Hi Daegu,

March 2015 has arrived and with it comes another issue of the Daegu Compass. It has been almost 4 years to the month that we began our journey. Hopefully, we have helped you navigate your way through Daegu, South Korea and Asia. I have had the privilege and honor to meet so many fascinat-ing people and help them tell their stories. Each person and story is unique and I cherish the oppor-tunity to be able to be part of everyone’s lives. We have another big year and many more adventures to share with everyone in Daegu and beyond. So keep reading, keep writing and keep in touch! This month we have some amazing travel stories and reviews of places to eat, drink and experience the beauty of Korea. As always, we want to thank everyone who has and is contributing to the Compass. We also need to thank our sponsors who help us make the Daegu Compass a reality. Without everyone’s support and help, we could never hoped to achieve and sustain Daegu’s only English and Korean information guide. Thanks again! Best,Yuri Lee and the Daegu Compass Team

Stunning Desserts in a Classy Cafe

I’m Paul B.A.R.I.S.T.A

I first tried I’m Paul because a good friend of mine rec-ommended it to me as an awesome dessert spot—she has great taste in food and restaurants and hasn’t steered me wrong yet! I walked in to the place on a Sat-urday afternoon and was immediately impressed with the bright, welcoming atmosphere and the gorgeous desserts displayed in the case before me.

The owner of I’m Paul (Minyoung Lee, known as Kate to her English-speaking friends), came out of the back to assist us with our orders. I chose the Oreo Chocolate Mousse cake and now acknowledge that I am an addict. It is quite apparent that Kate chooses her ingredients (and recipes) carefully, ensuring she delivers a high quality product to her customers.

Kate was kind enough to provide me with a little back-ground on the cafe (and herself), information on their current offerings, and future plans for I'm Paul:케이트는 카페(와 그녀)에 대한 뒷이야기, 현재 내고 있는 메뉴에 대한 정보, 아임폴에 대한 계획에 대해 들려줄 정도로 친절했다.

Me: Are you the sole owner of I’m Paul the B.A.R.I.S.T.A?Kate: Yes. I'm the owner of the store but I also work as an interior designer as my day job.My brother, a barista, founded the first store… near Kei-Myung University and this is the second store where I operate a baking studio and other day to day duties as an owner. I also did the interior design by myself for this store.

Me: Where did you learn to cook such great des-serts?Kate: There's a Korean old saying that goes like "Compliments make even whales dance."Thanks for such a compliment, but I am not going to dance. I majored in interior design at Parsons in New York. During the years, I had tried many good desserts fromgreat restaurants and always thought someday I would make my own. I even attended some baking and cooking classes. That inspired me in a way a lot…

Me: Why did you want to open a café in Daegu?Kate: Daegu is my hometown. I came to Daegu after several years in Seoul when I came back from NY. When I did, my brother was already working as a barista and an owner of his own cafe and it seemed to be a good idea to making matching desserts to my brother's cof-fee. That idea and my dream about introducing my own desserts to customers in a cafe where I designed were the motivations to open this store. New York might have been the best place but Daegu seemed the second best place for me. It has been only 3 months since I opened the store, but I am enjoying it every day. How could it be better when I have my own store and customers who love it?

Me: I hear you will start offering cooking classes, can you offer any details?Kate: I'm planning it in the near future. Currently, I'm the only one who makes desserts in my store so I only do the employee classes for our stores. When we hire enough baking staffs, I will be able to offer those class-es to public and I am looking forward to it. But for now, I can only say sorry to all those customers asking the same question.

Me: What is your favorite dessert that you make?Kate: Every dessert I make has its own history so it's very hard for me to pick one. But If I must, I will recommend chocolate-based desserts, which requires very complicated processes, because I'm very picky to choose which chocolate I use in my store. Valrhona (which is basically tiramisu with french cocoa powder), Oreo choco mousse cake with Belgian dark choco, Ga-teau chocolate cake are my favorites. And don't forget to try our banana pudding, which I try my best to re-produce the taste of magnolia cupcake banana pudding from my NY days. I dare to say ours is even better!

Me: Is there anything else we should know?Kate: The cafe has been open only 3 months and there are lots of other sorts of desserts that I am plan-ning to introduce as soon as we hire more baking staffs. And I bet many customers will love them than ever. And I promise I will offer the baking classes soon to many loving customers so that they can also experience the pleasure of making theirown desserts that made me fall in love with this des-serts business in the first place.

