With so many restaurants to choose from in Daegu it can sometimes be daunting picking a place to eat. Luck-ily the beautiful new restaurant 55 Dining (pronounced two 5 dining) has opened its door and is the perfect location for a special dinner or even a pleasant lunch. Hidden away down a small alley this restaurant feels as if you have discovered a secret. Its inviting exterior is reminiscing of a small French bistro with a lovely out-door garden that will be extremely popular in the sum-mer months.Once you step inside this establishment, you feel as if you are transported back to a colonial French gin house. The detail that has gone into the décor is worth

a visit alone. The building has been renovated and has left the original features of the old building such as the exposed beams to make the building feel homely. The small touches such as the delicately painted plates, the flowers hung from the roof and the candles through the room give the space a comforting and romantic feel. As well as the décor the music is quiet enough to talk but also the perfect atmospheric accomplishment to the huge array of dishes you will be served. 55 Dining is unique because of its eating approach. Instead of ordering from a menu you arrive and pay 16,000w (one person) this entitles you to a 7 course meal. The menu will change every month. If the thought

of not picking your food discourages you do not be afraid. The food is prepared with fresh ingredients and promises to be to everyone’s taste. The easiest way to find the restaurant is to walk from SamDuk Fire station (삼덕소방서) There is a street that heads into downtown from Sam-Duk. Start to walk up the road but take the first very sharp left a few meters down this very small street next to the Indian café. Walk straight down this ally, past the sign for tap dancing lessons and in front of you will be a small blue building, that is 55 Dining.

Alternatively you can walk down the small road contain-ing Pasha Nightclub, walk past the night club entrance. The first right turning on your right will be a small ally way that will take you to 55 Dining.

Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too!

Just across the street from Debec Plaza in Jung-gu, lies a quaint new sugar craft cake shop called Mei-cy. Heeyoung Kim is a sugarcraftmaster, shereceived her certification from KAOS, the Korean Association of Sugarcraft in 2012. Her interest in the art of sugar decorating began on a trip to England in 2006. It start-ed off as a hobby; she was making cakes at home for her friends and family. Eventually, she found herself in Seoul getting the certification that brought Meicy into existence just this past January. You walk into Meicy and you are greeted with the bright sun from the massive windows, highlighting the cakes

that are adorning the store. It is an open and friendly en-vironment, and the shop’s name seems to fit quite well. When I asked her about the name, Heeyoung smiles warmly and says, “It was because of a trip to China”. The Chinese word for beautiful sounds like “mei”, and the word for food sounds like “shi”. You cannot deny that these cakes are nothing but beautiful. She is a one woman show,currentlyplaying all the roles as teacher, owner, and pastry chef. Lessons are available three times a day, although stu-dents can come in whenever they want with an appoint-ment. The maximumclass size is six people, giving it a

comfortable environment to learn in. One-day classes are available and cost 39,000 won for the cupcake class. For the cake class, the one-day class costs 49,000 won. For those interested in actually learning professionally, those classes are also available. The professional course class takes about 9 months, with a class occurringonce a week for 3 hours. Certifica-tion is available at the end, which would allow some-one to open up their own store. The course runs be-tween 400 to 450,000 won per month. The class was fun and relaxing, a perfect start to the week. The work station is filed with such wonderful things, my eyes are round as saucers as I sit down and wait for her to teach the class. Tools I never knew existed sit in front of me and I can smell the faint sweet scent of sugar.Heeyoung taught us how to roll fondant, and how to craft flowers out of it. It took some practice but they didn’t turn out as bad as I thought they would. Playing with the colors was also fascinating, as Heeyoung had an array of colors to choose from. We had a good time showing off our marble-style fondant, which had been made mixing two colors together.We use cookie cutters to create shapes, and we place it all on top of the chocolatecuppckaes she has provided, using orange marmalade to stick the fondant on. The room got silent as people focused on creating their cupcakes and perfecting their technique. When I asked her what she enjoys making the most, Heeyoung says flowers. They are so simple and yet rewarding to make. The most challenging thing to make is people and characters because people have a strong opinion of what their favorite characters should look like. Customers can order custom made cakes, whether it is for birthdays, or a baby’s 1st birthday party. She enjoys making cakes for Valentine’s Day and White Day, creating masterpieces filled with hearts and declarations of love.If you are looking for something unique to do in Daegu, head over and visit Heeyoung in Meicy. DistrictDown a small unassuming street is the location of the brand new concept building that is District. District is a completely new and exciting concept for Daegu. The idea is that each area of the building serves a different purpose. There is a café, Whisky lounge, a VIP area, Norabang and a Korean restaurant named Bap. The sheer amount of detail and time that has gone into the décor of this building is startling. The building resembles an old industrial warehouse that has been taken over and converted to a 1960’s low lit jazz bar. The owners designed the building from scratch and the more time you spend in the bar the more you will see. During the day the delightful music and coffee aromas fill the air, the choices for coffee are extensive including a hand drip Dutch coffee machine. There are also a large range of snacks for customers to try while they spend the afternoon chatting with friends. As the evening draws in the café is converted to a met-ropolitan bar that every young person and trend setter

