Location of Industry

An entrepreneur must choose an ideal location at the time of launching of the

enterprise as location plays an important role in success or failure of the unit.

Selection of porbandar as a site for the location of this plant was natural due to the

easy availability of all raw materials and other amenities.

Main reasons for the location of unit at porbandar are as under:

1.  Availability of raw material

Here raw materials are salt and limestone. Salt is easily available as porbandar

is situated near seashore and limestone is available from nearby areas like ranavav,

adityana.

2.  Availability of electricity

SAUKEM has its own power house so abundant power is available for 24 hrs.

So the company does not have to face any problems regarding electricity.

3.  Availability of labor

In porbandar, the company can find skilled and experienced labors at low

wage rate. The company also can get educated and well qualified staff due to good

standard of education in porbandar area.

4.  Other facilities

As this unit is not so far from porbandar city, infrastructural facilities like

banking, housing, insurance, postage, water facility, etc is easily available. And there

is no transportation problem as broad gauge railway lines connect porbandar with

major cities of the country.

Production Department

Introduction

Production is the initial part of manufacturing a product. It is a process of converting raw

materials into finished goods.

Production management is the process of effectively programming, coordinating and

controlling that part which is responsible for the actual transformation of materials into

finished products.

In SAUKEM, all the activities are done with the help of machines.

Raw materials

The main product of SAUKEM is soda ash. To produce soda ash, raw materials like salt,

coke, limestone, water, etc are required.

Salt:

Salt is basic raw material for manufacturing soda ash. About 1.8 tones of salt are

required in manufacturing of 1 tone soda ash.

Coke:

Coke is used as reducing agent in the manufacturing process for converting limestone

into lime.

Limestone:

About 2 tones of limestone is required to produce 1 tone of soda ash. Other inputs for

manufacturing soda ash are ammonia, steam water, power, etc.

14

Page 17: mahesh khistariya

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/mahesh-khistariya 17/61

Manufacturing Process of Soda Ash

SAUKEM has adopted solvency process for production of soda ash.

Following is the conventional solvency process used for production of soda ash in SAUKEM,

(A)BRINE PURIFICATION:-

The main raw material of salt and lime stone brine at a concentration of 304

grams thus, produced is crude brine which further required the purification to remove

calcium and magnesium impurities. Magnesium is removed by adding milk of lime by

adding soda ash.

(B)LIME KILN ORINDING:-

Lime stone and coke mixed in requirement of proportion is changed to vertical

lime kiln and burnt using combination from bottom. On burning lime stone is

decomposed to lime and carbon dioxide, called as lime kiln gas.

Lime kiln gas is cooled down and party clean with cooling water in gas

scrubbers. Final clean is done in electrostatic preceptors.

Lime from this section is conveyed to lime grinding section for pulverization

and kiln gas floors to compress for carbonation lamps. Lime is used and subsequently

pulverized to 0.15mm. patrician sized and is ready for used in distillation section.

(C)AMMONIATION ABSORPTION:-

The purified brine is first taken to the carbonating tower exist the

NH4OH + CO2 ----------> NH4HCO3

N4CL + NH4HCO3 --------> NaHCO3 + NH4CL

15

Page 18: mahesh khistariya

8/4/2019 mahesh khistariya

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/mahesh-khistariya 18/61

The above reaction can take place only at low temperature. If the temperature is high then

reaction will be reversible there by efficiency of conversation becomes poor.

Sodium bicarbonate is taken out from the carbonation to tower in the form of shortly called

magma. Magma consists of a mixture of sodium bicarbonate in solid from and other

components Viz. Ammonium, chloride, bicarbonate, sulphide and iron is traces. The magma

is taken to filtration section where solid bicarbonate (crude bicarbonate) is taken to calciner

for converting it into sodium carbonate and ammonia and taken to ammonia absorber.

2NaHCO3 --------> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

Gas scrubber in under to remove the ammonia and unrelated CO2 in a unit called LCL brine is

taken to the absorber, where ammonia is injected to convert it into ammoniated brine.

(D)CARBONATION AND FILTRATION:-

Lime is calcined in the vertical shaft lime kiln by feeding the mixture of limestone,

and coke from the top and blowing air from the bottom. The calcine lime stone is taken from

the bottom of the lime stone and stored in lime silos CO2 from lime kiln is sucked and

compressed before taken into carbonating tower. Carbonating tower is the main equipment

for the conversation of sodium chloride to sodium bicarbonate.

