Who is Maurane Corbin?A soccer player since the age of 3. I began to play basketball in secondary 3. After

simultaneously practicing both sports for one year, I decided that I would only invest my

time in the game of basketball. The gap between each practices and trainings are reserved

for studying because education is something that I value very much. Personality wise, I am

very social and I love to spend time with family and friends.

Describe your role on the team this year (your position, your role during games/practices, off the court).

My defensive presence has a huge impact on the

court. Protecting the rim is my main task on defense

because of my size. Rebounding is also one of my

strengths on both offense and defense. Also, my

conditioning helps me run up and down the court

with ease, which helps me and my team to run in

transition. . I play the 5 spot on the team, meaning

that I’m mostly inside the key. I’m also a positive

person that is always looking to encourage and

to push my teammates to give everything they

got. Because I’m one of the team captains, I have

a role outside the court: I have to ensure good

communication, organization and team cohesion.

What did you have to sacrif ice during the year?

It is very important to do certain sacrifices when you’re

playing in a sport at a high level. There are days where

fatigue kicks in and it affects your motivation to workout.

Moments like that remind me of my objectives and it gives

me the extra energy needed to motivate myself and get

inside the gym. One of the biggest challenges is having a

busy school schedule. Lots of exams and projects come at

the same time and it removes the personal time I have for

myself. Although it can be stressful at times, the key in all of

this is to be passionate. I am so passionate about this sport

that I am willing to make the sacrifices to be the best I can

be and excel.

I wasn’t satisfied with the way I was performing

at the beginning of the season. I was just

coming out of a five-week break because

of a tendinitis in my knee, which made me

lose some physical abilities. I was also out

of my comfort zone because I had to play

in a new position: around the perimeter. My

offensive efficiency was affected and I was

much less effective. However, this made me

realize that I had to work on my dribbling

skills and improve my shooting in order to

become a more versatile player. After the

holidays, I started to play back inside the

paint again and my confidence was back,

making me contribute a lot more on offense.

But, I still have to work on my free-throw

shooting and on my physique to be more of

an offensive threat. Playing inside demands

lots of physical effort, and at the university

level, the position becomes harder to play.

I have to learn how to box-out even better

because I know that my height won’t be

enough for me to effectively grab rebounds

at the higher level. Thus, I decided to follow

a program that our physical trainer has

assigned to me, which involves me being in

the weight room four times a week, which

will guarantee improvement.

How did you progress this year? What do you think you have to improve?

Page 10: Maurane corbin portfolio

10

My goals collectively haven’t been reached

this year because we aimed to win the

provincial and national title. We lost in the

provincial finals and finished in 5th at the

national level. On the other hand, individually,

I began to play more outside the 3-point line at

the beginning of the year, which was a major

challenge for me. However, I embraced the

challenge because it allowed me to improve

my other skills such as my dribbling and my

shooting. At the second half of the season,

I went back to playing inside and it made me

get in my comfort zone. During the same time

period, I tried to give myself some personal

challenges like finishing games with double-

doubles. Completing a challenge like this

depends of each game, but I’m proud to

say that I have completed it for at least half

of those games. So, I finished the end of the

season on a positive note.

Have you achieved your goals on the court this year?

Page 11: Maurane corbin portfolio

11

What are your academic achievements?

The fact I have excellent marks (a 94%

average in my last semester) is a great

achievement for me. My busy schedule

requires me to be organized and disciplined.

My academic achievements demonstrate

how well I can overcome challenges, without

forgetting that I am involved in other activities

such as being a member of the student-

athlete tutoring committee. Furthermore, my

high marks allowed me to obtain certain

scholarships.

I think that my biggest qualities as a player

are my work ethic and my desire to learn.

I am a player always ready to give the best

I have, and to push myself for my team.

Also, I am a person that brings positive

energy in a team and I am always there to

encourage my teammates.

Why should a coach at the university level choose Maurane Corbin?

Maurane’s height is an important asset

for the team. How do you take advantage of her

height and her physique against other teams?

Ever since her first year, Maurane was

important to us. She quickly became

a defensive game changer.

“hard work beats talent

Maurane is a player

Page 15: Maurane corbin portfolio

15

Does she have what it takes to excel at the university level is she perseverant? Why?

Maurane is an example to follow because

of the enormous amount of effort she puts

on and off the court. Her week is separated

in 50 hours: 25 hours concentrated in

academics and the other 25 to basketball.

Her work ethic will set the tone on her great

university career.

with incredible talent.