will be at home in. The menu for the evening meals is delicious. The Sam Guap Sal is cooked to perfection and is the perfect mix of Korean Fusion with American additions. In the summer this will be a great place to meet friends and have a drink in the sunshine. The court yards design makes it relaxing and inviting. Hopefully in the summer you may be able to catch a showing of a movie, sports match or music video on the purpose built screen in the courtyard.A big element of this bar is the idea of space and light. The owners wanted people to not be sat on each other’s shoulders and to feel they could talk with their friends privately as well as having the huge windows all around the building to let in light and give the feeling of space. If you want an even more private space for a party or business lunch you can also rent out the private room at the back of the restaurant which feels as if you have stepped into a secret hide away. The delicate touches

such as the light bulb mirrors and red leather sofas op-posite the stone covered walls make it feel you have your own private bar for the night. Outside of the main building is the restaurant ‘Bap’. This restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients to create de-licious authentic Korean food that includes no MSG. Ev-erything that touches your plate is homemade, including the red pepper sauce. It’s worth a visit even if you aren’t interested in going for a drink.On the second floor you can find a very chic and ex-clusive single malt scotch bar. There is a stage for live music and a grammar phone for authentic music. The beautiful woman serving will make every person feel like they have entered a 1960’s New York bar.If after all these drinks, scotch and private parties you are still ready for more you can always head up to the luxury Nora Bang area to let off some steam until 2am.The building has been in construction for 3 years and opened its doors in December but it will be a hot spot

in Daegu very soon so make sure you get in there while you still can.

After you apply for the visa online, they will e-mail you an “approval” letter in 2-3 days, which you exchange for a visa upon arriving in Viet-nam. If you choose Hanoi as your destination, you are a short bus ride (1.5-2.5 hours) from Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO her-itage site featuring thousands of beautiful limestone rocks and isles that jut majestically from the wa-ter, and Sapa, a mountainous region famous for its great hiking and spectacular tiered rice terraces. 베트남에서 한국으로 돌아가는 것은 더 쉽고 그 어느 때보다 더 저렴하며, 서울/부산 출발 호치민 (구 사이공) 시 도착인 에어 아시아 비행편이 많다. 단기 여행(1주일 정도)을 계획하고 있다면 왕복 티켓이 더 이득이다. 주요 도시인 하노이나 호치민시와 그 주변 지역을 둘러볼 수 있는 충분한 시간이 될 것이다. 하노이를 목적지로 잡는다면 하롱베이와 사파에서 1시간 반에서 두시간 반 정도 소요되는 버스를 타면 된다. 하롱베이는 물에서 장엄하게 솟아오른 수천개의 아름다운 석회암과 섬이 있는 유네스코 유산이며 사파는 등산과 장대한 계단식 논으로 유명한 신악지대이다.

If you plan to fly round-trip into HCMC, you can take a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an underground network used by the Vietcong to evade Americans during the Vietnam War. If you want to get a bit fur-ther out, cheap buses can take you to a myriad of exciting places, including the lush Mekong Delta or the windy beaches of Mui Ne, which provide for ex-cellent water sports. For those with more time (I am looking at you university professors), your best bet is flying into HCMC and working your way north to Hanoi and departing from there (or vice versa). Most attrac-tions are either along the eastern coast or slightly inland. Numerous tour companies exist all over HCMC and Hanoi, especially in the backpacker

hostel and bar districts. Feel free to shop around and negotiate because there are many tour agencies looking for your business. Bus travel is very cheap and provides you with a look into the stunning rural areas of Vietnam. Winter Vacation Paradise, From K to Z

Expats living and working in Korea have long made good use of their proximity to the great winter vacation destinations of Asia, such as Thailand, India, the Phil-ippines, and Indonesia, amongst others. Waiting at the end of a path less traveled, at least from Asia, sits a remarkable destination half-a-world away.한국에서 거주하며 일하는 외국인들은 다른 곳보다도 태국, 인도, 필리핀, 인도네시아 등과 같이 아시아 지역의 멋진 겨울 휴가지에 근접하다는 장점을 잘 이용한다. 짧은 거리의 여행을 하는 여정의 끝에는, 적어도 아시아로부터는, 놀랄 만한 목적지가 지구의 반만큼 떨어져 있다.

The very sound of its name seems to slide mellifluously off your tongue. Zihuatanejo (zee-what-tan-ey-ho), con-

jures up idyllic images of time and place like Xanadu or Atlantis--apparitions of a Zen-like land filled with palm trees, full-bodied native peoples, caressing breezes and azure waters lapping at your feet. Well, that pretty much describes the Place of Women, or as it’s more com-monly known, Zihuatanejo.그 곳의 이름을 발음하는 소리는 혀에서 감미롭게 미끄러져 나온다. 지와타네호, 제네두(역주: 이상의 세계)나 아틀란티스와 같은 장소와 시간의 목가적인 이미지를 떠올리게 하는 그 이름. 야자나무, 건장한 원주민들, 어루만져주는 바람과 발을 감싸는 푸른색의 물로 가득한 선(禪)이 실현된 것 같은 육지. 글쎄, 이 정도면 여성의 장소, 지와타네호라고 더 잘 알려진 곳에 대한 충분한 설명이 된 듯 하다.

We were searching for a different winter vacation des-tination, a welcome change from Korea's winter—one that would not break the bank. Recently, we were watching the popular 1994 movie, The Shawshank Re-demption and the final scene when Red catches up with prison-escapee friend, Andy, who is rebuilding a boat on some glorious stretch of beach along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Yes, Zihuatanejo! Sign us up!

