Being the smallest state in Malaysia, Perlis is situated at the northernmost part of Peninsular Malaysia. The State is bounded on the north by Thailand, the east and south by Kedah and on the west by the Straits of Melaka.

Even though the state covers a small area, Perlis does not lose out where attractiveness to tourists is concern. Perlis is a pleasant and excellent destination for holidaymakers with her expansive green paddy plains punctuated occasionally by limestone mounds and her laid-back rural lifestyle and picturesque natural setting.

Tourism Icons of Perlis

Perlis was once a part of Kedah. After Kedah was conquered by Thailand in 1821, Perlis was seperated from Kedah. The Thais established Perlis as a vassal state under the care of Syed Hussein. The Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 transferred Thai sovereignty over Perlis to the British.

In World War II, the Japanese ‘returned’ Perlis to Thailand during the Japanese Occupation in Malaysia. After the war, Perlis again came under the protection of the British until it gained independence with the formation of the Federation of Malaya in 1957.

玻璃市曾经属于吉打。1821年，吉打被泰国征服后，玻璃市脱离了吉打，并由赛胡先掌管。在1909年的曼谷条约之下，泰国将玻璃市的主权转给英国。

在第二次世界大战中，日本人占领了马来半岛，他们将玻璃市交给泰国管理。日本人投降后，玻璃市由英国管理，直到1957年加入马来亚联邦政府。

HISTORY 历史

Visitors have to fly into Alor Setar and then take a 45-minute drive to Kangar as there is no airport in Perlis. Daily express train services are available from Kuala Lumpur to Arau.

Ferryboats provide scheduled crossings between Kuala Perlis and the town of Kuah in Langkawi. The journey takes about an hour. The road system within Perlis is excellent and visitors can take the North-South Expressway from the South to Bukit Kayu Hitam. Padang Besar and Bukit Kayu Hitam are the gateway towns to Thailand.

TRANSPORTATION 交通

The economic activity of Perlis is dominated by agriculture, fishery and forestry. Together with Kedah, Perlis is located in the country’s ‘Rice Bowl’ area. Her main products are paddy, rubber, sugarcane, mango and watermelon.

Medium-scale industries and manufacturing are also important contributors to the state’s income. Besides a sugar refinery in Chuping, cement factories can also be found in Bukit Keteri, Jejawi, Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar.

玻璃市的主要经济活动是农耕、渔业及林业。与吉打同属大马“稻米之乡”的玻璃市，主要出产稻米、橡胶、甘蔗、芒果和西瓜。

1 GUNUNG PERLIS

玻璃市峰

Gunung Perlis, the highest peak in the State Park (known as Taman Negeri Perlis, in Bahasa Malaysia) stands at 732.711 meters above sea level. Here on Gunung Perlis, one would find a boundary stone marked with the label “8C”. The marker indicates the summit of the hill and, interestingly, the northernmost point of Peninsular Malaysia. The trail up the hill covers three stages and a hike up and down would usually take about 5 hours.

Visitors intending to climb Gunung Perlis would require the services of an experienced and licensed guide. In addition, visitors must also obtain the permit from the Perlis Forestry Department (Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Perlis).

玻璃市峰，是州立公园里最高的山峰；所在地距离水平线有732.711公尺。在山上，人们会发现有个标签着‘8C’的边界石。这记号显示了这座山峰的顶点，更有趣的是，也标示了马来西亚半岛的最北顶点。上山的路程总共有三个阶段，通常爬山者则需花大约五小时的上下山时间。

2 KOTA KAYANG MUSEUM哥打加央博物院

Lush limestone hills surround the museum grounds where once stood the ancient Indera Kayangan , a palace and ceremonial hall. It was built when Perlis was under the rule of Kedah, during the reign of Sultan Dhiaudin Mukarram Shah I (1661 – 1687). The hills acted as a barrier against enemy attacks, there is canal within it allowing boat passages to travel between the fort, to Kuala Perlis and Alor Star. It was an ingenious idea by the sultan, whose tomb is adjacent to the museum.