I’ve been back to I’m Paul several times, pretty much anytime I’m craving some good chocolate. I’ve taste-tested many other desserts, thanks to the kind-ness of my friends, but always seem to go back to the Oreo Chocolate Mousse cake. I can definitely recom-

mend the Cheesecake and Strawberry Shortcake. The Banana Pudding is fantastic-and plenty other people agree as they are regularly sold out! Thank you Kate for designing my favorite place for dessert and coffee in Daegu!

From the road, one has to wonder; “Is that a temple or is that a teahouse?” The 100-year-old Teahouse, which is located in the Palgongsan area, looks like a temple but most certainly is a teahouse. While I doubt the building is a hundred years old, it does give the impression that having tea here will emulate a journey back in time.

In Korea, where coffee shops reign supreme, it is re-freshing to find a place that only serves tea. The menu is heavily focused on herb teas, but green, oolong and pu'er teas are available. From the moment, you open

the door the strong aroma of cinnamon and herbs over-whelms the senses. This must be from the signature “100 Year Tea.” I am sure the intended meaning of the name is: drinking this tea you will live to be a 100 years old. The tea is made of 12 different herbs and almost has a medicinal taste that might help you achieve those predicted 100 years. I enjoyed it even though it did have that strong oriental medicine flavor. I also tried the green tea, which was served with a traditional tea set. Our waiter explained that we should pour the hot water into the water bowl and wait one minute for the water to slightly cool before infusing the tea in the pot. After a few minutes of steeping, you can enjoy the tea. I enjoyed the green tea’s light fragrance and the fact that it could be steeped multiple times. It is relaxing to go

through the process of making tea while enjoying the ambiance of the teahouse. There are 15 different teas on offer ranging from 6,000W to 7,000W. The menu consists of the house specialty 100 year tea, mountain berry, date, pomegranate, arrowroot, cin-namon, rose and chrysanthemum, to name a few. The menu is entirely in Korean, so a little help from a Korean friend or your smartphone might be useful.

Nowadays most coffee shops have modern sleek in-teriors, but the 100-year-old teahouse gives the sense that you are having a beverage in natural surroundings. The interior is natural wood with simple but comfortable chairs and tables. Traditional music along with Hanji lamps give a calming feel that allows a person to relax and want to linger and enjoy the smells of herbs and sense of being in a traditional Korean wooden home. After enjoying your tea, you can stroll in the garden and view various kinds of teaware on display both inside and outside the main building.

Tip: Traveling by car is the easiest way to reach the teahouse, but a public bus heading to Gasan Mountain Fortress should get you there. This would not be the easiest of trips from Daegu, but it would be possible to hike in the morning and enjoy a cup of tea in the af-ternoon.

Spring BlingCherry Blossom Experiences

Written and photographed by Laura Jarman / Translated by Yujeong Lee

After a long, cold winter, there is nothing more joyous than witnessing the first buds flowering on the many cherry blossom trees scattered across the country. Not only is it a beautiful sight, but it also means that spring has finally arrived, and with it, warmer temperatures, short sleeves, the end of hibernation and a huge de-crease in your gas bill (score!). Spring is also the start of some amazing festivals in Korea, one of them being the Cherry Blossom Festival

in Jinhae. It’s one of the many towns in Korea that is absolutely blanketed by cherry blossoms between late March and early April. Every year visitors from all over the country flock here during the start of spring to wit-ness this amazing sight. The festival was first held on 13 April, 1952, as a small ceremony commemorating Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a Korean naval hero who played an important role during the Imjin War. Today it is one of the largest festivals in the country with about 2 million visitors.

The festival takes place over 10 days so there is plenty of time to go and see it. Alternatively, you can dodge the crowds and go up before the official start. Sure, you miss out on music performances by Kpop starts, a street parade and fireworks show but, if you’re only interested in seeing the trees and taking advantage of the street food stalls (they set up early for people like me), then it’s perfect. There are cherry blossom trees all over Jinhae but the key thing is to find the famous ‘Cherry Blossom Sites’ that are designated specifically for the festival. You can find a couple of maps online, which I would suggest downloading beforehand so you can plan a route for the day. Some of the sites are Jangboksan Sculpture Park,

Jinhae NFRDI Environment Eco-Park, Jehwangsan Park and Anmin Hill. The most popular, however, and by far the most romantic (because hey…we’re in Korea and it’s all about the love here) are the Gyeonghwa Station and Yeojwacheon Stream (which was also recom-mended by CNN Go). If you are stressed for time then I would highly recom-mend going straight to Yeojwacheon Stream. Even the walk up to the stream provides a hundred different photo opportunities of gorgous pink and white speckled blos-soms, which from a distance, resemble giant balls of ‘cotton candy’. The beauty of the surrounding scenery is picture perfect, and just when you think you’ve seen some of the most breathtaking Cherry Blossoms you turn the corner and reach Yeojwacheon Stream. Wow!

