Evesham Township is movingcloser to deciding what part of Willow Bend Road will be includ-ed in the 2015 capital improve-ment program and just how thatinclusion will affect the trees onthe road.

Last month, the township man-ager, engineer and head of the de-partment of public works pre-sented township council with arecommendation for roads to beincluded. In addition to sugges-tions such as Tomlinson MillRoad, North Elmwood Road andparts of Evans Road, the costliestrecommendation was that of Wil-

low Bend Road.The cost, $636,000, stems fromthe road’s 4,775-foot length andlarge number of trees that wouldneed to be removed during work.

Law requires that curbs, guardrails, sidewalks and AmericansWith Disabilities ramps all be in-stalled or repaired and made safewhen doing road improvements,and on Willow Bend Road, thatmeans the potential removal of

trees.Due to the high price, council

asked for more information re-garding the specific trees thatwould be removed as to not un-necessarily destroy the characterof the neighborhoods along theroad and to cut down on the cost.

“We were talking about WillowBend and the need to do some im-provement there, particularly inthe area of the sidewalks, atwhich point council expressedconcern about losing the charac-ter provided along Willow Bendand what sort of options we canlook at,” Township Manager TomCzerniecki said.

Since that time, Township En-gineer Tim Staszewski said an in-

spection performed by a land-scape architect and horticultural-ist has determined that 93 treesalong the road, 33 trees on thenorth side and 60 trees on thesouth side, are at risk.

“Obviously, the areas in whichthese trees are planted are notsufficient for the size of the tree,”Staszewski said.

Kindergarten registration informationavailable at school district website

Kindergarten registration in-formation and registration pack-ets for Evesham Township SchoolDistrict are now available onlineat the district website, www.eve-sham.k12.nj.us. Kindergartenregistrations will take place onone of the days during the weekof March 30. Specific registrationdates and times are designated foreach individual elementaryschool. In addition, there is a dis-trict-wide makeup date that willbe on April 16.

In order for a child to be eligi-ble for kindergarten, he/she mustbe 5 years old on or before Oct. 1of the school year. Each child is

required to have a physical exam-ination before entrance intokindergarten.

The registration packet in-cludes the following items: regis-tration form, information for NJSMART, health history and ques-tionnaire, physical examinationform, dental exam form (recom-mended but not required) andkindergarten parent question-naire.

At the time of registration,parents will need to show four

current proofs of residency, oneof which must be a lease/agree-ment of sale or tax bill. The otherdocuments can include but arenot limited to utility bill, drivers’license, court orders, state agencyagreements or a document withprinted address. Also, an originalbirth certificate with a raised sealmust be shown. Immunizationdates for each child must be veri-fied. An immunization book or

record must show the doctor’s sig-nature or office stamp. A copy of all records will be made and theoriginal returned to you.

Any new student to the Eve-sham Township School Districtmust accompany their parent toregistration for an informalscreening. If any child is current-ly attending the Preschool Inclu-sion Program, they do not need toattend with the parent to registeras the Preschool Inclusionteacher will complete screening

during class time as needed.For any parent/guardian who

does not have access to a comput-er, registration packets can alsobe picked up in the offices of theelementary schools after March 1.Please complete all forms in ad-vance of registration day.

The Evesham Township PoliceDepartment “Officer of theMonth” for February is Patrol-man Joshua Kerr.

Kerr has been a member of theEvesham Police Department forfive months. He is being com-mended for his actions during anextremely dangerous situationand his proactive enforcementand outstanding police work.

On Feb. 7, Kerr was on routinepatrol when he observed an explo-

sion just over the township bor-der with Mt. Laurel. While inves-tigating the cause of the explo-sion, he located a motor vehiclecollision where a vehicle hadstruck a pole causing wires to fallto the roadway. Kerr disregardedhis own safety and helped to ex-tricate the driver from the vehicleas arcing wires started a fire inthe area.