우리는 파산하지 않는 예산 내에서 한국의 추운 겨울과는 다른 색다른 겨울 휴가지를 찾고 있었다. 그러다가 최근에 인기가 많았던 1994년 영화 쇼생크 탈출을 보게 되었고, 레드가 탈옥한 친구인 앤디를 만나는 마지막 장면을 보았다. 앤디는 멕시코의 태평양 연안을 따라 펼쳐진 눈부시게 아름다운 백사장에서 보트를 고치고 있었다. 그렇다, 지와타네호! 우리는 바로 결정했다.

Zihuatanejo served as a port for the first trip made by the Spanish colonists in 1527. It later became a com-mercial and cultural navigation route that served to unify the continents of America and Asia. Today, the city of 68,000 lies comfortably along a naturally protected horseshoe shaped bay of the same name. Four beach-es, each with their own personality, stretch around the bay: Playa Principal, the most commercial of the four; Playa La Madera; Playa La Ropa, the longest and favor-ite of the tourists; and Playa Las Gatas, named after the cat shark that used to inhabit its waters.지와타네호는 1527년 스페인의 식민지 정복자들이 처음 왔을 때 항구 역할을 했던 곳이며, 후에는 아메리카와 아시아 대륙을 통합하기 위한 상업적, 문화적 항로의 역할

Truth be told, Zihuatanejo has been discovered. But unlike its busier cousin, Ixtapa, located about 3 miles north, it’s far less commercial, quieter and marches to the beat of a different drum. The pulse of Zihuatanejo emanates from its downtown area whose streets lie just off the city pier at La Playa Principal. Evenings you’ll find the area abuzz, its restaurants, commercial shops and ice-cream stalls, attracting a fascinating mix of lo-cals and expats.사실을 말하자면 지와타네호는 알려진 지는 꽤 되었다. 하지만 북쪽으로 약 5km 떨어져 있는 곳에 위치한 북적거리는 이웃동네 익스타파와는 달리 덜 상업적이고 더 조용하며 각자의 개성대로 살아가고 있다. 지와타네호의 맥박

Naturally, restaurants here serve up delicious and tan-talizing Mexican fare. The guacamole, tamales and traditional soup, Pozole, alone make the trip here worth-while. But they are just the beginning. Zihuatanejo is still a town proud of its fishing heritage. Fresh tuna, octopus and its trademark dish, red snapper, are served up daily. These delicious dishes may partially explain all the smil-ing faces along the bay most afternoons and evenings. Aside from amazing food, and the warm-hearted, in-cessantly smiling locals, Zihuatanejo is, of course, known for its amazing beaches, especially Playa La Ropa. Coconut palm trees line the nearly ¾ mile stretch of fine pink sand. With a consistent year-round daytime air temperature of about 90˚, and water temps hovering near 80˚, there’s simply nothing to complain about.환상적인 음식, 따뜻한 마음을 가진 사람들, 항상 미소를 짓는 원주민들을 제외하고라도 지와타네호는 멋진 해변으로 잘 알려져 있는데 특히 플라야 라 로파가 그렇다. 코코넛 야자수 나무들이 1.2km에 가까이 펼쳐져 있는 분홍빛 모래 위에 줄을 서 있다. 1년 내내 섭씨 30도의 낮 기온이 유지되고 수온은 23을 맴돌며 그에 대해 불평할 만한 것은 아무 것도 없다.

The Mexican culture, it seems, prides itself on striking a balance between work and relaxation. Mexico ranks 22nd on the Global Finance Happiness Scale, on the

heels of Chile, Thailand and Brazil. Korea, by way of comparison, ranks 63rd. Mexicans know how to relax and for most of us, relaxation is why we’re here. It’s that mellow spirit and understanding that if things don’t get done today, well, there’s always mañana (tomorrow). That life philosophy lies behind the smiles one sees on faces everywhere in Zihuatanejo. 멕시코 문화는 일과 휴식의 균형을 잡고 있는 것에 자부심을 가지고 있는 듯 하다. 멕시코는 세계 경제-행복 지수에서 칠레, 태국, 브라질 바로 다음으로 22위를 차지했다. 비교를 위해 알려주자면 한국은 63위를 기록했다. 멕시코인들은 제대로 휴식을 취할 줄 알며 우리 대부분에게도 휴식이 이 곳을 찾은 이유이다. 그것은 느긋한 마음과 오늘 일을 끝낼 수 없다면 언제나 마냐나(내일)이 있다라는 정신이다. 그러한 삶의 철학이 지와타네호 어디에서든 볼 수 있는 얼굴의 미소 아래에 깔려져 있다.

For those working in Korea who hail from North America or Europe, adding a vacation stop in Zihuatanejo may be easier than you think. Flights can easily be arranged through many cities in Canada and the U.S. For others,

the chance to experience this unique, still unspoiled par-adise, is well worth the trip. Hotels range from $40/night and up. Great deals can be had on condo rentals--usu-ally the longer the stay--the better the deal.북미지역이나 유럽에서 한국으로 일하러 온 사람들에게는 지와타네호를 휴가의 목적지로 삼는 것이 생각보다 쉬울 수도 있다. 캐나다와 미국의 많은 도시를 경유하는 비행편으로 쉽게 계획을 세울 수 있다. 다른 사람들은 독특하지만 아직 파괴되지 않은 이 파라다이스를 경험할 수 있는 여행이 충분히 값질 것이다. 호텔은 하룻밤에 40달러부터이고 콘도를 빌리는 것도 나쁘지 않은데 오래 머물수록 가격이 저렴해진다.