There are two reasons why the views at Yeojwacheon Stream are the most sought after in Jinhae. The first is related to why most sought after sights in Korea come into being…two words – Korean Drama! The location of the bridge on the stream is where two leading char-acters of a popular drama series (called ‘Romance’) first met and ever since the episode was aired, the bridge instantly became popular and widely known as ‘Romance Bridge’. Couples flock here in the spring-time to recreate that magical moment and have their photo on the bridge. The other reason, however, is a far simpler one – the location is magical!

Page 24: March 2015 The Daegu Compass

From above the small flowing stream, wooden decking lines a path about 1.5 kilometres long. Along both sides of the stream, cherry blossom trees are lined up next to each other forming a natural canopy over your head. Contrasting against the white and pale pink of the trees above are charming brightly coloured woven lanterns. In a section of the stream last year were rows of bright-ly coloured umbrellas suspended in the air which were quite a sight. There is no doubt that the location really is one of the most enchanting places to see the cher-ry blossoms and no photographs can do it justice. I’m glad I chose to come outside of the festival days though as the space is really small and was already crowded when I was there.

Once you’ve finished all obligatory photographs of the trees, lanterns and of course, a cute pose on ‘romance bridge’, you can take advantage of some delicious street food and drinks from the many stalls lining the road on either side of the stream. At night the entire section is lit up with all the lanterns to create an even more magical feel. On my visit last year I didn’t stay until the night, as I was certain that frostbite was kicking in from trodding around in the cold with soaking wet shoes. I rather opt-ed for the warmth of a makgeolli bar and some delicious pajeon. With that said, however you choose to see the Cherry Blossoms in spring, whether at the festival or not, be sure to do it in Jinhae. It really does expose these magnificent trees in the most beautiful way.

I can’t quite pin down at what point a visit to Angkor Wat became a life's goal, but it has been a dream in the making for well over 15 years. Before I even arrived in Korea, I knew my first vacation would be to Cambodia. I was excited to finally get my winter vacation dates so I could plan my trip. I decided to travel with a couple friends to the south of Vietnam for a week and then to Cambodia. We chose a private tour (as we had little time or mental capacity to plan the trip at the end of term). Our tour started in HCM, Vietnam and ended in Siem Reap, therefore giving us a few days to see as much of the area as possible.

On our first day, we spent a couple hours at Angkor Wat before heading up to Phnom Bakheng to see the sunset along with a couple hundred other tourists. Though it is certainly not on my must-see list, it was a decent view and a very interesting atmosphere. If you choose to go, make sure you head up early to avoid the lines and to claim your spot!

Our second day there, we spent the morning seeing the highlights of the rest of the complex. I had no idea there was so much to see! We visited: Angkor Thom (ancient capital of the Khmer empire), the South Gate, Bayon Tem-ple, Elephant Terrace, Ta Prohm (made famous by the movie Tomb Raider) and Bantaey Srei.

We barely scratched the surface of all that there is to see in the area and I constantly felt like there wasn’t enough time to truly explore each of the sites. Each place had its own personality, its own history and therefore its own appeal. You could easily spend a couple hours at each one before feeling like you got to really see it.

The three 1/2 days we spent at the complex was abso-lutely not enough time for me and I am already mentally planning a trip to go back during the monsoon season, where the fields will be lush and the temples will have a lovely moss growing on them. I met up with a friend one evening who told me he knew of a photographer who had been to Angkor Wat 28 times and was still finding new areas to explore and photograph. I was not surprised in the least and knew that no matter how many times I made it back to Angkor Wat, it would nev-er quite be enough. During my final few moments at the Angkor Complex, I found myself tearing up again... I know that I can always plan additional visits, but there seems to be something so final about achieving one of your life-long dreams.... Almost like you have to say goodbye to the dream and move on—when you really don't want to. I found this place absolutely magical...

The Daegu Culture and Arts Center will feature the ‘The Pulitzer Prize Photographs - Capture the Moment’ exhibition from Feb. 27th to May 17th. The exhibition previously visited Korea in 1998 and 2010 and broke attendance records each time with its’ impressive pho-tographic history lessons. In 2010, it attracted 220,000 people and had similar numbers of visitors after four years.

