    ulfurS+opperC:idesulf Copper-1

    xygenO+ulfurS+agnesiumM:atesulf Magnesium-2

     …..xygenO+arbonC…:idedioxCarbon-3…………..xygenO+ronI…………:ideoxIron-4

    xygenO+arbonC+alciumC……:atecarbonCalcium-5

    Oxygen+ydrogenH+odiumS…:idehydroxSodium-6

    water :

    1- Sodium [×]

    2- Magnesium [×]

    3- Potassium [ √]

    4- Copper [×]

    Experiment:*

1- Put 2 cm depth of copper sulfate solution into a

    test tube

2- Add a small piece of magnesium ribbon

3- leave the test tube, what do you observe ?(1) We will observe a reaction right away(2) The solution Changes colour as we provide more

    magnesium

    * What is in your test tube at the end of the

experiment ?(1) Magnesium sulfate (colourless) and..(2) Copper (red-brown specks)

    * Look at the equation

    Worksheet (2)Displacement Reactions

    Key words :

Reactivity series : A list of the metal elements in

    order of reactivity

We can predict whether a metal and a metal

Compound will react by comparing the

Reactivity of the metal and the metal in theMetal compound

    * For each equation below, decide whether

there will be a reaction . If there is,

    complete the equation :

    * Explain the following :

1- We can’t keep cooper sulfate in iron vessels(1) The vessel wall will corrode because (2) “Iron” atoms will

react with “Copper sulfate”, (3) displaces “copper” to form

“Iron sulfate” and (4) “Copper” precipitates

2- We use gold and silver in making jewelry(1) They are of 5 least reactive elements, so, (2) they don’t reactor displace other elements, so they don’t change by time

3- The color of copper sulfate change into brown

by adding iron nail to solutionBecause (1) “Iron” atoms will react with “Copper sulfate”, (2)

displaces “copper” to form “Iron sulfate” and (3) “Copper”

precipitates giving the solution a brown colour

    Worksheet (3) Displacement Reactions

Key words :Ore : A rock that contains a metal oxide we can

    extract the metal from it

Charcoal : Blackened wood that has been burned in

    a fire

    * How can we get copper ?

We can get copper metal from the copper ore

( Cuprite ) present in the crust rocks by heating

cuprite with charcoal as the equation

    * What are the uses of copper ?

1 Simple tools used 1000s of years ago Pots and pans2 Modern electronic circuitry Copper wires

    3 High resistance to corrosion

“due to its relative low reactivity”

    Water supply

    networks

4 Ease of extraction from its ores: so it is

    inexpensive

    Money coins

    * Explain the following :

1- we use copper in electric wires(1) “Copper” is one of the very conductive elements and… (2) It is a cheap metal found in abundance in earth crust

2- extraction of copper by reacting cuprite with

charcoal(1) Carbon “charcoal” will displace copper in cuprite which…. (2) produces carbon monoxide gas and leaves copper as a pure

    element

    The thermite reaction

    Key words :

Exothermic reaction : A reaction which produces

    heat

    The thermite reaction:

When we add aluminum to powdered iron oxide

and provide the mixture with a little heat, they

react and produce high temperature and can beexplosive and the mixture becomes a solid lump of

    metallic iron

1- What type of reaction is the thermite?

    ……… Exothermic Displacement reaction…………………………

2- Which metal is more reactive aluminum or iron?

    ……Aluminum………………………………………………………

3- How can this reaction be useful for iron

structures repairing?Due to the high temperature produced by the reaction,

the volume of molten iron metal takes the place of

broken metal and weld the pieces together/ fills the

    gaps

4- Write down the reaction word equation