Zihuatanejo has somehow escaped the tourist hordes over the years. Come, relax, and let its magic seduce you.왜인지는 모르겠지만 몇 년 간 많은 관광객 무리들이 지와타네호를 찾지 않았다. 그러니 이 곳으로 오라. 휴식도 취하라. 그리고 이 곳의 마법이 당신을 홀릴 수 있도록 허락하라.

A Tour of Suncheon

EunYoung and I went on a one-day tour to southern Suncheon. For 35,000 won (~$35) we visited three different sites. The first site was Seonamsa Temple (선암사), a temple located on the west end of Mount Jo-gyesan. With a packed tour bus, we climbed out and took a morning hike to the temple.필자는 친구인 은영과 남쪽에 있는 순천으로 하룻동안 여행을 다녀왔다. 3만5천원으로 세 곳의 여행지를 다녀왔는데 첫번째로 간 곳은 조계산 서쪽에 있는 절, 선암사였다. 사람들로 가득 찬 버스를 타고 가서 절을 향해 아침 등산을 시작했다.

We climbed down to the bottom and took pictures under Seungseon Bridge. Unfortunately, once we were down there and had crossed the stream, there was no way we were going get back unless we got soaking wet. I like to imagine I’m cool enough to cross rivers and climb things like some kind of action hero (which is how I was able to cross in the first place), but no … I’m in my late 20′s and definitely not agile and thus we were stuck.우리는 산 아래를 향해 걸어가다가 승선교 아래에서 사진을 찍었다. 아래로 내려가서 개울을 건넜는데 불행히도 발을 적시지 않고는 돌아올 길이 없었다. 필자는 마치 액션

히어로처럼 강을 건너고 산을 오르는 것을 충분히 할 수 있다고(처음에 개울을 건널 수 있었던 것처럼) 생각했다. 하지만 아니었다. 필자의 나이가 이미 20대 후반이라 당연히 날렵하지 않았으며 결과적으로 우리는 오도가도 못하게 되었다.From the distance, a Korean gentleman called out to us and asked if we needed help. Like in a drama, he slung his DSLR all dreamily to his side and di-rected us on how to climb the rock and he took our hands and caught us when we jumped. We told his girlfriend that he was such a hero, and she giggled.멀리서 한 친절한 한국인 남자분이 혹시 도움이 필요한 지 큰 소리로 물었다. 그리고는 마치 드라마에서처럼 DSLR 카메라를 그 쪽에다 던져두고 어떻게 바위를 올라가는 지 알려주었고, 손도 잡아주었으며 점프를 할 때는 우리를 잡아주었다. 그 분의 여자친구에게 그 분이 마치 슈퍼맨같다고 이야기 하자 키득거리며 웃었다.

Our next stop was Naganeupseong Folk Village (낙안읍성민속마을), located in Jeollanam-do Prov-ince. There’s a castle and about 100 families still live there! Their laundry hangs outside, you see


vegetable gardens being grown, and people are going about their every day life. I had never seen straw roofs on Korean architecture before, and it was quite pleas-ant! The castle walls are well preserved, it’s so beautiful from up there. EunYoung showed me the torture devic-es they used in the old days, and we even got to see a cute pony.우리의 다음 목적지는 전라남도의 낙안읍성민속마을이었다. 약100여가구가 여전히 읍성 안에 살고 있었다! 빨래가 마당에 널려있고, 채소가 텃밭에서 자라고 있고, 사람들은 평범하게 일상생활을 하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 필자는 한 번도 한국의 초가지붕을 본 적이 없었기에 무척이나 기분이 좋았다. 성벽은 잘 보존되어 있었고 성벽 위에서의 바라보는 풍경은 아름다웠다. 은영은 옛날에 사용되었던 고문 기구를 보여주었고, 귀여운 조랑말도 볼 수 있었다.

We then went to the Suncheon Bay Ecological Park. The reeds are beyond beautiful, gorgeous against the bright blue sky. It is the biggest colony of reeds in Korea. There are about 140 species of birds including the snipe, wild duck, and wild goose. I saw none of them unfortunately.

For lunch we had deep-fried cockle (Kkomak Tangsuy-ook 꼬막탕수육), which was deliiiiiiicious! Cockle is the delicacy of the region. They used the regular recipe for the Chinese-style tangsooyook to recreate this dish and it was delicious! I enjoyed it better than the pork ver-sion. We then walked through the reeds and hiked Mt. Yongsan Observatory. It took us 40 minutes to hike up there, and as we watched one of the most beautiful view I have ever seen, we realized we had just 30 minutes to get back on the bus. Friends, I have no idea how I made it down that mountain in 10 minutes without breaking some bones. Suncheon was amazing. I would have loved to stay there for the weekend rather than rush through everything in just one day. Go to Suncheon, it is beyond amazing and a perfect place to live the last days of autumn.그 다음으로는 순천만자연생태공원으로 갔다. 갈대들은 아름다움 그 이상이었으며 새파란 하늘과 대비되어 환상적이었다. 이 곳은 한국에서 가장 큰 갈대 군락지이며 도요새, 야생오리, 야생거위 등을 포함한140여 종의 새들이 살고 있다. 안타깝게도 필자는 그 중에 단 하나도 보지 못 했다. 점심으로는 꼬막탕수육을 먹었는데 정말 둘이 먹다

가 하나가 죽어도 모를 맛이었다. 고막은 순천의 별미이다. 탕수육을 만드는 요리법을 사용하여 꼬막탕수육으로 재탄생시켰는데 맛있었다. 돼지고기로 만든 탕수육보다 더 나았다. 점심을 먹고는 갈대밭을 지나 용산전망대로 올라갔다. 전망대까지는 40분 정도 등산을 했고 필자가 본 가장 아름다운 풍경 중 하나를 보면서 문득 버스로 돌아가기까지 겨우 30분이 남았다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 뼈를 부러뜨리지 않고 어떻게 10분만에 산을 내려올 수 있는 지는 아직도 불가사의다. 순천은 정말 경이로웠다. 하룻동안 급하게 모든 것을 둘러보기 보다는 주말 동안 머물렀다면 좋았을 것이다. 순천으로 가라. 그 곳은 늦가을을 보내기에 경이롭고 완벽한 장소 그 이상이다.