Located 12km from Kangar, The museum is a window into the 400-year-old history of Perlis. It displays archaeological relics as well as historical artifacts such as royal regalia, Neolithic stone tools, replica documents, royal genelogical charts, weapons, brassware, coins and many interesting antiquities.

哥打加央博物馆四周都被苍翠繁茂的石灰山包围着。这里曾经巍然矗立着一座名为 Indera Kayangan 的皇宫及进行礼节仪式的殿堂。当玻璃市在吉打的统治之下，它被建造于苏丹 Dhiaudin Mukarram Shah I (1661-1687) 的执政期间。那座石灰山曾被作为对抗敌人攻击的一个屏障，里边隐藏着的运河让船只能来往于城市、玻璃市港口和亚罗士打之间。这是其中一位远古苏丹所想出的别出心裁护城方法。如今，他的陵墓就被建于哥打加央博物馆的旁边。

3 GRAPE FARM葡萄园

The Ladang Perintis Tanaman Anggur JPS Perlis (The Perlis Department of Irrigation and Drainage JPS Pioneer Vineyard) is located at Jalan Guar Jentek, next to the Timah Tasoh Dam. It lies about 17km north of Kangar, the capital of Perlis. Planting work in the vineyard began on the 18th of June, 2005. As of January 2006, the area of the vineyard that had been planted was 1.8 hectares – with an estimated 3,800 grape plants of different varieties.

Among the varieties that have been successfully cultivated are the ‘IAC’ (Philippines), ‘ISABELLA’ (United States), `KYOHO’ and `NEW WHITE MALAGA’ (Thailand). The different varieties of grape plants were obtained with the cooperation of the Agriculture Department of Perlis.

玻璃市农业局于2008年在双溪岜株巴辖的武吉敏当设立首家葡萄园，距离玻璃市首府——加央约17公里。葡萄已从2005年开始种植，直到2006年葡萄的种植已约占1.8公顷，预计有3800多种类的葡萄，其中包括来自菲律宾、美国和泰国的品种。目前葡萄园的总面积为9.4公顷，种植了1万1千棵葡萄树。

Come the months of April and May, this 64.6ha plantation in the Bukit Bintang Agriculture centre will be flocked by mango lovers who come to purchase harumanis mangoes. As its name suggests, the fruit is fragrant (harum) and sweet (manis), and endowed with a thick succulent flesh.No matter how you prefer it – on its own, savoured with pulut (glutinous rice) and sweetened coconut milk or made into tasty juices and jams, its delicious taste will satisfy your taste buds and linger in your mind. Also available are varieties of mangoes such as mas indera, mas muda, chok anan and sala.

This recreational sport Woodball was introduced to the people of Perlis in the year 2009. It is a recreational sport of Taiwan. This sport depicts features of both modern golf and ancient croquet. The sport Woodball uses a stick in a wooden form of a mallet. The head of the mallet is cover with rubber. The objective of the game is to hit the ball with the mallet at the game field that contains 24 “gates”. For each “gate” a calculation of either three, four or five pars are played. Usually this game consists of four players for a team and the player who records the lowest number of strokes is recognized as the winner.

6 PERLIS STATE PARK玻璃市州立公园

The Perlis State Park shines out as one of the top attractions of the state. The pearl of Perlis, it is located along the state’s western border and straddles the Nakawan Range. Not only is it the longest continuous range of limestone hills in the country, it is also part of the 500 million years old Setul formation where you will find Gunung Perlis, the northern-most point in the peninsula. The 5,000-hectare park is made up of the Mata Ayer and Wang Mu Permanent Forest Reserves with unique features such as• The country’s only semi-deciduous, White Meranti-

Gerutu Seasonal Forest, which sheds its leave during the long dry season.

• Animal such as Serows (mountain goats), panthers, hornbills and is the only place in Malaysia where the rare Stump-tailed Macaque can be found.