On Feb. 8,Kerr conduct-ed a motor ve-hicle stop andduring thestop he wasable developinformationleading him tobelieve thatthe driver andpassengerwere provid-

ing false names. Kerr identifiedthe subjects and during his stophe observed contraband consis-tent with drug packaging materi-als. During a subsequent searchof the vehicle, he located a loadedhandgun.

Kerr’s motor vehicle stop led tothe arrest of two subjects andmore importantly, a handgun off the street.

in the story of your marriage propos-al. March 20 is National Proposal Day,and we are celebrating the under-the-radar “holiday” by telling the stories

of marriage engagements of the mem-bers of this community.

Why do we do this? As one of our as-sociate editors would say, “we lovelove.”

And so, too, apparently, do plenty of other New Jerseyans. A recently-re-leased Census report shows that NewJersey has the lowest percentage of people who have married two or moretimes. So, when we say “I do,” we tendto mean it. Or, at the very least, we

don’t intend to say it again if things

don’t go right the first time.We’d rather focus on that first point,

though. New Jersey has long held oneof the lowest, if not the lowest, divorcerates in the nation, and experts arenever surprised to read this. Why? Be-cause New Jersey residents typicallyfall into categories that put them at alower likelihood to get a divorce:

We have a high level of education,so we often delay marriage to a laterage, making us more emotionally and

financially stable. Money troubles area leading cause of divorce, and since agood portion of our newlyweds are ina better financial position than theircounterparts in the South and West – where divorce rates are higher – wetend to avoid the D-word.

Which circles us back to what we’rereally talking about here – wonderful,head-over-heels love.

neighboring Voorhees Town-ship’s “Shop Voorhees” program,which also features a special kindof cash card that can be pur-chased and used in businesses inVoorhees in lieu of other forms of currency, with the added benefitthat a portion of the purchasesgoes toward reducing residents’property tax bills.

Evesham Township ManagerTom Czerniecki said Evesham isstill doing research to see if a pro-gram such as Voorhees’ has beensuccessful and could be imple-mented in Evesham.

“A portion of the proceedsfrom the transaction is creditedto their municipal property taxbill,” Czerniecki said. “Whatwe’re trying to determine is howeffective that program has been

for them, what sort of hiddencosts are there to the organiza-tion, and we’re researching thatright now.”

However, Wyche said the prop-erty tax re-education facet of the“Shop Voorhees” program is notpart of Burlington Bucks.

“The decision internally hasbeen that is a direction our elect-ed officials don’t want to go be-cause they don’t feel that businessshould bear the brunt of reducingthe tax burden, and that’s what itamounts to, so we have prettymuch backed off that concept,”Wyche said.

Still, Wyche said the Shop

“It’s free for residents, it’s freefor businesses, and it supports thelocal business association,” hesaid.

Staszewski also knocked downthe possibility of doing the neces-sary sidewalk work, removingroots, but keeping trees them-selves in place.

“If we keep trees and we main-tain these standards, we’re essen-tially cutting roots of these treesand essentially impacting up theside of the tree, and of course Idon’t think any tree would essen-tially remain in good standingafter that work is done,”

Staszewski said.Another factor is a $200,000“Safe Routes to Schools” grantthat Director of Community De-velopment Nancy Jamanow be-lieves the township could acquirebecause of the road’s connectionto St. Joan of Arc School and Jag-gard Elementary.

As such, it was her suggestionthat for now, the work to be doneon Willow Bend should extendfrom Wescott down toward Chero-kee High School and TomlinsonMill Road, and not from Wescotttoward St Joan of Arc, which iswhere the trees are the worst.

“The worst area in which thetrees are impacted is actuallyfrom Westcott Road toward St.Joans, and I did go out there andlook at that before I said that, andit’s true, the bulk of the trees arein that area, and part of that is be-cause of the work that was donebecause of Hurricane Sandy,” she

said.That was an idea Mayor Randy

Brown is receptive to, and he saidit would give everyone more timeto decide what to do with the ma-

jority of the trees as well get inputfrom those who live in the area.