To call Maisan ‘a’ mountain is somewhat misleading. Mountains are normally triangular-ish in shape and rise gradually to a summit. Maisan has not one, but two summits. And these are not triangular, but steep and conical shaped. This distinctive shape gives the park its nickname ‘Horse Ear Mountain’. Approaching from a distance it’s easy to see why. At the time I couldn’t help but wonder, was there more to the horse somewhere beneath my feet?마이산을 ‘산’이라고 부르는 것은 다소 오해의 소지가 있다. 산은 보통 삼각형이며 꼭대기까지 서서히 높이가 올라간다. 마이산은 그렇지 않고 오직 봉우리 두 개만이 있을 뿐이다. 그리고 봉우리도 삼각형이 아니며 매우 가파른 원뿔모양이다. 이 독특한 형태로 인해 ‘마이산’이라는 이름이 붙게 되었는데 멀리서 보면 왜 그러한지 눈으로 확인할 수 있다. 당시에는 필자의 발 밑 아래 어딘가에 말이 있는 게 아닌가 하고 밖에 생각할 수 없었다.

Maisan National Park

According to my Lonely Planet, this bizarre formation was created millions of years ago, when tectonic move-ments thrust conglomerate rock, a rarity in Korea, up-ward. The rock is very hard and looks like a cemented mix of fragmented pebbles. The higher of the two sum-mits is the female peak ‘Ammaisan,’ which is 685m tall. The Easterly male peak, ‘Sutmaisan,’ is slightly shorter, at 678m. Whilst Maisan may be small, it certainly has

aesthetic quality.론리 플래닛에 따르면 이러한 기이한 형태는 수백만년 전 구조적인 지각의 이동이 역암을 위로 들어올렸을 때 형성되었다고 하는데 이는 한국에서는 찾아보기 힘든 지형이라고 한다. 바위는 매우 단단하며 자갈의 파편이 시멘트와 섞인 것처럼 보인다. 두 봉우리 중 더 높은 것이 ‘암마이산’이며, 685m이다. 동쪽에 있는 봉우리는 ‘숫마이산’이며 678m로 암마이산보다 다소 낮다. 마이산은 작기는 하지만 미학적으로 봤을 때 아름답다.A short walk from the park entrance takes you to the start of a trail that bisects the mountain. Very quickly this becomes a well maintained staircase, which steadi-ly climbs upward. The staircase is quite easy and it didn’t trouble any of the adjumas I met on the way. After a short ascent we reached the midway point between the two peaks, where the route briefly plateaus. It was at this point that my friend (handsome Rob) and I decided to try and explore a little. You see the walk between the peaks is really easy, disappointingly easy in fact. We wanted a proper hike. Walking around one of the peaks we followed a metal platform which led to an upward trail. At that time the route was off-limits, and clearly had been for some time. This is where we had to be cheeky and jump the barricade.이 곳에서 필자의 친구(잘 생긴 롭)과 필자는 약간의 도전을 해보기로 했다. 봉우리 사이의 산행은 매우 쉬웠는데 사실 실망할 정도로 쉬웠다. 우리는 제대로 된 등산을 하고 싶었다. 봉우리 중 하나의 주위를 걷다가, 정상을 향해 나 있는 길을 따라 있는 철제 플랫폼을 따라 걸었다. 그 때 길은 출입금지구역 안에 있었고, 확실히 무언가 결정을 해야 할 때였다. 그 때야말로 건방지게 바리케이드를 넘어 가야 할 때였다.

The scramble to the top was steep – really steep. We had to climb up using our hands and a support rope which had clearly seen better days. I was genuinely concerned that it could have snapped on us at any time. I imagine the route had been closed off because it was so dangerous. A fall here could certainly be fatal. After a 30 minute scramble we reached the top, sweaty and with sore forearms. Well I felt that way. Handsome Rob was fine – he climbs mountains for fun.산으로 가는 거친 길은 가팔랐다. 정말로. 손으로 기거나 확실하게 상태가 안 좋아 보이는 밧줄을 이용해서 올라가야만 했다. 필자는 언제든지 밧줄이 끊어져 떨어질 수도 있었기에 정말 오로지 등산에 집중했다. 그리고 등산로가 정말 위험했기 때문에 폐쇄가 되었던 것이라고 생각했다. 이 곳에서의 추락은 확실하게 치명적일 수 있었다. 30분 정도의 고된 등반 후에 땀에 절고 팔뚝은 근육통으로 욱신거리는 채로 정상에 도착했다. 적어도 필자는 그렇게 느꼈다. 잘생긴 롭은 멀쩡했다. 롭은 그냥 단순히 재미로 등산을 한다. The top was surprisingly flat. Flat and isolated. Perfect after such a strenuous ascent. Unfortunately the unre-lenting yellow dusk had descended on Korea in force that day and we couldn’t see further than a few miles. At least we got a great view of the other peak. After 15 minutes we descended back to the trail.놀랍게도 정상은 편평했다. 편평했고, 고립되어 있었다. 몹시도 고되었던 등반 후 휴식을 취하기에 완벽했다. 안타깝게도 그 날 대량의 미세먼지가 한국으로 몰려들어서 몇km 이상 보이지가 않았다. 최소한 다른 봉우리에서 멋진 풍경을 감상할 수 있었고 우리는 15분쯤 지나서 산길로 하산했다.