Winners of the Pulitzer Prize, known as ‘the Nobel Prize of media’, are important pieces of history. The exhibi-tion shows every winning photo since 1942 when the Pulitzer Prize introduced the ‘Spot News Photography’ category . Each photo is accompanied with an explana-tion based on an interview with the photographer who took it, providing a taste of the atmosphere surrounding the photo. Displayed by year, the photos are an excel-lent opportunity to learn about major world issues and modern history.

This year’s exhibition will be grander in scale than previous visits, with 230 photos compared to 145 in 2010. Additional interviews and documentaries relat-ed to the photos will also contribute to the expanded exhibit.

The Best Honor, the Pulitzer PrizeThe Pulitzer Prize was established in 1917 by pub-lisher Joseph Pulitzer. It is awarded in three sections (media, literature and music) and over the course of its’ 90 year existence has earned a distinguished and authoritative reputation. The Spot News Photography category was introduced in 1942 and separated into two categories in 1968: Breaking News and Feature Photography.

What is special about The Pulitzer Prize Photographs <Capture the Moment>?

1. Added new photosEvery Pulitzer Prize-winning photo will be on display, including 45 that weren’t displayed at the exhibition in 2010 such as the 1951 Korean War, 1969 Summary Trial for Vietcong, 1973 Napalm Bomb and 2001 Attack on the World Trade Center. Visitors will come face to face with major world events and examine the world through photos. Some of the photos haven’t been re-leased for any world tour Pulitzer Prize exhibition for the last 20 years.

3. Three documentaries related to the Pulitzer PrizeThree documentaries reveal behind-the-story looks at some of the photos. ‘Moment of Impact’ is an Emmy Award-winning docu-mentary from 1998. It’s the story of Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Osward and photographer Robert H. Jack-son who with a photo of the moment of the assassina-tion reevaluates the tragic event. Another documentary features interviews with the win-ners including Eddy Adams, the winner for the Vietcong summary trial photo, Carol Guzi, four time Pulitzer Prize winner, and veteran Vietnam War correspondent Horst Faas. Witness their passion, belief, and anguish.

The last documentary is ‘The Death of Kevin Carter’. Kevin Carter received worldwide fame for a photo of a starving Sudanese girl being stalked by a vulture. Criticized for not taking care of the child first, he com-mitted suicide in the same year that he won the prize at age 33. The incident was a glimpse into the fate of journalists and the inner conflict they face after wit-nessing such tragedies. The documentary, chronicling the events from the photo in Sudan to his death, was nominated for Academy Awards and Emmy Awards. 3. Another exhibition, Korean War, The Forgot-ten WarMax Desfor was awarded for his photo of evacuees on a railroad bridge over the Daedong River. At that time, he submitted a series of pictures about the Kore-an War to the Pulitzer organizing committee. 36 pho-tos were chosen and will be featured in the exhibition with the cooperation of AP and North Carolina State University. They show the most pressing four months during the war, from September to December of 1950 and are categorized into four sections: Recapturing Seoul after the Battle of Inchon, Recapturing Pyong-yang, China Intervenes and Heungnam Evacuation. As evident in the titles, the war was a devastating part of the peninsula’s history but is long-gone. Max Desfor, pointing out the lack of historical awareness, says “the war is not over yet.”

38 DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MARCH http://daegucompass.comWhat's Up Seoul - A Pilgrimage to Middle Earth

A Pilgrimage to Middle Earth

Written and photographed by Matthew Caracciolo / Translated by Jihyun LeeA New Zealand Adventure

Back in Chicago, with 5 or 6 jobs between us, my wife and I were mulling our next move. Chicago was too ex-pensive for us. “We could teach in South Korea,” she says. Well, there’s always that I suppose. That’s a little more East than I’m used to. But then it hit me. You know what South Korea is closer to? New Zealand. I’d always wanted to go to New Zealand; a pilgrimage to Middle Earth had always been on the top of my bucket list, and something I thought I wouldn’t cross off for a long, long time. “Ok,” I say. “Let’s go to South Korea!”

Fast-forward two years and we’re flying through Fukuo-ka and Hong Kong to Auckland. The first thing I learn is that South Korea isn’t all that much closer to New Zealand than the Midwestern United States, but it is defi-nitely a cheaper place from which to fly. Our tickets were

Page 39: March 2015 The Daegu Compass

39

about $1,000 cheaper each than the family members that flew from Oklahoma to meet us in Auckland, so we definitely saved money if not time. All you Americans, Canadians, and Europeans listen up: you are closer to Middle Earth now than you will likely ever be. If you have the smallest inkling that you want to go, go now.

