The modern history of Penang goes back to the 18th century when Penang was ruled by the Sultan of Kedah. At that time, Kedah was under the threat of being invaded by Siam. In return for the protection given by the British, Francis Light persuaded the Sultan of Kedah to cede Penang to the British East India Company. Due to the internal conflicts within the royal family and the unfavourable situation that Kedah was in then, the Sultan unwillingly agreed. On August 11, 1786, Francis Light officially took possession of the island and renamed it “Prince of Wales Island”. The settlement that grew from there was later named George Town, after King George III. Penang, which offered free trade, soon attracted migrants from many countries, especially merchants from Europe, Arab, India, China, Thailand and Burma. Pepper from the Indonesian Acheh harbour, clothes and textile from India, and cloves and nutmegs (a local favourite) from Penang were widely traded then.

Tourists can get to Penang via three different routes - sea, land and air. Airports in major cities in Malaysia, such as Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Langkawi provide flight services to Penang on a daily basis. Some international cities such as Londan, Guangzhou, Medan, Banda Aceh, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong also offer frequent flight services to the island. Alternatively, one can travel to Penang on land. To get to the island from the mainland, one can take a drive across the famous Penang Bridge or opt for the ferry ride that is available seven days a week. The conspicuous yellow ferries that cruise across the channel - from Butterworth to the island and then back again - carry both passengers and vehicles. Once on the island, one can choose from the wide variety of modes of transport. Choices include bicycles, trishaws, motorcycles, car, taxis and buses. Riding a motorcycle or bicycle, or driving, round Penang Island is a popular activity among tourists and locals alike.

Penang earned the name “Silicon Island of The East” from the large number of electronic factories that were built in the state by multinational corporations. These global companies have been investing in Penang’s free industrial zones since the 1970s. One can witness this phenomenal growth in the Bayan Lepas, Mak Mandin, Perai, Bukit Tengah and Bukit Minyak Free Trade Zones. The state’s main agriculture produce include oil palm, rubber and fruits. The agricultural land of this state covers over 55,000 hectares.

Located at Lebuh Leith, this elegant Chinese house is an authoritative representation of Chinese architecture from the 18th and 19th century. It was built according to Feng Shui. A businessman from Kwangtung built this mansion in the 1880s. Visitors to the mansion will be amazed by the many charming aspects of the house such as its blue exterior, golden brown brick walls, spiral staircase, the bedrooms, the libraries, the ceremonial halls, the heavy wooden doors, the beautiful courtyard and the garden. Khoo is the family name. Kongsi means clan (family) house. Khoo Kongsi was constructed as a meeting place to serve the Khoo community. It was a place where functions and ceremonies were held. The Khoo family, who migrated to Penang in the 19th century, spent 8 years building the house. Situated at Lebuh Acheh, the Kongsi, which is also known as Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, occupies 1,000 sq km. The clan-house was later converted into a temple for the purposes of worshipping the ancestors and Patron Saints. This magnificent building is covered with an attractive red-tiled roof - under which are beautifully decorated ceilings. Supported by strong and sturdy pillars and guarded by stone dragons and lions, the building tells of myths of China through its beautifully crafted walls. Ornamented beams, made from the finest wood, further lend support to the shrine. Constructed by master craftsmen from China, the design is modelled after a palace of the emperor of the Ching Dynasty.

Situated at Lebuh Armenian, visitors have to take a narrow path to get to this splendid colourful double-storey temple. As they enter the courtyard, they can see a well-kept lawn and magnificent sculptures on the walls. With its open balcony and a sweeping tiled-roof decorated with British lionheads, visitors get the feeling of visiting a palace as they step into the courtyard.

Cheah Kongsi

In the heart of Georgetown – within the UNESCO World Heritage Site zone – lies Armenian Street. Not so very long ago, many Malays settled in this part of town, making it their home and place of business. It was called Malay Lane then. The Penang Islamic Museum is located here. It was the former home of Syed Mohamad Al-Attas, a famous pepper mechant from Acheh. The shop house at 120 Armenian Street was the former base of the famous revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the father of Modern China.

