing opera “for the people” at the Brooklyn Academy in 1915. In 1933, he founded the New York Hippodrome Opera Company. There, Salmaggi [described by Time Magazine as “a long haired, high strung Italian … who carries Caruso’s silver headed cane”) gave New York low price opera. The huge Hippodrome was often filled for his productions both on and off stage, such as Aida, which featured elephants, camels, and singers mostly on the way up or the way down. I remember playing the piano for a tenor auditioning for him in Brooklyn late in his career. Cav. Salmaggi wasn’t hard to miss with his flowing hair, white jacket and cane. A vision from another world!

3498. 10” (oversized) Columbia trial 32511-1. RIGOLETTO: Questa o quella (Verdi). Written in matrix around rim is Mr. Salmaggi’s name and address at the time (602 Pacific Street, Brooklyn) and “for Mr. Burns”. I would imagine this to be about 1912. There is a curving crack on the blank side (only) in about 2”. Surface side is rubbed, 4 (likely the result of an unsleeved life), but no apparent greying. $50.00.

FRITZI SCHEFF [s]. Vienna, 1874-New York, 1955. Trained as a vocalist at Frankfurt's Hoch Conservatory, Scheff made her operatic debut in Munich, 1899, as Flotow’s Martha. She subsequently appeared at the Met for three seasons beginning in 1900 in operas ranging from Mozart to Wagner. Paderewski, whose Manru was included in her Met repertoire, dubbed her “The Little Devil of Grand Opera”. Victor Herbert realized that she would be an ideal operetta star, and he enticed her from opera for his 1903 Babette. In 1905 she starred in Victor Herbert’s Mlle. Modiste, “an operetta on feminist themes”, and she appeared in it on and off for over twenty years. She was also successful in vaudeville. In addition to her musical and theatrical star qualitites, she was noted for her off-stage temperament, the role of “prima donna” being part of her personality.

1968. 10” Rockhill SS vinyl transcription NBC-TV, 10/5/52. MLLE. MODISTE: Kiss Me Again (Herbert). From a 1952 ASCAP Telecast hosted by Ed Sullivan. While Scheff never recorded this or anything else commercially, there’s a 1936 radio broadcast in circulation of her singing “Kiss Me Again” (in the key of G, a whole tone higher than she sings it here), in addition to one Mapleson cylinder recorded at the Met of a bit from Faust in 1901. By the time of this telecast, there’s little left of her voice other than fleeting memories, although she appeared a year or so later very shortly before her death singing the same thing on Ed Sullivan’s Toast of the Town, which is available on YouTube. Harmless superficial rubs. 2. $10.00.

JULIUS SCHÜTZENDORF [bs or bs/b]. 2244. One of the five Schützendorf brothers, the other four having had international singing

experience (Gustav, Leo, Guido and Alfons). I haven’t found any information on Julius’s career, but it is obvious from the disc below that he did have experience as a singer. This seems to be a professionally made two-sided recording (on some sort of plastic) by a company in Köln named Tonstudio hornig. The pianist is Artur Engel and both sides are stamped 9. Nov. 1935. Unfortunately the two selections aren’t named and I don’t recognize them. There’s a letter included with it (in English) from Julius’s nephew written to George Jellinek, who was given the record. He, in turn, presented it to me (with a penned note on the letter) There’s a small lbl. tear one side. I’d call it 2-3, but it plays perfectly cleanly. $50.00.

FELIX SENIUS [t]. Königsberg, 1868-1913. As a child, Senius moved to St. Petersburg, where his father was given a position as a bank director. Encouraged by his older brother, a well known operetta singer, Felix began vocal studies. While working in his father’s bank, he began to give charity concerts in St. Petersburg in 1895. He then relocated to Berlin, giving his first lieder concert in 1900 and also that year making his first oratorio appearance in Händel’s Messiah. Within five years he became one of Europe’s most successful concert and oratorio tenors, appearing in England, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany and Scandinavia in many choral festivals and as soloist in orchestral concerts under the direction of a host of the era’s major conductors. In 1913, a banquet was given in his honor in his native Königsberg. “Sadly, this well meaning gesture proved disastrous. After consuming a piece of tainted fish at the banquet, Senius contacted ptomaine poisoning and died a short time later.” His few and rare records were made in German for Anker around 1912. – Dead Tenors’ Society (Internet).

