El Adviento es el comienzo del Año Litúrgico, empieza el domingo más próximo al 30 de noviembre y termina el 24 de diciembre. Son los cuatro domingos anteriores a la Navidad y forma una unidad con la Navidad y la Epifanía. El término "Adviento" viene del latín adventus, que significa venida, llegada. El color usado en la liturgia de la Iglesia durante este tiempo es el morado. Con el Adviento comienza un nuevo año litúrgico en la Iglesia.

Advent, which comes from the Latin word for "arrival" or "coming," is a period of preparation for the birth of our Lord. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and is the start of the Christmas season, which lasts through the Baptism of Our Lord. The first Sunday of Advent also marks the beginning of the liturgical year, the Church's "New Year's Day," at which time we change the cycle of readings we are using at Mass.Advent is a time of joyous anticipation, but also of penance and preparation for the great Christmas feast. The liturgical color of the season is purple, a sign of penance, which is also used during Lent. The Church discourages excessive ornamentation, boisterous music and even weddings during Advent, in order to foster a sense of quiet hope.

When one of these persons receives information leading to a “reasonable suspicion” that a child is being abused or neglected, he or she must make a report to the appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency. However, every adult has a moral responsibility to report suspected child abuse. Gospel LK 21:25-28, 34-36 Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.

“Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Reflexion

The Advent liturgy is shot through with a great longing for Christ.   But John the Baptist is constantly putting in an appearance – almost to the point of irritation.   What is the meaning of this? We have to experience the absence of Christ in order later to experience his presence.  We need to learn how to wait.   Waiting is one of the hardest things for us nowadays.   There is such urgency about even the smallest things in our modern world, and this of course is greatly aggravated by commercial advertising.   But Advent is a four-week course on waiting.“Zero wait state,” the computer manual said the goal was.  It means no waiting at all: you press the key, and the programme (or whatever) is instantly on the screen.  Computers are the great accelerators of all sorts of processes (banking, accounting, shopping, etc.) and they themselves are becoming faster and faster.   But for the ordinary user, such high speed is required only to run games – which are themselves the greatest time-wasters.   The speed of our world today is full of contradictions.   We rush to save time in order to be able to waste it. Time is money, we say.  And sure enough, we do with money what we do with time: many rush to save more and more of it in order to waste it on things they don't need or even want. Can the equation be carried even farther?  Time is money; but what is time?  What is your time?  It is you, it is yourself, your life. Time is life.  Do we save our life in order to waste it?  It seems we do.  “Whoever tries to save his life will lose it,” said Jesus (Luke 17:37). We rush headlong into the future: it is a kind of greed for more and more life, or at least for more and more experience.   The future, we feel, will fulfil us, where the past and present have failed.  But we rush at it so fast that it gets no chance to fulfil us.  We rush past it in the same instant that it becomes the present: because we are forever hurtling ourselves into the future.  We badly need to study waiting.

RIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO

Jeremías: 33, 14-16 Yo haré nacer del tronco de David un vástago santo. "Se acercan los días, dice el Señor, en que cumpliré la promesa que hice a la casa de Israel y a la casa de Judá. En aquellos días y en aquella hora, yo haré nacer del tronco de David un vástago santo, que ejercerá la justicia y el derecho en la tierra. Entonces Judá estará a salvo, Jerusalén estará segura y la llamarán 'el Señor es nuestra justicia' ".

Del salmo 25 (24) Descúbrenos, Señor, tus caminos. Descúbrenos, Señor, tus caminos, guíanos con la verdad de tu doctrina. Tú eres nuestro Dios y salvador y tenemos en ti nuestra esperanza. R/. Porque el Señor es recto y bondadoso, indica a los pecadores el sendero, guía por la senda recta a los humildes y descubre a los pobres sus caminos. R/. Con quien guarda su alianza y sus mandatos, el Señor es leal y bondadoso. El Señor se descubre a quien lo teme y le enseña el sentido de su alianza. R/.

1 Tesalonicenses: 3, 12-4, 2 Que el Señor los fortalezca hasta que Jesús vuelva. Hermanos: Que el Señor los llene y los haga rebosar de un amor mutuo y hacia todos los demás, como el que yo les tengo a ustedes, para que Él conserve sus corazones irreprochables en la santidad ante Dios, nuestro Padre, hasta el día en que venga nuestro Señor Jesús, en compañía de todos sus santos. Por lo demás, hermanos, les rogamos y los exhortamos en el nombre del Señor Jesús a que vivan como conviene, para agradar a Dios, según aprendieron de nosotros, a fin de que sigan ustedes progresando. Ya conocen, en e fecto, las instrucciones que les hemos dado de parte del Señor Jesús.

San Lucas: 21, 25-28. 34-36 Se acerca su liberación. En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Habrá señales prodigiosas en el sol, en la luna y en las estrellas. En la tierra, las naciones se llenarán de angustia y de miedo por el estruendo de las olas del mar; la gente se morirá de terror y de angustiosa espera por las cosas que vendrán sobre el mundo, pues hasta las estrellas se bambolearán. Entonces verán venir al Hijo del hombre en una nube, con gran poder y majestad. Cuando estas cosas comiencen a suceder, pongan atención y levanten la cabeza, porque se acerca la hora de su liberación. Estén alerta, para que los vicios, la embriaguez y las preocupaciones de esta vida no entorpezcan su mente y aquel día los sorprenda desprevenidos; porque caerá de repente como una trampa sobre todos los habitantes de la tierra. Velen, pues, y hagan oración continuamente, para que puedan escapar de todo lo que ha de suceder y comparecer seguros ante el Hijo del hombre".

Relexión

Empezamos el tiempo llamado de “Adviento”. Le seguirán otros: Navidad, Cuaresma y Pascua. Todos ellos significan ciclos espirituales por los que pasamos las personas y las comunidades. Nos configuran distintos periodos de tiempo que nos hacen madurar espiritualmente y que nos ayudan cada año a profundizar en el propósito de nuestra vida. ¿Cuál será la esencia del ciclo espiritual del Adviento? Podemos apuntar una palabra: llegada. El Adviento es un tiempo de llegada de las cosas de Dios envueltas en circunstancias personales, comunitarias, sociales que irán variando según los lugares en donde nos encontremos. No es tanto un tiempo de clamar: ¡Ven Señor Jesús! Jesús ya vino hace 2015 años. Es un tiempo de levantar la cabeza, los ojos, el corazón, la vida, la comunidad al Reino de Dios, a un mundo nuevo que está llegando cada día más y que un día llegará plenamente. El Evangelio de San Lucas y su anexo (los “Hechos de los apóstoles”), la carta de San Pablo a los Tesalonicenses (2ª lectura) nos ayudarán a ahondar en esa presencia del “retoño legítimo de David que hará justicia y derecho en la tierra” que anunciaba Jeremías (1ª Lectura) y nos darán fuerzas para lograr su plenitud. Adviento es un tiempo de pararnos y ver las señales (evangelio) del Reino que llega a nivel del planeta tierra, a nivel de las relaciones sociales y también a nivel personal. Es verdad que también se tambalearán las fuerzas del universo; es decir algunas realidades que parecían tener consistencia hasta ahora (la paz, la honradez, la esperanza, la convivencia, la solidaridad, el amor). Pero el Adviento nos invita a ver en todo ello –señales y fracasos- motivos de camino, de lucha, de indignación y de conf ianza porque hay sa l ida . “Un ta l Jesús” (título del libro de los hermanos Vigil) vino un día no muy lejano a mostrarnos el camino de la creación de un mundo nuevo y s igue ah í caminando a nues t ro l ado alentándonos con su Espíritu.
