Introduction

The world today is complex and sophisticated. Malaysia being a developing country has undergone

rapid changes. The task of higher education is made more challenging with its needs to impart and

retain traditional values, while at the same time moving towards knowledge based society. As the

youngsters are to be the future leaders of the country, it is vital to prepare us with the necessary socialskills and moral strengths that can help guide us in decision making behaviours.

“A community service project has been shown to have a powerful influence on thestudents„ learning.Charity work benefits the students in a number of ways acquisitions of newlearning skills, improvement of social skills, and improvedconfidence and self-esteem (Voluntarywork, 2005). Lamsam, De Young, and Piper (2000) who investigated nursing students„ experience

s in service learning reported many benefits from a service learning approach. They found that thesestudents learned to respect other individuals, enhance their understanding on the needs of others,improve their confidence in interacting with others, and increase their communication skills. All thesevalues correspond with the moral values that Moral Studies is trying to instilin its students. Thestudents„ participation in the exper iential learning will develop a sense of patriotism and

communal values befitting a civil and caring society (Yaacob & Quek, 2005). Similarly, McKenna &Rizzo (1999) examined the impact of service learning on the students and found that it gave a positiveimpact on the students. The learning increased the students„ understanding of the course concepts,able to relate to the differences in others, and nurtured their self-confidence.”

Objective

The following are the objectives of the community project:

To help promote both intellectual and civic engagement by linking the work they do in the

classroom to real-community needs;

To encourage them to explore their own values through working with the charity organization; and

To experience the joy of giving;

To foster a caring and compassionate behaviour;

To create an experience for students to be an involved citizens; and

To provide valuable opportunities for them to enrich learning through hands-on activities.

(Azlin HJ Alwi,2006).

Activity

We have visited the SPCA Selangor on 13th April 2013, Saturday. Our team, as funding committee,

planned to raise fund by selling cupcakes and souvenirs to the visitors. From the fund obtained, we

could buy foods and shampoo for the dogs and cats as our little contribution.

Observation and Reflection- Gan Jin Wei (22546804)

First, I would like to express my gratitude towards my lecturer, Regina Chan, for giving us an

opportunity to pay a visit to SPCA Selangor on 13th

April 2013, Saturday. It was my very first time

visit to SPCA and I gained a lot of precious experiences through this anticipation.

When we reached SPCA Selangor in the morning, we were given some short briefing by the person-

in-charged. From the briefing given, I got to know some of the people in charged are volunteers and

they get no pay. This shows that they are care and compassion towards stray dogs and cats.

After that, we volunteered ourselves to change the newspapers on the base of the cage. I feel that

cooperation in between us has made the work easier and faster. Besides, by changing the newspaper,

we can ensure that their cages are in a more hygiene condition and prevent the bacteria from

spreading to the surrounding. I feel sympathy towards the stray cats and dogs as some of them are

very sick and paralyze. Besides, I got to know that some stray dogs and cats are ready to be adopted

by kind people.

After completing our first task, we, as funding committee, plan to sell some cupcakes and souvenirs to

the visitors to raise fund for SPCA. Unfortunately, due to time constraint, we got not enough time to

set up the booth and sell things to visitors. Thus, we changed our plan and collect donations among

ourselves. I am glad that all of us are generous enough and make the funding committee a great

success.

From the donations obtained, we bought ten packs of 10kg rice and some shampoo for the stray dogs

and cats. SPCA shows their appreciation towards our donation as we did contribute a little towards

SPCA.

From this visit, I feel that our society should create more awareness towards homeless dogs and cats.For example, campaign like adoption for stray dogs and cats should be held more frequently. Besides,

we should educate and inculcate our future generation to love animals more.

Observation and Reflection – Choo Yih Lin (24253189)

In the beginning, I would like to express my gratefulness to our Moral lecturer, Ms Regina Chan as

she gave us a lot of kind support and wise advices in funding and making the whole activity worked

out. It was a great experience of mine in the university, working together with fellow generous

classmates to set up a booth, fund raising for the homeless animals in SPCA.

