Welcome to the 62nd Annual Festival of Barbershop Harmony!

We’re pleased and thankful for your participation. The Magnolia Chorus spent the last few months preparing for our performance this evening and you can be assured you’ll receive our best effort.

We are confident that you will really enjoy the two quartets we have in store for this year’s show. Men in Black has performed all over North America. This award winning quartet has roots in Musical Theatre, Opera, Jazz and Barbershop Harmony. You will also appreciate the adherence of Vocality to the traditional roots of the Barbershop style of music. The goal of the quartet is to create a “magical moment”. The show, of course, would be incomplete without the ladies, so we added the Center Stage Show Chorus to dazzle you with a few of their favorite songs as well.

The Greater Jackson Area has much for which it should be proud and the Magnolia Chorus is one of them. Established in 1947, our group has, since its beginning, performed whenever called upon to do so by organizations which need wholesome entertainment. We’ve performed at the VA Hospital, the area’s nursing homes and retirement villages, at memorial services at a cemetery, funerals, high school reunions, the Daughters of the American Revolution convention and the list goes on. Whenever and wherever we go, our purpose is consistent. We want to provide the audience with a short period of relaxation, reflection and pleasure through our medium which is, of course, A Cappella Four Part Harmony in the Barbershop Style. Our payback comes by way of broad smiles, approving nods and yes - applause.

You make us possible. Through your support by your attendance at our annual concerts, by your patron donations and by your purchase of ad space, this once-a-year musical event funds substantially our entire annual expenses. Chorus members pay their own out-of-pocket travel and uniform expenses but you pay for our insurance, our music, our performance fees, audio equipment, storage facility rental, etc.

We are grateful for your support and ask that you patronize our advertisers. Please mention the Magnolia Chorus when doing so.

And finally, we salute the men responsible for the start of our group back in the late 1940’s. 62 years ago they supported barbershop singing in Jackson and two of them continue to do so. “Van” Van Rusling and Randolph Peets are singing with us tonight. Now that’s dedication!

Thanks again for being here with us. And now...”How About A Little Harmony!”

What is the Magnolia Chorus? The Magnolia Chorus is the Jackson Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, an international fraternal organization established in 1938 and originally known as SPEBSQSA - The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. The “dba” name reflects the expansion to the current status of chapters throughout the world with one in substantially every major city in the U.S. - 700 chapters - 30,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. The Magnolia Chorus had its beginning in 1947 and currently has a membership of 30 gentlemen of all ages drawn together by a love of singing barbershop music.

What is Barbershop?Barbershop is Four Part A Cappella (no accompaniment) Singing in which the Lead (2nd Tenor) typically sings the melody, the Tenor, most often, sings notes higher than the Lead, the Bass sings notes lower than the Lead and the Baritone sings whatever notes, below or above the Lead, that completes the chords. For the musically educated, the predominance of 7th chords gives the barbershop sound its appealing “ring”. The lyrics of the songs most often involve love, family, God, country and geographic locations. Clean humor very often plays a part in barbershop music.

MEN IN BLACK

An award-winning quartet with roots in Musical Theatre, Opera, Jazz & Barbershop Harmony.

Formed in 2002, Men In Black has performed all over North America, entertaining audiences of all ages. Influenced by Broadway, Classical, Jazz and Barbershop (among others), MIB brings a unique sound to a cappella music.

Lifelong students of the theatre, Tony Nasto, Oliver Merrill, Ray Johnson and Karl Hudson each draw from their extensive experience and education in theatre and the performing arts, to combine powerful, character-driven presentation and tight harmonies.

Men In Black has toured high schools, colleges and universities across the United States, enriching the lives of young people and showing them the joy of making music.

Their theatrical treatment of barbershop songs has created an expectation among their audience of a deeper and more expressive performance than you would typically see on a

barbershop stage. This unique quality makes Men In Black a pioneer in the barbershop world, as they strive to draw you into their music, their story, and their hearts with every performance.

Vocality is an acappella quartet with a wide ranging repertoire from classic gospel to 70s classic rock tunes to barbershop.

Vocality loves to sing and our performance comes from the heart. It is this spirit that makes Vocality’s performance extraordinary. Our aim is to create a magical moment, so while you are sitting in the audience, we sing not to the multitudes, but just to you! From our inception in February 2007, Vocality’s philosophy has been to preserve the art of barbershop and acappella music and to commit our heart and soul to every performance. We seek to spark enthusiasm and inspire young people to see music in a whole new light – to keep acappella harmony alive and pass it on from our generation to the next. We feel privileged to enjoy the fellowship of our barbershop friends at home and all over the world. It is truly an honor for Vocality to have been crowned the 2007 LO’L District Champions as well as advance to the Semi-Final level at the International Competition.

We love singing together and entertaining audiences and especially enjoy igniting the spark of

music in young people everywhere.