• Rare and endemic species of gingers, ferns, and balsams uniquely blend in the forest.

The park has numerous caves of different sizes, suitable for both beginners and advanced cavers. You can also try out the Prince of Denmark and Rainforest trails where day and night walks are available. Other activities include bird watching, hiking as well as camping. Accommodations are available in the form of hostels, chalets or campsites.

7 HERBS GARdEN草药园

Rimba Herb is a microcosm of Perlis’ green heritage. The state’s marked wet and dry season and geographical location provide an environment conductive for the proliferation of various plants species. Over 1,000 plants of local and foreign origin are grown semi-wild in this 12-hectare living museum, a stone’s throw from the Bukit Air Recreational Park.

During the guided tour, as you walk along its meandering path, you will encounter a huge array of fascinating herbs, spices and plants valued for their medicinal as well as culinary values. Do ask about plants such as the tongkat Ali, kacip Fatimah, cekor, mengkudu, selasih and kayu manis, and you’ll learn a thing or two about their uses and how to care for them. After the tour, you can sample or purchase traditional herbal drinks.

草药园是玻璃市的绿色遗产小天地。这州属显著的干湿季节和地理位置提供了各类植物品种能繁殖的适中环境。这是一座占地12公顷的草药园，与Bukit Air休闲公园毗邻。园区内共收集国内外超过一千种的植物类。

8 KELAM CAVE吉林洞

Tucked away in the town of Kaki Bukit is Kelam Cave or the Cave of Darkness, the park ‘s main feature. A hanging bridge spans the entire length of this illuminated 370-metre cave, estimated to be 100 millions years old. The bridge originally served as a means of transporting ore and other supplies to the mine at Wang Tangga as well as the main access route for villagers staying in the remote Kampong Wang Kelian. Fascinating limestone formations such as flowstones,straws, gour pools and fossils greet the eye and hints of guano gather in the nostrils, as you explore its interior. It is believed to be hollowed out by the underground stream over many eons.

Your exploration extends beyond the cave exit, where the landscaped park begins. Here, you will find former storage and cooking areas, reminders of its tin mining heyday. Verdant and serene, the park is an excellent spot for camps, picnics, leisurely walks and birds watching. Located nearby is Kelam Cave II, which at 3.8km holds the record for being the longest cave system in Peninsular Malaysia.

Kuala Perlis is noted to have the best places to eat out when it comes to seafood. Laman Brasmana situated near the Kuala Perlis Jetty opposite the Putra Brasmana Hotel is a seafood paradise where one can get a variety of stylies, it is a favorite haunt for seafood lovers. Places that have been noticed like the Lynda Ikan Bakar, Restaurant Lizamat’s Ikan Bakar Kola ( Grill Fish) serves grill fish and local delicacies.

Putra Brasmana Hotel’s Samudra Bistro offers western and local dishes not forgetting live entertainment, woodball and come Saturday the Pocho pocho dance night. The Hai Thien restaurant at New Jetty Road serves steam seafood as well as local dishes.

Among seafood there is a place called Kak Su Laksa, a must try out if at Kuala Perlis. It is a dish of rice noodles dipped in spiced fish gravey with onions, cucumber, pineapple with a dash of prawn paste for flavour.

Begin your shopping spree at the two-storey Padang Bersar Arcade where a myriad of stalls and shops offers products ranging from food and clothing to handicraft as well as household items await you. Should you have an adventurous palate, head for the various food stalls for a taste of local fare.

After that, take a short drive to the duty free complex and fill up your cart with imported goods such as chocolates, perfumes, cigarettes, and liquor as well as souvenir items. All sold at attractive price. Padang Besar is also a popular stopover for visitors en route to Singapore or Thailand.

Situated along the Malaysia-Thailand border, the busting Wang Kelian Sunday Market offers a myriad of goods. Handicrafts, food, fruits, clothing, kitchen and farm equipment are among the goods available here. Visitors can visit the market without the use of a passport, if they remain within the market area, where a duty-free outlet is also available.