When we were preparing for the fund raising activity, we faced a lot of challenges. It was the biggest

challenge to decide which kind of way we should do to fund raise. After many consultations from our

lecturer and numerous discussions being made, we finally decided to sell homemade cupcakes and

small handmade souvenirs to fund raise for the animals in SPCA. Cupcakes were being provided by

one of our thoughtful classmates, while our kind-hearted classmates were making the souvenirs. They

took to heart while making the souvenirs and they all turned out to be very nice and cute.

While selling the souvenirs, there were not very lots of people knew what we were doing and why

were we doing this. After some explanations from our patient classmates, they finally understood our

objectives and were willing to help us out, buying our products. We really appreciated their kindness.Finally, we were able to complete our fund raising activity and proceed to the next step, which was

purchasing goods to donate to the SPCA.

We searched from heaven to earth to look for the best goods to purchase. Finally, we were able to find

some shops that were willing to support our project by selling us lower priced rice and animal

shampoo. I am grateful to the providers who sympathise the homeless animals in SPCA. Thanks to

their contributions, we were able to purchase 10 packets of 10kg rice and 6 bottles of shampoos to the

helpless animals in SPCA.

After the fund raising and goods purchasing, we finally able to go to the SPCA and started our main

activity. I felt regret for unable to join the trip to SPCA due to some family matters. Fortunately, I

heard my classmates were having valuable time there with the animals and volunteers. It was

enjoyable to commit in the fun raising activity. I hope we can do it again in the near future, helping

homeless animals or even children and old folks to make a better future.

Observations and Reflections – Eugene Yow (23004118)

As a funding committee member, when it was chosen that SPCA Animal Shelter was our destination

for our community service, our main goal was to raise funds to provide for the volunteers and animals.

Initially some of us did not have sympathy for the less fortunate animals. However, through our moral

classes, we begin to assess the situation rationally and re-examine the inadequacy, inconsistency or bias for these animals.

This moral development process that nurtured us for 3-4 weeks can be classified as the Personal

Virtue Theory. Eventually we had the same Objective Values, where majority of the society agrees

that cruelty to animals is wrong and something had to be done about that.

When we reached SPCA, the amount of animals there were shocking. Dogs and cats were all around

the place. There were workers and volunteers running the place. The place was pretty run down and

could use some renovations for a bigger space to hold all the animals. However, the most reflective

incident happened when the lady in charge of the SPCA showed us a video of the animals being

treated cruelly and what SPCA does to make a difference.

I noticed that there are cases where animals were brought in, but put to sleep because the inability of

SPCA to adopt so many animals. There was also a statement which said that every month 300+

animals are brought to the SPCA, but only 130 are successful in finding a new home. I assume that

the remainder may be put to sleep.

I reflected on this action through the deontological theory and utilitarianism. Deontologists believe

that consequences do not judge whether actions are moral or immoral. Thus an action is morally

unacceptable regardless of the effects.

In this case, by putting the animals to sleep, the action or murder is morally wrong to deontologistregardless the intention. However, utilitarianism means actions are right if they are useful for the

greatest happiness of the greatest number of people. In this case, by letting the animals rest in peace, it

is morally right because it reduces the suffering for the animals. This made me wonder, if theories of

two extremes judge the same situation differently, which is the morally right judgment?

Observations and Reflections – Wong Jun Kit (23907630)

What I felt when seeing the pitiful state of the animals is a desire to help. This is the moment

I felt some truth in the intuitionism theory where it states that humans have an immediate

sense of right or wrong. I can feel compassion and also the wrongness of the owners that

abandoned their pets.

We were adhering to the existentialism principle in which we carry out good deeds based on

free will. This, in my opinion is the basis for voluntary work: free will. From another point of

view, we were practicing egoism since we did the voluntary work to get marks for the moral

studies assignment. I must stress that this is entirely voluntary and we chose to take care of

animals.

When our donated rice were being cooked and personally served by us to the animals, I was

thinking about their happiness when being well fed and felt happy for them. This, I reflect is

act utilitarianism.

From playing with the animals and seeing the state where so many animals were being

abandoned, I reflected that the animals need love and care. Seeing the video shown to us

convinced me that the way to save them is by encouraging adoption.

Conclusion

After completing the community project, we feel that we have obtained a precious experience, which

is not inside the textbook, and we believe that we will volunteer to take part in more community

projects in our future as our little contribution to the society and country.
