     Xanthosoma is a genus of a#out ' species of tropical and su#tropical arums in theflo*ering plant family, Araceae, all native to tropical America+ "everal species are gro*n

    for their starchy corms, an important food staple of tropical regions, kno*n variously as

    malanga, new cocoyam, tannia, tannier, yautía, macabo, taioba, dasheen, quequisque and ‘ape+ any other species (including especially X. roseum) are utilied as ornamental

     plants, and in popular horticultural literature are kno*n as -ape or elephant ear (from the

     purported resem#lance of the leaf to an elephant.s ear ), although the latter name issometimes also applied to mem#ers *ith similar appearance and uses in the closely related

    genera of Caladium, Colocasia (i+e+, taro), and Alocasia+

    $he leaves of most Xanthosoma species are /0 cm long, sagittate (arro*headshaped)

    or su#divided into 1 or as many as 23 segments+ 4nlike the leaves of Colocasia, those of Xanthosoma are usually not peltate 5the upper vnotch e6tends in to the point of