(E)AMMONIA DISTILIATION:-

CO2 and water vapor are cooled in RGS gas cooler and gas is taken back to

carbonation. Tower through compressor and ammonia are condense is recovered back from

the process in distiller columns.

(F)CALCINATIONS:-

The crude bicarbonate is fed to a steam tube return where so dim bicarbonate is

decomposed to soda ash and carbon dioxide etc.

16

Page 19: mahesh khistariya

8/4/2019 mahesh khistariya

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/mahesh-khistariya 19/61

(G)DENSIFICATION:-

The difference between light and dense soda ash is bulk density. Dense soda ash is

produced by monohydrate process where soda ash is mixed with required quantity of water

monohydrate and reclaimed in a fluid iced bed drier cum cooler.

(H)PACKING:-

Light and dense soda ash is conveyed for bagging unit where it is packed in jute

HDPE bags by auto filling, weighting.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis refers to strength , weakness, opportunity and threats of any organization.

Strength and opportunities have the positive impact on the organization, whereas weakness

and threats have negative impact on organization.

Following is the SWOT Analysis of SAUKEM:

Strength:

Good cooperation and coordination among employees and good reputation is the

strength of an organization.

Weakness:

Due to government interference, it takes longer time in decision making, so delay in

decision can be said as the weakness of the firm.

Opportunity:

Continuous growth of the soda ash industry shows great potentials of the company in

near future.

Threat:

Cut throat competition is the biggest threat which this company faces.

Literature Review

Once the problem is formulated, a brief summary of it should be written down. It is

compulsory for a research worker to write thesis for the project.

At this juncture the researcher should undertake extensive literature survey connected with

the problem. For this purpose the abstracting and indexing journals and published or

unpublished bibliographies are the first place to go to. Academic journals, conference

proceedings, government reports, books etc., must be tapped depending on the nature of the

problem.

So literature review is the most important task in research work. All type of literature

provides right guidance for the purpose of study.

I have referred books related to human resource management.

1. ROBINSON

2. GARRY DESSLER

I have collected information from annual reports and different manual referred by

them.

Objectives of Research

Objectives of carrying out research in the organization are:

1.  To know about the benefit and services provided to the employees by the

organization.

2.  To know the satisfaction level of the employees.

3.  To get an idea regarding social responsibility discharged by the company towards

employees.

4.  Employee gets proper salary as per their designation.

5.  Employee getting training from the organization.

Research Methodology

Research Problem:

The research problem undertaken for study must be carefully selected. The task is difficult

one, although it may not appear to be so. Help may be taken from a research guide in this

connection. A problem must spring from the researcher’s mind like plant springing from its

own seed. Research problem is the task that must be tackled intelligently to avoid the

perplexity encountered in a research operation the usual approach is that the researcher

should himself pose a question and set up techniques and procedure for throwing lights on the

questions concerned for formulating or defining the research problem.

Scope of the Study:

Research in general has a very wide scope. Scope refers to the various avenues, which are

covered under a given field of study. Research covers field of study. Research covers

interrogation, evaluation and interpretation. Every research study starts with a problem and a

conclusion derived from the study becomes information of paramount importance in making

business decisions. Decisions taken on the basis of research conclusion yields miraculous

results. Objective of the research study is one of the decisions to be taken by the firm.

However there is indirect implication of any research study. Scope of the research study

directly depends upon the type of quality of research. Research has done with general

objective will have a wider scope as compared to research done with a specific objective.

The scope survey conducted by us can be summarized as under:

1.  Views of employees regarding company.

2.  Employee’s satisfaction level regarding facilities provided by company to them.

3.  Training & development programs held by company.

4.  Employees are satisfied with salary and rewards provided to them.

Sample Design:

Population:

SAUKEM the whole organization which consists of 2100 employees is population for

survey.

Sample Size:

Out of population of 2100 employees, I have taken help of 200 employees. So, sample

size is 200.

Sample Test:

Percentage Method

Sample Media:

Questionnaire

Limitations of the study

Low rate of return of the duly filled in questionnaires; bias due to no-response is often

undetermined.

The control over questionnaire may be lost once it is sent.

It is difficult to know whether willing respondents are truly representative.  This method is likely to be the slowest of all.