Back on the trail we headed to the temple. Tapsa Temple is a curious little complex. There are small shrines, stone pagodas and temple buildings – your usual Korean fare. What’s really interesting however, are the dozens of rock panicles which curve upwards in near perfect uniformity. Apparently, a scholar called Gapryong Lee started the process in 1885 and built these miraculous towers one stone at a time. What’s more, he didn’t use any cement or mortar. They’re stay up purely by rock-on-rock friction thanks to the skill of the architect. Some are huge – stretching 15m into the air – and there are nearly enough to get lost in. 으로 된 수십개의 돌무더기가 거의 완벽하게 똑같이 나선형으로 위로 솟아 있었다는 것이다. 처사 이갑룡이 1885년부터 한 번에 돌을 하나하나씩 쌓아서 이 신비스러운 탑들을 만들었다고 한다. 더 신기한 것은 시멘트나 회반죽을 전혀 이용하지 않았다는 것이다. 건축기술 덕분에 순수하게 돌 사이의 마찰 저항만으로 탑이 서 있는 것이다. 어떤 탑은 공중으로 15m나 솟아 있을 정도로 크고, 거의 길을 잃을 수 있을 정도로 많은 탑들이 있다. 확실히 탑사까지 가 볼 만하다.

Useful InformationMaisan is located in Jeollabuk province, about 30 miles east of the provincial capital Jeonju. It is reached via the nearby town of Jinan. To get to Jinan, take a bus from Daegu (2.5 – 3 hours). From Jinan, local buses run every 40 mins to the park entrance. Admission is W2000.

<도움이 되는 정보>마이산은 전라북도에 있으며 전주에서 동쪽으로 약 80km정도 떨어져 있다. 가까운 도시인 진안을 통해 갈 수 있고, 대구에서 2시간 30분~3시간 정도 버스를 타면 진안에 도착한다. 진안에서는 버스를 타고 40분 정도 달리면 입구에 도착하고 입장료는 2천원이다.

Located on the backside of Apsan Park in Dalseo-gu is Chung-yong-san (Green Dragon Mountain) and Weol-gwang Waterside Park. Chung-yong-san offers good in-ner-city hiking while Weolgwang Waterside Park is suit-able for anyone that wants to enjoy walking or nature. Both are easily accessible from Sang-in Station on the red subway line with a short bus transfer to the park or the starting/finishing points of the trail to the mountain.

달서구 앞산 뒤쪽에 위치한 청룡산은 도시 내에서 등산하기에 매우 좋은 산이며 월광 수변공원은 걷거나 자연을 즐기기에 매우 좋은 장소이다. 두 장소 모두 지하철1호선 (빨간라인) 상인역에서 하차하여 버스로 갈아 타고 조그만 오면 등산로 시작점 내지 도착점을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다.

Green Dragon Mountain:

Chung-yong-san has 14km of well-marked trails that seem much farther out of the city than they really are. The course is essentially a semi-loop trail situated be-hind Apsan Park. The course is a moderate hike that will take you to the peak of the mountain on a ridgeline and into a valley or vice versa. One of the surprising things about this trail is the quiet and solitude after the first few kilometers unlike other trails within the city limits. As soon as you get past the throngs of daily walkers you pretty much have the trail to yourself. A luxury of this course are well-marked and groomed trails which can be tackled by almost anyone. Weolgwang Waterside Park, and the other at a nearby valley. Depending on where you want to start, both trailheads lead to the top of the mountain at about the same time and distance. Getting to the trail head: There are many unofficial trails leading to the main trail but the best starting points are the bridge that leads to the reservoir at the park and the valley between Apsan and Chung-yong-san at Dalseo-gu Youth Training Center. If you decide to start at the park, walk to the reservoir and cross it until you see the hiking course map at the end of the reservoir. If you start at the youth center, follow the pedestrian bridge over the highway until you reach the trail, but make sure you keep veering right when you get into the valley. Numerous unofficial trails can confuse even the well oriented hiker. Personally, I prefer the wa-terside park trailhead because of the well-marked start-ing point and after getting on the trail it is hard to get lost.