In the early 1900’s, Chinese traders and merchants moved into the area and made it their business district. Soon, their imposing Chinese architecture began to dominate that part of Penang. For example, the Clan temples of the Cheah Kongsi, Khoo Kongsi and Yap Kongsi – which are located along or near Armenian Street have become major landmarks. The Armenian Street Chinese were known to have financed and made investments in many of the tin mines in Perak, a state located on the mainland, south of Penang. When the tin industry became a boom, the investments paid off and large amounts of money poured into the Chinese dwellers of Armenian Street. Subsequently, the area developed rapidly from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

Penangites, a fond name for the people of Penang, love to eat out and that is evident in the many hawker centres found all over the island. Penang stands out as a heaven for food lovers. Known as a “Hawker’s Paradise”, the ubiquitous food stalls serve endless varieties of mouth watering Chinese, Malay and Indian dishes that reflect the different culinary traditions of the multiracial population. The hawkers are strongly supported by Penangites, who mostly find it easier and cheaper to eat out any time of the day or night.

Penang has become so renowned for its hawker food like Penang Hokkien Mee, Penang Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Sar Hor Fun, Mee Rebus, Nasi Lemak, Chendol, Pasembur (Rojak) and Nasi Kandar. Penang’s tantalizing spectrum of delicacies is unsurpassed by any part of Asia and invites an unstinting indulgence of the taste buds.

The Botanic Gardens, more popularly known as the “Waterfall Gardens”, was established by the British way back in 1884 from an old quarry site. The beautiful grounds and the tranquillity of the gardens have long been enjoyed and admired by millions of visitors. Besides being the arboretum living plant specimens, it is also the seat of botanical conservation, educations and training. The Gardens also play an important role in the field of horticulture and landscaping development.

The Gardens were founded in 1884 by Charles Curtis from the Gardens and Forest Department Straits Settlements. As the first Curator, Curtis was a devoted plant lover who tirelessly transformed the granite quarry into a garden, and greatly contributed to the botanical and horticulture development of the Gardens.

Walking around the Gardens, one cannot miss the Cannon Ball Tree (Couropita guanensis) and the large buttress roots of the Sengkuang Tree (Dracantamelon dao). Look out for the Pinang Palm (Areca catechu) that lent its name to the island of Penang, and the Black Lily (Tacca integrifolia) with its unique purplish-black coloured flowers. The endemic Slipper Orchid (Paphiopedilum barbatum) and the ginger, Geoctachys penangensis, can also be found here. Look out also or the wildlife inhabiting the Gardens. Commonly seen are the Long-tailed Macaques, Dusky Leaf Monkeys, Black Giant Squirrels and a myriad of insects and butterflies. From afar, one could catch a view of the famous waterfall up on the hills above the resevoir.

In Penang, there are about 200 trishaw (locally referred to as beca) which are mostly scattered around Georgetown area. The modern beca is a pedal-powered trishaw rather than one that’s pulled by runners. Travelling in this opened-fronted three wheeled beca is truly a memorable and unforgettable experience, where tourists no need to stay stuck in the traffic, and having the ability to meander through congested roads and narrow lanes, one can have a leisurely up-close and explore the city of Georgetown in much slower pace. Getting around in this mode of transport allows one to stop to shop, snap picture or to buy souvenir along the journey.

The price of using a beca service is around RM15 to RM30 per hour. Visitor must try to bargain or negotiate for the best price before using the service. Some of the local tour agents or hotels do provide a package tour which includes sightseeing on trishaw with lunch or dinner included. The package tour cost around USD 35 to USD 45 and last about 2 to 3 hours.

Penang Bridge is the fourth longest bridge in the world, the longest bridge in the country as well as a landmark to Malaysia. It was officially opened to traffic on September 14, 1985. The total length of the bridge is 13.5 km (8.4 miles). The Penang Bridge a dual-carriageway toll bridge that connects Gelugor on the island of Penang and Seberang Prai on the mainland of peninsular Malaysia. The bridge is also linked to the North-South Expressway in Prai and Jelutong Expressway in Penang.

Linking Penang Island with the peninsula, its impressive structure stands magnificently across the glittering blue sea. The bridge has a symmetrical fan-shaped centre span that rises above 225 meters. Looking from a distance (from the ferry, for instance) or driving across the bridge, one cannot help but feel awed by the beauty and splendour of the bridge.

Since its opening, the Penang Bridge has become an iconic part of George Town. Like the Brooklyn Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge, Penang Bridge has contributed significantly to the rapid development of Penang both as a tourist as well as an industrial centre. Every year the Penang Bridge Run takes place on the Penang Bridge itself and along the scenic coastal highway of George Town. This is the only time of the year when the bridge is closed for several hours in the wee hours of the morning. Currently, the Penang Bridge is being expanded from 4 lanes to 6 lanes to accommodate the increasing traffic on the bridge.