Our goal was simple: see as much as possible in about 11 days. 11 days is far too short to spend in such an amazing country, but no matter how long you spend in New Zealand, it’s not long enough. The sooner you

accept that, the better time you will have. Even if you’re not a Lord of the Rings fan, there’s so much to see and do on both islands that you’ll sooner exhaust yourself than experience everything you want to do. A good plan of attack is to allot some relaxing days throughout the itinerary where you have few, if any reservations. Take it easy and enjoy. I especially recommend saving at least one or two of these days until the end, where a slower pace will help you absorb everything you’ve done on the trip. We did this in Queenstown, a mountain resort where you can do as much or as little as you want.

Our trip took us from Auckland on the top of the North Island down to Milford Sound on the southwest coast of the South Island. I recommend renting a car so you can have the flexibility to make your own itineraries. You will see something and you will want to stop and either do it or take a picture of it. We started by visiting some friends in Hamilton. They took us to a beach in Raglan, a hippie town with excellent fish and chips. It was here we were introduced to the ubiquitous L&P, a lemony soda similar to Sprite (but better). From Hamilton we drove to Hobbiton on a warm, summery day, and then had din-ner in Rotorua at a Maori Haka performance. We drove to Tongariro National Park after the dinner and arrived at our accommodation late. It was our original plan to hike the entire Tongariro Alpine Pass that takes you past Mt. Ngauruhoe (Mt. Doom), but for several reasons re-signed to hiking halfway and then coming back. A hike through Mordor is definitely a rite of passage for fans of Frodo and Sam.

After the hike we drove to Wellington to relax for a few days. There are some filming locations within the city limits, such as the ‘get off the road!’ scene. You can buy a Lord of the Rings location guidebook but I must warn you that the old version is very poorly worded and fea-tures mostly random pictures from the movies instead of helpful maps (“Saruman looks over his orc army.”

How insightful, but that doesn’t help me find Isengard). The saving grace is the GPS coordinates that comes included. The free Te Papa museum is worth a look for the giant squid.

To get to the South Island you can fly or take a ferry. Time was limited so we opted to fly to Christchurch, both the fastest and cheapest option. In Christchurch we stayed at the Jailhouse hostel, a former jail con-verted into cheap accommodation. From there we joined a tour to Mt. Sunday, or Edoras in the Lord of the Rings movies. This was the most expensive item on the trip but it’s a beautiful drive, comes with lunch, and the location is breathtaking (literally, the wind might make it hard to breathe). We drove to Milford Sound the next day, a 14 hour drive including several stops such as trying and failing to fly a kite with a Go Pro in strong winds. If you want to sea kayak in Mil-ford Sound, I suggest staying at the sound. These trips start in the morning, so to leave from Te Anau or even Queenstown means waking up at an absurd hour. Oth-erwise, both towns offer day trips and cruises. But you want to sea kayak.

Page 42: March 2015 The Daegu Compass

42 DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MARCH http://daegucompass.comWhat's Up Seoul - A Pilgrimage to Middle Earth

An hour north of Queenstown through some spindly switchbacks is the resort town of Wanaka where Rip-pon Winery offers some free tastings. If you’re a bungee enthusiast, AJ Hackett’s outside Queenstown was the first to offer it back in the 80’s. Coincidentally, you’ll be dunking your head into the Anduin River (for you LOTR nerds like me) and just downstream a few hundred yards is the Argonath filming location.

And that was it. 11 days went by much too quickly. We saw a lot of stuff, ate a lot of food, drank a lot of flat white’s, nerded out on a fair share of nerdy things, and it was a wonderful vacation. What impresses me, after a post-trip viewing of Fellowship of the Ring, is that I don’t feel cheated of movie magic having been to the physi-cal locations. The movie still feels like Middle Earth, not New Zealand, so that’s where it feels like I just spent a week and a half in January. And that, my friends, is a feeling worth having.

The TL: DR version, or my top 5 recommendations in New Zealand

1. Visit Hobbiton. Do it. It’ll put a big smile on your face.

2. Go to a Maori haka show in Rotorua. If you play your cards right, the evening could kill a couple birds with one stone. I really wanted to eat lamb at some point and my wife really wanted to see glow worms. Our Maori evening included both.