FRANCISCA SOLARI [s]. Genoa, 1880-Civitanova, 1969. Just as I’m typing this entry, the June, 2016 issue of The Record Collector (Vo1. 61, No.2) has arrived with a fascinating study on this artist as well as a discography. The soprano below, I discovered, is a totally different and unrelated personality (I originally listed them here together). This is just another reminder as to how important this magazine is to all of us who collect vocal 78s (or CD reissues of singers of the period). If you don’t subscribe, it’s a “must”.

4013. 11” Fonotipia 92969/92968 [XPh4865/XPh ]. ISABEAU: Venne una vecchierella alla mia corte / ISABEAU: Ave Maria (Mascagni). With ROSA GARAVAGLIA [s]. The label for side two lists as the singers as ERMYNGARDE and ERMYNTRUDE. These are the characters in the opera who sing this “Ave Maria”. Michael Hen-stock’s Fonotipia Recordings book confirms the identity of the actual artists from the recording log. Two very small lbl.stkrs. Just about 1-2. $30.00.

CRISTINA SORO (BARRIGA DE BALTRA) [s]. Concepción, Chile, 1886 - Santiago, Chile, 1967. Soro began vocal studies with Italian teachers who had settled in Chile. She made her debut at the age of 15 at the Santiago Teatro Municipal, singing compositions of her brother, Enrique Soro Barriga. It was Barriga who accompanied Soro in her first group of Red Seal Victor records (originally trial recordings), these made in Santiago (another souce indicates Havana, Cuba) in 1917 on portable equipment by a Victor talent scout then visiting Central and South America. This was a year after she had graduated with highest honors from the Santiago Conservatory of Music, receiving a degree of Professor of Music. On the success of these trials (which included the disc below), Victor wanted her to come to Camden to record with orchestra, but she had entered a course of study at the Verdi Conservatory in Milano and wasn’t available until 1922, when she made her second and final group of records. A concert tour of Mexico with pianist/composer Manuel Ponce followed this. Apparetly Soro didn’t appear in opera, her career having been as a recitalist and teacher. She was active in the latter capacity in 1949 when she was interviewed for Hobbies Magazine by William R. Moran (and from which article this information is taken).

MOSTYN THOMAS [b]. Blaina, Wales, 1896 - San Francisco, CA, 1984. Originally Thomas James Thomas, Mostyn worked in the coal mines as a youth. His voice was discovered at the Ammanford Eisteddfod, and the Blaina community raised money to send him to Italy for musical studies. His debut was as Tonio in Pagliacci at the San Carlo, Naples, in 1929. In addition he was successful at Covent Garden and the Milan Teatro dal Verme, but he chose to move to the U.S. Here he toured with the (U.S.) San Carlo Opera for many seasons and appeared with a number of other companies as well, such as the Steel Pier Opera in Atlantic City, NJ. He married a millionairess widow and they resided in Hollywood for a period next door to actress Jane Russell. His career continued into the 1950s, and it was consistently marked with excellent reviews for both his singing and acting. His few records, made early in his career, are scarce.