청룡산:

청룡산은 약 14키로의 완만한 길로 시작하여 앞산공원 뒤로 연결된 등산로로, 대체로 완만한 능선으로 꼭대기까지 올라갈 수 있다. 도시의 다른 등산로와 달리 처음 몇 키로

만 지나면 등산로가 매우 한적하며 고즈넉한 것이 특징이다. 매일 오는 등산객들을 지나치면 등산로는 거의 혼자 차지라 할 정도이다. 이 등산로의 가장 큰 장점은 아주 잘 정비되어 있고 누구나 즐길수 있다는 것이다. 꼭대기로 가는 두 주요 등산로는 월광 수변공원과 근처 계곡에서 시작하는데 어디에서 시작하는 간에 두군 데 모두 꼭대기기까지 거의 시간과 거리는 비슷하게 걸린다. 주요 등산로까지 가는 데는 많은 작은 등산로가 있으나 공원의 호수 다리쪽에서 시작하거나 앞산과 청소년수련관 옆 청룡산 사이의 계곡에서 시작하는 방법이 있다. 청소년 수련관에서 시작한다면 고속도로 위 다리를 지나 등산로에 다다를 수 있고 계곡에 도착 후 계속해서 오른쪽으로 가야만 한다. 경험이 많은 등산객이라 하더라도 많은 작은 등산로에서 헤맬 수도 있다. 개인적으로 시작점이 명확하고 등산로도 쉽게 따라갈 수 있는 수변공원쪽을 추천한다.

are available. During the summer months there is a wa-ter show choreographed to music that runs from May to October and runs almost every hour from 11am to 9pm. During the summer it can get very crowded due to the intercity location, so anyone who likes to run or jog should come early. Opposite the park there are the usual chain and independent coffee houses sprinkled among restaurants that serve typical Korean cuisine, like roast duck, pork and noodles. Any of these plac-es are suitable for a meal, but the most popular seems to be Nak Dong Barbeque Duck near the far end of the park. This restaurant does a pretty good roasted duck on skewers tableside but little or no English is spoken. An interesting short excursion can be taken by exiting the park at the far end and walking five minutes through a small village. There is a 400 year old tree and a small park at the end of the village. After visiting here numer-ous times there seems to be some kind of tradition of leaving offerings of alcohol or food at the base of the tree trunk. Although the meaning of these offerings is a

mystery it is interesting to see some old traditions alive in the city. It’s not often you see a 400 year old tree in the city!

등산을 그다지 즐기지 않는다면 산책도 할수 있고, 농구장 베트민턴장, 놀이터가 있는 월광 수변공원을 찾아보길. 산자락 아래에 호수를 따라 걷는 코스는 약 1킬로미터 정도로 더 짧은 코스도 가능하다. 여름에는 음악분수가 운영되며 5월에서 10월에는 오전 11시부터 오후 9시까지 매시간 분수쇼를 볼수 있다. 도심 한가운데 위치해 있어 여름에는 꽤 많은 사람들로 붐비므로 조깅이나 뛰기를 원하는 사람은 좀더 일찍 오는 편이 낫다. 공원 반대편에는 커피숍과 오리, 돼지고기, 국수등과 같은 것을 맛볼수 있는 많은 식당들이 즐비하다. 대부분 한끼 식사에 충분하며 그 중 공원끝에 위치한 ‘낙동 오리’ 식당이 가장 인기있는 듯하다. 훈제오리고기 바베큐와 정갈한 반찬을 맛볼수 있으나 영어의사 소통은 거의 불가능하다. 공원을 나서서 산자락쪽으로 5분 정도 마을을 거니면 400년된 거목을 마을끝 작은 공원에서 만날 수 있다. 여러 번을 가보면서 술

Dae Hwan Kim Set for World Title Fight

Over the last few years, there is no doubting that the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Korea has been on the rise in conjunction with its rapid growth worldwide. This sport is sure to grab the attention of the Korean public on March 14th, as one of their own, Dae Hwan Kim travels to Malaysia to fight in a world title bout.

The event, known as ONE FC: WAR OF NATIONS will attract over 10,000 fans to the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur with Kim’s Bantamweight fight against Filipino superstar Kevin Belingon being arguably the most an-ticipated fight on the night. With 90%+ of the market share, ONE Fighting Championship is Asia's largest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization.

In a recent interview, Kim expressed his delight at being a member of ONE FC, ‘’now I am signed up for the ONE FC, I am very happy. The staff, competition manage-ment and enthusiastic spectators are all perfect. It is a great organization which has a bright future.’’

Kim went onto explain that he already has some previ-ous successes while fighting abroad, ‘’I fought against Japans Koji Yoshida at Gladiator 25 which was held at the Differ Ariake Colosseum, in Tokyo. This fight ended in a draw. Besides that, I knocked out Yusuke Gondai in the first round (1:52 knee and punches) at Gladiator 58 which was held in Osaka. My last fight with ONE FC was in Manila, Philippines and it was the largest au-dience I have ever fought in front of. I was delighted to come out on top in this fight against a very tough oppo-

nent in Thanh Vu but now I am ready to test my abilities even further in Malaysia.’’

After an exhilarating bout against Vu, that featured tech-nical precision and exciting exchanges, Kim emerged with the victory to go ten fights undefeated. Kim’s broth-er, who he states is his main inspiration has also had quite a successful fighting career, ‘’my elder brother, Dae-ryeong is an active fighter too. Besides being my manager, trainer and the director of the gym where I be-long to, he is also a champion of Japan Gladiator and KAMMA (KOREA ALL MMA) for 169lbs (77kg). He is a very inspiring person and I have learned a lot from his exuberant imagination.’’

Kim, who once won a bout with a broken hand, is de-termined to be a huge success with ONE FC and his dream world title fight would be in Korea, ‘’I want to be a legend. I want to defeat the strongest fighters in the best organization. ONE FC is growing very fast and I want to be their champion as they become the best in the world too. I want a shot at the title against current ONE FC Bantamweight champion, Bibiano Fernandes in Korea. This is my main goal.’’