Penang National Park, a natural forest sprawl at Penang Island’s northwestern most tip, is called “Bay of Glowing Amber” due to its scenic and spectacular sunset. The natural attractions of Penang Nasional Park include the Hill Dipterocarp Forests, Mangrove Forest areas, Sandy Beach habitats, the unique seasonal meromictic lake and the open coastal seas. Stands of Seraya (Shorea curtisii) trees, common feature of coastal Dipterocarp Forest, can be easily seen on steep slopes around Muka Head. There are over 1000 species of plants recorded which are dominated by the family Dipterocarpaceae, Leguminoceae, Apocynaceae, Anacardiaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Moraceae.

The White-Bellied Sea Eagle and their nests on tree canopies can be easily observed at coastal forests. Two species of turtles, notably the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Olive-Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), frequent the west facing beaches to nest from April to August and between September and February respectively to nest, especially at Pantai Keracut.

At 830m above sea level, the summit of Penang Hill offers a scenic view of Penang Island. With cool breezy air, the hill is a popular tourist destination. Penang Hill, the tallest point on the island north of Malaysia, offers its visitors the funicular train ride up to its peak. Many find the train an interesting mode of transport to get to the top. The train together with its tracks was built in 1922. The funicular train makes Penang Hill the only hill in South East Asia that boasts such a mode of transport. The journey on the train to the top of the hill takes about 30 minutes.

Tourists can also opt to hike up the hill from the Botanic Gardens through the forest that surrounds the hill. The journey takes about 4 hours. At the peak, one would be able to see the vestiges of villas (built during the colonial era) amongst the lush flora and fauna. The other attractions available here include the teahouse, beautiful flower gardens and a bird park. Accommodation is available at the rustic Belle View Hotel. The view at night is equally, if not more, breathtaking. When sunset, the twinkling lights of the city of Georgetown and the Penang Bridge are a sight to behold.

Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis is located on northeastern tip of Penang Island. This is the place where Francis Light first set foot on when he arrived at Penang Island in the year 1786, making it one of Penang’s oldest sights. The wooden fort was reconstructed in stone between 1808 to 1810. Today only the outer walls remain. The fort overlooks the Butterworth Port across the channel. From here, one has a good view of the activities of the seaport and its extended shoreline toward the east. An interesting artefact of the fort is an old Dutch cannon known as Seri Rambai. Made in the early 1603s, it is deemed by some locals to possess magical powers. It is believed that by placing flowers in the barrel of the cannon and by offering special prayers, infertile woman can start to conceive. There’s also an open-air amphitheatre, a historical exhibition hall and a souvenir centre at Fort Cornwallis.

The War Museum is the country’s first war museum and the largest war museum in Southeast Asia. It is also the only one in the world set within a tropical rainforest.

The Museum is located at the South-East of Penang Island, atop Bukit Batu Maung. It offers an exciting preview of battle history, events and significant moments of Malaya during World War II. The museum is actually an original British military defence fortress built in the 1930s to protect the island from enemies. Visitors can visit the canon-firing bay, anti-aircraft firing bays, sleeping quarters for the British, Indian and Malay soldiers, cookhouses and lockups. The original cooking tools found during the excavation of the museum in 1995, help visitors get a clearer picture of the soldiers’ military life.

Kek lok Si temple

Situated at Air Itam, Kek Lok Si temple is Malaysia’s largest Chinese Buddhist temple. It is also one of the largest and the grandest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. This temple was built in 1886 by an abbot from the Fujian Gu San temple in China. The abbot, named Miao Lian, was also a famous Zen Master. He used granite to build the temple, blending it seamlessly with the shape and slope of the hill. A flight of steps made of stones takes one from the foot of the hill to the pagoda, right up to its grand front courtyard. Inside the seven-storey 30-meter tall pagoda are ten thousand Buddha images. The temple is, therefore, also known as the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

At the Kek Lok Si Temple ground, it contains beautiful gardens and sacred pond. One of the famous ones will be of course “The Liberation Pond” (Sacred Turtle Pond). Chinese tradition believes that a turtle is a symbol of longevity, strength and endurance. It is an act of spiritual liberation when a turtle is captured and set free in this pond.