Lake Melati (Tasik Melati)默拉迪湖

Set upon marshy lowland, about 8km north of Kangar, Lake Melati (Tasik Melati) is the ideal place to relax in the midst of the surrounding green foliage. Unsurprisingly, Lake Melati is a favourite haunt among the locals, especially during weekends and public holidays.

The lake has about 150 sand bar islets that are only accessible by rowboats or sampans. Visitors can take a relaxing boat ride to these islets or just take a stroll along the network of elevated walkways. Benches are available in abundance along the outskirts of the lake.

Situated nearby the Snake and Reptile Farm, the park provides a camping ground, car parking facilities and all the basic amenities. Comfortable and luxurious accommodations are available to cater to the needs of visitors. There are chalets, villas, bungalows and even suites.

Bukit Chuping初平山

Near Bukit Chuping, the surrounding landscape is characterised by endless tracts of lush green sugar cane plantations covering some 22,000 hectares of land area. Sugar cane is harvested in the months of December to June. Here one can visit a museum to learn more about the sugar manufacturing processes. A tour would indeed be an educational eye-opener for those interested to find out how sugar is made from cane. There is also a sugar factory in Chuping that manufactures sugar.

来到初平山，您可以看见另一景像，那是一大片占地约22,000公顷的甘蔗园。甘蔗的收割期为 12 月至 6 月。此处也设有一间博览馆，并把完整的造糖过程一一呈现于大众。这里也逐渐成了教育旅游景点之一。在初平镇里更设有一座白糖提炼厂，将甘蔗都提炼为白糖。

The Snake And Reptile Farm蛇园

The largest snake farm in the country, the Perlis Snake and Reptile Farm is located at Sungai Batu Pahat, about 10km from Kangar. Managed by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), the farm is one of the national development projects by the Ministry of Health. It was established on the 3rd of March, 1981, by His Majesty the King, DYMM Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail. Among the objectives of the farm are to study Malaysian snakes, disseminate such information and produce anti-venom to meet local requirements for treatment of snakebites.

The Snake and Reptile Farm has a collection of over 20 species of live snakes, such as the King Cobra, the Common Cobra, the Short Pit Viper, the Malayan Krait, the Short Python, and the Banded Krait. There are also various species of dead snakes that are preserved in special glasses for the viewing of visitors.

Those who are interested to have their picture taken with their slimy friend can do so here under the supervision of the handlers. Besides snakes, there are also monitor lizards, the Small-Clawed Otter, the White-Handed Gibbon, and the Stump-Tailed Macaque, a species that can only be found in Perlis.

Besides that, this is also the perfect place for visitors who are interested to learn more about snakes and their behaviours. There are information concerning the practical purposes of snakes, facts and fallacies, first-aid, and how to avoid snakebite. The farm is normally crowded during school holidays.

这全国最大的蛇园坐落在巴朱巴辖河，离加央北部10公里。由医学研究学院管理的蛇园是马来西亚卫生部的其中一项国家级的发展计划。于1981年3月3日由当时的马来西亚元首兼玻璃市拉惹东姑赛布特拉赛哈山加马鲁莱设立的蛇园，目的是为了研究马来西亚的蛇类和爬行动物类的生态环境，并研究各种类蛇的毒性，提炼出针对各种毒性的解药等。

这里饲养了超过20品种不同的蛇、鳄鱼、鬣鳞蜥及大蜥蜴等。另外，还有蛇类的标本等供游客参观和研究用途。

游客还可以尝试在专人的协助下，体验将蛇拿着拍照。除了蛇类，游客可以观看其他的爬行动物如蜥蜴、小螯水獭、长臂猿，以及只有在玻璃市才有的猕猴品种。

这里也是爬行生态爱好者的最佳去处。很多有关蛇类的常识、实论、对蛇类的错误概念、急救和如何避免被蛇咬到等，都是很值得游客去深入了解的资讯。