ARMAND TOKATYAN [t]. Bulgaria, 1894 (other dates include 1892 and 1896)-Pasadena, CA, 1960. Although Armenian, Tokatyan’s parents fled to Bulgaria during a period of political unrest and then to Egypt, where Armand performed in café concerts and operetta. He was redirected to Paris by his father to learn a profitable trade, which turned out to be tailoring. This was during World War I. Following that period he began serious vocal studies in Milano with Nino Cairone and made his operatic debut in 1921 at Modena as des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. He then emigrated to America and tried a career as a concert singer in San Francisco. “Nobody came,” recalled Tokatyan. “They didn’t know me or anything about me. I had no friends. I didn’t know English. Why should they come?” He was, luckily, advised by conductor Giuseppe Bamboschek, who knew him from Modena, to contact baritone/impresario Antonio Scotti, who accepted him for his touring opera company. Shortly after he appeared as Cavaradossi with Scotti as Scarpia and Mabel Garrison, a lyric-coloratura as an unlikely Tosca. When the Scotti Company disbanded in 1922, Scotti introduced him to the Met’s General Manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza, who promptly hired him. He became a leading tenor there upon his debut and remained until 1946. He was also an important figure with other U.S. companies, including Chicago and San Francisco. In 1923 he wed New Yorker Marie Antoinette Abbey. By 1944, they were headliners in the New York Daily News as a result of marital discord. Tokatyan stated that “on many occasions [she] has criticized my singing and has stated that I ‘stink’ whenever I sing, and that if only I would listen to her I would become the greatest tenor in the world.” Following his departure from the Met in 1946 and presumably from Mrs. Tokatyan, the tenor moved to California, where he spent the remainder of his life teaching.

GAETANO TOMMASINI [t]. Due to the last minute illness of tenor Morgan Kingston, Tom-masini was pressed into service for his Met debut, May 6, 1921, as Rhadames, sharing honors with Maria Escobar, who was also a replacement for the scheduled Aida, Frances Peralta. According to the press, “the performance was delayed more than half an hour in starting, but as the big audience was late in arriving, this caused no considerable annoyance. … Mr. Tomassini [sic] strode woodenly through his part and his voice was not one to move his hearers to rapture, but they applauded him wholeheartedly in recognition of his painstaking and gallant effort to measure up to his surroundings.” See also: MATTIA BATTISTINI [b]

GIL VALERIANO [t]. El Vergel, Alicante,1896 - New York, 1942. Valeriano emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 17 and, according to two different sources, studied originally with Giulio Crimi and/or Ferruccio Corradetti. However in an advertisement, Frank La Forge claimed that Valeriano “had done his entire voice work, coaching and programme building” with him. Valeriano also worked with La Forge as a teaching assistant. He made his operatic debut at the Manhattan Opera House in 1922 in Arrieta’s Marina. He subsequently appeared mainly in concerts until singing two seasons (1932-34) with the Paris Opéra Comique, which purportedly included Manon, Lakmé, Werther, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. He is, however, not listed in the Wolff history of that house which covers the period of 1900-1950. Also, he is credited as having sung with the NY Hippodrome Opera in 1936. He also toured in concert in Germany, London, Paris and his native Spain, as well as throughout the U.S. He appeared in recital at Carnegie and Town Halls, the latter for the last time on Feb. 26, 1940, where he was applauded for his “obvious musicianship” and his “interpretive ability”. Valeriano made two private recordings for Victor in October, 1925.

JOSEF WINOGRADOV [b]. Vilna, 1866-Israel, 1936. Born in Russia, Winogradov appeared at Covent Garden in 1890 as Frère Laurent in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, also featuring Melba, as well as Jean and Edouard de Reszke. He was with the Russian Imperial Opera (the Bolshoi) around 1901, alternating with Tartakov. In 1912 a Yiddish Opera House was opened in London and Winogradoff came over from St. Petersburg as the company’s leading baritone, appearing in an opera by Alman (King Ahaz) and also Verdi’s Rigoletto (sung in Yiddish). 1920 marked his American debut in concert at the New York Hippodrome under the sponsorship of Sol Hurok. Musical America described Wingradov’s voice as “fresh, full, resonant, manly and even throughout its long range – one of the best baritone voices newly heard here in a long time. His production is excellent and there is freedom and flexibility in his singing. He is an artist – though, with his peculiar appearance [not further explained], into just what niche in American musical life he will fit is difficult to say.” He toured for the next few years and eventually settled in Brooklyn, where he served as a Cantor. In 1934 he moved to Israel.