The latest addition to the temple complex is the 30.2m bronze statue of the Avalokitesvara - Goddess of Mercy or Kuan Yin - on the hillside above the pagoda. If you want to get a close-up look of the Kuan Yin statue, look for the signs for the ‘incline lift’ to the goddess. The incline lift is more of a tram -- an elevator-sized glass box mounted on rails which go up to the terrace above the existing temple where the goddess stands. Use of the lift costs RM2 each way.

Reclining buddha (wat Chayamangkalaram)

Built in the 19th century, the Reclining Buddha is located along Lorong Burma. This Buddhist temple is a must-visit for visitors who appreciate art and architecture. Here one can see the Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture designs blend into one single magnificent temple.

At the entrance, two colourful stone dragons serve to protect the temple and greet visitors. Inside the temple lies the third largest Reclining Buddha in the world, which measure 33 metres in length, is drapped in gold-leaved saffron robe.

Behind the Reclining Buddha stand twelve idols with each representing an animal. Due to their unwavering loyalty, these animals have gained a privileged position with the Buddha. A tower of urns, filled with ashes of deceased devotees, can be found at the vicinity too. Carved idols and paintings of Buddha in this temple are normally seen with scriptures in their hands.

The Dharmikarama Burmese Temple is situated just opposite Reclining Buddha (Wat Chaiyamangkalaran). In the temple are 30 paintings lined up in a row. Each painting shows the progressive stage of the human life. Among the human milestones that are depicted in the paintings are Birth, Growing up, Parenting, Sickness, Aging and Death. In addition, one can find in the temple sculptures of deer horn, elephant trunk, horse’s hoof, the body of a dragon and an eagle-winged creature. The creature, called the Panchaluba, is perched on a globe and this posture signifies its role as protector of the Earth. Some locals believe that the Panchaluba has the powers to fulfil the wishes of those who are keen to travel. All one has to do is just place both hands on the globe and silently say the name of the country he or she desires to visit.

Many Chinese believe in Tua Pek Tong, the God of Prosperity or the God of Wealth. Located at Tanjung Tokong, the ground of this temple was originally identified as a site for worship and

rituals for the group of people who resided there. Before the Second World War, the area around the temple was a favourite picnic haunt among locals. Today, in its place, is a restaurant famous for its crab dishes. On the eve of every Chap Goh Mei (the 15th day of the first lunar month of the year), praying sessions are held in the temple.

Kapitan Keling Mosque

Located at the junction of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Jalan Buckingham, it is the oldest and largest mosque in Penang. Built in 1800, it originally had a simple rectangular design with a long corridor and a sweeping rooftop. In 1926, the Indian-Muslims in Penang collaborated to employ the services of an architect to upgrade and improve the mosque. Upon completion, the mosque took on a new look that bears Moorish Islamic influence. The Kapitan Keling Mosque was named after an Indian-Muslim Kapitan, or leader of a small South Indian army called the Kelings. The Kapitan, named Caudeer Mohudeen, was once a mercenary hired to hunt down Francis Light. The ochre yellow exteriors and the dome-shaped minarets are the distinctive features of the Kapitan Keling Mosque.

Maha Mariamman temple

Maha Mariamman Temple is the oldest Indian temple in Penang. Situated at Lebuh Queen, this Indian temple was built in 1883. Its architecture is reminiscent of traditional buildings found in the south of India. Its main entrance and four walls feature fascinating lifelike sculptures of gods. Idols of Hindu gods reside in this grand and majestic temple. Among them is the idol of Lord Subramaniam who is adorned with gold, silver, diamonds and emeralds. Every year during Thaipusam, this much-respected figure is placed on a silver chariot and led through the island in a procession filled of gaiety and festivity.

Goddess of Mercy temple (Kuan Yin teng)

The temple was constructed before 1800 by the first group of Chinese immigrants to Penang. It is constantly filled with burning joss sticks and flocked by devotees asking for blessings from the Goddess of Mercy. Situated at the south of Jalan Masjid Kapitan, Goddess of Mercy is one of Penang’s oldest Chinese temples. Two lifelike dragon sculptures that stand guard on top of its roof create an aura of respect and awe to visitors and devotees alike. Traditional performances and puppet shows are often staged in the granite garden on the grounds of the temple. Such performances are always carried out during the birthday of the Goddess which falls 3 times a year - on the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth Chinese lunar month.
