Industry DriversCost Pressures from Broadband Mobile Traffic Mandate Evolution to All-IP
Increase in consumer demand for services—voice, data, video—on the go
New broadband mobile services require increased capacity, robust quality, with optimal consumer experience
ARPU decreasing for voice, increasing with data--trending in some countries flat to negative as bandwidth demands increase
Mobile Service providers must evolve to realize the reduced costs, efficiencies and quality of an all-IP network

Overlay Networks for 2G/3G are too Costly, Complex and Don’t Scale
Does not scale: Overlay TDM, ATM and DSL networks don’t cost effectively scale to meet capacity requirements
Not efficient: Under utilization of costly TDM access links, increasing operating expenses--ATM aggregation is efficient but costly
Costly and complex: Complex operator integration of varied backhaul technologies for End-to-end provisioning, OAM and QoS

“Given the limitations of Spanning Tree implementations, various MPLS techniques currently in draft within the IETF hold promise as long-term scalable solutions that maximize network resource utilization” Metro Ethernet Forum(Agosto 2003).

Impredecible

Synchronization Distribution Solutions in UTRAN
GPS-based Solution
Easy to deploy
Could be costly if deployed over large no. of cell sites
Might have some political constraints
L1 SolutionSONET/SDH/PDH-based
Use derived in-band timing from synchronous NE
Most TDM transport NE have output timing for intra CO distribution
Only for site with co-located SONET/SDHPDH equipment (or other type of sync NE with traceable source)
Low cost solution
Synchronous Ethernet

Other proprietary mechanism
NTP could work with coarse grain adjustment interval (assuming Node B has accurate timing src)

LTE architecture components Optional IPSec encryption
From eNB to S-GW or separate Security GW
Payload encryption in last mile
Previously this was achieved as a by-product of RNC encrypting payload for air interface. In LTE, encryption for air interface has moved to eNB.
Protect eNB addresses in cases of backhaul through public IP domain (e.g., untrusted DSL provider)
Consequence is sub-optimal routing of X2 traffic, which can be improved by moving DSL handoff out into aggregation network
Distributed Security GW (at Hub 1 level) seems optimal
Scales IPSec
Optimized routing in RAN (X2 interface)
Provides flexible load-sharing connectivity
Running IPSec from the eNB to a trusted site in aggregation network provides required security

For base stations using Carrier Ethernet transport, there are several approaches for timing and time synchronization:
Packet-based timing protocols decouple the mobile operator’s network synchronization from the backhaul network (e.g. leased Ethernet service) but places stringent QoS and resilience requirements on that backhaul network