3. The Weta Workshop tour in Wellington is worth it for anybody that likes movies, those that take place in Middle Earth and those that don’t.

4. Milford Sound is, in a word, unbelievable. I was there and I don’t believe it exists. Stunning in its scope, its majesty, and its beauty, you MUST go to Milford Sound if you make it all the way to New Zealand.

5. Do a road trip from any point of the country to any other point and you’re going to be looking out the win-dow the entire time. Do yourself a favor and rent a car while you’re there and just drive. Plan a route, stop where it interests you, and experience the vastness of the country.

With each passing year, the city of Daegu is finding more ways to spread its image as a medical tourism destina-tion to a wider audience. With the help of Daegu City, EXCO, Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee and Daegu Compass, local medical institutes were able to present themselves to international students, English teachers, and other foreigners through a series of infor-mal meetings at popular coffee shops. These events, called ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu,’ reached nearly 150 peo-ple over the span of two weekends in January and were a roaring success.

The specific goal of ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ was to point foreigners in the direction of key medical institutes in the area, especially those that seem a little less accessible because of the language barrier. Through the event, participants were able to learn about a wide range of options available in the city . Of course, the hope is that the foreigners in the area will try a medical procedure and spread the word to friends and family back in their home countries.Of particular interest to local institutes are international students, who are relatively large in number and have

parents who may want or need medical treatment. To attract this target audience, the coordinators of ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ chose the approachable, welcoming environment of coffee shops rather than large, sterile auditoriums or classrooms.

Each of the three ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ sessions had 40-55 people in attendance and were strategically locat-ed in coffee shops near Keimyung University, Yeungnam University, and Kyungpook University. Each session be-gan with a brief introduction to Daegu medical tourism, followed by two presentation clinics hosted by medical institutes from around the area. These clinics featured short video clips and slide shows followed by Q&A ses-sions. Companies that participated in the clinics include Hyosung Hospital, BL Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, Taeoreum Medical Clinic, All For Skin, Fatima Hospital, Nune Eye Clinic, and V Plastic Surgery Group. After a short coffee break, the session finished with an addition-al clinic and a fun raffle and survey complete with free giveaways and medical treatments. Eight participants walked away from each ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ session with a prize or a new medical treatment for the taking.

Promoting Medical Tourism To Local Foreigners

The students that came to ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ showed a high level of interest in what Daegu has to offer, particularly in hair transplant surgery, oriental medicine, and the LASIK and LASEK procedures. The most attention, however, was reserved for the ‘Medical Service Coordinator’ internship, in which students can accompany folks from their home countries as trans-lators if they decide to come to Daegu for treatment. A prerequisite for the internship is fluency in Korean, but that didn’t deter a large number of students from inquir-ing about the position. The success of the ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ sessions has organizers already planning for expansion. The goal is to eventually expand the target audience to include American service members and their families. As such, a permanent medical tourism booth is in the works for

Camp Walker where people can inquire about the differ-ent treatments and tours available in a fashion similar to the ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ set up. The Daegu area’s sizable number of American servicemen and their fami-lies are a largely untapped resource for medical tourism, and the new booth could potentially be a game-changer for the local medical tourism industry. With so many affordable treatments available, Daegu is poised to become a leading medical tourism destination in Korea and the ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ meetings are an effective way to capitalize on a major local asset--in-ternational students. Based on the level of interest from the students that attended, the ‘Happy, Healthy Daegu’ sessions were an auspicious start for a year in which Daegu medical tourism seeks to flourish to new heights

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

An easy step-by-step guide on how to get food delivered right to your door. Mastering food delivery by phone in Korea is not difficult. Think of all those dozens of restaurants that are just a stone's throw from your apartment. Get past the nervousness of ordering once or twice and you will see an entirely new world of dining possibilities open up before you.

여보세요(yeobo say yo? / Hello?)

My address is Suseong-gu, Beomeo-dong Compass Villa 202.)

One Jajangmyeon and one fried rice, please)

얼마예요?(ul-ma-ye-yo? / How much is it?)

8,000원입니다.(pal-cheon-won imnida. / It’s 8,000 won.)

네, 고맙습니다.(ne, go-map-sum-ni-da. / Ok, thank you)

This is a sample conversation you might have when you order food. Try it out to get your favorite dish delivered right to your home. How convenient!

Daehan News / Two PpulGrilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided com-pliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls shel-tering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Pic&iqVIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reser-vation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Kim Gwang-suk RoadNot far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

GajokGajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.