Apart from his own success, Kim he believes that the future of MMA in Korea is very promising with a lot of young stars, both male and female emerging in the country, ‘’Keep an eye out for Jung Je Yun, Doo Ri Song in the male category and Chan Mi Jeon and Sung Eun Kim in the female category of MMA. They all have very bright futures ahead of them, but for now, be sure to cheer me on as I represent not only myself but also South Korea in this world title fight,’’

The Right Stuff - Matt Root

Many foreigners living in Daegu try to maintain their hobbies and interests from home, while going about in their day to day lives. Everything from cy-cling to acting to craft-making, Daegu has an abun-dance of opportunities to match nearly any interest. Matt Root is no different. Having studied film and audio at University College Falmouth in England, Matt arrived in Daegu two and a half years ago to teach English. “I came here and wanted to do my own films, but I couldn’t find anyone to shoot them for me. So, I got my own camera and just started doing it.”

His first short film shot in Daegu was Azaleas. Filmed in February 2012, Azaleas features an all-Korean cast and tells the story of a woman who leaves her boyfriend after first ignoring and then realizing her boyfriend is cheating. The 9-min-ute short film is narrated in Korean, but subtitled in English. It was filmed entirely in Daegu though was comprised of a cast primarily from Seoul and hired through Castnet (see link below). The film was produced by Ka-Yung Lee, who was originally hired only for the translation of the script. She sub-sequently lent her voice to the narration of the film.

He followed up Azaleas with Alone one year later. This time dipping into a local talent pool from the Daegu Theatre Troupe, the 9-minute Alone tells the story of a man suffering from the death of his loved one and a personal guilt in not having prevented her fate. Alone was filmed between January and March of 2013. Alone was also screened at the Daegu Independent Short Film Festival in the fall of 2013. Among a crowd of over 100 viewers, Matt took the stage at the screening to discuss his films

and answer questions from the audience.

Getting filming equipment is relatively easy in Daegu. He purchased his first camera downtown and for Aza-leas, rented lights and microphones from the Keimyung University Media Center on the Myeong-deok campus. Matt currently uses a Canon C100, 3-foot slider rail, and a Manfrotto tripod for his shoots.

This year, Matt is consumed with working on a docu-mentary about the Dokdo islands dispute between Ko-rea and Japan. He has partnered with friend and Amer-ican documentary filmmaker Matt Koshmrl to produce an exploration into the international perspective of the dispute. Matt says: “We want to make a documentary to more of an international audience. It’s not pro-Korean. It’s not pro-Japanese….I think a lot of international peo-ple will be more interested in it than Korean people. For them [Koreans], there is no dispute, so it’s case closed for them.” Principal filming has begun already, with trips and interviews conducted in Ulleung-do island, a step-ping stone to Dokdo. Later this summer, filming of Dok-do protests in Seoul and the counter argument in Japan

is planned to be filmed. “I’m really looking forward to this project,” Matt says. “I think it’s why I’ve held off on doing my own stuff now.”

Independent filmmaking is easy in Daegu. Matt has found that getting permissions to shoot people and film in various locations has been met with relative ease. Anyone looking to follow in his footsteps and dabble in this exciting hobby might best follow his advice: “If someone were to come here looking to do film work, I would recommend they get in contact with the film community already here.”

One foreigners’ Journey to Business Success

Locals, as well as long time foreigners of the city may recall something of an odd sight that used to be a fixture of downtown scene in Dongsung-ro area. No, it was not a popular bar, a hot clothing store or a must have dish at a restaurant, but rather a scene of people gathered around a man on the street.

The man was of Senegalese descent, and the scene in which he created was one of curiosity and charm, surprise and wonder. The man was a dealer of silver jewelry and other trinkets, and with his trademark hat and black cloth, he could command the attention of lit-erally hundreds of passers-by.

Kebe Lamine (also known as David to many locals) came to Korea in 2000. Upon the urging of his brother who was doing business in Seoul at the time, “David” left Europe where he was a dealer and moved to Daegu to ply his trade and sell his wares. In those early years, David would find a spot on the street of Dongsung-ro, unroll his mat with mostly silver jewelry inside, and go to work.

And while there is (or was back then) no shortage of jewelry stores in the area, David was a fascination of the locals at the time. In those days, it was a very rare sight in Daegu for a foreigner to speak even an intermediate level of Korean, but there was David, a

tall, strong, and dark foreigner not only speaking Korean, but the local dialect as well while he dealt with what seemed to be an endless exchange of money and jewelry among the crowd. People would form around him just to see what all the fuss was about, to hear his Korean, to watch him in action as he talked, joked, and negotiated with buyers.

The area is a much different place now than it was back then, and in 2008 when the city began expansion and beautifica-tion projects to make the area more pe-destrian friendly, street vendors such as David were forced to move elsewhere. Rather than finding another street for his mat, he chose to stay in the area with a legitimate store, which was located on the small side street behind McDonalds. Over the years as the area developed

however, rent prices increased and David moved his store several times, including to the Beomeo area and others.

14 years from the start, David is a fixture of the foreign community in Daegu. Married, and with two children, he continues to sell his imported goods and accessories straight from Senegal in the city. With plans to expand small stores to other cities and hotspots in the country,

it is safe to say David will be around for many years to come.

The “Africa Shop” (written in Korean characters as “아프리카 샵” is located near exit 11 of the Metro Center Underground Shopping area at Banwoldang station.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Daehan News / Two PpulGrilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided com-pliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls shel-tering you from the elements. Pic&iqVIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reser-vation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. Kim Gwang-suk RoadNot far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

GajokGajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy!
